If it has got markings as a bike route (an on road lane, dedicated bike path or shared path), I will ride it and give my review of it.
Identiy Crisis - Is it a bike lane or car parking
We have these spaces on many roads that try to be car parking and a bike lane. How can they be both? Let's have a look at these kinds of parking lane/bike lanes and see what the parking rules say and see if they work.

The City Removed Some Parking and the Sky Didnt Fall In
Переглядів 86016 годин тому
Removing on street parking is often a reason given to not build more bike lanes. Opponents to bike lanes think the world is going to end if just one car park is taken away, and unfortunately elected officials often succumb to this pressure. Where the Southern Bike Link in Geelong, Australia crosses Carr Street, the sight lines were really poor due to parked cars, and had resulted in a number of...
Meaningful Improvement or Half Baked Effort

There are always cars parked in this bike lane in the centre of Geelong, especially after the parking enforcement officers have finished for the day. Finally after lots of asking, there have been some new bollards installed. Are these a meaningful improvement, or a half baked effort.
Rip out the bike lanes

The City of Greater Geelong Councillors proposed using 2 million dollars of rate payers money to rip out the newly installed bike lanes in central Geelong. They also voted at the last minute to cancel the Southern Bike Link stage 2 through the Geelong Suburb of Belmont. Let's take a look at the bike lanes and the councillors involved in those motions.

Bicycle Infrastructure - Geelong Vs Bendigo

Let's compare some observations of bicycle infrastructure in Bendigo to my home town of Geelong. I spent a few days in Bendigo and noticed some differences and similarities to what I see in Geelong. Some things were better in Bendigo, some things much the same, and some things worse. Both cities seem like pretty typical Victorian (or even Australian) car focussed towns.

Bike Lanes to Nowhere

Disjointed, disconnected bike lane networks are a big barrier to those wanting to safely travel around their city by bike. We take a look at 10 bike lanes to nowhere in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, where bike riders are thrown out into traffic lanes and busy roads to complete a trip. In many cases the missing bike lane may only be a block or so before it restarts.

Would you please do a review of the new bike lanes that follow the train line from Waurn Ponds to Geelong? The new bike lane is open between Gundog road to South Geelong. However it emerges onto Breakwater road and stops between the Geelong Show grounds and Fyans Road. It is another Geelong bike lane to nowhere! Love the videos!
I did some filming down there last week, but the section from Barwon terrace to the river wasn’t open yet. Once that is open, I will complete the review.
Your vid pretty muvh sums it up. If the authorities think that just stencilling bicycles on the roadway everywhere will placate cyclists , they are wrong. At least for me, they only serve to remind how lacking the bicycle infrastructure is over all. It is also disheartening to realise that most of the "better": infrastructure-e.g. the Copenhagen lanes appearing around Melbourne-is also often poorly designed and stinks of being a token gesture.
Schrödinger's road infrastructure.
Nice vid
The main problem is that there isint enough room to see him coming on his bike, that or hebis ridingnhis bike too gast for them to react
Cars travel much faster than bikes, so the the drivers can’t react to the speed of a bike, good luck reacting to the speed of a car.
Shocking.
When marked parking completely overlaps with a bike lane that is also immediately next to the kerb, would this kind of count as a subtype of this phenomenon? Example ///entertainer.news.yarn
(it's a what3words location on Mt Alexander Rd)
We have these lanes everywhere in Adelaide, in fact one local was killed on Duthy St in Unley earlier this year because of these parking/bike lane hybrid. The council of Unley has done nothing since his death and it was not the first one on that stretch of road in Adelaide's inner south.
Very sad and absolutely unacceptable. Maybe you can remind them with a question that will be read out loud at the next meeting and over livestream. I don't know if Unley do this but my council do.
I always compare that with workplace safety laws. No road would ever be able to operate if we applied the same workplace rules to roads!
@@alexwilder8315 Unfortunately I live in the bordering council with Unley and they will not take comments from those outside the council, even though it is on my daily commute
@@tangiers365 hmm maybe someone in your local FB bike groups is a resident and would consider it. A bit hard I know
@@alexwilder8315 There is an Unley BUG(bike users group) which do great things for the community. I have to focus on my own council area because of where I reside unfortunately. Thanks for the tips
This is obscene! Imagine a car lane that was also a parking lane . no one could move! think its so the council or whomever could tick off covering 'active transport'
Just an exercise to get the bike lane stats up!
Be quiet and accept what your big brother gives you 👺
Ha ha! I like the idea of parking my bike in a car lane! It's a wonder how entitled car drivers can be.. Maybe the police can enforce parking rules instead of just the helmet laws.
🤣🤣 the amount of times I call the police to report cars blocking the bike lane which is a clearway yet they tell me they don't care about this offense. This is SApol btw. I imagine if I 'park' my bike in a car lane I would be arrested.
I wonder if we could install three bolted-down bike parking hoops in the adjacent lane one night to make a point 😅😂
@@tangiers365hmm report to the council might go further. Some councils are super hungry for parking fee revenue. 🤑🤑🤑
@@alexwilder8315 Yeah the problem is the council and all of them here in South Aus will only do something about cars in bike lanes if its between 9-5 monday-friday and they have staff to visit which they never do. Many local drivers know this and park in bicycle clearways all weekend and after 5pm knowing they can't be fined.
Oh wow, that's jaw-dropping. I ride in the ACT and when I occasionally think its getting too hard I come and look in your channel for a sanity check!! Thanks for sharing what I sometimes find quite hard to believe.
It astounds me what I see now. So much goes unnoticed and is accepted out there in the road!
Geelong is such a weird city honestly.
Delineators and bollards are technically distinct.
I think it'd be better if a lot of the parking was behind buildings and in alleys I guess. That's generally how it is in Japan. And I've seen examples of parallel parking in some New York alleys(likely not Manhattan due to how few it has).
The Geelong CBD congestion has been terrible for years, especially during trendy visiting times. Why would anyone want to go there when after you've tried a few times without success. I can't fathom how bike lanes could have made it even worse.
nice. the 1 cyclist per week using this doesnt have to stop or pay attention when crossing the road. fu the thousands of cars that use this road per week and the people wanting to park in those 3 spaces. still no one using the bike lanes in your vids!
Wondering where your numbers came from. Please let me know your source, or did you make your stats up?
Thanks for watching again. I notice you keep coming back to watch each week. Maybe you should dust the bike off and try riding into the CBD, it’s way faster and more enjoyable than being stuck in traffic.
See where I live in Arizona it's exactly the reverse. There's never anything like a "Give Way" sign to the drivers, only "Yield" signs for the riders. Ass backwards if you ask me. Doesn't matter where either. Most always the same excepting along one short clip of the recreational bike path.
Partially related: Did you see the 7:30 report on a couple of deadly cycling intersections that was on tonight? It is up on YT.
Yes, thank you for the reference. The guy speaking on the report from bike west has been very helpful for me with information for the videos, and also for getting Bike Geelong started.
Good change, the removed car spaces would be better if they had some sort of cross thatching paint to make it more obvious no parking there.
You are correct, and extending the kerb would be even better!
Sure, it's a minor improvement. However, the situation is far more grim if instead of following the 'bicycle lane' north, you need to head west, which means connecting onto Kilgour St and then Noble St, which is the only option for some. There is nothing remotely 'bicycle friendly' if one needs to cross Latrobe Terrace/Princes Hwy there unless you head 5km north to Little Malop St, and 5km south again.
I have to cross moorabool street and Latrobe Terrace regularly and neither are fun near Kardinia Park
Nice video and advocacy. It’s great to shine a light on local politicians. There isn’t enough coverage of things that affect our everyday life. Best of luck in Geelong. I’m from Brisbane but only recently realised some of the comments from local council, like pedestrian crossings are downgrades, who would ride a bicycle etc. like to redo my recent vote 😂.
Parking in a bike lane should be immediate towing and license suspension. Those drivers are clearly inept; their inability to manage a parked car raises one question, should they be trusted with a moving one?
Hobartian here agreeing with @bobburton9936’s comment. The go to excuse for putting in bike lanes is that they’re used by commuters so it’s good for the environment, but for all but the most central city streets, the bike lanes go entirely unused on weekdays, and only see use from mobs of cyclists on weekends who spill out and take up more than half the car lane anyway. Bikes need to gtfo back to the footpaths. They do NOT belong on roads.
because of the bikes lanes and shit i avoid the cbd as much as possible by car. but the biggest thing in killing the cbd was it became shit.
At least COGG are trying to make some changes to improve it rather than leave it as same old and just expecting that it will get better.
You're a legend mate! Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
I unfortunately had to drive to at kilda road the other day, a whole lane gone and not a bike in sight. I found a park, did my business item, walked to a half empty pub, went home, not going back.
There are other options apart from driving to St Kilda Road. Tram, soon a train and bike lanes. Just need to think a bit differently.
@@bikeroutebuddy as I was transporting sensitive company equipment, well, no . Yes trains are coming to that area but it used to be easy by car. Now it’s not, so I just wont if go. Thats even more eco friendly, just don’t go anywhere . The cbd can get stuffed , it was already wrecked by city and state planners allowing redevelopment vandalism anyway. Now even the roads are gone. I’ll spend my money out here in the suburbs and on Amazon
I'd give it a 2/10 TBH. To me 5/10 would be metal bollards protecting both locations. 10/10 would be to fully separate the bike path with both a curb and hip high physical and shrub barrier - maybe move the one at location 3 behind the tree so it acts as extra protection, and have the intersections raised to pedestrian level at the ped / bike crossing.
I thought I may have been a bit too generous!
@@bikeroutebuddy After seeing Amsterdam and Paris bike networks I think I'M still being generous.
I think your video answers 1 very important question about the bike lanes. WHY DO WE NEED THEM ? a 7 minute video about bike lanes and NOT ONE PERSON USING THEM, we get 1 stock photo of bike users and 4 cyclists at 3:42 who aren't using the lanes. stop going to Geelong council meeting and wasting their time and taxpayers money. NO ONE WANTS OR USES THE BIKE LANES YOUR PROVIDING THE PROOF !!!
The video addresses the lack of usage: The lane ends in a major intersection with no safe way to pass through! Bike lane usage is much higher when the conditions are actually safe. If the Gheringhap St bike lanes connected to the Malop St bike lanes as mentioned in the video, it would allow many more people to safely access the main shopping area. How many people would drive to work if the last kilometre of the road was a steep 4wd track? Usage drastically increases when conditions are safe and when routes actually go places
It’s pretty hard to use them when they are always blocked with parked cars! I also love the way that when you see something that doesn’t back up your argument you accuse it of being a “stock” photo. By the number of times I have nearly been killed by drivers that don’t see me in the bike lane is an indication that people driving never see people riding in the bike lanes whether they are present or not!
@@bikeroutebuddy the "stock" photo I referred too is at 1:31 but my argument is pretty simple, there no one using the bike lanes. Ive lived in Geelong for over 40 years. I saw them install the first bike lanes, Ive seen all the alterations and accommodations put in for cyclists, In all that time I would estimate (and this is being really generous) I've seen 20 cyclists using it, not 20 per year 20 in total. No one uses em not because there unsafe, Geelong is not a condensed urban city it is a sprawled out country town. most of us dont have the time to waste 2hrs getting around on a bike. There are tonnes of bike tracks around Geelong hardly used, the only group of cyclists I see in Geelong is when the cadel evans bike thing is on and they come out of the woodwork, the rich wankers who ride in from Barwon Heads not using the bike lanes but drifting all over Barwon Head Rd and Latrobe Terrace to get a coffee on the waterfront.
The ONLY thing that will get their attention and change their behaviour is having to fix their cars. Jersey barriers and other tall concrete blocks will solve the problem ($$$).
5:35, to be clear, i am a cyclist and i advocate heavily for protected lanes, but they may have not put them up all the way to the intersection for trucks making difficult turns? (Unless there are already truck restrictions) They should still have installed some form of cyclist protection/something to disincentivise parking there other than paint and it being illegal. maybe some armadillos (like 6:36?) or a short mountable curb, so trucks could still pass over? They did something very similar here in my city, where the curb protecting cyclists drops down to a rumble strip so that trucks have the clearance to perform their turns, while the rumble strip still prevents drivers from cutting the corner, or parking in the bike lane. props to you for showing up and advocating for cyclists where you live, cheers from canada, i hope you can get more protected bike lanes! p.s. happy to be your 999th subscriber :)
The first on - little malop st - is one way, so vehicles aren’t coming out and turning left into Gheringhap. (We drive on the left). The second one could be for the reason of vehicles turning left into Gheringhap, however they didn’t stop the kerbs short on the other examples
@@bikeroutebuddy Then I dont see any reason they shouldn't have extended the protection all the way to the intersection. Seems like a half baked bike lane protection plan to me...
Wow, positive response from the authorities. Congrats, it looks like you will break 1,000 subscribers soon.
Just got to 1000! Need some more success with the authorities!

thank you for your tireless effort against these tyrannical car brained fools
It’s actually quite fun. There is no shortage of topics!
7:21 it is interesting that the TAC can pay for 6month motel accommodation for a client while bathroom renovations are undertaken in their home. Would it not be more economical to have safe bike lanes to prevent injury than pay after the event. Hope there is not a conflict of intent......
Why do municipalities hate free money so much? This is a problem I see in my country as well, municipalities just really seem to hate actually enforcing parking rules with tickets, I just dont get why they cant do enforcement, I think a lot of problems could be solved without any physical infrastructure, just by actually enforcing the rules and getting free ticket money.
You beat me to it with the phrase "half arsed" It looks simply like a box ticking exercise for COGG to say that they are addressing the needs of bicycle users, without actually doing too much about it. I'd suggest everyone takes a close look at their council candidates when voting this week.
Good work.. That's a good point about how these people would view the issue of safety at work, but no concern about where they park..
I gave them an appropriate google review!
This is Australia, it's not CROW manual/international best practises, so it's necessarily quarter-arsed.
your video is dumb and not right. Before any bike lanes were added over 90% of Geelong CBD parking was angled parking not parallel and 2 lane roads. then they added the first round of bike lanes(which was proven no one used). This is when people claimed the blke lanes will be the cause of the CBDs demise, at this time there was barely any empty shops in Geelong. to add this first round of bike lanes is when they halved the amount of parks available when switching from angled to parallel. this also caused the Westfield in Geelong which was free parking for the 1st 2hrs to become the ONLY Westfield in Australia which charges for parking. From then on its been a slow death for Geelong with a corrupt council doubling down on dumb ideas and implementing (at taxpayers expense) all the alterations of moving and adjusting bike lanes to cater for you and about 100 others that will use the system out of 250,000+ population of GGelong
That is drawing a long bow to blame the bike lanes on two streets in the whole CBD for all the problems you have written here. If lack of parking is the issue, why are there so many empty car parks on every street?
Good to see action did get taken at least, I've had MANY experiences of just being ignored by council. I reckon those regulars to those "parking spots" should have a bike lock locked through their wheel, like a wheel boot, that'd get the message across.
I’d thought about that a number of times! I believe the City did follow up with that repeat offender, but it would have just been a nice request, as they won’t issue tickets unless they see them
Your videos are fantastic. I would love to try and connect over email as my family begins the moving process. We are heading to Geelong in March and getting a sense of whats happening there is a huge benefit.
Hi Victor, I think we have already connected through bike Geelong on FB
@@bikeroutebuddy perfect!
"I don't think anyone would argue that all cars should be banned from the CBD" I mean...I would make that argument, while understanding how infeasible it would be.
They can use cameras / induction loop to detect bikes approaching light controlled crossings and triggering them so the bike doesn't have to stop. Though I think they should just put a train back in again - or put in a tram.
6:08 As far as I am concerned every single every single learner driver in Australia should be taught the “Dutch Reach” way of opening their car door. It was drummed into me as a learner some 40+ years ago, and I literally could not count the number of times I have paused to allow a rider to pass after seeing them as I go to open my door.
Great for people with disability issues. Not 🤦
The main problem with the northern Gheringhap street part is they put several car parks in and removed a lane when it should just be two lanes and the bike lanes, forcing people to merge into one lane for less than 100m just to split back out for the intersection seems needlessly dangerous. Everything else is fine.
It's literally the exact same with the Adelaide City Council at the moment The ACC canned the only east - west bike link in adelaide city because they would lose 18 paid car parks even though they own all the multi story car parks in the city
We have got a section at the end of one of the main routes that needs 10 parks removed to connect up the main north/south route to the main east/west route, but city of Geelong won’t remove these parks. We covered it in the Bike Lanes to Nowhere video.
@bikeroutebuddy omg it's like we live in a parallel universe
You should hear people complain that the city is dead and no one is in the city, and in the next breath say there are no car parks. If the city is dead, then the car parks will be empty!
Good work mate. If only more of geelong could see this
