Trapping Non-native Invasives Using VanErt Trap
[Credit Saif Tahsin for providing this video]
When hosting North American native, cavity-nesting birds, it's important to also remove & eliminate the non-native English House Sparrow (HOSP). The HOSP will kill native, cavity-nesting birds such as Bluebirds, Tree Swallows and the young of Purple Martins and other North American species.
Note: it is legal in the USA to eliminate this species using humane methods.
Read more about the impact of these non-native species on our Native cavity nesting birds here: www.reconnectwithnature.org/news-events/the-buzz/bluebirds-saved-from-extinction/

Purple Martin - Jumper Adoption
Переглядів 531Рік тому
*NOTE! Only try this method when jumpers cannot be returned to their original gourds. In this case, I had multiple gourds with the same age nestlings that were ready-to-fledge, so I not only didn't know where to put these back and I also didn't want to flush out older nestlings. In 2022, I tried this method with 3 'jumpers' and an SY male purple martin ended up adopting them - feeding through t...

Because they pose a threat to our cavity-nesting birds (purple martins, bluebirds, tree swallows, tufted titmice, woodpeckers, etc.), their ability to nest & multiply must be managed. This Zoom presentation was hosted by Kathy Freeze and Courtney Rousseau of the Purple Martin Fan...

everyone should, but that doesnt mean we also dont eradicate invasive animals. we introduced sparrows to be invasive, and we can undo it as well. Cats are also invasive, hence why its a responsible thing to keep them inside, and to not feed feral cats.

The English House Sparrow and European Starling are both non-native species in the United States. Exactly like the python in the Everglades. If left to proliferate, they would eliminate all our native cavity-nesting birds. They almost decimated our bluebird population in the late 20th century. I put my trail cam out by my pond and got video of raccoons swimming across it to climb on a raft. We don't have black rat snacks this far west Because of my concern about ground nest predators (ducks, geese, turkeys, pheasants etc) I have given up and just feed the raccoons cheap cat kibble during the nesting season. During hunting season the neighbors shoot or trap them

No. I use the ground (soil) to conduct the path back to the charger. We have ample rain, and high mineral content to the soil so I don't need a connected ground. It would help in many cases and is very simple to install, so definitely add that if you think you might need to.

Very interesting adoption study. I am very surprised to learn this. I also would be interested in your findings if you find this method of adoption successful again. I have an occasional jumper or 2 for what ever the reason. I always put them back with a brood of roughly the size if able. I have even placed a younger or older jumper in any nest cavity and they are usually adopted and cared for until they fledge, even if behind or ahead of their nest mates. I see you placed this single gourd at the same height as the others and in close proximity and furnished egg shells or oyster shells to hold the adults interest. I am wondering if this may have a lot to do with the success of this method you had. Thank you for this post. Please keep us updated if you can.

Excellent Video! Thanks for summarizing predator protection options. I just lost 13 (nestlings + eggs) and the snake was still in the cavity when I did a nest check. Martins were very active prior to my regular nest check. I had a bird net around the pole, but no predator guard. The bird net was wrapped too tightly around the pole. I have had martins for 23 years and this is the first snake attack. I was researching predator guards when I came across your video.

Rampage, evening I placed a ST-1 trap on the house with bread, caught the male next morning, I rang his neck completely off,I was so pissed, then the BB came back and nest. They're an invading non invasive species that needs to be eliminated
