- Day 149. 106km (80115kms 7yrs)
I didn’t need to spend two days at the hostel at Tataouine, but I like it there so much with its balcony view of the market, not to mention freezer for my beers… But time in Tunisia is running out so I packed up and began the 100km trip to the coast.
The road itself was pretty dull and uneventful but a couple of male interactions stood out. Firstly a man - in an empty bar - brushed passed my bum, a highly unusual event in a region where men routinely step into the road to allow me to pass as I walk on the pavement. And secondly, a young lad on a motorbike pulled up alongside me so fixated on my pedalling legs he was at risk of an accident. Both highly unusual occurrences in a land where I’m often hit on, but until today have not been leered at or physically touched.
In Medenine I had a quick look at their Ksar - though at this stage I’ve seen far better - and later, stopped at a small Roman site by the sea. Other than that it was direct to the ferry where I found a long queue of cars that would be waiting some time for a crossing on a boat which carried only about 20 vehicles at a time (and foot passengers, and cyclists for free).
On Djerba Island I was hoping for a campsite on the beach and a swim but a couple of vehicles beside rules that out, so I kept back from the water and found a space amongst the sparse palm trees as the sun set. Apart from a dog’s incessant barking at my intrusion it felt like a pretty good spot.

Amazing. Well done
Thank you! ☺️🚴🏻♀️
Yay! Congratulations on two leisurely rides around the planet. It's been great following along.
From the get go just about! You deserve an award! 😆 🏆
@@helsonwheels 😂 Just about. I can still remember you complaining about the hills (actually bridges) in Australia. 🤣 It has really been fun following your journey.
I’ve come a long way! Literally and figuratively 😆
Viewed the island on Google Earth, the beaches look amazing! Enjoy! 🏝️😎👙👒🕶️
Thanks! Yes some impossibly turquoise water and white sand 💚 it’s gorgeous!
Wow, huge kudos, chapeau 💪. Enjoying your regular content. Please send some sunshine to Europe, we’re travelling through France and Germany so far, and it’s been so wet 😂
Haha oh no!!! Wishing you dryer weather and tailwinds! 🤞🏼🤞🏼
Congrats, x 2
Thank you! 🌍🚴🏻♀️🌍
It's hard for solo travelers to feel the gratification and celebrations for accomplishment. Let's hope your audience helps.
Thank you, i’m genuinely happy celebrating on my own with a cold beer and a good view, but it’s also nice to receive the online well wishes too ☺️
Did the old man pay for your cappuccino as an apology for brushing past you or what exactly
No clue. We never spoke. I’d given him a smile and a nod when I arrived because he too was arriving by bike. In hindsight i believe this mislead him into thinking I had some other interest in him.
If he’d touched me accidentally an apology would haven been a far more normal response. But as I said in the video it’s very hard to believe that this was an accident; that simply doesn’t happen here, not even in a busy market. And this was in a spacious and empty room.
I have to say, apart from the Star Wars stuff being really cool, I have no incentive to visit this country whatsoever from watching these Vlogs. Fortunately, it wasn’t high on my list anyway 😅
Each to their own. The world is huge so I’m sure there’s plenty of places to your liking. For me though, cycling Tunisia has been a great privilege and experience
@@helsonwheelsthat’s lovely and you’re right, the world is massive (we have plans just to explore Scotland for a while to start with) and it’s finding what’s right for you.
Scotland is a superb starting point! I especially loved cycling the old rail trails there, and the islands… gosh, when the weather is kind… outstanding 🥰 🏴 🚴🏻♀️
