Welcome to the Third Time Around Ranch. After living in the country most of our lives we still felt like something was wrong. We kept talking about getting back to the basics of life and taking care of ourselves like our great grandparents did. So instead of depending on stores for everything, we bought some land in Alabama where we intend to build debt free on a fixed income and become as self sufficient as we possibly can. We are happy to have you join us as we carve out a new way of life for ourselves and our youngest son.
We would love to hear from you, you can leave us a comment or if you'd rather we love to receive mail.

    Cover your beds with some kind of mulch. I used pine animal bedding, we had a drought here and my well ran dry and wasn't producing enough water to water the garden but my tomatoes and peppers that was in this bed where I layed 2-3 layers of cardboard and covered the soil with pine shavings not only survived but thrived during the drought. Its still going right now. I only hand watered that bed 2-3 time during the summer and it rained maybe 3 good times. I'm doing this to all of my beds and my grow bags now😊

    Tomatoes thrive in 70-85 degree weather. When temps get to 90+ they don’t set their blooms too well. I planted tomatoes in my hoop house three years ago…early in the spring. Mades bushels. The past two years I planted later, and that hot hoop house was the worst place I could have planted them. Even with full ventilation, it was way too hot (I’m in SW Alabama). I tried shadecloth. Too little sun and still too hot. Squash need to be planted early too. My winter squash varieties all did great. Kabocha, butternut, spaghetti, acorn all harvested already. Early September is best for most fall crops. Good luck.

    Tomatoes like dappled light - they grow better under shade cloth and out of full sun. They're native to forested south american climate - specifically the Andes Mountains , in the northern climates where we don't have such a long hot growing season they tend to do quite well , but the tomatoes I grow in big pots on back porch (south eastern exposure and shaded part of the day by trees or the house) do far better than the tomatoes we keep out in the full sun garden. I want to get a hoop house myself for our back yard garden for tomato growing (Taters do phenomally, though) which I plan to cover the hoop house in shade cloth that lets rain in to water the garden while keeping the pants from full hot sun..

    • @ThirdTimeAroundRanch
      @ThirdTimeAroundRanch 5 місяців тому

      Interesting, I had no idea that tomatoes were native to forested areas. For some reason I assumed they liked full sun. Guess I should not assume things and do more research.

    I am surprised at the low horsepower. I have the Frontier OS31 and a Kohler 14 horsepower and that is barely adequate. If the motor ever fails I would definitely up to at least 20hp. Also. You need to get that mill up to crotch height. All that jumping up and down adds to the workload and time. My trailer was expensive but all the jumping up and down and crawling under just made me realize it was worth it. Good luck and eat your Wheaties!
