Smart Fortwo (451) Valve Guide Replacement
Переглядів 2583 місяці тому
This video shows how to replace worn valve guides. So far every cylinder head I've disassembled had worn out exhaust valve guides (regardless of engine mileage). On all those engines, I've never seen a worn out intake valve guide. So if you're replacing a head gasket, you probably want to replace the exhaust valve guides too. So far I've found a 100% exhaust valve guide failure rate. SPECIAL NO...

Fix your Briggs & Stratton Powered Lawn Mower for Under $10 (Repair Procedure)
Переглядів 132 тис.14 років тому
Due to ethanol in some gasoline, the carburetor diaphragm on a Briggs & Stratton powered lawn mower can rupture or degrade. This causes the engine to run extremely rich, a loss of power, and the exhaust blows black and/or blue smoke. In my introduction video, I showed how to identify and diagnose this problem. In this video I will go through the carburetor diaphragm replacement procedure. It is...
Fix your Briggs & Stratton Powered Lawn Mower for Under $10 (Intro/Diagnosis)
Переглядів 81 тис.14 років тому
Many briggs & Stratton powered lawn mowers are thrown away because of a simple carb problem that you can fix yourself in about 10 minutes for less than $10 bucks. Only basis simple hand tools are required. This video will show you how to identify and diagnosis this carb problem. My second video will go through the steps to repair the carb.
A real solution from a good mechanic with a lot of common sense.
No drain plug on mine, it has to be pumped out and is a pain in the butt.😊
Did you ever think it could be a "push rod or "rocker arm""? Was it that type of "knocking" noise? Our van had that timing chain noise at first and now it has a "knocking" (louder noise) which is at idle; but, the "knocking" noise comes and goes as we drove it. We quit driving the van until we can get a mechanic to look at it? Just curious if the "tap-tap-tap" noise increased to a "knocking"noise?
😂😂 priceless...... I wrote my first message at 7.00; within 20 secs you referred to my last message.. sorry!
Is it worth running the car for a few minutes to warm up the oil?
I have a 92 Corvette. Rough idle issue. I replaced the IAC and reset it. For a while it was running great now it is acting up every now and again surges up and down. It is a strong Runner outside of having that issue at a stop light and although I did not test it I do not believe it is optispark. Do you have any suggestions what it might be. Thank you, Ray
When I first bought my C4 it ran okay, but idled like it had a performance camshaft. Took the Optispark apart and found corrosion inside the distributor cap. If you've never worked on the Optispark, there's a good chance that's where the problem is located. Yes, it's a pain in the ass to work on, but that's a good place to start.
I appreciate the reply, before I start ripping it down to the optispark. I did a diagnostic check with the on board computer. It pulled up a couple of codes two of them was the 02 census and the other throttle body sensor I checked, it was a weak signal I change that out first and then checked 02 and sure enough one of the wires on the driver side was burnt from the exhaust. I am going to reset the IAC when I get everything put together. I will let you know my findings. Hopefully it works out, if not I'll have to dig deeper to the opti. Thanks
thanks for the magnet trick buddy
I use an electric pump
How does it handle with the rear tires straight, I like it
I found no difference in how the car handles or drives down the highway. Just as stable as always!
@@Arizonaperfect Less tire wear... I just put on new rear tires on mine and when I see the camber I'm like I feel sorry for those new tires... I'm try to do this over the winter. OH yea,,, Any issues at the alignment shop? I know the machine has a predefined values
@@MrMr123 This modification does not change the alignment. Steering wheel is still straight. I wouldn't spend the money on an alignment. It's really not necessary.
Hey, Will! Are you sire you didn't change that Smart Car into a Fiat 500?!
Ha!!! I have both a 2012 Smart car and 2012 Fiat 500 Prima Edition. Both fun in there own quirky way.
Hey, Will! You start out with #3, but your end product is a Panda?
Did you use JB weld to close it up? Or actually weld it?
I used a mig welder to hold the pipe in place. Don't think JB Weld would survive the heat.
Mine was smoking like crazy but also coolant coming out the exhaust so I'm pretty sure it's the gasket
Good useful video, and thanks for posting it.
Thanks for your video
Thanks bro, your video helped me a lot.
The other option is quite easy. Based on what you said about jacking up rear of car and it makes it worse, you can jack up the front end of the car and make it better. Doesnt have to be on stands, tilt the car back on a trolley jack to get more oil out then lower again. It's worth checking the condition of the drain bolt with the built in gauze filter. Mine was degrading in the plastic like bonded area of the gauze causing bits to flake off so I replaced it. They can be fitted super tight though which is a bit annoying.
It doesn't help to jack up the front of the vehicle. The drain hole location is in the center of the oil pan and about 1/2 inch off the bottom of the oil pan. So jacking up the vehicle from the front, back, or from either side make the ability to drain the old oil completely gets worse. The only way to get all the old oil out is to use a vacuum oil extractor. FYI: The reason the oil pick up/drain hole was placed in the center of the oil pan is so there is no oil starvation during acceleration, deceleration, and cornering. The oil drain plug is part of the oil pickup system for the engine oil pump.
@@Arizonaperfect Ah right, maybe front or rear tilt can a get a bit more out then if it sloshes the oil around. I didnt tilt for my last oil change, left it as it was. I got about 3.5 litres old out/new in. My Smart book says approximately 3.7litre capacity. so I could be having the 200ml old oil left in. I would think then that this is deliberate design for the oil pick up to avoid heavy contaminent/sludge in the very bottom of the sump in an engine that has not been looked after or serviced regularly?
@@Smart451-ut6df I agree with you on the reason for the oil pick up is a 1/2 inch up from the bottom. I think they should have put a conventional drain plug and we could all skip this issue.
1992 optispark redesign
Wow I appreciate these items you mentioned. Sounds like what I am having. Sounds like the noise coming from the engine bank closest to the front grill. Will check these easy items first. It has around 190,000 miles on it. Will come back to your website to tell what it was. thanks Phil
I don't understand how there was no recall on these cars for this part.
There has to be a safety issue before the government can force GM to recall for this issue. In this situation, the vehicle gives warning so the owner can fix the car. GM could issue an extended warranty or issue a Customer Satisfaction Notification, but they're not required to. There is no question in my mind that this was a faulty design and GM should have taken care of their customer with a fix for this issue. Unfortunately GM did not do that and now the cars are too old for any type of class action lawsuit.
Almost the worst video I have ever seen.
i have looked everywhere (3 hardware stores) for a metal pipe skinny enough to fit. where did you get yours?
I used 1/4 inch soft copper tubing. It comes on a roll and it is easily straightened to go into the dipstick opening.
@@Arizonaperfect ok that is very helpful to know, thank you. I did see a roll of this at Menards and wondered if it would straighten out. i’ll be sure to buy that now.
I was able to take off the bolt with the alternator on. I lowered the engine but not completely. I'm having a hard time finding the other bolts
I wonder what opti he used for replacement.
I purchased my Optispark from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. It comes with a lifetime warranty. It's been over a year since I did the modifications and the car runs perfect. No issues from the Optispark system. GM was so close to getting it right, unfortunately they came up a little short!
Nice video, hadn’t thought about that weep hole trick. Wife’s car is 95’ Z28 T56 conv with 12K on the clock.
Great Video !What brand of Optispark did you use ?
I bought my Optispark from O'Reillys Auto Parts. The price was good and it has a lifetime warranty. So far, I've had no issues with the ignition system. The car runs great!
Great... now I have to get one of these.. LOL How long is that copper pipe and what width ? UPDATE: Got a pump by Amazon, with a copper pipe. And a filter (Blueprint) and oil.
Could u send a link? I can't find it. + is the pipe long enough?
The vacuum source i use is on the left side of the intake manifold. It uses a vacuum tee but i no longer use EGE and secondary air . Since i have the MSD cap and rotor i have the check valves and vent hose. I run an electric water pump to so i no longer use the weep hole on the water pump.
Great idea. MSD does sell a updated cap and rotor with a vent hose for the non vented distributors.
I did this mod to my 94 this week. Hope to get some long life out of it. Thanks!
Did your opti fail? I have a 94 and I think my opti is going out
@@kylestolfo4695 yes, died, wouldn't start again and gave a code for optispark. Check your codes.

How about a video of that red Omni GLH in the background? I used to have a black 1985 GLH and I miss that sleeper.
That was a survivor car. 100% original car I bought new in March 0f 1985. It was a 1985 GLH turbo without air conditioning. Ended up selling it o a collector for a good price about two years ago.

Great attention to detail here. My ribs are cracked in the middle and I am going to use your welding method to address them. I may do the end bracket as well but for simplicity I will probably opt for a speed clip Again outstanding work!!
Wow! I have an 88' which doesn't come with the Optispark but man wanted to understand the issues surrounding it. Gotta tell you this was a very good idea. But, how would it work with a closed system to collect the moisture. Maybe install a small catch-can with a drying agent in it? Maybe silica beads? Or maybe, just leave the third (top) line off, using only the bottom lines and route the lines from a vacuum source and dump it into the plenum? Thoughts?
I'm not sure how well my iPhone microphone picked up the sound after the muffler modification. If some does the muffler modification, please comment back on how you like it. Thanks, Arizonaperfect.
This is great. Where are you located? Seriously may go get this from harbor freight
I live in Lake Havasu City Arizona.
MSD already makes a wayerproof optispark
I wonder if it’s still holding
It's been a year since I did the repair and it is holding perfectly. I don't anticipate any problems. It is stronger now than when it left the factory. It was a bad design from GM right from the get go!
Omg thank yooou!!!
