Sonoma - 86 Challenge Round 9 - 1:56.150
We enjoyed perfect weather for Round 9 of 86 Challenge and I was able to best my previous time by almost 2 seconds. Stock Class competition was fierce and I’ve got work to do to get back on the podium!
I also tried out Ray-Ban Meta glasses for onboards. Mini review: they only take 3-minute videos, so it’s pretty limiting for on-track action, but it’s as close as you can get with off-the-shelf products to the F1 style driver’s eye view. Unfortunately, it’s a little tight under my helmet and gives me a headache. Overall, it’s a fun-if expensive-experiment.

Hot Laps in SW20 MR2 Racecar
Переглядів 4792 місяці тому
Time for something a little different. I got to drive my friend Svilen’s NASA E2/ST5 racecar at Buttonwillow after crewing for him in an endurance race this weekend. It was an awesome experience to drive a dedicate track car, with a full safety system, high grip Maxxis RC-1 tires, MCS suspension, and aero (just hood vents and a low angle-of-attack rear wing). It was my first time driving a mid-...

86 Challenge Round 8 Oct 5, 2024 Not my best 86 Challenge performance, but a fun first time running the reverse layout Thunderhill West. Ended up P4 but feel like I could have gone significantly faster if I put it all together. Also collected some interesting data about the V2 Verus high capacity oil pan. We also had 2 drivers running the V3 pan and were able to compare the performance between ...

In this video, I install a niche product from @hachielectronics: A harness and switch to disable Voice Control, Source, and Call buttons on the GR86/BRZ steering wheel. This is a plug-and-play, totally reversible mod that disables the buttons at the flip of a switch. @hachielectronics developed this product after I and several other track folks complained about accidentally triggering Voice Con...

We’ve taken a few months off in the summer due to the heat, but we were back in action over the weekend with a joint event with 86 Challenge and SoCal 86 Cup at Buttonwillow. This was my first time on the reverse configuration and my 2:13.722 was good enough for P2 in 86 Challenge and also P2 in SoCal 86 Cup. I’m continuing to run the same oil pan as was discussed in my last video (Verus calls ...
New PB & Side-by-Side Lap Comparison | Sonoma | July 3, 2024

Some friend and I went to Sonoma Raceway this week for an unusual Wednesday track day. I managed to set a new PB in the 3rd session, despite 90°F ambient temperatures. The rest of the day was too hot to go any faster, with temps climbing into the 100s. I also show a comparison against my previous best lap. I gain throughout the lap and end up losing most of the advantage in the final turn, T11....

First time at Laguna in dry conditions. My pace is pretty good until turn 5-6 and then I recover by exit of 9. If I can fix those next time out I can get into the 1:46s based on comparison of data to other drivers in stock class. This was good enough for P5 out of 12 in 86 Challenge Stock class today. My second time at Buttonwillow and first with the 86 Challenge Stock Class setup. This was a joint event our Southern California sister time trial series, 86 Cup. I made some setup changes, swapping the 14mm BRZ rear sway bar with the stock 15mm sway bar from the GR86. While it’s a small difference, sway bar stiffness is proportial to the diameter to the 4th power, so it’s a 30% increase in sti...

Thank you Great information.✅
Crazy how your average hobbyist is able to capture such data with off the shelf tools. 50 years ago this would have cost millions.
brz900.. 'El Santo de Velocidad'
I think that pressure problem is bc the way the oil sits in the oil pan. seems like the problem happens every time you're going over a crest or a bump. maybe when the gravity is not pushing the oil down it makes a bubble in the oil pickup.
maybe a way to solve that problem is with a deeper oil pan
Will this issue affect the VB WRXs with the same FA24 engine?
Stupid question, but have you tried just adding oil? Stary at an extra half qt, then a full, then maybe even 1.5qt extra. Obviously watch the oil pressure, it could just aerate instead of helping
What a road car needs is a dry sump system to keep the oil supply constant and allow the oil to de-foam in the tank before being pumped into the oil galleries.
I think a Tomei oil sump buffle should help quite a bit
We thought it would too but it doesn’t do much ua-cam.com/video/35-hf0SKzNg/v-deo.htmlsi=rdB4bUmFy82zIIUW
@900BRZ thanks for you reply 👍
Forgive the question, is this going to be usable on the gt86 as well by any chance?
Amazing work to create this content. Thank you.
Flat oil pan test? Old School but good... Maybe It's the solution If the fishing range is the problem. The anti-shaking barrier only works if the sump is low enough, I could advise you to look for the solution in the boxer engines of the alfa romeo 33, in itself the FA20-24 is just the evolution, but even that engine has the same problem if you ride on the track or mountain passes, in addition the boxer engine is quite famous for getting drunk or for filling the oil passages after years ... In my opinion it is solved a lot with a flat and anti-shake cup with The floating panel, however, because it is fixed can still keep the part empty. At least I had done xpsibe I had solved the problem. Old solutions that still work well today, that was also used on BMWs. 😉 It seems to me that in any case in the race the pressure was constant ... Perhaps also due to the temperature?
Are you using accusump?
Nope, just the Verus prototype pan from the last oil pressure series video.
@@900BRZ looks like it works pretty good. Waiting for production version!
Yeah working great! Still no ETA but excited to get it out there!
In the meta glasses vid did you use the same audio as the first view?
what app are you running on apple carplay
It’s a lap timer app my friend is writing and I’m helping beta test. Will share more info when he’s ready!
is the allignment out or something? looks lazier turning right than left
I noticed a little understeer which I attributed to the aero balance, so maybe it's because the avg speed of the right-hand corners tends to be higher at BW and that would accentuate the aero balance even more.
Great race!
are you using the prototype oil pan?
Yup, using the oil pan I discussed in the previous oil pressure series video. I called it v0.1 but Verus calls it v2.
@@900BRZ what a big improvement!! very nice!!
wish this car came with a 8000rpm limiter. i just wana hear it scream
Would be worse for oil pressure though!
I know everybody's watching that blue wavy line, but holy shit you're flyin dude! 👏👏
Hahah thanks!
Solid oil pressures all around. Great lap!
Thanks for watching!
huh, why did you switch over to the 86 coilovers and sway bar in the rear? And did you find an improvement? (I've got a BRZ)
The BRZ is a bit more understeery than the GR86. Stiffening up the rear by transplanting GR86 parts gives you a more neutral balance and less body roll - double win. The fastest stock class car around sonoma is a brz with a GR86 rear sway bar.
Yeah, it’s what @404nobrakes said. In 86 Challenge Stock Class, we can swap to other factory parts, so I wanted to experiment with reducing some understeer by making the rear end stiffer. Also, with the GR86 spring rate, the ride frequency is slightly higher than the front, which is called “flat ride” vs the “pitch ride” in the BRZ. The idea is the rear has to have a slightly faster rate to settle at the same time as the front when hitting a bump, otherwise the car will pitch up as the front reacts, then back down as the rear reacts.
@@900BRZ Got a guide and list of part numbers? :) I've been tempted to at least install that rear sway bar, and have heard that alone is a decent upgrade.
@CDecker33 Yeah I’d recommend it. I’ll put something together about the build!
I always enjoy watching your races/videos. Thanks.
Great driving! BTW, how's oil pan development is going?
Very good lines. Let me guess a 103db day. Never drive there at a 92db day. Waste of money
Thanks! We actually don’t have any problems with sound on 92 db days so we can save some cash
when are you going to put it out in the market? thanks
It’s up to Verus. I don’t have an exact ETA unfortunately.
@@900BRZ oww.. ok Thanks..:) btw do you think, its better than the baffled pan used by the GR cup? and do you know where I can get the GR cup baffled pan? Thanks....
What does it look like with a 1L overfill on stock setup?
We still see pressure drops with that setup, but it’s better than the regular fill for sure.
Is the 1L overfill recommended on a street car as well?
Probably not that big. I would do 0.5 L
Nice driving 😃
Nice, it looks you had fun with the MR2.
So much fun!
Thats a weird looking BRZ
This is so sick! I always loved the SW20 growing up. Congrats on the PB
Thanks! Yeah super fun car!
something must be wrong. you're driving a vehicle with good oil pressure through turns. all is not well with the world. /s
900MR2 wen
this certainly isnt a brz anymore
It’s BRZ adjacent haha
This is great. I’m a new driver and I think this pan will address the problem for me as well. I track about once a month and daily drive my GR86. No plans to go with a high-grip set up.
Awesome, yeah hope you are able to get one soon!
I own a ‘23 GR86, and I couldn’t be happier to see you all putting in so much badass work to get to the bottom of this. Happily will donate. I just installed some OEM Brembos from first gen 86, plan to do coilovers, brake fluid and brake pads upgrades, and maybe Pilot Sport 4S tires for an easy HPDE day at Sonoma in the future. Your solutions with Verus would make me feel way more comfortable as an amateur who daily’s this car in the Bay Area. Will buy it for sure!❤
Thank you, hope Verus can get something to market soon. See you at the track!
this is so inspiring and comforting. i’m a bit frustrated that we have to deal with this problem on such a new platform but its such an amazing car i think all this effort will be worth it
Agree completely!
i really want to get a gr86 as my first car and get into racing but the rtv issue n this is making me really hesitant. i dont see another car i could reasonably afford to fit my needs either n i’m not sure an older car will last me through college. hopefully this issue will be resolved soon
I think the RTV issue is not that big of a deal. Very few cars have enough blockage to cause a problem.
Just curious, how much more capacity of oil does that prototype Verus oil pan add?
The one I’m running adds about 1L extra
@@900BRZ Thank you for the update and sharing your track adventures. I’m pleased to see much more stable oil pressures throughout. I’m looking forward to Verus releasing their pan, hopefully in the near future 🤞🏽
Just watched the whole oil pressure series and I can't wait for the hopefully final update. Im in college for engineering right now so I have loved every second of this. Also, second gen gr 86 is my dream car right now. Once I get some money it'll be my first big purchase. Thank you for all you work!
Awesome, glad to hear you’ve enjoyed the journey so far!
Interesting moment at 6:45 where you wound up the steering wheel to the left too much during the recovery (~180º, should have stopped at ~90º), and the oversteer briefly turned into understeer and then the front "grabbed" and pulled you into the corner.
Pro tip: after you slid the car at 2:35, the RR tire was overheated, so you could have anticipated oversteer in 3:08, and take T1 more conservatively
Yeah interesting. I was carrying a but more slip angle and it was the second of two consecutive hot laps so probably would have made sense to be more conservative there anyway. Interesting point about having a little buffer of recent corners to take as input into the next corner.
@@900BRZ If you have LFS, try driving the XRT and/or FXO cars for 10 hot laps in a row while watching tire temps (F9). After just a few laps you'll need to start managing the outside tires. I did a bunch (hundreds?) sprint races in those cars, it was an eye opening experience. Wish it was as easy to monitor tire surface temperatures IRL!
Thanks 900BRZ. I just installed mine following your instructions. Worked like a charm!
Nice!
Your engine setup sounds insane dude. 🤯 Revs significantly smoother and faster than mine. 😮
I think most of that is just from the dual mic setup with one in the engine bay. You get a lot more intake sound this way.
@@900BRZ Time for a K&N intake ;)
Im considering buying brz and I just learned there are some issues. Bit later found this video. Amazing. Cant wait for the product!
Nice driving! Looks like a blast! And all the readouts are looking good too.
Seeing the Oil Pressures barely come down during those right hand turns put a smile on my face. Good times are ahead!
Glad to see you are having Verus design a prototype truncated sump. You will be needing 2 more returns from the cam covers as too much oil stays in the heads during operation. Need to make a different header so there is more clearance for the lower portion of the truncated sump. Your data is looking much better with the new sump.
For higher grip setups/faster pace we will still have pressure drops with this pan, but it’s significantly improved from the factory setup. I would love to try oil returns from the cam covers. Painfully aware of the poor drainback performance 🫠
Hey man. Why do you use Mobil1 0W40? Thanks
TL;DR: The newish API SP formulation is cheap, readily available, >=3.5 HTHS, full synthetic, reasonable shear tolerance. At times I was doing only a single track day on a fill due to testing different parts so I needed to find a cheaper alternative to options like Motul.
@@900BRZ Makes sense. I used older mobil1 0w40 European car formula for same reasons but spun rod bearing in two separate 4AGE silvertops during races. Could be oil starvation in fast turns + high revs - but I have doubts regarding racing with Mobil1 0w40 since then.
Man I really want a video like this but with the gear change warning sound turned ON. Also, did your windshield break? Was it a rock or something? Really interested about some news on the oil pan.
With a mic in the engine bay and one on the rear bumper, you can’t hear anything inside the cabin. I’ve thought about adding a third mic but then you need off camera sound recording. I actually had a Zoom recorder mounted on the windshield in my Buttonwillow video but there was too much wind noise for it to be usable. Windshield broke from a rock or something. It’s not in my vision on track so I haven’t replaced it yet. News hopefully coming soon! I just need time to make another deep dive.
