Getting an album pressed on vinyl... or not

No Country (Explicit) - Official Lyric Video
Переглядів 525Рік тому
Purchase the single here: landonbalk.bandcamp.com/track/no-country No Country began life as a mouth harp sample created with the S5000. The inspired sequence was captured using a Tascam 238. A stereo mix of all the tracks from the 238 were bounced to the Fostex M80 in an attempt to sync the audio from both machines using computer software. It was a failed experiment that turned into No Country....

    I was just looking up this topic again. I’ve had 10 records lathed which was pretty rough and the website even warned about it. I’m very curious to try out vinyl post. That ones a Flexi disc on a postcard. And you can single order for super cheap. But I haven’t tried it yet.

    Hi Landon. Really dig your videos. We almost had our last album pressed to vinyl. Unfortunately, we got caught up dealing with the PledgeMusic fiasco and lack of funding. Luckily, we (or our fans) got most of the money back, but we ran into some other issues while trying to have copies made. We were going through Third Man and even got a couple of test prints, but they were saying 10 songs was going to diminish sound quality so they recommended we cut out a song. There were some tensions in the band, and I didn't want to compromise, so we ended up abandoning the project. I ended up ordering copies on cassette instead, which was way less of a headache, and those are actually selling, so I guess things worked out. Would have been cool to see the vinyl work out, too, but we didn't have enough of a following or support to do so. Best of luck to you and anyone else out there doing their thing! It ain't easy. 🤘

    This was sweet! Just been getting into my 424 mkii and it’s been a bit of a long learning curve. I wanted to ask, can’t you record the stereo backing track through 5/6 or 7/8? Then use the other inputs for mono and panned tracks? I’ve been doing this on the mkii but still not really understanding where that signal records to. I think it’s like master bus, but where is it actually going on the tape? Is it duplicated on both channels on both sides of the tape, or first side, or what? Do you know? Cause then when you pan the tracks after recording, wouldn’t that also pan the recorded info from 5/6 and 7/8? I’m prolly just not understanding something. the manual doesn’t go into any depth about this as those inputs are usually dedicated to Fx

    For those seeing this video for the first time, some important information: The Tascam 688 and 238 are the ONLY 8 track cassette machines besides a TOA machine that can record ALL 8 tracks at once simultaneously. All others, from Yamaha, Fostex etc.. cannot record all 8. They have 8 tracks but it buses the record ins to two separate 4 track groups.

      @magicspiral3323 ok, cool! And I'm going on the assumption that you can record one track, rewind it, and then let it play while recording the next track? That's probably obvious to most people but uh... I've been burned on recording equipment that *doesn't* do that... (Glaring at my Akai tape deck.)

    hello ! what do you think about the preamp and eg quality of this mixer ? thanks !

    • @magicspiral3323
      @magicspiral3323 4 місяці тому

      Preamp is nothing to write home about - especially if you’re looking for something with ultra low noise floor and the ability to get useable preamp overdrive. The EQ is usable, but not clinical. I use this board for virtually everything, and it’s been just fine, even if it’s not the cleanest sound. It has the ins and outs I need and it gets the job done.

    In my first studio recording experience, we recorded to one of these DAT machines. In listening to those tracks, I recently found that I really enjoyed how full it sounds. I kept attributing it to the mastering because I kept thinking we recorded everything straight to the computer. But, now realizing that “fullness” wasn’t as apparent on the other album tracks, I have a sneaking suspicion the sound of those two tracks we used a DAT machine on sound great because of, well, the DAT machine! Got a bit nostalgic and bought one on eBay. Without even considering I’m going to need some RCA cables and possibly a patch bay and an 8-track mixer. That’ll all fall into place over time. Really hoping I didn’t get a lemon, as the seller says it’s functioning perfectly as it should. We shall see. Thank you so much for the video. Will definitely help a lot when getting it all set-up.

    Absolutely amazing video. I can't congratulate you enough! Many of us who bought these machines tinkered with them but nothing more. They came out just as software was also competing and we were torn between outboard effects through signal chains in a big mixer, using these and going through the trauma of deciding if the preamps were good enough and clean enough, right down to just doing it on pro-tools which was a free download at the time. oddly my life later in life, took me down that path to work at Guitar center in California once and see what protools became. They grew up to buy Avid, which bought Digidesign and M-Audio. I was building my own mini mixer trying to market it when M-Audio's Midiman mixer came out. Then going to the M-Audio plant in Cali while working at GC made me feel like that whole empire could have been mine! So about My recorder... at one point I myself did buy a small recorder to go with my gear. Keyboards mainly, a bunchof them and I wanted somthing for recording ideas. This is my "sad" story about the VS-840 I had the VS-840 by Roland (sister company of boss) and this thing used Zip Disks. no one told me at the time I could have jus swapped that out for an IDE hard drive or put in a flash disk / CF or something if I had opened it. The zip disks had the infamous click of death, and one by one each of my disks were failing. I knew I could have backed up data to another and saved it, but there was such a futile feeling about it. Knowing no matter how many zip disks I buy would it not need to be replaced within months. It became my core mixer for other stuff, which was nice, the effects were fun, but it was so demoralizing and I had lost hope of recording like that again. Note: I was always a midi specialist so all my stuff was done on keys through outboard gear with 7 tone generator devices from pianos to synths, etc. The VS was strictly for guitar, maybe some pitched down guitar as bass, and any vocals or effects. but i can tell you, had that machine failed, the feeling of losing your work and progress would have been a major emotional blow. Even the UNDO button giving up would be terrifying. So I applaud you pushing through day by day not feeling conflicted that this could eat your work. That takes alot of trust. Your playing style is fantastic, song creation and intuition is sold pro level musician and the self assurance to know who you are and what you have to offer the world is so perfectly in place. Seeing this gives me a boost knowing if my 840 had been the 880 with the hard drive, I might have finished my stuff on it! Thanks for the video and the brief moment of group therapy which I never knew i needed! Even the manufacturers never promoted the machine to show how real of a studio it can be the way you proved this one was.

      Wow, thanks for sharing! Yes, these machines were mostly used by guitarists making demos with their rudimentary bass playing and corny drum machine parts that didn’t quite fit the song. It wasn’t long until folks went with DAW’s. There’s not much now in the market for hardware recorders, they’re best for demos and capturing band rehearsals.

    I cured myself of this disease after realizing that the more stuff I bought, the less productive, motivated and creative I became. I conned myself into believing that a particular piece of gear would take me to that mystical next level. What I ended up with is a bunch of shit on permanent display that I either didn't use, forgot how to use, or never really learned how to use in the first place, because right after getting it, I became aroused by some other gear that will level me up. . At one point I had a Roland Juno-106, Juno-60 and JX-3P - all at once...Why??? Pick the stuff you cannot deny is unused and sell it! No, don't put it in storage, get rid of it. move it along on its journey to meet another musician who will love it and use it. Or you can just admire it's awesomeness sitting there, not being used I guess...To each his own.

    Hi Landon, nice video. I have used three PCM 800 machines to record at least two dozen CD's of my own music. I'm having issues with the heads munching the Hi8 tapes. I understand the heads on these machines (as well as on the DA 88 machines) have a limited service hours and I am positive I have passed those limits. Do you know of any place that would be able to rebuild these machines? DA 88s are almost identical in every way, to me at least. Maybe I can find a couple DA 88 machines to replace these super heavy PCM 800 machines. Probably cheaper to replace than to ship to a shop somewhere. Also note: The operating examples and the set up for formatting tapes you gave in your video are dead on, and by the way, way cool. Much easier to understand than the mega confusing operation manual from Sony Sorry if I'm confusing Tascam DA 88 and the Tascam DA 38, I'm sure you get my point regardless.
