    man this video is so inspiring. sometimes i get caught up in the modern world of music, but i can for sure imagine how much fun and creativity this will unlock. album is great. the instrumentation really gives me this 90's vibe.

      Theres a reason the 90s was so much better for hiphop and limitations was a big factor, people had to try. Dudes dont even try these days, everyones sounding the same out here becuase they all go to google and download the same sound packs, i legit hear the same "lofi" stuff all the time because clearly dudes just went and got free or paid for loop packs. ITs shite.

I had a Fostex x26 but nobody told me about click tracks so I was a bit lost, then it disappeared and eventually I got into computer recording. But I'd love to do a an album just with a Dx7, Juno60 and Mirage going into.a 4track.

It has such a fantastic sound with hardly any noticable noise floor because I record as hot as possible to get a good signal to noise ratio. However I do all my recordings with DBX, but it still sounds great on mix down. Thanks for sharing your videos my friend. Kind regards. Paul.

    This was sweet! Just been getting into my 424 mkii and it’s been a bit of a long learning curve. I wanted to ask, can’t you record the stereo backing track through 5/6 or 7/8? Then use the other inputs for mono and panned tracks?
    I’ve been doing this on the mkii but still not really understanding where that signal records to. I think it’s like master bus, but where is it actually going on the tape? Is it duplicated on both channels on both sides of the tape, or first side, or what? Do you know?
    Cause then when you pan the tracks after recording, wouldn’t that also pan the recorded info from 5/6 and 7/8?
    I’m prolly just not understanding something. the manual doesn’t go into any depth about this as those inputs are usually dedicated to Fx

I found that using the DBX NR along with recording as hot as possible pretty much gets rid of the noise floor on playback. I'm forever trying to develop ways of achieving really great sound quality with good results. The high speed setting really helps too. Here is a little test recording I made on it below.

    Makes me miss my Fostex x-12. I still have the recordings though. :) All inside a nice, fat, 80's briefcase.

    Question - how did you transfer to digital in the end? :)

    • @magicspiral
      @magicspiral  4 місяці тому +1

      @@nameless2340 great question!
      I connected the stereo output of the four track to my Scarlett audio interface. I then played the tape back and mixed the four tracks down to stereo and recorded the live mix into my DAW. Then I did some light mastering and tadaaaaa! Magic.

      It’s a song simply called “I Love You.”
      Perhaps the album will see a release in the near future, but as of yet it’s not officially been released.

    Dude, it was a great video but can you make one just with the four track.. you have a whole lot of other stuff in the mix( no pun intended) and I have a terrible case of A.D.D. But I loved it!!!!

    • @magicspiral
      @magicspiral  3 роки тому

      Hey thanks for the inquiry! Not sure I’m understanding you correctly, though. Part of getting the most out of the four track is mixing multiple elements onto a single track - like a bass guitar and a vocal merged onto track one, for example. Cheers!

    After everything is recorded to tape what's your process for capturing and converting it into digital audio files for digital distribution. Do you just arm a track in Ableton and hit play on the Portastudio? Any limiting or mastering in a DAW?

    • @magicspiral
      @magicspiral  4 роки тому

      Yeah that’s basically what I did. Light mastering to tame the levels.

    i’m currently recording on a 424 with very similar pre amps and other gear; i’m blown away with how little noise there is in your recordings, was there digital mastering done specifically to reduce tape hiss?
    also, how do you bounce the whole mix to a digital interface while retaining certain stereo effects? i have a song with guitars panned hard left and right which sounds great on the 4 track but when i get into a daw it’s sounds like a garbage chorus effect… lol
    i have the left and right rca outputs going into the 2 channels of my scarlett 2i2 and then i pan each channel left and right accordingly. you would think this would give you the complete stereo image but it’s really just giving me a complete mono mix on the left and right..

      Thanks for watching! I didn't use NR or post-cleanup, so a compliment on low noise is a pleasant surprise. I advise getting a good sound source before you hit the tape. I like to record pretty hot when cutting to tape and bouncing for this project was minimal. I use Type ii cassettes as well, so maybe all that helped keep the noise low.
      As far as the 2i2, there could be record settings in your DAW you need to check when setting up a new audio track. I did record the stereo mix through an interface and did some light mastering. No magic, just running with what I gave myself. Keep recording! - Landonious

      @@magicspiral you are absolutely right and i actually answered my own question just minutes before i read your comment lol. when selecting a new track in logic pro, i needed to select “inputs 1 + 2” as its own track, which would recognize the stereo image coming out of the 4 track from both inputs. previously i was recording track 1 = left output and track 2 = right output of 4 track
      and you’re right about getting a good sound source, i have some noisy gear!
