      Hi, there is a book by Helmut Heusler that will answer your question 1000-times better than I ever could. Plus, it describes a lot of the maintenance and repair tasks very thoroughly. Best book, if you’re thinking about getting an airhead. And when it comes to customizing it helps to check in with a TÜV guy because of changes in regulations over the years. Always the rules of the year the bike was built apply, so as a rule of thumb…the older the better = more liberty when customizing. What is your plan?

    • @pappenheimer8154

      Hey Joshua, thanks for you information, I try to get this book. I am thinking about a project like yours but at this time I think I want to start with a R100R from the 90th but it has to be get a legal German license

    • @MotoWrenchers
      @MotoWrenchers День тому

      Sounds great. What is it about the R100R that you like? Not many of the modifications I made are actually relevant for the TÜV…fortunately. As long as you keep within the normal regulations obviously. But it’s okay to build your own fenders, seat, etc.

    I could have done with this video about 15 years ago.! I've almost got PTSD thinking back to my old R80 café racer project. In the end, I put the bike back together and flogged it as I wasn't happy with the finish. I had the white powder come up afterwards. Its aluminium oxide( essentially aluminum rust) the raw Ali needs a barrier over it otherwise it reacts with the air very quickly. I guess the break cleaner is giving you that somehow.

    • @MotoWrenchers
      @MotoWrenchers 6 днів тому

      Oh man...hope this engine doesn't get it. A friend of mine told me that there is something that's used in aviation to prevent it. I'll definitely do some research now. If I had to do it again, I'd definitely risk PTSD as well :D

  • @scottthornton9237
    @scottthornton9237 9 днів тому

    First off, This was a well made video! Got right to the point and great detail. However, I have to tell you: Those metal brushes are killing your project! @7:21 You zoom in to show the crystalyn / powdery deposits that formed after the prior cleaning. I seriously doubt that was residue from the aluminum cleaning solution. Much more likely it is evidence of dissimilar metal corrosion caused by the brass and stainless steel brushes attacking the softer cast aluminum. Aluminum is easily attacked by microscopic particles of harder metal brushes left behind in the pores of the cast aluminum. This is why it showed up after you returned from your honeymoon! In a word, TIME. In the aviation world, (45 years as a Aircraft mechanic here.) it is forbidden to use metallic brushes to clean aluminum for this very reason. The use of the scotchbrite, nonmetallic scrapers and nonmetallic brushes, is in all honesty the way to clean aluminum by abrasion. Loose the metal brushes and switch to plastic, nylon or even bristle! I would like to see how this engine looks a month or two from now. If you notice the aluminum "turning" in the near future; attack it with scotchbrite to dislodge the other metals that are attacking the aluminum. Wishing you the best luck! Subscription EARNED!

      @MotoWrenchers 6 днів тому

      Hi Scott, thanks for your insight. I'll definitely keep that in mind. So much still to learn. I'm happy I didn't use them on the whole engine. A friend told me about a solution that is used in aviation to protect the aluminum after cleaning. Do you know anything about something like that?

      @kihestad 5 днів тому

      @@MotoWrenchers I have not tried comparing them either to see what is best. I think brake cleaner is mostly acetone, but with some extra stuff in it. When cleaning metal before welding acetone is best, brake cleaner might leave residue from "the other stuff" on the metal after it has evaporated, and creates a dangerous gas when welding + can introduce impurities to the weld. I often use something oil based first, diesel is great but smells terrible, white spirit/terpentinen works ok as well. These last longer since they do not evaporate as fast as acetone/brake cleaner.

      Ich habe die beiden Vergaser bei Vaporblast24 Nassstrahlen lassen. Damit war ich sehr zufrieden. Die haben 35€ für beide Vergaser genommen. Baust du deine SR500 um oder restaurierst du die? SR500s liegen mir sehr am Herzen. Hab mit 13 auf der SR von meinem Vater fahren gelernt. Er hat immer gesagt: "wenn du sie anbekommst, darfst du sie fahren"

    It’s a real labour of love cleaning an engine as tricky as the bmw boxer! The before and after is incredible! Now, I haven’t used it myself but check out ACF-50 spray. It’s a anti corrosion spray for the aerospace industry but everyone uses it on bare metal parts of their bikes! It should make sure all your effort isn’t wasted after the first ride of the bike! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

    Hey coole Videoserie - gestern direkt fast alle durch gebinged :D Kurze Rückfrage... Die JRready für den Hobbybereich? Alie.... hat hier ebenfalls Sets zu bieten, wäre die Qualität eine Alternative da 300€ doch eine ganze Stange sind... LG aus dem Süden :)

      Moin! Danke dir. Ich wollte unbedingt einen hochwertigen Kabelbaum haben. Jetzt wo die Qualität kenne würde ich mir die Sets auch selbst kaufen aber du hast auf jeden Fall recht...ist ne ganze Stange Geld. Zu Aliexp... kann ich nicht wirklich was sagen. Kann natürlich sein, dass die ne sehr gute Kopie haben und die auch vernünftig funktionieren aber kann auch sein, dass das totaler Schrott ist und man sich damit nachher mehr Probleme einhandelt als einem lieb ist. Für mich war es wichtig, dass ich mich auf am Ende auf die Elektrik verlassen kann. Wie viel sollen die von Alie kosten? An welchem Bike schraubst du gerade? LG aus dem Norden :)

    Bin auch gerade dabei eine R80R in einen Cafe Racer umzubauen. Fasst man ein Teil an, kann man gefühlt daran alles neu machen. Getriebeschaden kam dazu. Eigentlich sollten die Schwingarmlager ersetzt werden... Aktuell lackiere ich den Rahmen, Getriebe, Schwinge und HAG in Schwarz. Zum Schluss kommt jetzt dann der Motor dran. Aber irgendwann ist es dann einfach "to much" :D, wenn man alles immer "neu" macht. Und Gratulation!

    Just a quick comment, the connectors are designed to be used with stranded wires, not pins. If you use round pins the contact area is reduced and if a high current load is being supplied the contact might over heat.

    • @MotoWrenchers
      @MotoWrenchers 23 дні тому

      Hi Richard, if I remember correctly the munit blue came with a bunch of ferrules in different sizes (all relatively small though). I thought those were supposed to go on to the wire ends. Would you recommend to take the pins off of the output side?

    • @richardprowse1088
      @richardprowse1088 23 дні тому

      @@MotoWrenchers The breakout box that comes with the Motoscope pro has ferrules for the wires as it uses screw terminals. I have fitted 2 MoUnits recently and they didn't come with ferrules. The MoUnit uses wago style connectors which are designed for stripped wire. I have only used ferrules on the older M-unit 2. One other tip is to check the rating on each pin of the Deutsch connectors. DTP 7.5A DT13A and DTP 25A.
