Welcome to my channel and my small switching layout, Rowell Paper. I'm based in the UK and have had model railways in OO and O scale for most of my life, though I've never built a complete working layout before. I switched to US outline HO scale in 2020 and haven't looked back. I'm intending to model the Morristown and Erie Railway as soon as I have space, but for now, Rowell Paper is my main project. I'm currently filming using my Samsung A23 and Canon SX50HS DSLR, but will be looking for a more suitable upgrade soon.

This is my review of the newly released Atlas Alco RS1 Morristown and Erie 15 which has just arrived at Rowell Paper from the US. It's good, but nowhere near perfect. Apologies for the lighting on this video, I realised after filming that I hadn't got it set up properly. I've had this Athearn Ready to Roll Rock Island SD40-2 for a few years now, but have hardly ever run it. I love it, but it doesn't fit my era or location. Should I sell it or hang on to it? I've given it a run on the layout to help me decide.

Today, I'm switching out a few cars on Rowell Paper using Chesapeake and Delaware GP38-2 number 2005. Included in the switching is a covered hopper that I created the decals for, one of my favourite pieces of rolling stock. Unfortunately, the issue I had with one of the points have reappeared - I thought I'd resolved it, but I think there's a problem with a connection to the point motor as well...

@@uin12345 amazing, thank you - email sent.
Looking awesome, thanks for sharing. Dave
@davestrains6816 thanks Dave, much appreciated. I'm hoping it doesn't all go wrong at paint stage!
It’s tedious but well worth it
@PostmoderneModelWorks it has been a long process, but I've enjoyed it and it's been relaxing just sitting at the bench working away at it (apart from the many hours spent crawling on the floor looking for dropped parts).
Looking really good Jim. I've got a Conrail (patched for NS) to do and a straight NS one that I didn't know I had.
@Castlebank_Sidings thanks Andy, I'm very happy with how it's turned out so far. Definitely prevaricating over the paint though. It's always nice to find a loco you've forgotten about!
That is absolutely gorgeous .... Brilliant Work 👍
@@XBOXShawn12thman thank you, that's much appreciated!

@@SouthDown I think that's where I'm headed.... Thank you!
Lol! I have so many locomotive, and i JUST CAN'T PART WITH THEM! Hence! "So many!"😅 it sounds so nice! Smooth runner too!
@@DarkTerritory71 it is a really nice model. And I agree, it's almost impossible to part with anything!
@@jimbarrett1975 I tell my wife, "they grow on my heart!" 🤣
By comparison, I got my Lake State MP15 for $280 U.S. including shipping. I've also found that out of state hobby shops are the best place to find models of local prototypes as they are more apt to have excess stock and want to "unload" them online. I think mine came from a shop in Georgia.
@thomasdecker7631 that's a good price. I need to find a small supplier that ships internationally at a reasonable rate. The cost of postage and import duty added half as much again to the cost of the model.
Jim, if your interested Lake State 1501 is for sale "Pre-owned" from Rails of Sheffield for £119.50. Interesting as 1501 has the box surrounding the exhaust stacks.
@andyknott8148 thanks Andy, budget blown on the Alco but I'll keep an eye on that for my next pay packet if its still there. That's come on the market quick given that they were only released in December.
Yeah the shipping's got to be a killer Jim. Have you checked trainworld? I've always found them to have some of the best prices around - especially if you're not looking for "new releases"... It looks like that Atlas RS-1 with sound is $219.99 With shipping about $40?
@openeyes-411 thank you for your reply. That's a bit frustrating - I got my SW1500 from them the postage was readonable, but they didn't have the Alco listed when I was ordering. I don't think I paid duty on their delivery either. I'll keep a closer eye on their website, especially for general stock.
@@jimbarrett1975 Also how about eBay? There're a few actual authorized dealers on there that sell new equipment at good prices too - iirc Trainz is one seller. IDK how the overseas shipping goes tho. Good luck in your hunt, Charlie
@openeyes-411 it's the lottery of what's available that's the issue there. The only M&E RS1 I could find was from a seller who doesn't ship to the UK. A lot don't because of the tax, for a reason I haven't quite understood.
Just an FYI that your RS1 is loaded with the wrong sound file S0766 suitable for a U28/U30. If you have a Lokprogrammer load S0511 or S0825
@CentralJerseyRailfan oh wow, thanks for that! I don't have a programmer so I'll take it to the guy I get my decoders from. Thanks for pointing that out - the thing that I really couldn't comment on was the sound. Much appreciated.
@@jimbarrett1975 No problem. A lot of Atlas RS1s were incorrectly loaded with the wrong sound file
@@CentralJerseyRailfan cheers. Maybe they had the same guy mixing paint and loading sounds 😂 At least it's an easy fix.
Great video mate. I totally agree with what you are saying about the cost of importing. Shipping from the USA can be very expensive and add to that the import duty and it all adds up. However, it is still sometimes cheaper than buying from a UK importers as they have all that and have to make a profit!
Just need to super weather and grime it. Then it will look like a true Rock Island did back in the days of their demise.
@artied1807 that's a possibility, and a good idea - I was looking at some pictures of some today.
very nice that Sd40-2 acting as switchers..
@@tonycano3203 the problem of having a small layout but liking big locomotives! I do like running the SD40-2s.
Mega, super wondeful locomotive and Paint scheme ❤❤❤❤❤❤
@maquetedoalto too nice to let it go, I think!
That's a nice locomotive., You could paint it orange and Burdakin blue, apply a big GT noodle and be totally legit, although I can't say for sure if GTW used theirs to switch the paper spur. I think they may have used whatever power was available.
@thomasdecker7631 hmm, tempting option, I'll think about that. I need to get a bit of practice with the airbrush first. Would the six axle loco have been too heavy for the Port Huron line, or do you think they would have used them? *Edit - I've just found a photo of an SD70 on the paper spur, so weight not an issue!
@thomasdecker7631 The more I think about it, the more I like this idea - the GTW livery is great and whether they ran on the branch or not really doesn't matter.
Hi Jim. Yes the SD40-2 was one of the best & most plentiful locomotives ever produced in the US... These are quite distinctive with those "porches" - never mind the handsome livery as you say! Thing is, unless absolute fidelity to a specific prototype is what brings you the most joy, I'd say keep it - MRR'ing is full of compromises, and using a little "modeler's license" in order to run something you enjoy is certainly an option! Cheers from across the pond, Charlie
@openeyes-411 thanks Charlie! I think I'll hang onto it, for the time being at least. I do enjoy running it, and it'll look nice in a cabinet eventually. Unless I need the finance for something else, in which case I'll be in the same dilemma 😂
Keep hold of it until I can afford to buy it off you lol

@jimbarrett1975 well you know where to find me, though not until after my pay rise in September 😅😅😅

The last thing you want is to turn your hobby into another task-oriented pressure-cooker - sometimes life gets busy so you can’t be down on yourself if progress stalls a bit. Enjoy playing trains a little and looking at the things you’ve achieved already, more progress will come eventually!
@ianroberts6929 thank you - all very true. I do put myself under unnecessary pressure to do stuff sometimes. Sound advice, which I will follow.
@@jimbarrett1975 well I learned the hard way - it got to the point where my modelling “to do list” looked exactly the same as my lists at work and I started to put real pressure on myself. The result was that I started to dread going to the railway room so I had to fundamentally change my approach!
@ianroberts6929 my trouble is I'm impatient to get everything done, and have far too many projects on the go at once. I need to manage my aspirations better and do one thing (or maybe no more than three things) at a time.
Nice to see you back on the airwaves mate. Hope you settle in to the new role and get some quality modelling time
@thebritishrailroader thanks Steve, I'm hoping that I'll get a bit more time once everything is back to a routine. I am worried I'll miss the commute though - good railfanning time!
Going forward means also having a life. There's no rush and it's all coming together. Post when you can and enjoy it.
@Castlebank_Sidings cheers Andy, once things settle down a bit I can hopefully get myself organised. My main focus needs to be on finishing a few things before I start something else!
Nice catch. Nothing says "Port Huron" like GTW and CN rolling stock. You got a good deal on them, too. Best of luck on finding a GTW Geep 9.
Hopefully I'll add a few more bits of similar stock in the future. I'm not holding out much hope of finding a GTW GP9 to be honest. I might have to settle for a GP38, or get the airbrush out.
@@jimbarrett1975 GP38/GP38-2 works, too. I saw quite a few of them on the paper spur over the years.
@@thomasdecker7631 I will see what I can find/afford....
You did well there. Cheltenham models often have Athearn Genesis freight stock cheap
Cheers Andy, I'll have a look at their website if they have it listed..
Hi I'm Walter. I use to live near the Morristown & Erie short line in NEW JERSEY. I know RS-1 M&E # 15.. The big ALCOs Centurys they had two C430s #s 16 . 17 . And there C 424s 18. 19 . . .. that's was my home town. Sadly C430s left M&E rails year 2001. Then in 2019 C424s left to 😢 .
Hi Walter, thank you for watching, and for your reply. Great to hear from someone who saw so much of the M&E fleet. I'm slowly building up my collection. I haven't visited the line yet but hope to be able to get out there at some point, and wish I'd been able to before the Alcos left. I'm planning on modeling the Cedar Knolls transload once I have the space.
Looking good Jim
Thank you!
Another great video. I have standardised my couplings but have gone for the Kadee no 5s (and variations). I know they are a bit overscale but at the moment there is only one size of 158 which sadly doesn't suit all the variables.
Thank you! After I'd filmed I swapped the couplings on all the stock on the layout for 148s or 5s, so hopefully everything will work properly now. I'm toying with cutting off the magnetic pins.
@@jimbarrett1975 I cut off all the pins as standard as I don't use them magnetically
@thebritishrailroader I will probably do the same. My original plan was to be completely hands free, but I found I enjoyed manual uncoupling so I didn't go with it in the end.
@jimbarrett1975 I am the same. I even started with manual points but I have decided to retrofit them with dcc Controlled point motors. I have done 3 of the 6 and am pleased with the results
@@thebritishrailroader I have the DCC Concepts Cobalt motors - I'm really happy with them. I've always wanted a layout with point motors, and now I have one!
Code 70? Code 75? The difference is a scale 7/16" ()11.5 mm). No one would ever know the difference without a depth mike. Looking good so far. Anxious to see the finished result.
Thank for watching, and for your comment. The main difference between code 70 and 75 track is that the 75 is chaired (British) whilst the 70 is spiked (US), so the eagle-eyed might spot a chaired rail. For those layout it's not something I'll worry about too much! It is starting to look like I might have a finished result one day - doing these videos has definitely pushed me on to make progress.
@@jimbarrett1975 Hmm... Concrete will hide a lot.
@thomasdecker7631 yes, I think so. As long as I don't mention it on social media or anything, no one will know 🙂
Looking good mate
Thank you! It's nice to start getting some ground on, I'm really looking forward to getting the final surface done, as well as the ballast. Need to start saving for a static grass applicator.
Jim, looks like they have indeed updated the chassis as I don't think either of my GP15's have a speaker housing (and I think they had filament lamps). Also interesting that they have improved the truck side frames as well.
I'm not sure whether the one you sent me is newer or older - it's side frames are definitely better than the one I have, and the fuel tank is plastic rather than metal. It will be interesting to look inside. My original may be older than I thought.
Although as you point out, it does have a speaker housing, so it must be reasonably up to date, and I think it came in a modern box.
Very nice, thanks for sharing. Dave
Thanks you for watching!
Very nice to see true Modellers going to work getting things done!
Thank you!
I have say, I was forced to look away when you removed the pin with the scalpel.
Haha, it does look a bit close, but it was sharp and there was material between the blade and my thumb. I work with a much larger knife day-to-day and have a very strict "cut away" rule - most of the time! It was much easier without the camera!
Nooooooooo bell please. Lol
The general manager of the factory instigated a 'No Bell' rule as he found sickness rates increased during each switching session.

Great video! The M&E and C&D is local to me so this is fantastic. This layout is reminiscent of the Dover and Rockaway branch. They drop off probably 8-10 of those graffiti hoppers on the line. The DRRV operates it now, formerly M&E. A lot of Morris County trackage is now operated by them. You see a lot of NJ transit power, NS, and former NS as well. The 2005 is in southern NJ currently. I can't wait to see your progress. Best of luck.
That's amazing, thanks Eric! I really got hooked on the M&E when I started looking for a shortline to model. I haven't visited yet, but I am hoping to make a trip over the Atlantic at some point soon to see it and the DRRV first hand. I have much more M&E based content to come, with a number of locomotive projects on the bench. Thanks again for watching and for your comments.

@@jimbarrett1975 Looking at it so far mate you're certainly there with it
@Castlebank_Sidings thanks Andy, that's really appreciated. Watching Boomer, amongst others, has certainly helped me to up my game. Having aspirations above my skill level was always my biggest block to progress, but I think I'm starting to bring the two together in the middle somewhere now.
