Homesteading in North Florida
United States

***Tour of our edible permaculture yarden. Food & pollinator plants.*** April 2024 in N. Florida.
April is my favorite month here in North Florida. Everything is alive, bright green and blooming. Fantastic time to eat fresh from the yarden.
It's also the busiest month, where projects are pushed through before teh summer heat and humidity sets in.

The day after Hurricane Idalia :(
Переглядів 484Рік тому
Idalia hit early morning on August 30th, 2023. All things considered, we got away with a black eye. So much work though, SO much work ahead. The entire county was out of power. Today, 4 days later, 18,000 of 28,000 connections are still not restore. We are amongst them. Tanksful for a pool that hasn't turned green yet. :)

Building a 3 bin COMPOST system ~ COUNTERWEIGHT lid ~ 3 REMOVABLE fronts!
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 роки тому
We finally took the time to build a decent compost system! The counterweight lid is my favorite feature. It makes things so easy and hassle free. Big lid - one hand operation. The 3 bins will allow us to rotate the compost much easier than our old system ever allowed. It's easy now. Take the fronts off, move compost pile from one bin to the next. This automatically upside-downs the contents and...
FERMENTED (brined) PICKLES ~ crunchy & healthy!

Ferments are tasty and so amazing for gut health. Not enough cucumbers to can them up? Brine ferment to the rescue. They'll last for months in the fridge. The process is super simple and it takes nothing but salt and water. Try them. Your gut microbiome and your taste buds will thank you. Blasted STINK BUGS ~ don't make MY MISTAKES!
Переглядів 10 тис.2 роки тому
We created the perfect conditions for stink bugs! They found their save haven with plenty of food and shelter, even through cold winters. They were jolly happy and procreated exponentially. Nothing ever disturbed their world. Permaculture techniques such as heavy mulching, chop & drop, cover crops, no mow, etc, improved the soil and the presence of pollinators, and at the same time created an o...
Raised bed BATHTUB gardening!!! Indestructible - inexpensive - convenient!
Переглядів 10 тис.2 роки тому
Raised beds rotting? Fire ants? Flooding? Voles, moles and pocket gophers? Drought? Planters too small? Tired of gardening at ground level? Here's the solution - BATHTUB GARDENING! :) We use enameled steel tubs. Indestructible! Cast iron tubs are too cumbersome to move around. Vinyl may work, but also deteriorate in the elements, and perhaps crack from the weight. Reuse - reduce- recycle! :)
CANNING ground VENISON ~~~ using Tattler lids
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 роки тому
Shelf stable ground venison - no freezer required. Of course this works with ground beef, ground chicken or turkey and ground pork, etc as well. I do all my canning with reusable lids. My brand is Tattler. Harvest Guard is another brand that is basically identical. I believe both are manufactured in the US. MUSHROOM BUTTER - I used mostly chanterelles
Переглядів 6683 роки тому
Garlic butter is good. MUSHROOM BUTTER is BETTER! Enjoy this treat on meat, baked potatoes, on pasta ...... or butter your toast with it. It's delicious and very easy to make. Recipe: 1 - 1.5 lbs mushrooms of choice. 1/2 pound butter (splurge and get quality butter, it's worth it) at least 3 cloves garlic - finely minced Herbs are to taste, I use: 1 tablespoon dried parsley 1 tablespoon dried b...
CANNING marinated MUSHROOMS (I chose chanterelles) ~USDA approved recipe! ~Waterbath canning.
Переглядів 9 тис.3 роки тому
Whether you forage or buy quantities of mushrooms, being able to preserve them is a big plus. This recipe is USDA approved and requires only waterbath canning. The mushrooms turn out great and go so well with anything grilled, on a charcuterie board, with cheese, etc. Personally, I snack them straight out of the jar. I used chanterelles for this recipe, but any small whole firm mushroom will wo...
PUMPKIN POWDER (flour) ~ how to MAKE and what to DO with it.
Переглядів 36 тис.3 роки тому
This works with any pumpkin or winter squash. Once you have pumpkin powder handy, it's hard to imagine a culinary life without it. The possibilities are endless. Despite Seminole pumpkins storing without refrigeration for up to a year or more, the powder has the huge advantage of being already cooked and available in any desired amount, much like a spice. It also takes up lot less pantry space ...

Where do you buy your seeds? I want to find the cress radish.
Watching this in almost 2025…Oh how things have changed 😉😊
One question 🙋🏾♂️ are you married
They are actually quite tasty, I like it! 😋🦃
I have a presto canner w/ out the dial. I could never get the jiggler to jiggle. So, I got the nesco, & I love it! The size was right & the price was right. I do measure my 8 cups of water 💦 before I add it. I wish it had the stainless steel liner too. The cord is short, but I manage it. All in all, it’s a game changer for me. 🫙
Boiled them yesterday thinking they were the once for oil, ohh gosh the smell was soo awkward for me I threw them away and did more research on types of palm trees and guess what I slowly went to pick them up again and ate them😂
Have u ever grown sugar cane
What city are u growing
With so many issues would a green house be a answer
What do you do with the moringas
Whats a good plum tomato to grow
If you get mold despite using weights and covering with the brine and using the silicone gaskets with bands, what might have gone wrong?
Oh dear, I just rewatched and for some reason I though you waited 2-3 weeks, not 2-3 days. 😢 It smelled so good too. At least I have just a few more green tomatoes to try again.
They had been bubbling so beautifully too. I'll let you know how my next batch turn out. I'm determined to make this lol.
Will the sauerkraut be tasty without the sausage cooked in it?
You can use regular. I called the company one just has to arrange the jars so a jar isn,t under the valve. I have 2 and I LOVE mine.
I have hundreds of lbs of these every year in my forest and I never know what to do with them. Now I'm making christmas presents with this recipe
Im about to ask so many questions lol. Love what you're doing here! 1st question, how did you keep your Moringa from dying during freezes? You wrap it up? Where abouts in the Pan Handle are you? We're in Milton by Prnsacola and just now getting into all things gardening.
Hi@ can you start from canned corn? or from corn on the cob? thanks!
Try the mesh bags for your fruit trees, I hear they prevent worms.
Where are you located in North Florida?
I have been sprouting Mung beans for several days in a 1/2 gallon glass Mason jar and after two days I moved them to a window where they got sun for 4+ hours each day. Their size almost doubled each day. After the first 4-5 days I began "harvesting" about half the jar because it was so full and I couldn't use the other half. I used what I harvested in a Thai soup I made. The next few days I did the same with the remainder which had quickly grown to fill the entire jar again. This time I used half in the soup and just decided to eat the other half raw. the way the eternally young looking Anita Larkins would do (who eats a HUGE amount of raw sprouts daily as a raw vegan) and looks half her age.
Hi It’s worth mentioning why you have to be so careful with canning with oil included and why the rules are so strict. Too much oil v salt/vinegar or any xontamination can cause a fatal level of botulism botulinum. (Botulism) Personally I wouldn’t preserve moist veg of any sort with oil due to the risk but I love your video 👍
I just purchased one of these and the lid gasket insertion was extremely frustrating for me. I ended up having to use a blunt instrument to finally get it in place? Any tips would be appreciated!
I think the low and high setting is for slow cooker because all slow cooker has low and high setting.
Do you need to sieve this ?
The seed of that fruit is basically a minature Coconut. Crack one open and look, then taste the white part. No Joke, try one.
Great video! Thank you for sharing! I'm trying this with some chanterelles I foraged.
If you have enough for 2 quarts, you have enough for a half gallon… 2 quarts= half gallon… Just saying…
Where do you find the weights
Amazon
Thanks for an extremely good display. Excellent work.
That looks delicious😋 I'm going to have to try this with me next batch of chanterelles that I get while out foraging this Fall. Thank you😁
Just started fermenting things. I’m 55!!! Where have I been?!? 🤣😝 My first cucumbers (with red onion, jalapeño and garlic) is SOOOOOO GOOOOD!!! And it has helped this erosion (near damn ulcer) on my Vegas nerve. Good stuff!!! 💪🔥❤️🫡
Looove your accent where are you from?
I love my Nesco! 1st time at pressure canning. Have completed 4 rounds of pints and all popped. Could not be any happier. Best choice for me!
Is that a North Florida accent? So it's late September here (southern Illinois) and I have several green tomatoes left on the vine. Won't be long until it frosts. Should do something with some of them before then, this looks interesting. So...a Tbsp. salt per quart jar. Sounds way salty. A couple of hot peppers, garlic, peppercorns, celery seed, And you promise that if I fill my jars with that much water, they won't expand and overflow. They always do. I have the jars, weights, every kind of airlock they make, and some they don't. Oh, and the gloves too. I might try this tomorrow. I ate a half a jar of (vinegar) picked green tomatoes this morning. And my half gallon pickling crock is full of hot banana peppers, garlic, and dill. Just experimenting. The other comment about adding horseradish sounds fantastic.
God bless, Christ is God in the flesh - He is the only way into Heaven. Christ said two would be grinding grain at the mill, one would be taken the other left behind. Accept Christ so you won’t be left behind!
Just followed the recipe with my chanterelles 😁 cant wait to try them! Thanks for doing this video, I was doubting myself a bit but this made me feel more confident. ❤️
It’s that time of the year again. I miss summer already
Why would you not use a juicer?
The recipes are great. Ty.
Good idea about using the little grills for liquid
I looove turkey tail. People are a little scared, but their flavor really is more pork than turkey. I buy them fried at a Mexican bakery. Chopped meat with eggs, in stir fry w/ rice or noodles, with bbq sauce like pulled pork sandwiches… it’s very versatile
Thank you! This is the way I wanted to do it. No sugar, and natural citric acid (don't use the powder!)
I did a fresh ivy leaves wash with washing soda yesterdsy and attest that it works. However, it doesn't provide the fresh smell the washing liquid gives and thats whst i miss.
Going to do this with my tomatoes today
I use a hand vacuum to suck up stink bugs .
Chopping back mulberry tree is a great idea. Mine is now gigantic and hard to pick.
The venting is a safety feature to guarantee pressure maintenance internally. A metal canner vents too so it's the exact same in both canners. Mine has been great and is the only one I trust to pressure can in. My IPMAX gave up on me after a year and cost double what I paid for the NESCO.
Great video! I've really wanted to try this for upcoming deer season in TN.
