Developing an art style is really difficult, especially if you want to establish an authentic personal practice. Over the past couple of years, I've worked hard on my drawing and painting and now I've finally found a way of working that I enjoy.
In this video I go through several sketchbook tours to show you how I got to that stage, and show the pivotal moment where I realised which direction I wanted to head in. Enjoy!

Hello ! Thank you to learn about it. Request to share a PDF
Super practical advice, I’ll definitely use these tips.
This was super helpful, glad I came across it.
your works are truely amazing they gave me a sence of relaxsation
Left Art School in 2017 and still developing my art style, let alone actually finding gallery representation or hanging in a group show is a rarity!
Do I need to include my contact informations like phone number and email, on my art portfolio for college applications?
Hi Thomas, would you include much writing in your portfolio? eg on a page with an image of a painting, would you write about the painting?
@@ChloeMurphy_ Depends on the context of the portfolio. Some applications may want writing others not. If it's a portfolio marketing your work, I'd say it's up to you depending on the context of your practice. If you feel as though some writing enhances the work then do it 👍
Thanks for upload)
Hi, thank you so much for this brillant video! I was planning to make my own portfolio but I was thinking to use Wix or Squarespace until I saw your video. I did not considered Canvas before but your portfolio looks so good & professional, it's very tempting. I was wondering when we create a digital portfolio, do we have the option to have it public or keep it private? Sorry if my question sound naïve but it's new for me . Thanks again and to share yr beautiful Art work.🙏
@@cristina8928 so with Canva this is just generating a PDF file or a series of images. You can host them on a website or give people access to a download link but Canva won't be a "public" page that will display it like a website would 😄
@@TomasFolanHasici Thank so much for taking the time to reply. I am feeling a little less ignorant😄
Hi! I'm applying for a textiles course and need guidance on creating a portfolio. It's been a while since I left school, so I don't have an existing portfolio. However, I hold an HNC in Floristry and an HND in Interior Design, and I've attended numerous night classes in various creative fields. Recently, I've been enjoying crocheting and making clothes. Unfortunately, I don't have photos of everything I've created. Any tips on how to best present my work and pull everything together would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Lindsay 🫣
My Quote : This is true bliss !! Working on your passion until the day you die !! See ya 😊
Hello Tomas 👋 I suggest " Drawing: Structure and Vision " by Fritz Drury. Those book change my life. I swear. I am Thai. I am not advertising. See ya 😊
You’d make a fine professor 👨🏫 🎉 Brilliant video!
This is helpful. I do more abstract and landscape but this is super helpful ❤
your work is amazing
i got into camberwell college of arts , i do feel like i am not the best student but thanks to my bestfriend i am now in camberwell first year student as of 2024
They judge your art who's to tell us what art is. It's what people like from piccaso to degas monet just do your art.
I need the template and some help could you provide your email
Thankyou!! This is very helpful 👍🏼✨
Thank you for this video. I love love love that you don't talk so unbelievably fast while you're talking. That impresses me as I am unable to follow along with tutorials/videos/workshops/etc. with presenters that talk a mile a minute. I truly appreciate your style. Thank you so much.
1:38 Não pude perceber tão claramente assim 😢
Thank you!
love your work.. having watched a few video of yours from before, the progress you have made is phenomenal
Did you finally make it to RCA?
Thank you so much. Great information.
Dilip Sur said something similar in one of his life drawing classes...to move from studies to abstraction of them is important. I've done urban sketching for so long and I wanna move into something more, and I guess this is it! I'd love to see a video on you showing your collections vs your creations 😊
Hey man, this is late (lol) but congrats! I'm also in London and doing a few courses here and there with RDS. I hope its gone well, one of my near future goals is the Intensive but for now I'll just be sticking to the short courses haha.
Why do people think art just means paintings?
Your work now looks so beautiful and genuine 🎉 I feel so happy for you to have gone through this journey. Can’t wait to see everything moving forward as well 🥳
Thank you 🙏
very helpful thank you Where did you print your book portfolio ? and on what kind of paper ? I am in the middle of designing mine now .
A very helpful guide for any artist...your portfolio looks great too 🖤
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing❤
my friend is doing this and I think hes cooked
Progress was very slow for me, there's so much to experiment with in terms of mediums and technique until you find a process that you love. It's also important to know that most artists will face rejection countless times whether it's from galleries or whatever, but not to let that hinder your creativity, progress, or sense of self worth. The reason for rejection isn't necessarily contingent on the quality of your work, it might just be that the subject matter doesn't resonate with a gallery or something trivial. I heard from Tim Packer, a Canadian artist, that there are art festivals/events that you can pay a few grand to go to and if the public loves your art and you have a reasonable supply, you could make 10-20k in a weekend, possibly even a sell-out show. Obviously the art would have to be "very good" and you could gauge this by reactions at smaller events before investing in a bigger art show/festival. It would be daunting to do one of those art festivals as an introvert, have you ever considered doing something like that? That's something I'm personally working towards.
Mixed media IMO is the only real way to create anything original.
grateful for the advice man
Your paintings are not bad but it is visible that you are not yet very developed as an individual. Your paintings will mature as you work on yourself. You need to dig a little deeper. It’s not about composing a pretty image. It’s also visible that you’re changing stiles a lot from one painting to the other and that’s also a sign that you’re in need of trying different things because you didn’t find your lane visually-conceptually. A.k.a. you’re not mature yet. I even notice the way you talk in the video, even if you have a beard you give a feeling you were a toddler just yesterday. You still want the milk of your mother brest. Abstract but true. No offence. It is visible to me. My last point now. I agree with your art world sociological observation. And I would like to add my observation to that. The status quo are using gender identity and so on to shape society in a certain way and are pushing and instrumentalizing young naive folks with fake idealistic woke ideologies that are actually stabbing from the back the minorities themselves. More and more LGBT people have enough of this but they can’t do anything about it. Because the status quo is controlling everything and is grabbing by the balls and using those LGBT people who are selling out the whole community. Let’s keep painting still a pure discipline and let’s leave this nonsense to mixed media mambo jambo circus artists. Thanks!
Well done! You've truly impressed me.
Don't apply to the RCA their fees are a rip off. Try the Royal Academy of Art postgraduate diploma course which is amazing!
Have no interest in the RCA now, but agree the politics of the school have gone downhill big time!
Hi! I'm not sure wether to do a fine art degree or graphics degree. I kind of want to go into Teaching but as well as being a graphic designer. Someone please help and advise me!! 🎀🎀
im in the same situation.
Hi. Came from your rejected application video from four years ago. Did you get in when you reapplied? I hope you did.😊
Got into the royal drawing school, best post grad course in London imo!
Are you of Romani origin?
