Exploring The LOST Holbrook Colliery & Vast Remains!
Переглядів 2,6 тис.4 місяці тому
Join me at the site of the former Holbrook Colliery in Halfway, Sheffield. The site closed as a colliery in 1944, but the buildings remained until the 1960s when they were demolished, but the workmen left a lot behind. The Remains of this old colliery now lay in a dense woodland and have been totally forgotten and hidden out of site for many years. We explore the site and find some very interes...
Urban Fossil Hunting: Searching Old Mine Site For Fossils
Переглядів 7214 місяці тому
Join us for a session of fossil hunting at Brookhouse Colliery. We found a hell of a lot more than the video shows, mainly tree root and small bits of fern leaves, but the video would have been 3 hours long if I included it all! We spent just under 5 hours on site digging away in the sun! Thanks to Papa Obscure for joining us and providing the vital information on the fossils! If you would like...

Not only were 99% of people against the demolition, but the demolition was done at night. They could have scared people, do they even think about what they are doing?! And I'm sure that the demolition was done at night so that no one would know about the demolition
E.ON, as always, are destroying British electricity. Because of them, High Margham was closed, which could have stood for a long time, and they have done many other things
I've read at least one book that describes it as Sheffield's Lost Horizon.
Interesting and well researched video. Brings back memories.
I serviced that fire hose when i did the fire extinguishers about 1978 worked for Dunford Fire i sheffield think managers office was on that stair case in had a hatch to speak to the manager and think there where some toiles off the stairs and yes it was full off pigeons would love a look round
Superb video. That staircase, tiles and mosaic is amazing, and the other unbelievable finds. I’ve been to this building many times over the years. I first went when it was a cinema and saw Ghost Busters, Return of the Jedi and Santa Claus the movie. That was when they had intervals and an usherette walked around selling ice cream etc. Then I went in its many forms as a night club over the years. Thanks for an amazing quality video 😀
I think the two structures were the old head sticks bases, the arches were access to the cages, and knowing how well they capped of the shafts in those days you may find the shafts are open behind those arches
They should never have demolished them! They, along with the ones at Ferrybridge on the A1, were the signs that you were safely back in Yorkshire.
Insurance job 😂😂
What will the buildings future purpose be i wonder 🤔
Used to go in there in the 60s early 70s to watch the films etc and does anybody the owd iluminous green clock at the bottom i remember that clock very well
I now live at number 32 so if you're ever passing pop in x
What a fantastic documentary you have put together, I'm old enough to understand saltergate from the late sixties and through the seventies as I was there. Top knoch mate
I might be wrong ,but I've got it in my head I went there with other Sheffield United fans for a pre season friendly in the late seventies early eighties ,it's got me thinking and phoning my old blades mates .
@@chrisstones1249 potentially - Worksop have been a regular pre season game for the blades. I’ve only ever been to sandy lane though.
Wow, just fell on this channel, incredible history lesson of an area of Sheffield I never knew existed , I was told of an old cemetery around that area ,how true it is I don't know .great channel.👍👍👍
I lived in the area in the late 90s early 2000's not been back since nice to see the road improvements!
Just discovered your tour of Parkwood Springs video, extremely interesting thank you. I lived at the bottom of Pickering Road for about 3 years until 1973 when my house was compulsory purchased by the council - I knew this was going to happen. It wasn't a surprise as these houses had no bathrooms, no hot water systems and an outside toilet across the back yard. There was a 'general store' type of newsagent a few hundred yards further up Pickering Rd which served the community and at that time many of the houses were occupied by what were designated by the council as 'problem families' (this is hearsay). I believe the whole area was originally a deer hunting ground for the Duke of Norfolk estate and in the 19th century part of it was utilised to provide housing for the workers who were installing the Manchester to Sheffield railway. The area was known as the lost village as there was only the one way in or out - under the narrow railway bridge from Bardwell Road. A very nice lady called Barbara Worsop published a wonderful book about the history of Parkwood Springs and its treasured memories. She lived there for 26 years from birth until 1964 . There is also an active 'Friends of Parkwood Springs' organisation if anyone is interested, they are passionate about its preservation.
You always knew you were in Wincobank when you saw the cooling towers
I love Sutton Scarsdale, I have been numerous times,. It's pretty unique, its a ruin but not ruined to the point you can longer can make out where the rooms were. I cant recall any other place like this. Thanks for the tour! I need to get down there again as its no longer fenced off. PS. Leke is pronounced the same as "leak" 😁
Sheffield needs hot water to get power in the black burn meadows power station
Sheffield could make another tinsley towers
Nicely presented, documented, and edited. Very interesting.
I still remember them, living in Tinsley, such a pity (to my memories) of them being knocked down, the towers sure did show out from a distance. I remember the motorway being built, cutting streets in half, shops closing, works closing and being demolished, ah well, I suppose they call it progress, I call it a shame.
Great vid. Enjoyed. 👍🏻⚔️
I was treated to the farewell dinner at the ground with an ex player , Mike Hughes and got a few photo,s of the stadium and interior which I treasure. Eric
Cycled right through centre of Manchester on a summer Sunday 50 years ago from Sheffield en route to a camping holiday in Peel near Blackpool, You'd need strong nerves to do it today! 😊
Great video.new subscriber. Learned to snowboard when the ski slope was there and spent many hours at the house skatepark at the bottom of the hill. Very interesting details of what it once was. Hope you had a pint or at the gardeners rest at the bottom of the hill
Your bug...s aat theer erd still bi aytin wi thi fingers if it wernt fer us mekin neeves an forks. So Think on!! Sheffield Rules OK. Thumbs up to the dee dars
Amazing. Don't remember every hearing about it. Many thanks.
That was really interesting. Thank you.
Lost sympathy for Spence when he left his family, to go wasting money watching poor birds dying awfully. Great video though!
We went for a tour around neepsend by a local man who lives in Kelham island ...he told us Douglas rd is named after the abolitionist fredrick Douglas...he actually visited the area when met a local lady forgot her name as she was a abolitionist too ..the mural is on the cutlery works wall..
Comming from Mansfield, we all know why chesterfield has a crooked spire. The spire reflects the people of Chesterfield as they are all crooked too😉
Maybe those pipes at 6:20 are the main oxygen msuns supply that serves all the local steel works ? Maybe they just happened through the site. Is Brinsworth British Oxygen Works still there ?
Fantastic attempt
v interesting
Can u do a video of canklow where joblot supermarket is
New sub aswell just found your videos 🫡
The Hyper Blaster's location is in Chicago, Illinois, not Michigan.
My friend was killed on this road by 2 idiots racing 😡
😮What school would have been located on parkwood springs village ,? would it have been Woodside school 🏫 🤔
The smaller archway would have been coal delivery to a cellar most likely .😊
An absolutely fabulous explore of a once stunning venue! This is the second video of yours I’ve watched so far today and as a keen amateur social historian myself, I definitely had to subscribe! Keep up the good work and I look forward to binging on more of your videos over coming days! 😉
Can’t believe it’s 25 years since that Jimmy Glass goal 😮 man alive I’d have thought 15 years max. Obviously remember the Wolves game as the late 80’s, that was massive news at the time with the image of matey falling through the roof 😂 Like old bill come down hard on Wolves because of their adventures in the lower leagues back then, operation growth(get rid of Wolverhampton troublesome hooligans) probably collapsed in court like all the other undercover football stings of that era.
I love any dog so can't pick they are all loyal and our best friends
I lived across the road from here as a kid and played in the grounds as many children did, I also worked in the pavilion for a few years and had my wedding reception their back in 1999. I’ve watched the whole area go from an amazing place to a total mess shame on Kirklees council for not up keeping this historic place 💜
I used to go to Saltergate as a youth in the 90s, it was great, a total dump for sure but even then it was a rare slice of old school football viewing. In around 2000 changes were made to the terraces which for me destroyed the authenticity it had just a few years earlier, the Compton Street terrace was abandoned (previous to this the Spion Kop and Compton Street terraces were accessible to anyone coming in through the Kop turnstiles on Saltergate, general practice was to migrate from Compton Street in the 1st half to the Kop in the 2nd half to get as close as possible to the on pitch action!), later the Compton Street terrace was partially filled in and the back portion was then seated. Such a shame that the ground had to be mutilated prior to it being abandoned, but this was evidently to satisfy safety requirements. This is why ultimately I am happy that Chesterfield moved to the B2Net / Proact / Technique / SMH Group Stadium, it's a really nice ground with good facilities and Saltergate by then was the shadow of it's former self.
Memories of better times 😢
I'm from Castleford but as for supporting Castleford Tigers don't think so. I used to watch the Tigers but now I know how they string the youth along. It's all 🐂💩 there's no money in Rugby League. It's a shame how the game has gone downhill
I worked for Pindar Print from 1989 to 1991. I went to watch Scarborough on an evening match and Vinnie Jones was playing. As a Wolves fan, from birth, I was disgraced by our fans behaviour at Scarborough. I think the guy who fell through the roof was from Cannock, my Birth town. Shocking behaviour. I loved my time in Scarborough. A wonderful, friendly town. I was blessed.
I came across your interesting video through researching my family history. On the 1921 census I found my grandfather, a coal miner (hewer) stated that he was working at the Rotherham Main Colliery at Canklow, so out of curiosity I googled the colliery name and your video came top of the list. Great presentation, I really enjoyed seeing the site and what little remains, it must have been a hive of activity in its hey day. Many thanks, regards from Mallorca.
