Thank you so much for this video. I’ve never considered the connection between growing up in poverty and patterns in later adulthood of overspending, overconsuming, and collecting objects. I really appreciated your video a few months ago about mindful hedonism and I’m grateful for content creators and influencers who are willing to discuss shopping addiction. Your content is so thoughtful. ❤
The connection between our past experiences and later habits is so important to explore, no matter how shameful or insignificant or benign it might seem from the surface. I’m really glad you found value in the video on mindful hedonism, too. Sending you lots of gratitude and appreciation for being here! ❤
This has to be the most insightful presentation on perfume collecting/perfume addiction (an affliction that I suffer from) that I have ever seen. Thank you for such an in-depth, relatable analysis. What an eloquent, cerebral approach to a sensorial obsession.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I'm really glad the presentation resonated with you. It's fascinating how something as sensory as fragrance can spark such a deep intellectual and emotional connection. I think there's so much to explore in the way scent intertwines with memory, identity, and even culture. I appreciate you engaging with the content on that level, thank you
I legitimately was diagnosed with obsessive. Compulsive disorder since I was a child. Somehow in my late 40s, I managed to get away from very hard drugs. Now it's close to 200 bottles of fragrance. I can definitely see where it can be an addiction and obsession in its own right. Although I do feel I have a passion for fragrances now. I even have test strips so I can spray to enjoy 😆 thatnk you the interesting videos and information 🍻
Thank you so much for sharing your story. It’s incredible that you’ve come such a long way, and I truly admire your passion for fragrances. There’s definitely a fine line between passion and obsession, and I can relate to the joy of a good test strip spritz! 😆 I’m glad the videos resonate with you-wishing you all the best on your fragrance journey!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I'm really glad you found the points engaging. The industry's direction is definitely an important topic, and I appreciate your interest. I'll certainly continue to explore and share more on this-there's a lot to unpack!
Thank you for picking up on that! Growing up in poverty can shape our mindset and opportunities in profound ways, often influencing how we view both material and non-material "possessions" throughout life. It's a complex topic that deserves more conversation. Glad it resonated with you!
A great topic Maria, and very interesting ideas. Personally, I'm not sure that addictions of any sort are so much about "chasing the next hit" than they are about releasing the nagging disonnance caused by subconscious stress. That stress can even be a result of a 3-second clip featuring a proponderance of "hyper" stimuli meant to bypass the critical factor and trigger a mindless, yet deeply seated survival response. The programs are always in there, running, growing and building to a point that the internal stress forces us to search desperately for ways to avoid facing it. By definition, avoidance behaviour or procrastination. I wouldn't consider it pathogenic myself, but more of a natural defence mechanism, since the buildup of stress often triggers long standing viral flareups and can even result in adrenal fatigue. The subsequent depression and irritability leads to more comfort seeking and the cycle continues. Fortunately, AFTER dealing directly with the subconscious to help us understand the source of our stress, the real cure for overstimulation besides a revelation in perspective/self may in fact be...whatever the f*** the subconscious says. 😄 I know, uber scientific. But rarely (maybe never) does it fight fire with fire. In fact, sometimes I wonder how many us ordinarily live in a perpetual, yet paradoxical state of balancing burnout with understimulation, mediated by the coinciding endocrine imbalances. The solution isn't more drugs, more organization or more of ANYTHING really, but often just understanding of why less exists. And TIME. Time to breathe, time to think, TO LET GO of those worries that are so often self-imposed, in response to fictitious conditioning. Catharsis is literally a thought away; and from experience, so often a product of forgiveness. 💡 At least...as far as addictions go. Great point at the end about the role of social conditioning. 🤝
Thank you for such a thoughtful take on the topic! You’re absolutely right-addictions often go much deeper than just chasing a “hit”, which is one of manifestations rather than the core of it. Stress and avoidance behaviors definitely play a huge role, and it’s fascinating how these subconscious programs run in the background, driving our actions. I love the way you framed it as a defense mechanism rather than something purely pathogenic. Really appreciate your perspective!
The subconscious truly holds so much power, and sometimes the simplest solutions are the hardest to accept-less can be more, and giving ourselves the time and space to just be is huge. Catharsis really is often just a thought away, as you said, and forgiveness (both of ourselves and others) can unlock so much. - love it!
When I got into perfume I was worried it might be an addiction but I bought what I wanted and was curious of and I’m satisfied with what I bought for now. I agree with many of your points including scarcity mindset and lack of community or ways to engage. UA-cam especially encourages people liking things rather than recognizing differences. We don’t have to smell the same
It’s great to hear that you’ve found satisfaction with your collection for now! I completely agree-there’s so much more to fragrance than just liking the same things, and embracing our unique preferences is what makes it all so fun. UA-cam does tend to push certain trends, but we definitely don’t all have to smell the same! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! 😊
Thank you so much, that really means a lot to me! 😊 I do share some of the content on other platforms, including my podcast (Spotify, amazon, Apple). You can find me there if you’re interested! Really appreciate your support! If you know someone who might enjoy this type of content, I would really appreciate your share!
I try hard to not buy hyped up perfumes anymore. I will only buy a perfume that I have researched and can absolutely not live without for more than two or three weeks and if I’m still thinking about it, I will purchase it. But no more believing the hype! It is difficult when the brand new hyped up perfumes hit and everyone’s talking about them. There is so much FOMO involved and that is what I am learning to discern and stay away from.
It sounds like you're really honing in on a thoughtful, intentional approach to your perfume choices, and I think that's fantastic. It's so easy to get swept up in the excitement when a new fragrance is being hyped, but the fact that you're taking time to reflect and make sure it’s something you truly want is admirable. FOMO can be a powerful force, but your strategy of waiting and considering how
While you do mention the ease of racking up many $$ worth of purchases with cash that should be in reserve or going to the true necessities of living such as basic food/basic clothing/rent/utilities, you don't mention the effect that the order fulfillment pipeline can have. I found myself accelerating spending on perfumes and raw materials for a few consecutive days while waiting for those first orders to come in - sort of sucking on a false oxygen feed pipe to get what I needed. Then I'd receive an avalanche of stuff over the subsequent few days and feel like an fool - much more than I needed all told, only because I could not be gratified instantly and get that dopamine rush. So I ultimately imposed an artificial cap on what I could *spend* per day - shop online and queue up items in carts all you want, but only actually pull the trigger and *spend* $X/day. I found that tended to prioritise spending better, to even out fulfillment, and that I lasted much longer into the month with less pain. Hope that helps someone, but of course I realise it is no cure - it's just a smoothing function.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and thoughtful strategy! I really appreciate how you’ve laid out the psychological aspect of the order fulfillment process-many of us can relate to that feeling of chasing the dopamine hit from instant gratification, only to be overwhelmed when everything arrives all at once.
I also have seen the content creators who have gone from having decent or massive collections to wanting only 5 or some arbitrary number. I find it weird. I don’t relate so I don’t engage in it.
I get what you mean-how some creators go from large collections to wanting only a small number to me is the manifestation of the same mental problem, just in a different decor. Ultimately, tt’s all about finding what works for you personally, and if it doesn’t resonate, it’s totally okay not to engage with it. Fragrance is such a personal journey! Thanks for sharing your perspective! 😊
I find it really disappointing that I only came across one youtube creator in the perfume community seriously reflected on the BBC report of Egyptian jasmine pickers, the rest all went silient. If that does not get you to question the conscience of all the manufacturers and youtubers in this industry, I don't know what will. Not saying consumers are victims, but let's have some perspective and realise that consumers are playees rather than players in this game. I once stumbled across a fairly popular perfume channel where that lady said she liked expensive stuff. What really made me uncomfortable was the amount of comments agreeing to this. I immediately knew that I did not belong there. I guess my point is, just don't get carried away, with anything.
@@siennahao6503 we discussed that report in a previous news recap if you are curious to hear more on that particular topic. The scent and flavor community is quite vast and diverse indeed, to each their own
There is a much more realistic reason it wasn't discussed more - too much content out there, it is literally impossible to require of oneself or anyone to be aware if every article video or documentary. People overestimate how accessible or viral any piece of information is really. 😢 it never showed up in my news, I don't have time to scan the world wide web and only landed on it from another person who shared it directly. Otherwise there is no way I would have known.

oh thank you! if you know anyone who could get joy out these, I'll appreciate a share!
Where have you been my whole life. Thank you and all success to you.
hehe and here we all are!
Maria is such a breath of fresh air in the somewhat stinky fragrance community 😆
Very insightful and thought provoking points on the industry and its unfortunate trajectory. Please continue to post on this topic!

Thanks for watching and engaging with the ideas!
I just love your videos!! I like to read books on fragrance as much as I can as another way to enjoy this hobby. Are there any that you recommend?
i have a video on books about perfumes, if you do a quick search on the channel!
