The British Railroader mentioned your channel. Switching layout videos are a favorite of mine. I see you are scratch building all of your structures? Nice.I will be watching your progress. 👍
Hi Jim, we've jumped onto your channel after seeing Steve's Sunday shout-out video where he mentioned you as well as my grandson's Dylington Model Railway channel, anyway we've subscribed and are looking forward to following your progress... Cheers James 🙂👍
@jimbarrett1975 Thank you, Jim he's very interested at the moment and is planning to build a 009 layout soon, and I'm sure he'll be filming and posting updates on his channel. We have turned off the comments for his protection due to his age. However, you can comment on the Christmas one, and if you ever want to comment, I guess you could do on here. I think he's planning to do somemore stop motion animation on his next video like he did on one of his others. Thank you again... James 🙂👍
@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY I look forward to seeing his progress. It's good to try different scales/prototypes to find what suits best, and it's all a great learning curve.
@jimbarrett1975 he's just finished a laser cut kit, which will be going on the new layout. So, in a way, he's made a start on the layout by building it ready, and he's got a few more to build. He's also got the baseboard ready, which we built together. The idea is he will be doing as much of the work on it himself 🙂👍
Amazing, thank you. I'll try to do more than just switching. Hopefully this will be a motivator to make progress. I'm planning a video on the structures at some point.
Oh my, did you start something, a CSX loco in black and gold, really !! Well yes, a Google search found that 8909 is indeed black with gold/yellow lettering, but caries 3438 in the front number boards. Are we getting close to April First ? Nope they were acquired from NS and are not yet repainted but the cab number/number board is strange. You learn things from people and never be to quick to say "that's wrong".
Cheers Andy, yes it's an NS unit, and actually an SD40-3. It was transferred to CSX in 2015 and refurbished, but stayed patched for a few months before being repainted.
Jim, I have a question: it sounds like you are using a motor to throw your points, yes? Is there an advantage to doing that - like powering the frog, that makes the added expense/ complexity worth it over using a ground-throw or a built-in spring tensioner?
The original idea of this layout was to quickly put something together to learn new skills (going well on the skills, failed on the speed). The point motors (IP Digital) are controlled via DCC Concepts wireless ESP system - it is a bit much for this small layout but once I get my bigger project under way I'll probably swap them out. I had intended to have the whole thing hands free but didn't get on with the Kadee uncoupling magnets. I've now found I enjoy manually uncoupling anyway.
Haha, the first one was recorded a week or so ago, but I've been saving it. Point is a Peco I think I may have dislodged a soldered joint when I painted the track. Annoyingly it's the only one still on foam (I replaced foam with cork apart from this point), so will be fun to re-solder.

Thank you! Yes, all structures will be scratch-built. I'll do a video about what they're based on at some point soon.
Great stuff Jim. Don’t let the bugs stop you, work through them and enjoy the ride.

Thanks James, likewise I've followed you. It's great to see there's still interest in the hobby amongst the young.

I'm another of the "The British Railroader sent me" crowd. I love that you are scratch building the industry, and look foward to seeing it take shape.

Yep, me too. Another UK modeller who knows what an SD40 is (but give me an Alco any day).
Very cool 🤠
Thank you!

I like the CSX black & gold. It's like a stealth 2.0 scheme.

You are knocking them out fast! That dead spot you have on that point is annoying. What type of points are you using? Is it only that one?
