Beauty! For me the year was 1997, I remember being in high school, my first punk band recorded an album with a tascam tape 4 track... A three way splitter for 3 mics on the drums onto one track, bass and guitar all live off the floor, vocals done after.. We spent so much time setting up sleeping bags and blankets to try and cancel out sound bleed...the results are actually pretty frigging awesome haha...we then ran the tracks into the sound card on the pc, had to get those nice mp3s so we could burn them to disk! man, those were the days :)

That is such a great story it really has inspired me to push forward when I get frustrated working on Music gear I purchase and run into difficulty' getting to work Boss/Roland always make this look so easy on there demo videos but not true when you get it home. Great Company though best products. Your story has me thinking of getting my boss br-1200 out of storage and giving it another try just for fun. Started listening to your album . Really good so far!

Me too, man! (Thanks for the comment). Great little unit. (Purchased one back in 2004). I recorded a whole album myself with that one. I had purchased the Boss BR-800 in 2019 in an attempt to upgrade, but I was disappointed with it, and think the 864 was allot better, and recently traded in the BR-800 at Guitar Center, to take a chance on the Zoom R24. (So far, at least, it seems more like the BR-864 then the BR-800! Believe it or not). Keeping my fingers crossed though, as I am currently going thru the learning curve associated with a completely different manufacturer and brand name...

I have a Micro BR and it was my first glimpse into the recording world, I used it on all my recordings until I switched into using an interface and a DAW, but it's really nice to record without a computer. It's really cool that you choose to experiment with this now "old" technology to record, it has it's own charm.

I am thinking of buying one of these used and making an album with pocket operators. Thanks for the inspiration, man! How did you learn to mix and operate the control so good? I feel I'd get lost trying to focus on the green LCD screen. I love that you've got burn your creations to CD. That is awesome and vintage as hell. Next, sample your beats for the CD from old 8 tracks, cassette, and vinyl recordings for the ultimate lo-fi album!

    Hats off to you!
I could only imagine how tedious certain things could get but it must be extremely rewarding.
I have Br864. It has tested my temper on many occasion but mainly due to operator error.
Over the (over 10) years I have had it I still am learning to use different functions and has come in handy for using it as a stand alone Fx unit for instruments and vocals to learning how to create backing tracks and just programming the drums to bounce into a DAW for other projects , using it as a mobile recorder to interview people, create samples etc. A pity technology moves so fast in a way because I can do all those things much more easier on an iPad now but I still love the physicality of using it instead of tapping a screen, mouse or keyboard. So it sort of makes it seem obsolete.
I'm not even sure if the new Compact Flash Cards work with it either and other downside is because of overuse I can easily lose and have lost hours of work due to glitching when unloading a final mastered mix onto a PC or other storage. This been to scared to fill up the storage with new things. Frustrating and dissapointing in that respect.
But have done a number of 'albums' on it to sell at gigs over the years so it has definitely paid for itself.
The unit has also taught me a lot about recording in a certain way and sound in general. Sure beats a 4 track cassette re-order lol.
    Cheers mate.

I have recorded a lot of music on one of these! Pretty good sounds, easy to use, can record in a room, while people are watching TV, or whatever, mine still works good, when I was a kid I got a Fostex X15 cassette 4 track, when it first came out, 500 dollars in the 80s, that was a lot of money, this recorder so much better, I still use it!

Absolutely amazing video. I can't congratulate you enough! Many of us who bought these machines tinkered with them but nothing more. They came out just as software was also competing and we were torn between outboard effects through signal chains in a big mixer, using these and going through the trauma of deciding if the preamps were good enough and clean enough, right down to just doing it on pro-tools which was a free download at the time.
oddly my life later in life, took me down that path to work at Guitar center in California once and see what protools became. They grew up to buy Avid, which bought Digidesign and M-Audio. I was building my own mini mixer trying to market it when M-Audio's Midiman mixer came out. Then going to the M-Audio plant in Cali while working at GC made me feel like that whole empire could have been mine!
So about My recorder... at one point I myself did buy a small recorder to go with my gear. Keyboards mainly, a bunchof them and I wanted somthing for recording ideas.
This is my "sad" story about the VS-840
I had the VS-840 by Roland (sister company of boss) and this thing used Zip Disks. no one told me at the time I could have jus swapped that out for an IDE hard drive or put in a flash disk / CF or something if I had opened it.
The zip disks had the infamous click of death, and one by one each of my disks were failing. I knew I could have backed up data to another and saved it, but there was such a futile feeling about it. Knowing no matter how many zip disks I buy would it not need to be replaced within months.
It became my core mixer for other stuff, which was nice, the effects were fun, but it was so demoralizing and I had lost hope of recording like that again.
Note: I was always a midi specialist so all my stuff was done on keys through outboard gear with 7 tone generator devices from pianos to synths, etc. The VS was strictly for guitar, maybe some pitched down guitar as bass, and any vocals or effects.
but i can tell you, had that machine failed, the feeling of losing your work and progress would have been a major emotional blow. Even the UNDO button giving up would be terrifying.
So I applaud you pushing through day by day not feeling conflicted that this could eat your work. That takes alot of trust.
Your playing style is fantastic, song creation and intuition is sold pro level musician and the self assurance to know who you are and what you have to offer the world is so perfectly in place.
Seeing this gives me a boost knowing if my 840 had been the 880 with the hard drive, I might have finished my stuff on it!
Thanks for the video and the brief moment of group therapy which I never knew i needed! Even the manufacturers never promoted the machine to show how real of a studio it can be the way you proved this one was.

    • @magicspiral3323
      @magicspiral3323  4 місяці тому +1

Wow, thanks for sharing! Yes, these machines were mostly used by guitarists making demos with their rudimentary bass playing and corny drum machine parts that didn’t quite fit the song.
It wasn’t long until folks went with DAW’s. There’s not much now in the market for hardware recorders, they’re best for demos and capturing band rehearsals.

Haaa!!! This is an awesome story bro. I'm an original owner of the BR1180 when it first came out ...I believe that was 2001...2002. It's been nearly 20 years and not only do I still have it and use it but I purchased another one from this guy who barely used it. Like you---I have had soooooo much fun recording on this that I never switched over to Digital Audio Workstations on Mac and PC. Oh---wait yes I did. The process with ProTools nearly runined my musical life. I remember when I busted this out NO ONE took me seriously. It was annoying as fu***! But to-date I have over 400 songs all recorded using the BR1180. They should have never discontinued making standalone recorders.

How did you get drums recorded with this and what about tempo changes? We’re you recording freely or did you utilize a tempo map. I still have my BR-1180 CD. Whenever I made songs they would be robot sounding because the built in rhythm patterns I would program to keep me in time were directly on the grid. I wish there was a way to humanize the patterns I programmed.

    • @magicspiral3323
      @magicspiral3323  Рік тому +1

Most of the drums were sequenced using the Korg Electribe ES-1 and recorded freely without the BR-1180’s internal tempo, so I didn’t have to worry about tempo changes. The drums were often recorded first, providing me with the tempo. I had to perform a DJ style drum mix in real time, bringing in and taking out elements on cue or wherever I felt it. I would keep track of where I was by singing the song in my head while I did it.

I got the BR 864 , it’s 8 Track too, the FX all the same, but you Store on this on a Compact Flash Card, it has USB and it’s easy to transfer the files to your PC, but you can Record not that much on a CF Card, for me work a 1GB Card, but you don’t want copy 1GB with USB 1.1…it’s a horror!
The Quality is in my Opinion CD Quality and good enough for a final CD.
The BR 864 is able to load your own Drum Samples to style a custom DrumKit!
I’m looking for a BR 1200 same possibilities like the 1600 but only two inputs, but when you don’t want to record a complete drumset an arrange with the drumcomputer inside the BR and that is very easy and intuitive!
To style a Drum Part, it is important to record your guitar on a Metronome, after finished your Guitar Track, it’s super easy to build up your Drum Track..it’s work on the 4/4 Metronome Blocks…a Verse begin on a 1 and ends on 4 and the Chorus begin at the next 1 and ends also on the 4!
If not you can split the Drum Pattern, to 1 Beat!
And that Pattern you put inside a new DrumTrack V2 …V1 is your Metronome!
That is super cool and so fast…nothing is faster to build up a whole Track, as a Boss BR Recorder.
And the Guitar FX are today allways Amazing!

The drum machine is on TRACK 11 labeled [STEREO/RHYTHM LOOP].
It's very powerful. There are two buttons above the track 11 fader. The left button starts, stops, and cues-up the drum arrangement. The right button allows you to Edit.
This is going to blow your mind... there are about 50 pre-defined patterns available in several styles such as rock, heavy, pop, house, hip-hop, etc. Each pattern is a set of patterns! A pattern has an intro, a verse, a fill, another verse and another fill and an ending. You can create your own patterns with the pattern editor. And there are 8 drum kits from sampled to 808 style drum sounds. You can have different tempos and time signatures in the same song.

If I were to get one of these, could I use it as vocal effects processor? Running the outs into a PA or mixer. I have a Digitech Vocal Effects Processor, but I’m not to crazy about it? Figured out the USB only to connect to a laptop/PC, not for inputting pre-made instrumentation into the BOSS, or as a component power ( only AA batteries or adapter ). What is the best mic to use; XLR or Line In jack? Headphones have low volume so does that mean I need something boosting the mic or the headphones? Lastly, binging instruction videos, but I am having a difficult time figuring out how to record or even record a drum pattern. 20 years on cpu since Tascam days, and I'm stuck.
