Putting 305 HO heads on a 350 Chevy small block Part 1: tear down and measuring
The 350 in my 1975 Chevy El Camino runs great, but it’s got bad valve seals, and since I have a fresh set of 305 HO cylinder heads I am going to throw them on and see if we can make more power on the cheap. I mean, it’s only got 165 hp now, so it’s gotta get better, right???

I bought an old 1960s electric industrial vehicle. It’s called a chariot, and there’s basically nothing wrong with it. It has been sitting for over 20 years and now it’s back in working order.

@@firestang70 uh, excuse me, the two whut?
Reuse for sure! You could put 14 bolts per cylinder on a Sbc and it will still blow a head gasket. 😁
@@OlysGarage it’s been known to happen
@@Foxcanfixit 🤣🤣🤣
Preheat, braze, post heat. Easy. Will last forever.
@@HRResto so Oxy acetylene torch is the way to go?
I subbed back when you were working on the ranger. Grown quite a bit since then. Congrats. Keep the information and entertainment flowing brother. I still dig the videos.
Thanks man, I try to still get a video out weekly, but sometimes I just have to do 3-4 shorts instead. Things coming up are: putting the el Camino engine back together, installing the hitch and wiring, ww2 shark mouth mural on the scooter, and a hood release cable on the corvette. Thanks for subbing and sticking with it. Email your address to foxcanfixit@gmail and I’ll send you some channel stickers
Summer time in the desert or winter time in the mountains, both heat cross overs blocked or open, 160° thermostat or 195 it doesn't matter because that iron intake manifold will boil the fuel in any quadrajet any day. A half inch carburetor spacer has always helped greatly.
@@shootermcgavin2819 the stock thick paper spacer is ok but I agree that a 1/2 to 1” phenolic resin spacer does wonders for fuel boil issues. Here in Ohio the biggest benefits to be had are on stock platforms the restrictors tend to help with initial heating in winter without causing a heat soak hot start issue
Soooooooooooooooo How's that work when the block is one year, the heads are another year, the intake is aftermarket, and the car isn't even a Chevrolet??
@@OlysGarage depends on your intentions. For this one the 305 and 350 heads both have the central exhaust passage and the intake manifold has it, so I am running it as if it’s all stock 1975 el camino. If I swapped the manifold or did more performance upgrades I would probably block the whole passage and then have to swap to an electric choke.
@@Foxcanfixit good answer! I was just trying to screw with you! LOL Great job!!!
@@OlysGarage I know, but I gotta keep on my toes with your questions 😀
@@Foxcanfixit 🤣🤣🤣
I can't ever remember putting those things in and I've never had a problem
@@thesagemonkeymechanic7969 that’s good. I’m about 50/50 on running issues leaving them out when they are called for
Whoops....
@@TheFoxygrandpa69 I cannot even count the number of times I have either left them out or used the wrong gasket that blocked it off all together. I’m trying to do it right for once 😂😀
Double restrict it
@@NathansMoparGarage thermal choke, gotta keep it to just 1
It will still get hot
Why didn't he put one edge against the edge of the metal? So one less cut
@@Supremedude71 I had already made 1 with the flat edge on the edge of my piece, I didn’t actually cut out the one I traced in red paint. I just didn’t think to film until I cut the 1st one out 🤷♂️. But you are 100 correct, don’t waste material if you can help it
It can be done but if that part is available that would toue best buy
@@jayusher576 agreed. The passenger side is A-fine, and B-stuck, so I am just ordering a stock replacement for this cracked drivers side manifold. I’ll keep this one to practice on
It can be done by gas welding with mild steal rods you must heat the cast red hot to get a proper bite in it
@@alfredritcher thanks! I’m going to keep this manifold around so I can practice on it
6011, JB weld
Sandblast the are clean. Use a guiging rod to open the crack. Preheat it until red hot. Use minimal amperage, and weld in short sections about 10 times the electrode diameter. Welds should be staggered. Let it cool in a heat blanket over several hours. That should do it.
@@2engjnr2 good info thanks 😀👍
Came along for the ride
Great detective work
@@doctorlefthandthread thank you Doctor
Get the weld spot red hot with the acetylene torch, worked a couple of times for me
There are cast rods they work you just have to take your time and allow cooling between welds
Brazing rod is best if you don't have proper rod for cast iron
You have to remove the weld you just added and have someone help you with a hot cutting torch only heating it up to red hot and weld it again and let air cool down then clean up your weld for a cleaner look .
Higher nickel rod and a oxy torch
Doesn't one need to make a cast iron part almost red hot before welding?
@@robertdeen8741 hotter than what I could get it with a benzo torch apparently
Just make sure they’re super clean and oil the threads when reinstalling go ten pounds heavier than the torque specs call for it will be fine
I like how the comment section is mostly people agreeing with you, but with the tone that suggests they know everything and you don't know anything. 😂
@@LoFox I appreciate any advice whether it makes me look dumb (which I am a lot) or not
It’s probably going to take oxygen/acet to get it hot enough. Then it needs to be slowly cooled. They have special welding rods for stick welding cast. I remember the first time I saw it done.
@@RealWorldGarage yeah it’s weird stuff, seems like the welder amperage needs to be low but the cast iron needs to be hot
Put it in hot coals of a fire until its glowing red, then weld it.
Yeah he'd have to bake it first but really just replace it
Who can name the movie that the quote "Lighten up Fransis" came from?
How did they make all those in the first place. What a huge cast production. Amazing
With the amount of heat they take a crack makes it scrap. Cheaper to replace than try to weld and repeat welding
Jb weld it 😂
@@NathansMoparGarage I ordered a new manifold, $100. But I am going to continue to practice on this one
check the threads and reuse
Definitely reuse.
RIP
@@carfriendsimulator9981 now it lives on as a future practice piece
The correct rod and process i can weld them.
I bet you can't
Would brazing it hold up?
@@josuepichardo5718 probably?
Nope, Tried welding an old Avery Tractor exhaust manifold, all i ended up doing was creating a bigger hole. Manifolds are cheap to buy.
@@LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC yeah, just figured I’d try it. Plus now I have it to practice on
😂😂 I tried to do the same. Didn't work either hahaha.
@@TheLupopovich it definitely takes more heat and more skill than I have to make it work 😂😂😂
Heat it up with a torch then weld
@@jordansche I tried that, but I’ve only got white gas, and it’s just not getting it hot enough. Also my “welder” is just a little flux core welder and probably isn’t powerful enough
Get a thread gauge and make sure that they haven't stretched if you're going to reuse old head studs
@@Romuls753 that’s a good idea, thanks👍
what gets me is the fact you painted the intake manifold surface :( :( really !! XD

Been having this same issue with my '06 titan se--have to bump start it every so often & that was working, until it wasn't yesterday after work. Left me at the Sheetz. This is something I can do myself before I have to get a tow. Thanks so much!! Could you tell me exactly what to ask for to get the part--is it Intermittent ignition switch? Thank you again!! This is awesome
*I guess intermittent is the problem, not the part..oops
@@catwil7510 it is the ignition switch. But usually you can’t get it specifically for the Titan without buying the whole key and lock assembly. The one I used is for a Nissan Xterra (it’s the same part) and I found 3 different brand part numbers to try. Carquest CSA1349, Autozone LS809, or Beck-Arnley 201-1825. Hope that helps
Thanks so much for the reply--was just looking thru auto zone and couldn't find it, that explains it! Appreciate your time in finding the part numbers, also! 🤞 found it!
Update: got the part from auto zone using the part number you provided. Was able to change it out myself, hardly took any time at all! And while it ended up not being the problem, was extremely helpful in confirming the problem to be the starter & further, immensely satisfying to be able to do the job myself thanks to your video!! Opened it up and found those points to be really charred & worn, so replacing didn't hurt a thing. Thanks again!
@@catwil7510 well, that sucks that it did not fix it, however I’m glad it narrowed down your issue and you got some satisfaction out of doing it yourself. 👍
Reusing the stock ones should be fine. All that orange paint should up the horses 😂🐴
@@NathansMoparGarage the Duplicolor can says each coat of paint adds 10hp
Those are fine for a stock build, you just want to make sure there is no heavy pitting on them. Minor rust no biggie, heavy pitting, can them. Oh and seal the threads when you install them.
@@RealWorldGarage 👍 what’s your thread sealer of choice? I like the Permatex liquid thread sealer
Stick with the factory bolts.
@@firestang70 I believe that be my plan assuming there’s no rust pitting once they are clean
Replace stock no upgrades. Those are best as designed by factory no aftermarket.

This guy had the same problem I have on the same car and on the same side to😂
@@ozzylowther3142 the source of my problem turned out to be a cam bearing that a machine shop had installed backwards so no oil getting to the drivers side rocker shaft. I ended up removing the rocker shaft and camshaft, then drilling thru the cam bearing from the top with it still installed to fix the issue
@@Foxcanfixit I should probably look into that thanks
@@ozzylowther3142 pulls the drivers side valve cover and start it, if you don’t see oil continuously dripping down the rocker arms and onto the valve springs then you have a blockage of some kind. Hope it helps
