Back In SICILY! 🏖️ For An Italian Summer
Day 192. 47km (81159kms 7yrs)
After a couple of weeks off I had to find a little bit of motivation for the ride today. I’d already extended my hostel stay by one night but today - mercifully - they full; it was the kickstart I needed. So I enjoyed one last Italian hostel breakfast before hitting the road.
I had some chores around Palermo before leaving town though. I already knew there were no suitable tyres to be had but I was in search of some sleeves, gloves, camping gas, and the nice Palestine mural I’d spotted that would make a nice pic with Gibbo parked in front.
All complete, I began the ride along the coast to the east. It was a lovely clear day and though the best views were to the west behind me, it was a delightfully flower-filled little lane that brought me to the village of Sant Elia. Thanks to a small spit of land this tiny village enjoys two pretty little beaches were so, knowing this to be my last opportunity for some time, I took a swim before beginning the climb inland.
Initially so steep I had to get off and push, I knew the gradient to be only 3% rising to 5% for most of the 9km climb. As usual I’d attempted to stay fit during my break by running, but I’d still inevitably gained weight and lost some cycling strength.
Once the road turned to begin following the hill around things became much easier (though I was shamed by one runner who convincingly overtook me as we both plodded uphill 😆)
I greeted nine MAMILs before I lost count.
From the crest of the climb a very poor and very steep road brought me down to Lago Di Caccamo where I began looking for a camp. A view of the water would’ve been ideal but I preferred to be hidden so picked a space between fenced off fields amongst some trees. Alarmingly the plant that I suspect of causing more than one Tunisian puncture is in abundance here, but is perhaps less aggressively dry and spiky; I will still give it a very wide berth.
Delighted with my Italian dinner of box wine, mozzarella, olives and tomato I was pleased to be on the move again.

Goodbye TUNISIA! 😢 Tunis Medina & the Ferry To Sicily
Переглядів 6874 години тому
Day 173. 36km (81112kms 7yrs) The couple of days I spent with Nedra gave me a great - albeit belated - insight into how it is to cycle as a Tunisian woman here. It’s not my experience to share so suffice it to say it is very different from my experience as a European woman. My ferry wasn’t until 03:00 so I had the day to revisit Tunis medina and eat some of my favourite foods all over again. Me...

Day 170. 67km (81076kms 7yrs) On my last day riding across Tunisa I woke outside the little French church-turned-home of the kind family hosting me and my tent. They brought coffee, bread, and questions about my trip through the country. Knowing I was about to have a couple of weeks away from camping I did my best to not drip sweat as I packed away the tent, a challenging task in the direct sun...

Day 169. 71km (81009kms 7yrs) In a forest how did I still managed to pitch my tent in a sunny spot?! Despite this error I loved my camp so much I took some time to enjoy a cold instant coffee before packing up and getting on my way. Once at a cafe I made sure to appreciate the sweet burnt smell of the sheesha pipes as I sipped my coffee. All too soon these details will become distant memories.....

Day 168. 48km (80938kms 7yrs) I woke to the first clouds I’ve seen since in rained on me in Tunis almost 3 months ago. The tent was covered in dew so I waited a while for the sun to burn through the sea mist but still ended up packing away a slightly damp tent. Two early morning hikers warned me of snakes. Back down from the hill, at the entrance to the village I was flagged down by a man on th...

Day 167. 41km (80890kms kms 7yrs) Happily, I woke just in time to watch the hazy red sun re-emerge from the opposite horizon. I’d already gathered a bag of litter from around my camp, and picked up another for good measure as I heaved Gibbo t...

I also booked some time off the bike for when I return to Europe so I feel newly energised for my last week in Tunisia. Going inland? Great! If you ride across to the south coast you'll need to be sure to go by Agrigento. There are beautiful Greek ruins there. Also, Marsala is really nice. Though it's more south-southwest from Palermo. I guess by time you're reading this you'll be already well past either of these places.

@@helsonwheels That's what I was thinking when you said you were going inland. Hotter also I'd guess. But, I bet that will be a nice experience. I've cycled a lot in Sicily, but always on the south coast. Mostly in the southwest (Trapani, Marsala, Erice, and San Vito Lo Capo). I love cycling there.

The area you were in isn’t a safe area , which is why you were being followed. There’s a risk of kidnapping , you should be pleased you were being watched over . Also, if they know where you are, if you have an accident they can find you easier.

    • @helsonwheels
      @helsonwheels 3 дні тому

Mostly true but I suppose I’m a libertarian in this respect - I don’t enjoy giving up my freedoms in exchange for a promise of improved safety. Additionally I pay very close attention to the gov.uk travel advice for every country I visit. The region I was being followed was coded green, with a small portion in the amber area (avoid all but essential travel) and I completely avoided Kasserine and surrounds precisely because at the time it was coded red (avoid all travel) for the reason you state. It’s worth noting that in all the 88 countries I’ve visited (some entirely coded red eg lebanon and Iran) only Saudi Arabia and North Korea have taken this much interest in my whereabouts. But as I return to africa next year it will be interesting to see if this remains the case. At least I should be ready for the surveillance next time.. 🙂
