How to Use On Camera Flash Properly
Переглядів 8 тис.19 годин тому
On-Camera Flash is a crucial tool in the photographer's skill set. On-camera flash allows the portrait photographer to control the exposure of both the background and subject independently. Knowing how to control your flash exposure and how to manipulate your on camera speedlight's quality, intensity, direction and colour will result in images not possible with natural light alone.

thank tou very much for your outstanding video's and very good explanation. I am a 67 years old amateur from the Netherlands and taking my first steps trying to make nice portrets. I learn a lot from your video's
Can you do a video on your favorite videos or tutorials, you've recorded over the years 🤔
Absolutely wonderful location, but the way you "make" the images, is what makes them really shine. Thanks for the fabulous video. Looking forward for more and Happy 2025!
Fantastic! Beautiful work and the use of light in many ways. You are a MASTER!
I admired your shots nice composition
Thanks Nelson.
After watching one of your videos I thought this is just what I need to join your shoots until I realised that you are in Newcastle Australia and I'm in Newcastle UK, I am really disappointed now.
Sorry Mike. That confuses lots of people. Thanks for the nice words.
Thanks Warren. What an opportunity to shoot in such a great location. I can’t believe they could walk in some of those shoes. 😂. Very impressive.

Very nice Warren!
Thanks mate.
This location is a dream of every people photographer. The photos are spectacular. My favorite is 5:08min.
I'm glad you liked it Andreas.
Beautiful pictures . I liked the mood and composition of the images taken at time stamp 9.46. You are quite an inspiration to me. Thanks.
Yes, this picture is very nice.
Thank you so much 😀
Saturday mornings with Warren 💪🏿📸
Morning Paige.
Enjoyed your video. thank you. Question. first 10mins: seems you like 1/50, why is this your preference? . cant it be higher like 1/80-1/100 with higher iso? less model fatigue?
Yes, you are correct. Sometimes we have too much to think about on a shoot such as this. We don't always get things exactly right.
The photos with gels are so beautiful
Thank you.
I just found your channel and I am thoroughly enjoying your teaching and skills. I particularly like the video about the "flash drag" ... Very cool mate! In this great video what is our camera/lens combo w/Maxine?
Awesome, thank you Rich. I shot these images with my Nikon D5600 and kit lens.
The Stofen - or the "cone," as you call it - doesn't soften the light but it does reduce specularity a little. And some photographers use them outdoors for that reason alone, not because they have delusions of softness. I've seen really great results from that. Of course, it still isn't a soft light but it's a "smoother" looking hard light, if that makes sense. Great vid.
Thanks for your comment Jason. I don't call the tool a "Stofen" because that is a brand name. There are other identical devices from other brands. Mine is not made by stofen. We will have to agree to disagree on the specularity issue. My experiments don't show any differences with specular highlights except on indoor shots where the scattered light has reflected off surfaces and resulted in some "fill". Thanks for taking the time to reach out.
@ No worries. Disagreements are part of life lol.
Thanks so much for this interesting video! I have not done any flash work as yet, but I will be soon. I can see how it will improve my shots a lot when doing model shoots. Thanks again.
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic very interesting video! I take pictures at events, in manual it's hard to work because when I move the light changes all the time...! In fact in that situation I use TTL. Do you have any advice? Thanks a lot
High Robert. When shooting events and similar situations I use manual flash. Once I have established my flash power for the first shot, I simply stay the same distance from my subject for all subsequent shots. This way my flash exposure will be identical for all shots. I use a zoom lens so I can change my crop for each image but my flash exposure remains constant as long as my distance from my subject stays relatively the same. I find that TTL gives me different exposures depending on the tones of the subjects clothing and their skin colour.
@ thanks a lot!!!
Lovely and Educative. What are the model of your gear used e.g Camera and Flash
Hi Saheed. Most of these images were shot on my Nikon D5600 with kit lens and Yong Nuo (YN560 IV) flash.
@newcastlephotographycollege thanks boss.
Like your video, are u located in Newcastle Ca?
Hi Gregory. I am in Newcastle Australia.
For me I use an on camera for events and wedding non portraits The TTL on the profoto is amazing I almost never misses A little pricey
That's great Karl. Thanks for your comment.
Another great video from you how to use simple tools efectively. I almost lost myself in all those f.cking lights, softboxes...😁. Sometimes simplicity can offers more creativity and pleasure at work. Thanks man and stay well.
Thanks mate. Yes, keeping it simple is often the best idea.
I guess I missed it but why are you shooting down on your model so much around 10 minutes into the video?
Hi Dylan. I find that, when the model is seated or on the floor, you have the choice of viewpoint. You can either get down to eye level or shoot slightly down on them because the downward angle won't distort her legs very much. I can also zoom in for a head and shoulders shot which is usually better shot from slightly above. Also I tend to be a bit lazy and getting down low is painfull for my Knees.
Excellent coverage of thee subject and techniques.
Thank you.
My question is: Is it possible to use the additional flash? Because I see that you are using a "more powerful, larger and heavier" one. Please explain to me. Greetings from Ecuador!
In the low light before dawn, a smaller speedlight flash would be adequate but after the sun rises, the background sky is very bright so a more powerful flash is needed to expose the sky properly. Thanks for your question Leo.
Best video I have ever seen in 15years,Thanks many. Please write the settings you have used.
Thank you for that. It makes me very happy. The camera and flash settings vary immensely for each situation so there is very little benefit in me listing them all. Just follow those two basic flash laws: "Keep your shutter speed below 1/200th sec" and "expose your camera for the background and set your flash exposure for your subject".
Great information and examples as usual. I have a small space that's great for this type of practice. What focal length/s were you using?
I generally use my kit zoom lens mostly at 70mm but also at other zoom settings as well.
@newcastlephotographycollege Thanks for responding. I really do look forward to your uncomplicated and knowledge filled segments. Best of 2025 to you from Barbados!
À very complète video with examples that clearly show the differences. A very, very nice vidéo. Thank you very much for the time you spent to do it. 😊 Waiting always the next one 💋
Thanks for your feedback Tiffany.
Very nice video on classical flash use. Things change, once you use flash with a global shutter as found on the SONY A9III. The principals still remain, but there is much more freedom, using flash with a GS.
You may be right Rene. I don't have a global shutter. Although the benefits may be less than the manufacturers suggest. Using faster shutter speeds can limit the flash power by cutting off some of the flash duration curve. It's a step forward though.
@newcastlephotographycollege The real benefit of using a GS is, that exposure can now be controlled by the shutter speed. The problem with current flashes is the missing communication between the fash and the camera to position the time slice of the shutter at the optimum of the flash curve. The A9III allows you to adjust the timing manually for a particular flash and energy level, which is a bit of a hassle. The only flash I know, is the SONY fash that can do this automatcally at any energy level, as it comunicates directly with the camera.
Would be nice to show your camera settings on each photo
The flash settings are pretty much constant for this shoot. Flash on 1/4 power, ISO 200, F8 @1/125th sec. For outdoor shoots the camera and flash settings vary immensely for each situation so there is very little benefit in me listing them all. Just follow those two basic flash laws: "Keep your shutter speed below 1/200th sec" and "expose your camera for the background and set your flash exposure for your subject".
Would be a good idea to say what your camera (iso, ss & aperture) & flash (power etc) settings are for each photo to give people an idea of where to start in similar situations.

Very good video! It is good to see someone who knows what their doing do a video! You may consider doing a video about your busisness / studio. Thanks!
Thanks Ron. Many more videos to come.
excellent, I always learn from you teacher, greetings
Glad to hear that Carlos!
Personally I think you are using a to powerful flash, many of your pictures have a "fake" feeling, because subjects are lid from a totally different angle than the rest of the picture.
To lid.
You may be right Kenneth. We all have our personal preferences but I would be the first to admit that I don't always get it spot on.
If you were teaching any subject to someone would you get everything you demonstrated perfect every time, or indeed want to, somehow methinks not.
As was discussed in this excellent video, the direction, quality, and intensity of the light can be adjusted to suit a number of photographic styles. If the light is too intense, the power setting on the flash unit can be reduced. If the light is too diffuse, a narrow cone can be attached to the flash head to restrict light spread, especially when bouncing the light, for a more dramatic effect and for a greater demarcation between light and shadow on the subject.
@chesslover8829 it's no good trying to explain to these wannabees, they're just too thick to understand.
Thank you for another great useful video class.
My pleasure Jaimes!
Nice work and content :), the only problem with on camera flash would be that it is almost impossible to create some sort of drama or make a subject pop (except very large dark room :D ) because the light always spills around from huge surface without controll. Good for standard photos, but If you need to be competitive and make your pics stand out among others the off camera flash is a must I think :) Just my opinion ;)
That is right Veronique. On-camera flash is just one option we have. It requires less gear but the results can be a bit flat.
That's if you're competing with other photographers out there. I do what I do and don't really care about the "competition." The only person I compete with is myself. Competing takes the fun out of photography. For me anyhow.
Great and useful content. Thank´s Warren!
Glad it was helpful Miguel.
Great video as always would have liked to see a outdoor shoot using direct flash 👍
Outdoor on-camera flash video coming soon.
Really useful combination of theory and practical demonstration - thank you for this
You're very welcome Chris.
Another Saturday morning with Warren
Hi Paige.
Two Comments: (1) After neglecting on-camera flash for years, I got crazy when my light stand for off-camera flash gets blown over again and again and re-considered on-camera flash. However, I do almost exclusively portraits in portrait orientation and I disliked the shadow not being below the face but on the side (see your photo at 36:15min). Then I found a bracket that can be rotated and allows the flash to shoot from above the camera in both portrait and landscape orientation. I still like off-camera flash better, but using this bracket I have a good alternative if off-camera flash cannot be used (too windy, too crowded, etc.). (2) I was very surprised that the influence of blocking the light with the photographer's body when bouncing the flash on back wall is this pronounced. Experiences like this make your videos so valuable.
Name and pic of bracket, please.

Those brackets can be very useful to hide the shadow from a close background. I've considered getting one myself. Thanks for your comment Andreas.
Great content Warren!
Thanks mate.

Yes, I remember too.
Great shots. Would it be better to have the soft box closer to subjects for softer lighting?
Yes it would give softer light but that was not a huge consideration with this shoot.
Great video. Thank you.
No worries Fred. Thanks.
Really enjoyed your photos this time. I often find that a flash used outdoors can ruin photos because you use too much. This time I thought the flash was well balanced. Thank you for being an inspiration.
You are right. Balancing the flash with ambient is tricky and we all have our preferences.
