      That, and several others. I think the main reason for it is that the "required" specs only applied to stereo products. They never applied, under law, to home theater receivers. Multi-channel products dominate sales, so to speak. So, some of them simply faded away. Thank you for taking the time to contribute.

    I'm pretty sure I've read that any input that is of high impedence does not really need any buffering. So an amp that has 40K, 50K, 100K..etc input wont need any buffering.

      @@audibleeleganceinc Ok so I cant find the article or possibly the thread that was discussing this. It was basically a discussion that amps dont need them because of their already high impedance ... and that most amps already have the buffer built in which is why they have the high input impedance. So I turned to ChatGPT to ask if most audio power amps have input buffers as part of their design and this is what it says: Yes, most home audio power amplifiers for music playback do have an input buffer as part of their input circuitry. An input buffer serves several important functions: Impedance Matching: It helps match the impedance between the source device (like a preamplifier or a DAC) and the amplifier. This ensures that the signal is transferred efficiently without loss or degradation. Signal Isolation: It isolates the input stage of the amplifier from the source device, which can help prevent unwanted interactions and preserve signal integrity. Noise Reduction: By providing a stable and consistent signal to the amplifier, an input buffer can help reduce noise and improve overall sound quality. Protection: It can protect the amplifier from any potential harmful spikes or irregularities in the input signal. These benefits make input buffers a common and important feature in the design of high-quality home audio power amplifiers.

    My experience with the Bryston B3sst is that a lower gain preamp works well. I experimented with the 4 available gain settings and high or low gain tubes in my Musical Paradise MP701mk2 preamp. I recently added a DENAFRIPS Hestia12th for a fully balanced SS alternative preamp. It is dual buffered unity "gain",. We are slowly getting better at understanding specifications and how to apply them. Specs are important no questions, but at the end of the day, we listen with our ears. If something is off in the listening experience despite good measurements, that's when the good engineers go back and ask why. Not my words, but paraphrased from Nelson Pass.

    • @audibleeleganceinc
      @audibleeleganceinc 2 дні тому

      Ultimately, Nelson is correct and I have heard some of his products. I can recall years ago when Rotel upgraded their venerable RA-840 integrated amplifier to version 3. The English press simply ripped it apart as garbage. Not withstanding Rotel's assurances it was good, it lasted 8 months and was replaced by the version which crushed V3. Same parts, different layout. Naim audio often played around with the shape of tracings on a board right along with where the parts were located on it. Audiophile Systems, the original importer of Linn products, distributed a lovely guide called "Specifications and Other Nonsense", I copy which I still have today and make copies for some who are willing to have an open mind. It really comes down to "How does it actually sound?" and that's it.

I don't know if it matters, but it uses an Alps Blue Velvet potentiometer and so far I haven't noticed any shortcomings that you've mentioned. Keith, I often make fun of the audiophile terms because if you used them in a conversation with musicians they would likely have 2 thoughts. One, what drugs are you using and where did you get them because they want to avoid that seller, or: Two, just the opposite as they want to become as delusional as you. Mind you, those ill-defined terms, with no real reference in reality, can be somewhat useful, I suppose, but only after the musicianship has been proven by the equipment. Otherwise, you are spending a lot of money to hire a wedding reception band to be in your home. By the way, for years in the 90's the buzz term as "Midrange suckout." Still pondering that one to see if it would help me clear out toilets.

    Very informative video. As a former 16 yr. Sondek owner who bought a late 80's model used in the early 90's I agree with your observations. The table as you stated can sound very good but it's also a pain in the ass in terms of getting the best performance and to a fair degree you're dependent on access to someone with the experience, tools and skills to work on the table. Also the upgrade path can be seen as a boon or madenning 😀 As you stated much has changed having looked at the undersides of an early 80's LP12 next to a more recent Majik LP12. The early 80's table look almost agricultural in comparison underneath. Perfromance wise IMO the Majik wasn't worth the $ especially with the Pro-ject sourced arm. I've heard the top Klymaxx LP12 twice and it's impressive but around $40k now. In the $4-6 range I think they're a number of tables that outperform the Majik level Sondek.

    • @audibleeleganceinc
      @audibleeleganceinc 5 днів тому

      Thank you very kindly for an equally informative response. Having just received the Rega Naia turntable, I'm not quite sure what else a $40,000 LP12 can bring to the table, so to speak. While the Naia is not inexpensive either, I wonder with Linn and other companies if the pricing is not so much performance as it is pricing to establish the exclusive "you have arrived" marketing concept. To make matters worse, in my observations, like many "vintage" products, the prices have been sucked upwards for really no legitimate reason other than the price of new similar products has been inflated. The concept of "just like" really does not work when you consider 20 to 30 years of wear and tear along with engineering improvements. As for tables in the 4K range, I will go with your opinion on this as I have not heard a new Linn LP12 in years.

    I don’t understand how the cork mat changed the timing of the music just by the material. Did the thickness of the mat have something to do with that rather than the cork material itself? Maybe the tracking angle wasn’t aligned with that thickness? Other reviews have commented that cork tends to provide a warmer sound but this is the first time I’ve heard of a potential timing issue. I have a uturn custom TT and they recommend a 0.125” mat on the platter to optimize the angle and they actually sell a cork mat for this. I think a little more explanation in this video would have helped.

    • @audibleeleganceinc
      @audibleeleganceinc 10 днів тому

      Some might challenge that the VTA can change the sense of timing too, which, I agree with you it does. No, the thickness did not appear to be any different than the standard Rega mat. Many people do not listen for rhythm, pitch first but go to tonal emotion as their guide. Well, a great singer with a lousy band is not a great experience. So, it's hard to explain this without a bit of personal interaction. I teach this and many customers thank me for it. I have already done videos in our catalog trying to address this approach and to give some basic guidelines. So, please check them out. I sincerely can not repeat this topic again and again as I have some really critical problems going on with my wife's health. The final point being, simply listen to it and not the words written by a reviewer who claims this or that about any given product. If it works for you, and it can, great. However, do not simply assume that anything commercially promoted is not without bias or intent.

I have had experience with "matched" tubes and when I put them in they rang like all hell. Now, was the seller dishonest? Maybe, maybe not. However, I am quite familiar with the gods of conveyor belts and know quite well people are to knock blocking packages off the belt and let them drop 20 feet. My son almost took a job doing that at one of the hubs. Likewise, when parcels are shipped USPS, they all drop into big dumpsters and heavy items may come crashing down on light ones. Well, if you can not, then you should not be driving. In actuality, you can if you are paying attention to the music. You can still hear timing and phase which is essential when driving when you hear a car coming into your blind spot or falling back. That can also be pitch. So, while we both are losing frequency range, the critical areas remain fairly untouched for our survival. Nature is pretty cool. So, while we might not hear a twig being broken by a predator, we can still hear someone yelling "watch out!" That's the primary range of music. Look at the Fletcher-Munson curve and it will all make sense.

They have to pay someone to make them for them and there are different companies that do that Costs are both a combination of the complexity of the cable itself as well as the set-up costs which gets averaged out over the size of the run itself. The more unique and small batches simply cost more.

    I have two sets (bi-wire) 1986 vintage Superflex clear heavy gauge speaker cables. At some point I stopped bi-wiring, thoroughly cleaned one set of cables' stranded conductors in alcohol (95%) with a tootbrush, twisted then soldered the ends & removed soldering flux with alcohol. These cables are in use & have not turned green. The other unused untreated set were stored in the basement & have turned green (maybe humidity?). My assumption was the 'green' was mostly a surface effect & most of the copper was still OK, please advise?

    • @audibleeleganceinc

      The green is deterioration of the copper. The deterioration creates diodes and resistors. It will work, yes. Work at spec, no. I'd replace it with new. Yes, I've had Monster Cable copper wire in the clear plastic jacket that tarnished after 15 years. I assumed it was oxygen getting inside the plastic over time. I haven't heard the chlorine theory before. I also have a 50 foot spool of RCA 14 AWG speaker cable, similar appearance to Monster Cable. It was cheap, purchased on clearance from Radio Shack 15 years ago. It has never been opened, still in the plastic shrink wrap, and still has a shiny copper color, no tarnish. So I'm not sure about the chlorine theory. Even if Monster Cable (or the cheaper generic lookalike from Home Depot) does wear out after 10 years, so what? Replacing it every 10 years, would take 200 years to equal the cost of certain boutique speaker cables.
