    Well one thing is also that you didn't had access to nearly ALL songs of the past! You actually had to buy it or be lucky to hear it on the radio, maybe react fast enough to record it on tape (MC). Then again some singers like Arianna Grand do really bad music in comparsion to what they could do! Another thing that bugs me with modenr music is that it feels like at least half of the songs are about depression and whatever. What about a "Poison from Alice Cooper"? That rocks! No on makes music like this anymore! And music back then made you wanna dance or at least "feel" something positive! Check this song out: ua-cam.com/video/iNLXxDMxe18/v-deo.html If someone don't wanna dance or move by hearing this, he is brain dead! And then compare it to modern songs!

    It's an interesting debate. I am a millennial so I don't really know for sure what gen z listens to other than what popular culture seems to be, which is tiktok songs, pop music, rap, and that kind of thing. I would guess there are outliers who listen to weird things like polka and prog-metel 🤘. But for the most part, they seem to have a shockingly narrow sense of music consisting of pop basically. That's like only eating junk food. It's junk food of the mind. I'm not saying pop music is bad, but if that's all you listen to, that's telling me your taste is driven by popular culture and not so much the appreciation of composition in of itself.

    I'm a boomer from the vinyl and MTV Era. You tube gives me whatever I want and what I didn't know existed on demand. I will never go back to the stone age again. The real problem with today's popular music is greedy record companies and the talentless losers they promote as artists. Generation Z gets that.

    Some excellent points, well made. I don't agree with Rick's take on millennials vs music. I'm 56 and I've been playing videogames for 40 years and developing videogames for 35 years. Usually, every few years they get blamed for making kids more violent, or addicted but this is a new one on me. I enjoy Rick's videos but I couldn't watch this one to the end as it seemed ludicrous. I know many Millenials and Gen Zs and they are mostly into music but it's all music like Bowie, The Beatles, Nirvana, Iron Maiden, etc. It's like you said, if you want to get into music where do you start? Well, you start with the classic bands and hopefully their streaming platforms will broaden their horizons into other less well-known bands.

    Thanks for posting this. I originally clicked on this just to hear a second opinion about the orig vid. My take away was that he was dissing on video game music[Boomer - old man on top of a mountain full of sound & fury signifying nothing type of thing] I still feel like more props needs to made towards folks that make music for video games. I feel like I could ask almost anyone to name a famous singer/rapper, and they would have an answer. Same thing for a guitar player, a piano player, maybe a drummer, and also maybe a bass player, and most definitely a classical music composer. Name a famous video game music composer without looking it up online; you can't do it. And yet I think a lot of ppl, when played some music that first appeared in a video game would instantly recognize it. There's defo a disconnect between the games that we play, and the artists that make music for said games. They deserve more recognition and fame for what they do. It's not like ppl aren't hearing what they are doing... They just don't know who they are, and hence not having the idea that this is something they might be able to emulate. We need to do a better job at making the ppl who do that work more famous. And, promote ppl who are doing live performances of those works; they are out there, look them up, go see a show.

    Valid comments by you and Rick. So much music bangs on about how broken relationships and how bad life is. I think people are sick of it. "Video killed the radio star," computerised music and song writing is killing the budding songwriter and musician. Bring back the pub band. "Who let the dogs out." I need to take the dog for a walk. Is there a video on how to?

    I’m starting to think that all these record companies don’t realize how much more their music would actually reach more people (sell more) if they F’d off with DMCA’s. It would be a renaissance if people could hear songs they never even knew existed until they heard it in a UA-cam video

  • @gnu_andrew
    @gnu_andrew 6 місяців тому

    I think Rick was just using video games as an example of where there is music but you don't really take it in, because your concentration is on something else. It's background. I commented in a similar way to your second point on his video. We millennials had video games growing up but also music consumption as its own thing. That doesn't really exist any more. There isn't the same community around music as there once was. Radio is struggling and its main demographic tends to be in their 50s. The music shows of yesterday are gone. MTV pretty much no longer shows music videos last I saw. it used to be that you put your money behind your favourite artists through record sales and then watched how they fared in the charts. Now, the charts are decided by how much songs are played, and so are dominated by a small number of artists who can attract crazy numbers of listens, mainly from a minority who use streaming services constantly. Social media has also led to people being isolated in their own bubble of people who like the same music they do, so they either listen to the same limited selection that is acceptable to their social media peers or they go off on their own. Despite having all this music accessible, most explore less of it than when a greater diversity was showcased on TV & radio. It is now much easier to avoid music you don't like as well. One of the clearest examples of this is at Christmas. Decades old Christmas songs now do much better on the charts, because suddenly you have a much wider demographic of people visible, because they are playing a smaller selection of songs (Xmas favourites). The rest of the time, the taste of older generations is so diverse that their listens are lost in the noise, but when they start playing "Last Christmas" or "All I Want for Christmas Is You", it impacts on the chart and dwarfs current records. The fact that multiple 30 and 40 year old songs beat current releases at this time just show how small an audience they have. This has created a vicious cycle in that the music being created reflects its most common use as background noise in adverts & TikTok memes. Video games are actually a step up from these! This is why we end up with simple generic music that is very repetitive, because, while a song may be three or four minutes, it's not intended for listening to in full, but for a 30 second clip. I don't really get your first point. The music on such clips is still copyrighted. I think what you mean is it's less well known and feasible to be licensed for the video. Rick has spoken on blocking a lot too and I think it is actually damaging legacy catalogues by reducing the exposure younger audiences have to it. However, there are enough channels still posting such stuff - even if it eventually gets blocked - that you get memes forming around older songs. I find Gen Z have the oddest selection of 80s songs they know because they've discovered them via clips on memes. What I would say about UA-cam is that most of the videos that focus on music itself tend to be retrospectives primarily aimed at our generation and earlier (or maybe it's just that's what the UA-cam algorithm shows me)? I don't see people posting videos about new artists so much, which goes back to your second point as I discussed above. Where is the hype and chat about new artists? What I see mostly seems to be Gen Z discovering older music!

    Great points, and I agree. Regarding the phasing out of physical media, I would add to that that even when we still had to download mp3 files, some of that element was preserved in it. You had a library of these mp3s. Granted, they weren't tangible like actual physical CDs, but you still had a collection that you were attached to, and it took some effort to amass this collection.

    I hear what your saying mate but a very important thing that Gen Z musicians don't seem to get what's going on in the world in real time is the source you should be drawing lyrics from make a stand as the voice of your generation All Gen Z songs sound the same there seems to be mindset that writing about life or current affairs of the times is taboo. To give you an example read the lyrics of bob Marley they where about serious things going on but because he put the lyric to up temp vibe they come across as pleasing to ear Also every generation has certain sayings certain slangs ways to describe or say something . In the seventies many hooklines came from slang n sayings of that generation I can't get no satisfaction, get off my cloud, it's only rock n roll the stones are full of everyday sayings we used as a generation. Music is a muse for the voice of a generation to be heard . Gen Z are too busy chasing fame for sake of being famous instead of chasing there voice. U only have to look at UTube creators they just copy each other

    The problem with Rick here is that he doesn't understand how people consume and collect music as they grow a stronger interest. Music is available through means that didn't exist when Rick was a kid. Playing video games myself since I'd been a kid exposed me to so much music before I ever got a chance to buy my first record from some slim pocket money. Music literally exploded throughout the 80s and 90s. Music was officially incorporated into video games, official music tracks from official music artists and producers, music you could buy on records as well as you had it in the games. Music was that element that started to connect virtual reality with actual reality. Even watching movies helped me to develop a deeper need for intense music genres. There is a lot of going back and forth in that regard. Decades later somewhere in 2008 or 2009 an entire new genre broke lose completely immersed with the ideas from 80s and 90s video games and slasher movies, turning the way around how music and visual media connects everything. But wasn't that so in the 50s and 60s as well? Wasn't it that moment when our own parents sat in that one movie recognizing that one song to later become addicted to that one band and so on?

    Pop music today is more about setting a mood. It's boring and depressing. Today it's all about lo-fi instrumentals, a whispery female voice, and themes about mental health. Catchy hooks are out of style. Another factor is Spotify, not MTV or FM radio, is how people discover music now. The loudness wars are over. Prior to 2020, pop music was about being catchy and jumping out at you. Today, it's about keeping the mood going so that people will stream for longer. Also, GenZ doesn't have a Britney or Christina or even a Lady Gaga. Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo don't come close.

    • @niemand7811
      @niemand7811 7 місяців тому

      And so did pop music since ever. In the 50s pop music was all about teens spinning on the dance floor to driving rhythms and beats. In the 60s the overall social tone was different and pop music reflected that again. Pop music of every generation always reflects certain social tones. But no matter how different the tones were, I never knew that catchy hooks went out of style. The way you mention that pop was about being catchy and jumping at you "prior to 2020", that is something people always claim. Before 2010 music was this. Before the 2000s came along music was that. That's a decades old confusion older generations come up with when they lose touch with current pop music.

      Does GenZ revere Billie Eilish in the way GenX did Prince or Michael Jackson? If not, there's no comparison. I don't think they do. She may be the biggest thing in pop music, but she doesn't have the clout that even Taylor Swift does, and she's AC at this point.@@niemand7811

    Millennial here. Music appreciation is a lot different from past generations. My mom and dad used to have listening parties when a new record would come out. One friend would buy the record and invite a bunch of friends over and they would all sit around listening to the album. Fast forward to my cousin (gen x) and music was a bit less of a social listen and more of an individual listen (when tapes and CD’s came out and could be enjoyed alone in the car). Then I got into music when CD’s were the standard and pirating/MP3’s took over. Music became even more of an isolated listening experience. Now a lot of zoomers tend to listen to music not as it’s own medium but as something attached to something else (I.e. video games, movies, etc.) This suggests a trend and is worth exploring

    This is a well reasoned critique of today's audience more than Rick's comments. Great content. I had heard that Gen Z listeners shy away from live music because they are accustomed to listening to music on earbuds which does not have the dynamic range of a live concert and as such, are overwhelmed by the live presentation. I'm not sure if this is valid but definitely interesting.

    Exactly. We don't have curated music anymore, that's just how I feel about it. I grew up listening to the best radio station, which was before YT, and they introduced me and EDUCATED me about the best artist and songs, past and present. It was not a specific genre radio station, it was a radio that was known to be the cultural force in our country. So now it is up to the consumer (I'm not a gen Z, a bit older) to look and find and to curate. But honestly, if you are a working mom and your day is filled with obligations, who has time to find new music? And everything that I eventually find is..not so good. I remember when I first thought "geez there's no new exciting music anymore" and the next day (again before FB YT google espionage), when my radio turned on to wake me up, I heard the new Groove Armada song. It just pierced through my heart. I felt alive again. Music used to find us, I guess.. That's way radio dj-s are precious if they are focused on introducing new music for the thirsty hearts and ears. If anyone has some suggestion on a good radio station, please share :)

He'd judging on the popular music at the time, he makes out like all that shit he lauds was the real deal when half of it is proper wank and always was. He's just not listening to the proper shit, just lowest common denominator gen z wank. They'll be embarrassed about half of that later on, save for nostalgia.

    You did make a very good point about gen z being disengaged from music because of the many streaming services. If you are never actually buying something tangible it becomes disposeable and has no meaning and emotional attachment to the person. I absolutely despise streaming and refuse to ever use it myself, but I feel really sad for all the kids that know nothing else. Streaming has just destroyed music and movies are heading down the same dark path.

    There is a very clear reason Gen Z doesn't care. Because today's music is so awful how could anyone get into that??

    I’m a millennial who grew up with cassettes and cds and latter the iPod. Here is a thing when I was younger I wanted so much to have something like Spotify to exist and having so easy access to all the music I wanted to not carry who knows how many cds to school to be asked to take them borrowed to never return. I never thought this would come with its downside destroying the music industry, Im truly happy to have my iPad and smartphone but wished it didn’t have to destroy the music industry as we knew it.

    New popular music has depreciated to a mostly non-melodic state with no dynamics or meaning. Lyrics don't tell a story like they used to, and repetition is so frequent that listeners would reject songs quickly. Most all common melody combinations have been used - that's why we'll listen to a song and compare it to another, and sometimes think hey, this is copyright infringement. It's like trying to find that cool new thing, but you can't because everything has been thought of already.

    If you consider music like visual object rather than audio, today's music would look like bricks made of clay, sand or stone thrown at you with thud. But yesterday's music were like medals or trophies made of either gold silver or bronze, of various shapes, decors and style, glistening and mesmerizing like a memento that would be awed forever. The difference is of course immense and almost incomparable. How can you compare classical, jazz, lyrical and ballad sonatas with today's boring and monotonous commercial backdrops?

    OK, BOOMER! Thanks for the explanation of the apathy of Gen Z towards music, Cynus. I’m a 57 yo who can not fathom why today’s music charts consist of three choruses with a sh*tty hook and no bridge. I honestly feel sorry for those who don’t care about great music. “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and everything.” Plato (But I guess Plato didn’t have Tik Tok)

      I think Plato never said that by any means. This is a "your generation" problem. Claim things people had been saying, citing them totally wrong and all. You fool.

    Why dont all these vlogger that are making tonnes of money through paid sponsorship, views and patreon just pay royalties to have music play in their videos like radio stations have done throughout history. Why not? Coz they are greedy, spoilt and self entitled brats. They dont want to be demonetized yet they would happily see musicians and artist get demonetized. Here's the truth people, if we dont pay for the movies we watch and music we listen to, then all we'll be left with is rubbish coz nobody can make a living out of it. We're seeing all these rubbish movies and music coz the younger generation think they shouldnt have to pay for it.

    Love Rick and his take on things but you also make some valid points. All I can say is I'm glad I'm an old fart and feel truly sorry for the current generation and probably future generations.
