I am surprised to see even though its called Mark McLaughlin's war and Peace the errata says designer John Gant
@@SaxonChronicles Yes, McLaughlin was the original designer for the Avalon Hill version, but John Gant did the redesign.
Losses in the larger force are dependent on number of strength points in the smaller force, not the number of strength points in their own (larger) force.
I played this in the 70s but on re-visiting it all these years I was surprised at how bad it is by todays standards. Ugly map, bland counters and lots of fiddly rules that really little in the way of depth. Nostalgia is a powerful emotion but there are far better games both (board and computer) out there that simulate WW2 grand strategy better than this bloated dinosaur.
@@John-k6f9k Would you say that Advanced Third Reich aged better than the original?
I have played several smaller scenarios as solo games. (Yes, I do play a lot with my own spreadsheets and random generation of outcomes.) I have started the game 3 times with different sets of friends, but it take a large commitment of time, and were never successful in getting very far. Maybe in my retirement...? Oh, and definitely use the 2010 rule set as it consolidates a lot of loose ends.
Correct me if i sm wrong but this contingent of infantry are exactly the same figures put out by Revell. I have both sets for the Revell AWI series.
Both the Revell American Militia and Imex George Washington's Army were the same as the Accurate American Militia. Some Imex sets contained a mounted figure, but not all.
One of the best ever…would love to see Compass buy the rights and reprint and update it. Wonder if it is on Vassal..🧐. How would you change the game if you could?
Too bad the rules and scenarios are so poorly written…40 year old rules. I gave away my copy…they had a chance to polish it up and clarify things but only worked on the map. Pity. John Grant should have never taken on such a project. He is also a real jerk on Board Game Geek if you ask questions. The errata proves the point…brand new printing and have to download errata…hilarious. Maybe I will buy a reprint in the future if a real designer works on it.
hi french player i bought this game but no scoresheet in core game... do you have one please ?
Played the complete General War with 4 friends in 86-87. Took us 6 months. Kept it set up in a closed off room. We ended with an Alliance win around turn 20.
Oh wow that's a long time. How often did you play?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 I want to say it was most evenings for 1-4 hours. Long time ago.
i love this game good luck finding people to play
I recently found a used copy of this game at a local store (2nd & Charles) for $50. I have NO idea if it’s complete. Do you happen to know where I could find a full parts list for it?
Hmm let me check the rulebook and see if it says there. Board game geek might have it listed somewhere. Let me dig my copy out and see. I can get back with you.
@@tabletoptemplar2486 you’re a Godsend and a saint.
boardgamegeek.com/thread/1433355/full-list-components Here you go. I found a post that covers all the components in the game.
Hey! So I unboxed my copy of the game I’d told you about and went through it…we found it’s missing two pieces, one black square and one red square. Do you think these pieces missing could have a big impact on the game?
@@fracturedkoi1 The best test if your ever unsure is to try and set the game up. Follow the instructions for setup. On the back of the pieces it says the hex that they should start in. Go to page 20, section Q in the rulebook for the campaign setup and go down the list one by one and set it up and see if anything is missing. If all the pieces are there from set-up, then the missing pieces must be reinforcements. Let me know what you find out.
Where are Charles and Hiller?
Oh wow! I looked and it seems I put Charles and Hiller within one hex of Vienna, not Venice. I think I was trying to get the game set up quickly to do the video and made a mistake. Thanks for letting me know. Yes that would have changed some of the strategy in the Italian theater.
Its possible to say that Frederick Was directly responsible for the Holocaust. Frederick made Prussia a world power which in turn gave rise to German dominance on the continet which started WW1 and led to the defeat of Germany where some said the German Army was betrayed by politicians which led to WW2 and the Holocaust...
We bought it when it came out and tried to play it but couldn't. It's an engineer's dream of a game, with a huge rulebook and hundred's of counters (which don't even cover the size of the fleets involved). It's insane. We looked at the combat rules, which break things down into percentages, and immediately decided to go back to the simple fun of Federation Space.
You should use 2 solid color dice when you roll that copper dice is hard to see and read
thank you
You're welcome!
Bashki did the original.. the Hobbit and Return of the King where not Bashki's they where by Rankin n Bass. Those guys went on to Thundercats.
thank you
You're welcome
I have the set myself and mine had all infantry and no artillery. Also in mine was one set if airfix colonials and British airfix infantry.
Oh wow interesting. Was it the same set as mine? IMEX Monmouth Set?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 yes it was and I also got the 2 British riders with it. So Im guessing there are many different versions of the set.
@@kurtpillsbury4470 That's crazy there's so much variety with this set. Hopefully you were happy with what you got?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 at first I kinda scratched my head with the airfix figures but once I got everything off the sprues I was very happy. Only I wish I had was time to make those bases that set came with better.
I'm always tempted by this game, but no-one seems to say "you must buy it!". I only wargame solo FWIW.
I can definitely recommend it, but with a few caveats. It will definitely have a little bit of a "simulation" feel to it. It doesn't play like a typical wargame as in there won't be as many battles, it's about the strategic situation. You will recruit units, then train them up, then move them towards the objective. The other factions will do the same. All while keeping track of the economy and morale of the faction. Some factions need to act fast, others can be more patient. Then maneuver to try and get favorable circumstances for the main battle. Then the battle happens, whoever wins that usually wins the campaign because the losing army is completely eliminated. Then move in the objective, usually the capital and take it. Not a ton of battles but several very critical ones that decided the result. Some like that format, others want a more forgiving result for the losers in order to live to fight again for more fun. Depends on what your looking for in a game. Hope that helps 🙂
You said "War and Peace" dozens of times in the first 10 minutes. Never played it. Don't know what you're talking about when you keep referring a game I never played.
Have you ever played riddle of the ring?
No I haven't, but it's one that I would like to try someday. What about you?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 yea I own it :) there are zero videos about it on UA-cam…that’s how I ended up here actually (looking for one ) I love it but I’m sure it’s largely nostalgic and may not be the best game ever made
I found this game 100% unused at goodwill for $4.99....😮 happiest treasure I've ever found. ✨
Oh wow! That's an excellent find. Happy gaming!
That is one of those rare but lucky finds!!!!!! Good show, you!!!!!!!
The map of the original game is not distorted, you are looking at it from the wrong angle. Lay the original map at the same angle as in the land in the new map and you will understand the geography much better. (Angle from Spain in the lower left to Russia in the upper right).
I agree with you. This game is the prefect balance; is has the right level of complexity to allow or interesting strategic decisions, yet the game can still be played in an evening. Though I will point out that the game is called "Rise and Decline of the Third Reich" and not "THE Rise and Decline of the Third Reich."
It is a really good game NOW, not just "for its time."
Incredible!
Thank you!
Bought the base game many years ago. In the last 2 years i could buy all expansions and a hand full of lieutenant packs. If my wife knew how much i paid, she would kill me.
Yeah it really does add up for this game but it's definitely a lot of fun! Thanks for the comment.
great game
My favorite Civil War game for sure.
@@tabletoptemplar2486 I also enjoy the gmt remake but yeah this one is great
My favorite 2 player strategic wargame.
Nice! I'm glad you enjoy it as well.
Might have been thinking Federation Commander around 7:30. The art work back in the Task Force Games days was quite nice.
Me and my friend played this often. There was a wargame magazine ( I think Strategy and Tactics?) that had some amazing mods such as a technology tree and cool actions triggers to unlock research, including ships and ship warfare.( you do have to draw hexes in the water spaces). We also had many of our own customer rules. I do not know anyone alive who plays it anymore but I still have the binder with all the advanced rules. My favorite wargame ever.
Thank you for the comment. It is a very underrated wargame with fair simple rules but still keeps the theme for WW1.
Thank you for showing this game, I have it my collection now. I downloaded the new attrition table book. It would be nice to see you post a playthrough video. You have such a possitive view of this game you are the perfect person to post a playthrough. Thanks Again.
Thank you! I probably should do a playthrough of it.
It was a good play thru...IMO Been Spamming your Videos about the War and Peace game coming out on the Computer. I think it will be great for getting Multiplayer games going
To ALL- WAR AND PEACE is coming out on Computer--See KICKSTARTER/Steam
I saw that but it won't come out for at least a year, maybe 2 years.
@@tabletoptemplar2486 - get in now and help when Beta comes- out this next year
No need to apologize. This scenario makes dull gaming, but it's a wonderful history lesson,. Your video shows that Napoleon in 1815 was bound to lose sooner or later.
Thank you. Glad you still enjoyed it. It's definitely more of a "what if" scenario than a serious competitive game. I'll have to try a different scenario to film.
See above about this game coming out on the PC(Steam and Kickstarter)
I kinda feel they got the colors for the Prussians and French reversed.
The dark Prussian Blue color is the color of the Prussian uniforms even through the Napoleonic Wars, so it makes sense to give them that color. Blue didn't become the color for France until after the revolution. If anything, France should have been White but Austria was also white so they chose grey for them.
I just bought this for a quarter at goodwill lol
Oh wow, that's a great find!
@@tabletoptemplar2486 yeah thanks for the video I had no clue what I bought I honestly just liked the box and I’m interested in almost anything ww2. Seems like it could be a good game and I even think I have everything that it needs
@@AlanpittsS2a Is the game complete?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 it appears to be but I could be missing something I don’t know about
Ya if I remember Germany would hold in France (defend) while Germany and Austria forced Russia surrender Which took like a year or two then turned on France
That's the strategy that I use the most. I am not sure which strategy is used the most though. Have any other strategies worked for the Central Powers when you play?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 not that I remember but even after Russia surrendered it was still hard to defeat France and Britain and then of course America I don’t remember the central powers winning when I practiced it
@@gamesofwar9268 Ah I see. Which beach landings do you usually make for the Allies?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 man I can’t remember that at all
I only played it once vs other player but played solo a few times. I had all the editions like fleets, air, and tanks that made it cooler
Nice. I definitely recommend adding the navies to the game. It makes it feel more rounded as opposed to just the land battles.
Bought mine back in 1976😀
Oh wow right when it came out! Do you still play it?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 Happened to be in Canada when I bought it. Played a few times but not recently. My brother and I are regressing back to when we played Wargames so this has been resurrected. Forgot how much I loved playing it. 👍
Us card should be on back of French card
Thank you! I had forgotten that while doing the video lol
I’m enjoying your war and peace
Thank you! I enjoyed watching your videos during lockdown on your playthrough of the Grand Campaign for War and Peace.
I played this so much I wore out my copy. I have three copies now. I don't find it as complex as nuanced. I do wish there were more generals in the published version. Variants exist though.
Yeah I haven't played with the variants and I know that they added more generals but since I mostly play it solo I use the generals more "honestly" and don't hide the bad ones away from combat.
F&E is the monster game of monster games. One must have a unique love of spreadsheets.
Definitely! It's something that wouldn't appeal to everyone but for those that enjoy charts and spreadsheets its great. It's an accountant's game with a Star Trek theme.
Played this in 1983.... :) Always enjoyed.... we had the fellowship with hidden movement, Ooh how ahead of the curve were we.
Oh nice! Glad you had fun with the hidden movement.
That I don't know but I know a friend who does...I'll reply soon.
Ok thank you!
BTW advance Third Reich sux don't get it...it should be called Advanced Die Rolling because you roll 6 dice at a time.. I have the game, pass......
I do want to be able to play the Global War with Rising Sun. Would it be possible to adapt Rising Sun to the original Third Reich?
"This rule book has seen better days." That is an awesome thing not a bad thing.
That's true lol. I appreciate it.
I remember when it came out in the 80's. I was big into Starfleet Battles and wanted this game but it was quite expensive back in the day. I know it sells on Ebay now for $100 but back in the 80's that game cost $50-$75
Oh wow so it was expensive even back then?
@@tabletoptemplar2486 Im guessing the 1500 counters must have been expensive for production.
@@mtnimt4724 Ah yeah that might have contributed to the cost. It was also made by a small company that only makes Star Trek games so they probably have to charge more compared to Avalon Hill.
