The route turning left from Barwon Heads Road onto the bike path heading along beside the golf course and over the river is quite good but the old asphalt path is narrow. You can use Tucker Street - although it's a bit hair-raising - to join the new concrete path that runs beside the racecourse and the showgrounds to the start of the Bellerine Rail Trail. Not sure what happens if you turn left at Carr street to go under the new Fyans St rail bridge....
Lol! I went for a gander on this tonight. I have been riding past it and wondering if it goes anywhere for ages and thought I'd check it out... I pretty much did the same thing and ended up in a random vacan lot?!? Nice path though.
I had the same problem with the ultimate dead end and no way to get to Warralily shops. But then I went back and tried to return by a different route i.e. Reserve Road to Torquay Road, to make a round trip rather than just go back the way I came. Reserve Road is scary - not recommended for the faint-hearted! Marshalltown Road is better - at least you can resort to the footpath there.
Roughly how long is this bike path? Aren the end points places people living along or near the path are likely visit frequently? Does the path connect with paths leading to other destinations of interest?
It’s about 4 km. It kind of connects to the southern bike link into the CBD but not that well. The southern end ends up in a car dependent residential area. Needs about 2 km more to get to the warralily shopping centre.
No lights either as a point of why people don't use shared paths. Most roads have lighting...even though cars have much better lights...but cyclists and pedestrians alike are left to their own devices...often on shared paths that have all sorts of cracks and holes and overgrown bits unlike this new path
There is also a bike lane on the road, so I guess they wanted to ride in that bike lane and not on the shared path. Here are the rules from the Vic Roads Website "You don't have to use an off-road bicycle path, separated footpaths or shared paths (if there is one) when riding a bike. You can choose to ride on the road instead if you wish (eg local roads, arterial roads, multi-lane roads). But you cannot ride on urban freeways (see freeway advice below). A few signs would be a huge improvement!
"nice and quiet and the air is fresh and clear"...at a major road intersection? bro lol

This is why I ride roads.

Nope. You need too then use Barwon heads road. The problem then is that the road litter is so much and the shoulder isn't great on a 70kph road
I think I got lost just watching you. Wondering why the cyclists on your left were not on the path like you too?
