I Like Big Pens
I don’t have a Namiki Emperor but maybe one day. For now, this is for my Leonardo Momento Zero Grande.
Ink and Pen Box
A budget friendly modular pen and ink bottle or other stationeries storage from Galen Leather that reminds me of those beautiful ones made by Toyooka Craft.
Except this is about less than half the price. BUT. If I’d rate Toyooka 10/10, Galen’s is 7/10 with the “glass” top, and without, one with a wooden lid, maybe 8/10 because I am assuming without the “glass” and having only wood to wood joineries the quality would be better.
Please note that I don’t have one of those, so I am simply estimating my hypothetical higher rating of one of the ones with the wooden lid based on the photos Galen has on their website.
Undyed Two Pen Flap Pen Case
The pen flap case for two pens is made of undyed leather and still a bit stiff so I’ll get back to you on how it goes.
Galen’s flap pen cases have been some of my favourites in terms of design, quality, and price points, so I don’t see how my opinion of this one would be any different.
UPDATE: I left the wooden stretcher stick inside the undyed leather pen case to stretch it and the wood which I just realized must have been oiled, has left a bit of a stain on the leather. You should take things like this as part of the patina process. It is hard to keep undyed leather pristine and I don’t think you are meant to.
Namiki Emperor Single Pen Flap Case
The single pen flap case was made specifically for a Namiki Emperor fountain pen. Or a similarly large pen.
It feels good in the hand, appears to be well cut, with good quality stitching and leather. So far I am very happy with it because this is the only one that my Leonardo momento zero can fit into comfortably, and so it serves exactly its purpose.

I am not affiliated with Galen Leather, or any of its associates, in any way.

WRITING SAMPLE. "Nuda" Leonardo MZG x Pen Venture Demonstrator Fountain Pen (2022). Stub 1.5 14K
My Grandfather had Burger’s Disease. He had to have his legs amputated from just below the knee. He lived in a trailer because he walked on his knees at home. He wore wooden legs to go to work. But that was decades ago and I’m sure they have better ways to treat it. It’s possible that he wasn’t diagnosed properly back then. Whatever he had affected the circulation in his lower legs. I do wish you could find help.
I would have thought Plotter would have packed that more carefully. Jet Pens packs their items meticulously.
@@janiekcarney5482 I bought this from Yoseka in NYC and it was packed OK I guess.
Thorough video.
Undated planners can stop the problem of blank pages. You can start an undated planner with the understanding that that journal will last longer than one year. Less waste and less stress. Don’t use sticker dates. Just write the date. You are writing the entry. No need to put yourself through putting tiny stickers. Why??
@@janiekcarney5482 Planning is different from journaling for me. Planning is FUTURE ORIENTED. Journalling is PAST oriented. So for planning I need dated pages. But you are right about journaling. That’s why I am changing things around for 2025 😊
That’s a great philosophy of using a five year journal.
@@janiekcarney5482 I failed though. I’ll talk about it maybe later 😅

@@FuckTheWoke99 It’s awhile back I can’t remember but I remember it being part of comic con. So this was a merch for that event!
How do you use each of your plotters?
@@quinn.leftyplans I will come back and explain 😄
for the large pen fitting in the large case, you can always go the route of rolling it in a cloth (like the type used for eyeglasses) then it will not shake about so much and will be easier to slip in and out :D very lovely cases you received.
@@rinl.6924 Yes I thought about that especially since I do wear glasses and in need of such a cloth regularly. But that’s very fiddly isn’t it 😅 Thanks for the suggestion! I will try it!
I love Galen Leather, I have many pieces of theirs. I'm currently looking for a nice wall cabinet for all my ink bottles. I love their leather pen holders and the fact that they make one just for Kaweco pens is awesome. The leather wears well and has such a beautiful patina with age.
@@TraciFix I no longer use Kaweco but I just check that out if only just out of curiosity. Let me know if you ever find that wall cabinet for the inks!
Those look like good quality leather. Don't be afraid to condition them a few times (outside only) before use.
@@danc7904 Yes indeed. Luckily I did buy their leather balm.
The box that you just received and opened I would have sent back immediately if for no other reason than the condition. The torn corner on the outer box is done intentionally and usually indicates the item has been sold, I personally detest that. When you pay for a new item it should be in new condition without any glue or debris on the acrylic lid or anything that obviously shows that the item is not in pristine new condition. Sorry, I don't know enough about the situation but if this was from Amazon they are usually quite good about helping resolve an issue. Enjoyed your video, Thank you.
@@1remjr For the prices? I don’t mind. If I am paying $400 for each I would have protested. I am a big believer of small and family businesses like Galen, especially in countries outside the US. These guys have to make money. Amazon is a giant US corporation who has been known to treat their workers badly and have ruined a whole town in the US. Amazon doesn’t need my support, and most of their products are not up to my standard anyway. Except for factory made items such as electronics, or books, which I have stopped buying from Amazon and have been buying from local New Zealand or Australian companies and distributors instead. Some are tied to the US in some ways, but that is another story. Return shipping is also expensive from NZ.
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf Yes I agree with you, but many of the sellers are small businesses that only use Amazon as a platform for better circulation. I recently bought a lamp from such a seller. You can see which ones are independent by clicking on the name of the seller. Also if you do need to return an item many of the vendors have free return shipping with prime. You are obviously a very wise lady. Thank you for the information.
@@1remjr Yes I know about those smaller sellers all over the world who have to operate on platforms provided by giant US corporations like eBay and Amazon ☺️ Being in NZ, the benefits in terms of things like returns are limited since we aren’t their main client base. With eBay it has to go through a dispute process which can be time consuming and mentally taxing. Thank you for dropping by with watching and commenting! It helps the video a lot! 🫶
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelfMy pleasure.
So they still do give gifts. I wonder what the minimum order is--=or maybe one has to have a set number of orders. I spent 483 USD with them a month ago maybe and received nothing extra.
@@petekutheis3822 Just Turkish postcards, tea, and Turkish wet towels. I only received the pen sleeves recently after about four purchases in the last month totaling almost $1000. I have also been buying from them a lot since 2020. Maybe that is a variable?
Pretty! Very nice storage solution. Really like that drawer storage. The colour and the smoothness of the drawers...exquisite! Shed skin cells create dust so having it all over everything is inevitable. Hey, Ladybird is in the background talking. So cute! Tell her I said hello! ❤
@@psychedianic Are you talking about the Toyooka Craft’s pen box? Yes. I still prefer that. This one is more budget friendly, and a tad less sophisticated. But good enough and I am not too scared to damage it 😃 Yes, she is so chatty and a bit attached to me in a way I didn’t expect cats to do. But there are just us two in the house so I guess it makes sense. She always follows me upstairs and doesn’t like to be left alone downstairs 😅
How did you order it from japan?
@@erbtui I looked for sellers on eBay and Etsy 😄
Very nice storage from Galen. I also like big pens. Thank you for this video.
Thank you so much for dropping by as always ❤
Also, the “line” on the front of the sojourner is a natural mark from the animals skin. That is not a defect
@@MM-pj4bl I know. Animal skin is an organic product. What I am saying is, higher quality tanneries won’t have that part of the skin for sale. Better quality producers like The Superior Labor and Ateliers Phileas will pay more for skins which will EXCLUDE these parts of the animal. You can get those for 40% more money and my recommendation would be to pay more for those. And not waste your money on this.
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf some makers put those blemishes on their products intentionally. I make leather planners and I love those marks. The look of my covers is very “rustic” “old used saddle” kinda look lol. So, when I shop for hides, I actually seek out those with branding marks, scars, stretch marks etc. I think it’s beautiful. Go figure haha
The fuzzy side, it is unfinished. The one you like more, it has been finished and burnished. You can take tokonole and a glass burnisher and finish it yourself
@@MM-pj4bl I paid several hundred dollars not to have to do anything myself 😂 Thus, my original conclusion: UNLESS YOU ARE IN THE US, this isn’t worth the costs (after shipping and currency conversion).

What do you make of the new penguin Malcom c Lyons translation. I want to read it but when i compare it to older translations that you can reference on Gutenberg project i feel woried that he casually removes sentences that are quite important but then what if it is the older translation that embellished.
@@rlawrence9838 I have the special edition of that translation which came out years ago and bought it after they went out of print only because it was bound and designed nicely. I haven’t checked any recent ones. Which year? Personally, for now, my good standard is Haddawy’s. Mine the Everyman’s Library but it seems Random House owns everything now. I know Penguin published his translation too. Have you read one of those? Thoughts? I really regret selling these by Folio Society. Again only because it is such a pretty set!!

I bought the same cat Weeks! And that Hon fabric is adorable. 🥰
Also, I loved One Piece the series on Netflix (not the manga version) and I am eagerly awaiting Season 2!
@@pennycandyys I have yet to check out One Piece, I heard good things!
I used a Weeks for last year and this year to track my symptoms of whatever it is I’ve got that’s basically stolen my life away. I love the Hon though and keep wondering if it would be a better format since I often end up writing across both pages and then into the graph paper at the back. It’s convenient in many ways, except that sometimes I’m writing laying down. As well, this year I ended up ordering the Kanahei Weeks from Japan, and I’m not sure I want to use it for symptoms, or if I want to get a different, sort of more serious one for my symptoms. And this year there’s sooo many things I like, I’m really struggling to make up my mind. 😬 It really sucks to have health issues, prior to my injury I was always healthy, so it’s hard to watch that slip away.
@@pennycandyys I sympathise with your feelings about health. Unlike you I was not a healthy child but sort of bloomed in my 20s and 30s. Now I am back the way I was in my childhood and teenage years. Maybe it is the hormones! Who knows. The Hon Weeks is the same on the inside as the standard Weeks isn’t it? I don’t know what Kanahei is, I will google 😁
Love your haul 😊

Ooh Moomins, I remember them, oh the memories!
@@dawnyWestScotland I sort of regretted buying Moomin this year. They are cute. But too expensive and the glossy cover gets boring really quick. Unlike some though I am not familiar with the story of Moomin. I just love the aesthetics.
Such cute covers! How is sweet Ladybird? I wish the hobonichi covers were more durable from a stain resistant perspective. Glued notebooks with individual signatures (not signatures sewn together to create a text block) tend to break at the spine after much use, causing the individual signatures to detach from the glued spine - at least in my experience. I've not had this particular brand of notebook so let us know how it goes. Great walkthrough!
@@psychedianic This is why I am very disappointed at these Hobonichi notebooks. If your recall how some people’s 5 year techo broke apart at the spine cover glueing and revealing the actual stitch binding, now THAT is the type of binding I expected. Having said that I think I remember somewhere saying that their notebooks aren’t made to the same standard. I suspect different people are manufacturing these books and techo. Now I want to check all my standard Hobonichi techo and compare them. I know the English A6 is solid I can feel it around the spine.
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf Yes, I'd be disappointed too! When a brand such as Hobonichi has established a reputation for high quality (Zojirushi comes to mind as well), one expects that excellence all the time. To see it miss the mark is disheartening.
@@psychedianicThis is only true for their plain notebooks though. And the signatures are each stitched but then bound together with glue. Instead of stitched again. Also notice how the notebooks are sold under accessories. I am checking all the techo including the say free and avec and it seems that those are made to the usual high standard. At least the standard that I was introduced to by Hobonichi in 2019 😊
I’m going to put a 2nd order in now for that gorgeous green weeks! 😸💙

@@penthevision4706 Yes. I would stick to the Seven Seas range personally myself. The changes in Tomoe River Paper now produced by Sazen is disheartening though.

@@psychedianic I have been procrastinating emailing them asking about it 😭 Yes I will let you all know 😁
The Galen marbling IS PRINTED so not real 😢
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf Ah! Thanks for letting us know. There's no substitute for genuine marbling. The process of marbling paper is fascinating to watch.
Hi Anneke, I think I’ve heard you mention a change in Tomoe river paper now several times. Did you do a deep dive on the subject in one of your videos? Which one? Or shall I consider it a hunting expedition on your channel?….there is something to be said for efficiency in writing. But I will always side with the verbose of the world….love your green sweater by the way.
@@kellylyons7611 Sadly no, I didn’t do any deep dive into Tomoe River Paper. But it will take you only a few seconds of Google ing though. You’ll find enough info about it all over the internet. It sent shockwaves throughout the fountain pen community when it was announced that the factory was closing soon after the pandemic due to increasing costs of paper pulps. As you can imagine 😅 Sanzen took over and we’ve all been surviving on old supplies ever since. Until now I guess. Writing on my Hobonichi 2024 with my fountain pen feels like trying to do water colouring on a duck’s back 💀 I am hoping that might just be the titanium nib. But I doubt it ☹️ That green sweater looks pretty grubby if you see me in it especially after the changes in my body shape in the last couple of years and there is no rescuing that one 😂
@@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf ack, Anneke, I've bought several notebooks and notebook covers. now I need a pen. I have never had a fountain pen, let alone used one. but I'm NOT going to buy several. I will allow myself 1, maybe 2. I was looking at the ulpia 117 with ebonite on galen's website. is this absolutely ridiculous as my first pen? like I said, I don't want to become a pen collector. I just want a really nice 1 or 2. I like the idea of a niche house with an old material. somehow a plastic-based pen seems wrong, but that's my silliness. do you have any advice?
@@kellylyons7611 Fountain pens are so personal. I love Japanese ones specifically Sailor and Platinum but some don’t like the pencil like feedback they both give, while I do. Honestly just grab something that you like the look of and which cost you the least shipping when or if bought from the same seller as your other items. It has to be a trial and error process sadly. So if you have to start somewhere you might as well start with whatever drew you in. Buying trying selling giving away buying others to try again until you get what you like. That’s the only way 🧐
