Don't worry, there was this Austrian guy that also got rejected from drawing school, but years later was president and became famous, try to be more like him!
Art is very subjective. Just because you didn't get in to this specific art school it doesn't mean you are not an excellent artist. But it makes sense why it is so important for you and want to be surrounded with tutors. Although there are still great alternatives like Artstation made it free all the courses unitl the year, New Masters Academy Watts Ateiler has amazing traditional art courses, Proko's page also excellent. CGMA and Gnomon also has some affordable courses and tutorials online. I think the Schoolism courses, Bobby Chiu's industry talks, and the discord podcasts/talks for Lightbox expo's channel also great. FZD School is about concept art but in his playlist around nr. 100 he talks a lot about basics and those are absolutely amazing, free and worth every invested minutes. Aaron Blaise also does digital and traditional art streams almost every week on UA-cam and Twitch. I would think that Eliza Ivanova's art and book also inspiring. James Jean's art also inspired so many artists. What I am trying to say is not to replace art school but there are so many online sources where you can learn from that you shouldn't feel that this rejection influences in any way your art. Just keep going and you will find the right education for yourself.
Some absolute gems in this comment, I'm aware of most people you've mentioned and consumed their content myself haha. Great recommendations and you're right!
I heard a fellow student say that they knew someone who got rejected 5 times, and on the 6th they got in! It's also such a small tight-knit course that you shouldn't feel angry at the rejection, although it's easier said than done obvs. I hope you are doing well, and have a great day :D Ps: and as some people I've heard have said, "Rejection is God's protection!" Even if you're not religious (im not) I still think what's not meant for us, we shouldn't try to get too attached to.
Hey Tomas! I am looking to apply to this exact course next year and it was helpful to see your series! I am personally an urban sketching addict haha, so I am really enthusiastic about applying - your tip about making all drawings cohesive was quite good, though now I'm even more anxious because I will probably need to come up with a whole new set of work for this! Anyway thanks so much for sharing your process, and all the best!!!!!
@@TomasFolanHasici thanks so much Tomas. To be fair, 99% of my work is only sketchbook so my main concern are the 10+10 pieces! Lets see how it goes anyway
When you submit your portfolio did you have a place where you could talk a little about the concept of each piece? Or is it expected of you to make an artist statement in general and let the work talk by itself?
I think if they offer you an interview you'd go deeper into your practice. Initial portfolio stage seems to be mostly visual, but there's also the sketchbook submissions as an opportunity for written work 👍🏼
Don't worry, I also got rejected and I only sent in drawings XD wonderfully, I think there are always opportunities around, even if sometime we have to make them ourselves :)
not going to lie, ,I was preparing a portfolio and now i've seen you got rejected imma pack up and leave. lol. no point applying lol, i'll try in a year
With just a quick glance, it appears to me your drawing (and perhaps your painting as well) is too mechanical as though you are the big Michaelagelo drawing out a cartoon on a wall getting ready to fill in the spaces. In my 1st year of elementary school my teacher did that to me and I rejected coloring in the pie shapes of the beach ball. You should too! To enter a drawing school, you need to think of drawing as the goal and not the means. A looser hand might be nice! I like your dedication and willingness to step out. Right now you are too academic and student oriented, which is okay and understandable, but you know who you are and what you have going for you (and that's a lot) so when the time comes you will just turn that away and simply be an artist who works, using your head but allowing your soul to be in charge. Art is subjective as the lady says above, but not totally. There are certain things that follow laws of nature. Those things you learn, make second nature, and then put them on auto pilot. If you never get into another school, that will not be the end, but you will just make it another way. A friend just got her MFA in painting and I think her work sucks, but she is very politically correct. She is a dear person but stubborn as an artist and refuses criticism. I hope good things for her, but.... . Good luck.
I got in o__o ua-cam.com/video/oWmw_EJHe28/v-deo.html

The sketchbook is very important for them to see how you think and respond to everything around you, carefully think about this too 😎👍🏻
