Three Doors to Serge Lutens: Leave Your Sorrows, Awaken to New Horizons
Serge Lutens didn’t just create perfumes; he redefined the very concept of niche fragrance. With La Fille Tour De Fer, Écrin de Fumée, and Five O’Clock Au Gingembre, his compositions blur the lines between personal scent and olfactory high fashion. Metallic rose, smoky gingerbread, and warm spiced tea become more than notes-they’re fragments of a world that expands the boundaries of what perfume can express. Amber, vanilla, and earthy undertones ground these creations, making them as cozy as they are daring. These aren’t just fragrances-they’re an invitation to rediscover the power of scent as art.

    Is Écrin the latest attempt to modernize the house? Maybe, well, it's nice... but already boring, a thousand of these "by the fireplaces". I have a few old and memorable Sheldrake's creations. And my collection is very strictly curated and must fit into one chest. So - no. Modern SL looks sad and depressing, like an old rock star. Personally, I want fresh blood. Sorry, I don't like such comments, like mine, just a bit angry about the price increase in their online store. 😿 EDF at least has traces of old Lutens' "dna".

    • @MariaMeliora
      @MariaMeliora 2 дні тому

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts so candidly-your passion for Serge Lutens is clear, and I respect how thoughtfully curated your collection is. I can understand why the shift in direction and pricing changes might feel frustrating, especially when you’ve connected deeply with Sheldrake’s iconic creations. Perfume is so personal, and it’s hard when a brand evolves in ways that don’t align with the nostalgia or artistry we cherish.

    I really enjoy your eloquent commentary, Maria. What a pleasure to have some poetry woven in and out of the reviews. Most of my SLs have been blind buys, the first being Fils de Joie, and that was when I fell head over heels. Polite and friendly Annick Goutal perfumes is what I was always used to, but FdJ shook me emotionally, touching on what’s hidden. For me, it’s a highly unusual jasmine, which I cherish and have purchased a backup bottle to ensure a lifetime’s supply 😂. It’s not for everyone, and that what’s fascinating about SL perfumes, as I feel the perfumes either choose or reject you, not the other way around.

    • @MariaMeliora
      @MariaMeliora 2 дні тому

      Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your beautiful journey with scents! I love how you described Fils de Joie as something that "shook you emotionally"-that’s such a perfect way to capture the transformative power of fragrance. I completely agree that Serge Lutens creations feel almost sentient, as though they decide who they’ll embrace. Fils de Joie is such a radiant, evocative jasmine, and it’s wonderful that you’ve connected with it deeply enough to invest in a lifetime supply! Your thoughts resonate with the idea that perfume isn’t just something we wear-it’s something we experience.

    I'm with you on Ecrin de Fumee. Certainly not as smoky as I was anticipating. Nothing like AdO's Bois Sikar or even the sludgy leathery tobacco of my bespoke Radagast, which is like 50% tobacco absolute. 😆 Some have compared the Serge to Vanille Havane (at least in the sillage) and I have to agree. The latter is still better though. As for 5OAG, I think you nailed it. 👌 An excellent vid Maria.

      Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and comparisons-it’s always fascinating to hear how others experience these fragrances. I completely agree that Ecrin de Fumée leans far less smoky than something like Bois Sikar,which fills the rooms and sets my fire alarms off within a second lol

    "With La Fille Tour de Fer i picture a sunlit bathroom where a young woman is taking a bubble bath. Even the water and the bubbles have a pale, translucent pink hue to them. There's no steam or heat tho, as if she's taking a cold bath". That's my impression of it and thats what i wrote on fragrantica.

      Thank you so much for your kind words and support! I'm glad you're enjoying the content. As for Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan, it’s a beautiful, resinous amber fragrance with rich, warm, and slightly spicy notes-very elegant and timeless. That being said, whether it's a good blind buy depends on your personal taste and experience with amber-heavy scents. If you enjoy bold, aromatic fragrances with a lot of character, it could be a great choice. However, I always recommend sampling first if possible, especially with niche perfumes, as they can be quite distinctive. Let me know what you decide-I’d love to hear your thoughts!

    Makes me wonder what role personal AI assistants will play in the future with these kinds of choices. Couldn't agree more with reading reviews and asking for referential/similar perfumes from the community. Another person's genuine feedback can be invaluable. And decants....yeah, a game changer for me as well. Still working on creative ways of storing them though. 😄 Methinks that "smart" storage may be the way of the future. 😉

    For Kilian, there are three fragrances I really enjoy: - Back to Black (a honeyed cherry tobacco with soft spices and an almond powdery edge. Normally, I hate powder, but it sits just right here.) - Liaisons Dangereuses (bright and fruity with a jammy rose, a bit of cinnamon, and a beautiful effervescent quality. I feel for this when I thought I hated fruity florals.) - Rosa Oud (created back with Oud was very new to Western perfumery, just before the trend started. I still love this one. It’s a gorgeous humid rose. The saffron doesn’t smell a thing like the saffron from BR540. It actually smells like saffron, which lends to the humid effect.) To be honest with you, I tried and bought these all about a decade ago, so I have no idea how current formulations stack up if they’ve changed. I assume at least one or two had to.

    • @MariaMeliora
      @MariaMeliora 7 днів тому

      What a beautifully detailed breakdown! Your descriptions are so vivid I can almost smell them through the screen. It’s fascinating how fragrances can evolve not only in formulation but also in how we perceive them over time. You clearly have a refined nose and a deep appreciation for storytelling through scent. I love that you highlight the nuances like the "humid rose" and the "effervescent quality"-it’s poetic. If I dive into these, I’ll be sure to imagine them as they were a decade ago, through your lens. Thank you for sharing!

    Great ideas, Maria. That idea of taking small side steps in notes and styles is a really good one. I've not blind bought bottles in a couple of years, it's been too disappointing for me. I've reactivated my perfume subscription again this year. I do live near a city where there are several department stores, but there are no independent perfumeries. It's not the ideal environment for me to test. Most things end up smelling not so great to me, and the sales associates I have spoken with aren't really into perfume. I'd much rather order samples and smaller decants and sniff them in the comfort of my own home. If I don't love them, I pass them on.

    • @MariaMeliora
      @MariaMeliora 7 днів тому

      completely understand where you're coming from-blind buying can be such a gamble, and it sounds like you've found a really smart, practical way to explore fragrances on your own terms.I love that you're creating a space at home to connect with scents in a way that feels comfortable and personal. Sampling and decants are such a great way to dip your toes in without the pressure :_

    This house is frustrating to me. I’ve nearly tried their whole lineup and I’m almost always disappointed with the fragrance compared to the note breakdown. It’s like they overblend their fragrance to avoid risk but what ends up happening is they become quite forgettable. Even with the few of their fragrances I like there always feels like something missing. Some of my favorites are you, frustration, eau de protection, fat electrician and soul of my soul

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It sounds like you’ve had quite the journey exploring this house’s lineup, and I totally get where you’re coming from. Fragrance is such a deeply personal experience, and sometimes the anticipation set by note breakdowns can lead to expectations that don’t quite align with the final scent. I think it’s fascinating how subjective this art form is-what feels overblended or “safe” to one person might feel harmonious and balanced to another. It’s great to hear you’ve found a few favorites in the mix, though-those are some excellent choices! If you’re still curious about exploring more, it might be worth revisiting them with a fresh perspective later!

    Pryn (Lomros) does a decent job at keeping things weird. You might want to try some of his concoctions in case you're feeling...adventurous. 😄 Ended up selling my bottle of Cigar Rum since I wasn't wearing it, but his style never really jived with me. I'm more on team Rogue. 😉 As for intentional smelling, why not start with natural environments? Go outside and start smelling things, especially in the spring and summer. I won't lie that I must've looked awkward doing it in 2010, but I prefer the term "pioneer" over "weirdo" n'est-ce pas? 😂 Good way to train the nose for free, as well as identify potential human-made environmental olfactory aggravators. Or as I like to call them..."oversprayers." 😆 Quick story - I recently concluded a 2 month crossover experiment on real-world perfume compliments. Won't go into the entire protocol, but I ended up confirming a pretty obvious direct correlation that I suspected for years, but never really put into practice. And it has nothing to do perfume. Can you guess what it is? 😊 (I'll reply to your replies with the answer) 💜

      @MariaMeliora 10 днів тому

      Pryn Lomros? Now you’ve got me curious-what exactly does ‘keeping things weird’ mean in his world? I’m picturing notes that don’t play by the rules and a creative director who probably laughs at the word ‘safe.’ Educate me, please.

    • @MariaMeliora
      @MariaMeliora 10 днів тому

      And yes, intentional outdoor sniffing-an absolute favorite of mine, too. It’s such a timeless classic for resetting both the nose and the brain. Nothing like letting nature do its thing, grounding you in the moment, if I manage to let it

    • @MariaMeliora
      @MariaMeliora 10 днів тому

      Now, your experiment-this is where I’m hooked. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about negative spaces: the blessed absence of bad things-be it bad smells, bad manners, or even over-talking. Those generous pauses that leave room for a better conversation, a better impression... maybe even a compliment well-placed. Am I on the right track, or do I need to sniff out more clues? Can’t wait for your big reveal!

    • @justaddlight
      @justaddlight 10 днів тому

      @@MariaMeliora You're very much on the right track. The answer is 🥁►►► A genuine smile! Yup. Especially when combined with eye contact. I know it's been touted for decades as a quick way to make a better impression, but I've since concluded that it's also the easiest way to open doors of all kinds - pun intended. And whether or not the effect is superconscious, people seem to be able to detect a fake one, so genuineness is paramount. Contrary to the pressumption that all Canadians are kind, most people up here still keep to themselves and avoid confrontation whenever possible. So compliments from strangers are a rarity. A genuine warming smile in a close contact setting - say, waiting in line at a shop - seems to act like a trigger or catalyst that opens some sort of door or repression, perhaps even more so than casual conversation. Undoubtedly, complimenting someone's smell can certainly be percieved as a potential invasion of privacy, and yet it's really just a matter of breaking the proverbial ice - a subjective mental barrier born out of cautionary survival. More so than breaking, warming smiles tend to melt them unusually quickly and allow the waters of communication to flow. In a world where walking around with air pods has become a societal norm, that kind of casual connection is something that we've lost and perhaps still yearn for deep down. So if fragrance is the fuel, the smile is the spark. Let the fires of kindness burn. ❤‍🔥

      @@MariaMeliora All I'll say is that his compositions feel somewhat jarring and discordant at times. Unrefined, with bases of chemical animosity, hinting at cacca-peepee-poopoo pants. The Strangers line is considerably more appealing imo; but at times, I still envision him as somewhat of a mad hatter. More so than Miguel Matos.

    I think my best scent memory evoking perfume is Chipmunk by Zoologist. I first sampled it in 2023 but got a partial bottle in 2024. A very kind friend who sent me the sample, also sold me her bottle. Chipmunk vividly reminds me of the smell of the old cottage of my Aunt who passed away 30 years ago this year. She was only 44. The age I will be this coming summer. She had a love of gardening, like her mother, and there were always muddy boots by the back door, trays of soil full of seedlings all around the house, fresh garden produce on the table, and flowers drying hanging from the ceiling. Add that to baking spices along with the scent of soap and talcum powder, which was called Imperial Leather (a bar soap I still buy now). I'm wearing it today actually. Inhaling the scent from my jumper, it feels like she is never too far away 🥰

Your description of your aunt’s cottage, her passions, and the comforting details of her world is so vivid that I feel like I can almost smell it myself. It’s a testament to how meaningful fragrances can be, not just as sensory experiences but as emotional bridges to those we’ve loved and lost. I hope Chipmunk continues to bring you that sense of closeness and warmth-what a special way to honor her memory.

    I need to try Russian Tea. I have no Russian heritage but my Grandmother, who was born in the 1920s, drank as much strong black tea as most Brits of that age and she had a huge allotment... blackcurrants, raspberries, gooseberries, strawberries and all sorts of vegetables. Summer was always fruit filled, with lots of jam, syrups and pie filling making. And then later would come the apples. I loved the scent through her house when she was boiling her berries

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Maria. As always, very knowledgable and differentiated, and in combination with the splendid stylish appearance that you are making, it was a real joy to watch and listen throughout this year. I‘ve always loved perfume and have always been wearing it. Having sticked to ca. 10 bottles for years prior to 2024, I have accumulated around new 12 perfumes this year (travel and full sizes) and dozens of new samples. Observing me wearing everything, I find it sometimes takes almost neverending endurance to finish something - either flakons or samples. I assume, we do not want to throw any drops in the bin when paying for it. Wouldn‘t it be fair to perish something, though, considering that life is too short to just stick to the goal of emptying everything? - wishing you a happy, healthy and olfactorily sensational new year 2025 🎉
