My favorite strategic level Civil War game. I have had it since 1983. By the way, Victory Games was Avalon Hill. It was an offshoot brand label for them. It formed when they brought on people after the collapse of SPI. I owned or played everything VG did at one point. I still have most of it and use those games most often.
It is my favorite strategic Civil War game as well. It does a great job in providing a good simulation without getting too bogged down in details. Plus the Far West map gives players even more options even if I never really play with it.
Everyone should do the Far West at least once for the full history and flavor aspects. Usually, the amount of table space determines if we use it or not.
I played this so much I wore out my copy. I have three copies now. I don't find it as complex as nuanced. I do wish there were more generals in the published version. Variants exist though.
Yeah I haven't played with the variants and I know that they added more generals but since I mostly play it solo I use the generals more "honestly" and don't hide the bad ones away from combat.
