New PB & Side-by-Side Lap Comparison | Sonoma | July 3, 2024
Some friend and I went to Sonoma Raceway this week for an unusual Wednesday track day. I managed to set a new PB in the 3rd session, despite 90°F ambient temperatures. The rest of the day was too hot to go any faster, with temps climbing into the 100s.
I also show a comparison against my previous best lap. I gain throughout the lap and end up losing most of the advantage in the final turn, T11. On my previous PB, I dropped down to 2nd gear and had more grip and power to accelerate out. Typically 3rd gear is roughly similar in pace, but I think due to the conditions, I got punished for staying in 3rd. I gained significantly in T6 and T10, where I can now maintain higher speeds. Still some more speed to find in T1 and T10, as those are high-speed corners that demand a lot of confidence.
As for oiling, I’m running a smaller overfill here than normal-trying to see how much I can lean on the extra capacity of the prototype Verus pan (first iteration still) instead of relying on that plus an overfill. I saw a slightly bigger drop in T2 than last time, but it is still pretty reasonable. This was more like a 0.3-0.5 L overfill instead of my previous PB where I had 0.5-0.75 L over as measured on the dipstick.
Thanks to Elaine and @studiousGR86 for the great cover photo!

My second time at Buttonwillow and first with the 86 Challenge Stock Class setup. This was a joint event our Southern California sister time trial series, 86 Cup. I made some setup changes, swapping the 14mm BRZ rear sway bar with the stock 15mm sway bar from the GR86. While it’s a small difference, sway bar stiffness is proportial to the diameter to the 4th power, so it’s a 30% increase in sti...

VERUS to the rescue again!
Kinda sad that Sub/Toy isnt doing anything about this extremely bad problem that these motors have, but major props to you, and the various collaborators and Verus Eng. on this project. Appreciate you, your guys' hard work, and the R&D and science that is so obviously going into a labor of love for the platform and community. You rock!
Fantastic research! Question: is this solution compatible with after market headers? I’m new to the BRZ/86 platform and am considering it for HPDE duty. The tracks I run are clockwise tracks with lots of high speed and/or long right turns, e.g. Road Atlanta, Barber.
Thanks! Currently we haven’t tested with aftermarket headers and Verus hasn’t scanned any AFAIK, so still TBD.
@@900BRZ Thx for that update. Hopefully Versus can take that into consideration. Appreciate what you guys are doing! 👍
@maintenancethrottle thank you!
love the effort here, much appreciated
Always great to see the BRZ86 in action! 💪🏼🏁 btw do you think 5w 30 ultra platinum pennz oil would help? Southern driving and track days. Just got a 24’ BRZ86 and that baffle you’re testing sounds like a plan. 🤔💪🏼🏁
I would not hesitate to run 5w30 ultra platinum over factory oil! Thanks!
@@900BRZ ok nice the new 2024 white ZD8 should take well to it. Again down south lol Maybe after 1000 miles I’ll run that oil 🏁💪🏼 keep up the great content for the BRZ86/GR86 🇺🇸🇯🇵👍
Is this issue more concerning if you track it, if the car is used for daily driving how much of a risk does this pose
For daily driving, just make sure your oil level is at the full mark on the dipstick and check the level every other refuel.
I’m getting into track days in the SE region. This will help immensely thank you 900BRZ and Verus!
Nice improvement in spite of the 30 degree higher temperature! How do you feel about taking turn 11 in 2nd vs. 3rd gear? Looks like minimum speed was about the same and you were able to accelerate quicker in 2nd, but with the gear change the speed across the line seemed about the same. As for the GoPro setting, I think linear looks better. Really helps to get a better sense of what’s in front of the car and the reduced fisheye is nice. I’ll be going to Sonoma for the first time ever in October. Really looking forward to driving a big time track like this!
I looked some more at my data after uploading this video. Looks like 2nd is strictly better. I was using 3rd all day but when I compared to my previous track day, there was not a single lap where I beat any hot lap where I used 2nd. Next time, I should definitely try using 2nd again. Thanks for the feedback on the camera angles! Enjoy your Sonoma track day-it’s such a great track! Get your braking done early through T10 so you can get back on throttle to stabilize the car and don’t lift mid-corner!
@escargod
Great to hear. This should be more than enough for a street driven car. It really makes me want to get a BRZ, again.
Love the side by side, and the commentary text bubbles are informative as always. Congrats on the PB!
Thank you!
How do you fix this?
Watch the following videos in the series 🫶
@@900BRZ I did I may get it I'm getting the GR 86 and I'm in Maine so there's no tracks nearby but doesn't seem like a bad idea anyway
@@900BRZ just earned a sub
For now on the street, you should be good with the stock setup. Just check the oil level frequently and the powertrain warranty should have you covered if you are unlucky.
@@900BRZ sounds good I am picking one up
Nice driving! I hope to get out there one day, want to start getting out sometime next year. I imagine I'll be a little overwhelmed the first few times I start lol.
That’s natural, everyone starts there 👍
So watched oil pressure. Dipped to 46-ish one time. That’s totally acceptable. I hit that same pressure in my 2018 brz race car on that same turn. What’s all the fuss about? My 2022 gr86 is two yrs old. Tracked 19 times. Balls out! No issue. Just a mod for vendors to sell for a problem that has a .000004% chance of happening.
This car has the prototype pan I’m helping develop with extra oil capacity
They just need to also come out with a proper aftermarket dip stick so there is more consistency in regards to balance between safety and aeration. At a minimum, I hope they satisfy RS4 Tire levels of grip on 225.
Is this car boosted? Why do we hear “turbo whine” on load? So interesting, I’ve never heard that on a boxer before. Where is that coming from?
Stock engine (no boost). FA24 has a decent amount of intake noise, and he has an extra microphone under the hood for intake noises.
@@TimurIskhodzhanov I know about the mic. I drive a FA24 BRZ as well. I’ve disabled fake sound and so as this man. Just curious what’s causing the whine at high RPMS, it’s very distinctive. Very turbo
Timur is correct. I don’t have any mic in the cabin so you can’t hear ASC even though it’s still enabled. You’re hearing intake and cam sounds.
What are impressions of v1 oil pan so far? Can't wait for the final product!
Still happy with it. I think for SX2s, it solves the issue. I think the next iteration will have even better performance and hopefully will be well-suited for 200tw.
Nice driving and lap comparison!
Thanks!
I like the linear field of view better, much more realistic without the fisheye distortion of wide angle. The split-screen display to compare the 2 laps is really good. Interesting to watch. I hit the pause bar (space bar) many times. If you have time, could you tell me how you synced the 2 videos and how accurate do you think they are synced to each other? Looks pretty darned accurate to me but I can't really tell what you did. Can't tell if you did it by eye with a visual reference or if you had some more electronic way of doing it.
Thanks for the comment-interesting to have some early mixed feedback on the angles. If you want to nerd out more on the comparison, here’s a screenshot of the data, where you can see I built a big advantage and then lost it in T11: drive.google.com/file/d/11BA7aJFwnsWS1fxrcSezrPgkuw0MtwWB/view?usp=sharing I synced initally by GPS, but because I’m using the a 10 Hz Aim Solo 2, it’s actually not accurate enough. I ended up re-syncing it by hand based on the the reference of the Sonoma banner on the wall on the right side of the start-finish straight.
FWIW, I took the timing off the more accurate 25 Hz Racebox Mini that’s on my dash now but only available in the July 3rd track day, so wasn’t able to use that to sync the videos.
@@900BRZ Ok, the banners on the wall, I see 'em. Thanks! 3:04 Oops, yeah it's me, BioCosmic**Dust. Thanks again.
I've never driven Sonoma so I can't say, but at my home track (Ridge Motorsports Park), I feel like narrow gives a much more honest impression of the eay the track looks when you're actually driving it.
Interesting, I’ve never even tried Narrow for motorsports. Will have to give it a go.
@@900BRZ wait, didn't you say you used narrow for this one? I might mean normal.
I used Linear for the new lap and Wide for the old one. Narrow is one step narrower than Linear haha
@@900BRZ oops. I think I'm using linear, then.
@grippgoat okay cool, right hand side of the video 🤝
Niiice and smooth driving!!! Congrats on the new PB! 🎉🎉
Thanks!
Have you replaced any drivetrain bushings? Theres this strange gear whine I'm hearing over the engine.
Nope. I think you’re hearing the cams/intake. I mic’d the engine bay and it’s a little whiney.
Really enjoying the content! Just got my gr86 a few weeks ago (neptune 2.0 premium) and am looking forward to the Verus oil pan when it's released. Added a radium dual catch can pretty soon after purchase to have a good reference of oil and engine health from the start. Thanks to everyone who I've read on any forum or other outlet saying "buy one" to a 86 or brz, good call. Keep up the good work man!
Awesome, congrats on the new 86! Yeah even though it’s a bit of maintenance to empty the catch cans, I think it’s nice to have an idea how much you’re collecting. Btw, I’ve found the best way to empty it is to suck it out of the dipstick with this syringe: www.amazon.com/dp/B07SMSGWNR
I like the wider field of view better for the camera, but I think it's just due to the sky being overcast on that day. Much less contrast between interior and exterior of the car.
Interesting-I feel like maybe you get a better sense of the balance on the car when it’s wider, but it’s a little easier to see the references on the track when it’s linear. Thanks for the comment!
Absolute Gigachad. Your work here will definitively shut down any and all debate regarding the root cause of why FA24 engines sometimes grenade themselves on track. There will be no further shade tree bits of wisdom that will ever have any credibility after what you have done here. Subaru and Toyota should *pay* you for the confidence that you have inspired in their products - the issue is unlikely related to excessive RTV (thank God) and most importantly it is SOLVABLE; you have demonstrated this with a fairly high degree of confidence. Consider me very interested in Varus Engineering's product, once it is finalized. However, I do not track my GR86 (at least not yet) and would be hesitant to do anything that would void the warranty. So, while I definitely do want this, I would either need assurances Re: warranty or would otherwise just overfill by 0.5 L and continue to drive the car on the street as though it were a Prius going to church on Sunday (j/k). Liked, subscribed, notifications enabled. I'm interested in all your future testing results and hope you gain all the fame and notoriety that you deserve! 😃 P.S. - For those reading this comment, PSA to replace your PCV valve every 30k miles. These engines have inherently higher crank pressures and need this more than most.
Thanks for the donation and comment! I think a small overfill like you mentioned or even just being super vigilent about checking the oil level and keeping it at or slightly above the full dot is good enough on the street. Any reliability issue given that formula absolutely should be covered under the warranty. Once your warranty expires, I’m confident there will be multiple options for pans on the market given where we’re at now!
Thank you for all the hard work you are doing for the community. ❤
Very nice 🏁 BRZ86 💪🏼🛞💨💨💨
Nice details. A lot of hard work 👏
are you running baffle with overfill? the pressure seems pretty stable, or might be the fact of less right turns
Yeah running the first version of the high capacity baffle with a small overfill 1/3-1/2 liter. Pressures look good so not adding more oil!
Nice lap! Shame about 5-6
Beautiful! Love to see it. 😁
Great drive Brian!!!
No oil pressure drops! Are you running the Verus experimental oil pan?
Yeah, I’m still running the same pan from the last video in the oil pressure series. It’s working great and I’m thinking the next iteration will be even better.
@@900BRZ Heck yeah! Thanks for all the efforts with testing!
@@900BRZ Is this in combination with an overfill?
Small overfill, probably 1/3-1/2 liter
@@900BRZ Sweet, looks like the issue is essentially fixed.
Surprised they let you out on track with a cracked front windshield.
I’m not aware of this as an actual safety issue given modern windows are laminated from multiple layers of glass. Open to being proved wrong though.
whats your intake setup? doesnt sound stock.
Description: GR Performance exhaust.
It just sounds different because I have a mic in the rear and one in the engine bay and I’m mixing them.
Not the exhaust note, the induction note. He had a mic in the engine room, explains why.
Ah that explains it. Thank you.
@@900BRZMind sharing some details on your audio/video setup? Mic location, specific mics, audio recorder? I’ve been working on doing a similar setup with 2 mics using Rode VideoMicros. My exhaust mic gets pretty good audio but my intake one just picks up mostly engine/injector noise.
Great effort!! Any word on the availability of the new engine baffle?
Verus has a new video with a first look and updates: ua-cam.com/video/DIMl-jgNzZM/v-deo.htmlsi=dQS4q9nXBbgTp7zr At this point timing is still ASAP but nothing specific. We’ll be testing soon.
@@900BRZ Many thanks!
Awesome awesome driving!!!
Thank you!
Are the outside shoulders of your tires getting worn at a much higher rate than the inside? Im running over -3 in the front with coilovers and am still finding i need more, probably closer to -4, to even the tire wear. I am running some sticky 200tw though.
More spring rate? What tires are you running?
Yeah -2.5 deg of camber front and -1.5 deg is not really enough even on SX2. Definitely have excess shoulder wear. In practice my alignment is not quite as those limits (set by the Stock class rules) so I want to change my setup slightly to actually max it out. -4 deg is not unusual for this platform on 200 tw.
I run even wear at -4. On RCE T2s 7k square.
Couple random questions: do you think the GR86 premium duckbill meaningfully reduces lift at high speeds or is it just a cosmetic enhancement for you? Also, do you daily the SX2s? If so, how do you like them? Im curious as to how they compare to max performance summer street tires like the PS4s. I've heard they're a step below other 200tw options like the RS4, but I wonder how they compare to top end street/daily oriented tires.
Ducktail: I do believe this increases high speed stability and I think it’s worth adding. Basically everyone in my track group believes it’s functional. SX2: yes I daily them but I don’t drive the car on a regular commute since I WFH. They have stiffer sidewalks than the PS4 and can handle heat on track much better. RS4 or V730 should be significantly grippier and also handle heat well. Only issue on street for SX2 is they have way less grip than PS4 in the wet. So you just have to leave a little extra margin. At Laguna in the wet, PS4 are probably 2 seconds a lap faster. Overall SX2 are a great tire for learning with approachable on-limit behavior and they’re totally fine to run on the street. And cheap!
@@900BRZ glad to hear it on the ducktail and the SX2s. I'm currently running Yokohama v601s on my BRZ and loving them, but I'm always trying to get a better understanding of the niche each tire fills. Do you think you'd choose a different tire if it weren't for the SX2 being the spec tire for the socal 86 cup or whatever it's called?
Yeah I’m interested to try out a v730 or RS4. Would probably try v730 with more camber all around. Also will likely move to a class that allows coilovers next year so that will make grippier tires more controllable.
Heyo!!! New Video guys!
Just an onboard this time!
so...is there any update on the oil pan baffle? looking to purchase a new BRZ soon and might be tracking on a sticky tire.

@@900BRZ perfect timing!
Would love to see some data on these cars at a track like Willow Springs which consists of almost entireley sweeping long rights
Yeah hopefully we’ll get some test data from there on the next iteration.
I've been considering a BRZ or a GR86, it would be my first choice, but haven't committed vs other cars due to the pressure drop problem. I would now not hesitate with the addition of this new pan/baffle.
As always great research and great video @900BRZ
So, if we just drive halfway normal and don’t track it we should be good? That’s good 😮💨. I was almost going to not buy a BRZ because of this issue.
I think you’re good in that case. Check the oil level frequently.
@@900BRZ ok, thanks 👍. This video was very informative. Definitely helped me finalize my decision 🙂.
AMAZING work, thank you!!!!
Well done...I'll be following closely and will be purchase the product when its ready for production.
also question with using a thicker oil have you ran a oil pressure test with the oem ow-20
Others have and have reproduced pressure drops. Same without the use of an oil cooler. My testing with the previous engine was with 5W30 as well.
want to buy a brz but cant justify buying a car with such a huge issues as a track car that cant go to the track???
Subaru of America has a reassuring statement for you lol: "The FA24 engine is designed to perform within a wide set of tolerances for road use, and the Subaru BRZ is designed as a road car. Race cars are specially modified to be used for race conditions."
@@900BRZ Toyota sells the fucking car with a nasa race club membership what silly a goober
@@900BRZ and “track tuned suspension” marketing good
@stevenyerry2209 Yeah also their release video was at my local track Thunderhill 🤦♂️
Will this oil pan have a return from turbo?
Not as of yet but maybe it should.
