It was lovely to catch up with Claudio (I even let him take fully laden Gibbo for a quick spin!) I pumped the tyres once more and headed in the direction of his local bike shop. @topcyclehammamet fixed me up with 3 new tubes, with the car-type valves I prefer, plus some extra glue for the many patches I still have. No tyres, but this will do for now.
In hammamet I cruised around the small touristy medina, wondering at the beautiful doors down almost impossibly narrow lanes. The sea is a gorgeous shade of turquoise here, but I didn’t feel inclined to swim preferring to first work out where I would sleep tonight. 15kms on at the town of Nabeul I was delighted to find a place at the Auberge right on the beach! At first the caretaker declined to rent me a room, but acquiesced showing me to a dorm of 7 unmade beds. He took my passport promising to return in 10 minutes but half an out later there was no sign of him so I went for a swim. Still absent upon my return I asked for him in the restaurant. Still not to be found I went in search of wifi, two hours later when he was still AWOL with my passport I began to panic. Phone calls were made and after two further increasingly uncomfortable hours he finally showed up with my passport.
One of the benefits of checking in to a room is not having to stress about finding a place sleep but it took all afternoon to get my passport back during which time I found it very hard to relax. Sitting on the beach with my frugal dinner I began to decompress, as the sun set on my first day at the Cap Bon peninsula.
