THANK YOU
My pleasure :)
Simple, to the point, and exactly what I needed, Thank you, still useful 3 years later!
Time flies!
Use cases :) : what about to make a hole :)
Thank you so much, I've been looking to solve this problem for sooooooo long. You solve it and made my life easier, God bless you.
I have no idea why it isn't set like this by default! Glad you found this useful though and thanks for the feedback.
this video changed my life :D
Perhaps more extreme than I would have expected but I am glad you found it useful :)
Great video! I was able to follow it very well! However, after applying the texture and opening it in my silcer, the print has scaled enormously in size! How do I retain the original scaling?
Extremely insightful. I can't seem to get Loop Cut to split objects in half and apart at all, but this plus the snap fit is really helpful
Loop cuts don't split objects but only add more vertices in a line around your model. Even then, they stop where there are triangles in the way. There is a bi-sect tool that can split objects in two but I rarely use it myself. I find this boolean method is easier to get right.
@@notverygoodguy Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying :)
ive modeled for a bit but rigging is a whole different beast...........thanks for the tutorial
Glad it was useful. There are many more comprehensive rigging tutorials out there but for posing models rather than animating, it isn't too complex.
Hi NVGG, my grid won't bend on the curve, do you perhaps have an idea why?
If it does nothing at all then I would guess you haven't selected the curve as a target from the curve modifier. other possibilities could be that you need to apply scale to the grid or the curve though I doubt that. Does it do anything?
@@notverygoodguy Thank you very much for your reply, Curve is selected and my grid and photo are the same size, so scaling is not required to fit on grid. I'll keep bashing on it.
@@trentoncarr If you have altered the scale of either model in object mode and not applied the scale then modifiers may not work as expected. If you have a link to the blend file I could take a look at it if you wish.
Great and unexpected cube explosion! The last thing I expected to see in such a video. Thank you ))
Glad you like it. It's becoming a bit of a theme in my videos but they can take quite a long time to make. This one was simple though :)
why? simply export both to one obj file....import into slicer, right click, split to objects, done
Doing it as an obj file actually does keep the origins intact. Thanks. I still think the method in this video is going to work regardless of where your origins are but exporting as an obj certainly seems to work for this model. If I ever update this video (which is unlikely given few people are interested in it) I'll mention this.
Hi , thankyou very much for this tutorial , but after doing the boolean the plane is sticked to my model , so how do i fix this?ive followed everything uve showed in the tutorial.
My guess would be that you have selected the plane and the model in the wrong order. Select the model first and then the plane and make sure the modifier is set to "Difference"
@@notverygoodguy It worked , tysmm!!

How would you approach creating a perfectly smooth low poly sphere without pinching at the poles ? What is the Industry standard for approaching this ?
A perfectly smooth low poly sphere would depend entirely on your smoothing algorithm. I mostly use Blender for 3d printing so shade flat is the order of the day. That said, if I wanted to do this I would likely use an ico sphere instead of a sphere.
@ thank you for replying!
how do you zoom in blender? I brought in my object and it's tiny and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to zoom to it. I cannot see my object at all. Is there not a fit to object view option or something??? I'm used to Lightwave and just trying to use blender to add a texture to a 3d model and cannot even see my object :(
If you have a numeric keypad then just select the object in the outliner and press the keypad comma button. However often people think an object has imported really small but in fact it has just imported off screen. In this case object->Set Origin->Geometry to origin will work. In the unusual cae that the object has not imported with the origin in the center then first do object->Set Origin->origin to 3d cursor
Hello, very helpful video! May I ask what the final size of the stl file was in terms of megabytes? I have a problem where if I want to have a smooth surfaced model, my stl files turn out around 200 mb for a figure of comparable size. Thank you!
I just exported this to stl just to check and it comes out at 117MB. Until slicers add subdvisions into their calculations then the only way to get smooth surfaces on organic models is to have LOTS of geometry. You can make sure to reduce it where you don't need it e.g. the belt on this model is a separate object with very few vertices as is the belt bag she is wearing. If you need to keep tabs on how many triangles you have you can turn on statistics in the viewport overlay drop down menu. This model has 2.5 million triangles :/
@@notverygoodguy Thank you very much! That helps a lot.

so the errors below the dress in 6:15, you chose to not close the dress at that point...but what did instead? I'm thinking something similar as with the boots, still close but a little further from the edge, right? In situations like this, the dress and the boots are hollow, and you make a wall at the end...still will be hollow at the slicer? I worried with the gap between the clothes and the body in these cases
Good spot, it isn't too clear is it. Actually, the issue with the dress error of it being a big hole underneath is created because of the the mask modifier I used to stop her body poking through her clothes. This is a reasonable option and I show how to close this if you want to go that way but I choose to fix the poking through the clothes problem with sculpting instead of the mask modifier. Removing the mask modifier removes the issue of her being hollow under the dress. Later use of the solidify modifier allows everything to be printable though adds to the supports needed in the slicer. Hope this clarifies it a bit.
This would be a hell of a lot easier if blender didn't freeze every single step of the way,
For most people it doesn't. Do you have a load of subdivisions or really high vertex count on your model some other way?
My model seems to disappear, the STL file is hollow, i followed as best I could being a beginner, but frustrated that the model simply disappears when I press H, is there something i am doing wrong?
This can happen if the hollow of the model intersects with the outside. If you can provide a link to your blend file I'll take a look.
Can I ask? why you don't select a single vert from -Add-Mesh-single vert? I also don't understand why so many video makers delete the original default cube you get when opening Blender, is there a difference between the default cube and a new mesh cube from the Add menu? Bob
You certainly can ask. Older versions of Blender didn't have the single vert option and so just merging all at center works for everyone. People delete the default cube simply because usually they want to start with something else. They get so used to it that they delete it even if they actually do want to start with a cube. Also it is easier to delete the camera and lights if you just select everything and delete it at the start. That said you can set the default scene to anything you like in the preferences.
Mister NotVeryGood lol he said with tongue in cheek I've watched a few of your videos now, so refreshing to watch and actually learn. Your editing is great, zoom in here to show X, zoom here to show X, perfect, also the pace at which you show how is spot on. I think you have just taken 'Most watchable UA-cam Blender Boss' title. After watching so many other clever bottoms on here and finding they are wizzards at using the program but sadly not so hot on actually teaching/giving instruction you are a blessing and refreshing change. Like others I must thank you for doing and sharing. Don't change your ways but lots more content please BossMan. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I keep forgetting how to do things too :)
is there a way to assemble a stl that is cut in multiple parts? most of stls are already in the right position when you import the parts to blender, but sometimes I got across one that each part is rotated and spread, I looking for some way to allign the parts back in position, snapping the pin areas or something similar?
A lot depends on luck. If the parts are all aligned you can simply select all the parts and join them with CTRL J. This will likely leave you with internal walls but your slicer might cope with that if you are 3d printing but if you are texturing or animating you will probably run into trouble. If the parts are not aligned you almost certainly won't have a magic button to align them and will just have to move the parts into position yourself. Turning snapping on will help but not a lot.
@@notverygoodguy oh thank you, actually this wouldn't be to print all together, no reason to join or worry with internal walls. I just like to assemble sometimes to have the full size of figure when the artist doesn't show this info, or to create or enlarge connect pins for these parts and things like that. But later I would still print those parts separated. Thank you for the reply!

If my model goes invisible does that mean that it was already solid?
It could be that or it could be that the inside walls intersect with the outside walls. That's fixable but you have to find where vertices intersect and separate them
@ I think the issue is that it doesn’t encase any empty space it’s basically two separate pieces that don’t have any walls but the pieces don’t have volume so it’s not a solid
@@starchaserstudios3752 Remember that a manifold model that only has outside walls is in fact, a solid model. At least it is from a 3d printing perspective.

Спасибо братан, хорошой урок.
Thanks, can I invert the selection, or can I isolate part of my model with ALT+B then invert it to show the other part?
Sadly not that I am aware of. It's quite basic.
@@notverygoodguy alright thanks for replying.
I followed the steps but the model just turned into a shell of itself.
The most common reason for a problem here is either incorrect normals somewhere in the mode or the model isn't correctly hollowed. If any part of the hollow intersects with the outside of the model then this won't work. If this is the case you do have the option of selecting all the vertices of the outside manually. That said, can you explain at one point you have the problem and what do you mean by "a shell of itself"
Why can't all tutorial videos be like this?
I wish I could make all of them this short. Makes editing much easier :)
My computer locks up when I try to add the modifier subdivision surface :-(
The modifier can take ages if you already have a lot of vertices and an older computer without enough RAM and in extreme cases can crash.

Hi - great video. I'm trying to fill a void in a model and followed all the steps however the interior walls are reading as exterior so when I hide the external vertices it hides the ones inside too - any ideas on why this may be happening?
Sounds like it is a model with a hole in it rather than a hollow model which might sound like its the same thing but actually isn't. It also sounds like the hole intersects with the outside walls which is why the inside gets selected with the outside. One thing you could try if you are patient is to go into edit mode and try to select everything you see with the circle select brush (press c and adjust the size of the circle with the mouse wheel) select as much as you can and then hide it with h (you might need to right click to come out of circle select first). If there is still more outside that needs selecting repeat the process until you are left with just the inside hole of the model. Finally do ALT-H to get the hidden parts back. They should still be all selected so go ctrl i to invert the selection. This should now select everything except the parts you selected before i.e. the inside and delete these vertices with x, vertices. Take a copy of your model first of course. Hope this works!
@@notverygoodguy It's a hollow model with drainage holes in. I've filled the drainage holes in with cylinders in 3D builder but it still doesn't seem to be recognising any of the internal topography.
@@kingfluff8065 Hmm in this case does it even matter that it has holes in it? It will likely print anyway. That said, it sounds like your only other option is to select all the vertices on the outside of your model and separate them from the rest of the model and I described above. This might require a lot of patience though. If you have a link to the model I would be interested to take a look at it.
