After my recent trip to the USA & Canada I really wanted to start some new projects around the layout but decided I had to clear my workbench of existing jobs first: next step is the helix!

Regular viewers of my channel will know that I've been in the US and Canada recently for a work trip: this is a summary of the railroad-related things I got up to during my stay, both in 1:87 and 1:1 scale - and includes footage of my visit to John Parker's inspirational BNSF Fall River Division!

Phew!! After a bit of a lean time, plus electrical troubles galore in my last update, this month I have some positive progress to report... plus I share news of a forthcoming trip which will have a big impact on the layout this winter.

You know how it is when you hit some snags on your model railroad - a case of one step forward, two steps back... Both my lift-out bridge section and the helix have been causing me all kinds of grief lately, so in today's video I at least get to grips with the former. In this video I share some of the building projects I've started during a recent, otherwise fairly barren spell of modelling on Fairview. The catch? There's not enough room on the current layout for any of these buildings or industries!!?

It's been a quiet spell on Fairview, but recently I have at least upgraded Ferguson Fabrication with a new fence and an operating gate and finished the backdrop in this area. There's also some new developments with a road overpass bridge at Juniper Street, plus a sneak preview of the forthcoming glass plant for the layout. My trains have never really coped all that well with the strain of an 8% gradient from my hidden staging beneath the layout, so I purchased a cheap kit to evaluate the feasibility of retrofitting a small helix. In today's video and build and test the kit, simply to make sure that trains will climb this gradient (and the R1 curve) better. It seems to work!

At the weekend Tom came over to put the Aspen Grove Industrial Lead through its paces in a "real" operations session. There were five cars to spot, and four to pick up and that was more than enough for a very satisfying session - not everything was plain sailing but it was very enjoyable all the same!

UA-camr Joey Buczek of the channel Late Night Hobbies recently announced that he was releasing a range of MDF kits featuring nondescript industrial units in HO scale. Intrigued, I acquired one and built it - watch along as I discuss some of the kit's features and then place on my Fairview layout. So it's sort of a build/review video... but then again it's sort of neither of those things too!!? ...

Following a recent visit to Tom Percival's wonderful Apopka Vineland Model RR we have started to develop a scheme for operations across both our layouts.
