CLIMBING DIARY #12 | Trying, Failing, Moving on
It took me two years to finally edit this video, so it's a bit of a blast from the past. Meanwhile, I am back in Switzerland in a regular job wich I really enjoy. Obviously, this also means that making climbing films is currently taking a back seat. But who knows what the future holds.
Anyway... about this video: After I left El Chorro in February 2022, I ended up in Chulilla again. The goal was to break through to the next personal grade, which for me was 8b. I got tantalizingly close but ultimately failed. In order to keep my sanity, I moved on to Coll de Nargo which turned out to be a real gem.

CLIMBING DIARY #11 | Why Do We Climb? Soul-Searching in El Chorro
Переглядів 7 тис.2 роки тому
During my time on the road, climbing full time, I sometimes ask myself the question every climber probably faces sooner or later: Why do I do this? Why invest so much time and energy into this seemingly useless task? Join me in a bit of soul searching against the beautiful backdrop of Desplomilandia near El Chorro in the very south of Spain. ▼ LINKS ▼ Vanlife video: ua-cam.com/video/mVNlLd4amno...
CLIMBING DIARY #10 | The King Line of Marbella

On our way to El Chorro, we stop in the luxury town of Marbella to enjoy the high life on the seaside for a bit. The real reason to come here lies just outside of town though: a climbing area called Puerto Rico. With its maze of red holes in grey limestone, it makes for some juggy climbing in the 6th grade. My main attraction is a route called Chilambalina though, which goes up the lip of a hug...

We spend over two months in the winter climbing paradise of Chulilla in Spain. I love settling down in one place for a while and really get to know the area. In this video you will get an idea of what our typical vanlife routine looks like and also get a good overview of the Climbing in this place. We take a ferry from Italy to Corsica to sample the local rock for a couple of weeks. Around the city of Corte, the tafoni granite in the Restonica Valley produces some unique formations and beautiful walls. This is the place if you want to climb steep routes with good holds even in grades as low as 6a. Our visit gets cut a bit short, unfortunately, because the late autumn winds bring some unco...

We are finally back on the road and we restart our journey in the higher Parts of Val Pennavaire in Italy. Here, the route setters have been busy and I find myself the most frustrated I have been in a long time: «Acchiappamara», a striking 7c in the new CPR crag near Alto, eludes me for several days and I am seriously doubting if I'm able to do it in a sensible timeframe. Looks great! One question about what I assume is the lower-off on 'Nadelos som Cola' at about 3:23mins: how do you lower from those two hangers once you've removed the quickdraws?

    • @samuelbuchmann
      @samuelbuchmann 7 місяців тому

      Good question, I actually don't remember :D The draws are not ours so they might have been «fixed» (though they could be easily removed). You could also just clean them from above as the anchor is basically just below the edge of the cliff which you can just walk up to.

    High quality content here! I do have a question for you though: how do you manage to film from multiple angles? multiple cameras? repeating the route filming it from different angles? I hope to see more frequent content in your channel, keep it up mate!

    • @samuelbuchmann
      @samuelbuchmann 8 місяців тому

      Thank you! Both. I use multiple cameras simultaniously (a drone and a big one), but also have to film climbs in more than one section. For the closeups from above, I put my iPhone in a quickdraw, start recording, rapell down a couple of draws and pull the rope. So usually, I will redpoint a route first off camera and then repeat it a few times just to film. This method obviously takes quite a lot of effort but yields better results than butt-shots from below :)

    • @samuelbuchmann
      @samuelbuchmann Рік тому

      Thanks! The DJI Drones have some auto follow options. Sometimes they work quite well, but often they don't if you move vertically (like in climbing). I kinda stopped using those auto tracking modes lately. It's usually better to just place the drone statically and then do multiple laps of the climb.

    • @samuelbuchmann
      @samuelbuchmann Рік тому

      Thanks! As I‘m currently working as a tech editor, I have been testing a lot of drones lately 😄 At the moment, I would recommend the DJI Mini 3 Pro. It‘s super small, yet the image quality is pretty good and it has 10bit color in the D-Cinelike profile in case you grade your videos in postproduction. Or if you want to really go all the way, get the Mavic 3 Classic and film in DLog. It’s also easier to fly because it has obstacle sensors in all directions. But on the flipside, the mavic is a lot more expensive, bigger and heavier.

    Really nice and well made video! One thing tho is that there actually are some hard routes, but they are not included in the Climb Norway guide (Which i assume you used). There is another sector called nerhoel, that has really nice steep climbing with big moves on big holds. In my opinion this is the best sector. Nerhoel has an 8a+, 8a, 7c+ and a couple 7b+. A couple other routes are left out of the Climb Norway guide as well. Full coverage of Ishoel is in the local guide, but it is unfortunately out of sale, which is a shame really.

    I guess for me, its the one thing in life where things are perfect if you put enough time in. Everything else is never perfect and demands a lot of time - have a great career but not enjoying it/enjoying your work but not having enough money, or relationships - you have good communication, slow sex life, great understanding, too much stereotype. In climbing, its not like that. The send is always perfection. It always feels (to me) like Im close to god, divinity, you know... And Im not even religious. Its just sometthing about perfecetly executing all of those extremely specific movements, pushing your body beyond the point you literally programmed yourself to tthink is possible. Trough repetetive failiure on a project, you emboss into your mind that its impossible, yet, on that send go, you just do it. You reach the anchors - you scream, you laugh, you cry, but inside of you - there is silence. For that one moment - you have reached trough perfection. I have done many sports before, many activities, but never have I encountered such perfection as in climbing. Throw in the other stuff you mentioned and yea, hard to contest.

    • @samuelbuchmann
      @samuelbuchmann 2 роки тому

      Wow, that's such a nice perspective! The way you describe the fleeting moment of feeling perfection when sending a route really resonates with me.

  • @alexbarcovsky4319

    8a has been my dream forever. I am currently at 7c and Im wondering what should I train more, endurance or strength. What was your bouldering level at the time of sending this beast? On rock and moonboard or some other system board? Im really trying to prepare myself for projecting trips this season because I dont get to climb on rock that much. Also great content, I believe you will get much bigger if you keep at it.

    • @samuelbuchmann
      @samuelbuchmann 2 роки тому

      The answer on this question depends on the route(s) you intend to climb and on your current strengths. There are short, bouldery 8as and long, sustained ones. Personally, I'm pretty bad at the former ones and better at the latter ones. I have never done any systematic training with a moonboard or anything else - I just climbed a ton on different rock. The result is that I have gotten good at onsighting routes in all kinds of styles and that I have a really good endurance. However, my bouldering strength is rubbish. This is becoming a problem for any further progress because I find that I just can't do the crux moves in 8bs and can therefore not even begin to project them ;-) All that being said, I believe that a lot of climbers have the physical strength and endurance to climb 8a and even harder. What holds them back more often is the fear of falling, even if it's very subconscious (ask yourself: do you actually try the hardest you can when climbing above bolts even if you are not sure if you will reach the next hold? Or if a hold is super painful on your skin?). The second thing which can hold you back a lot is speed. Trying to climb statically and securely saps so much power compared to climbing dynamically and fast. Just by working on that, a lot of climbers could jump up a grade or two. Also, it helps a lot if you can spend multiple days over a few weeks working on a single route. I find it completely baffling sometimes, how big the difference is between trying a route the first time and after 5+ tries. Also: Thanks :)
