I had a great 3 day project that netted $3k! Last night I pulled in and parked in front of the house. Locked up and went my merry way. This morning, coffee in hand, I need to hit the reset button and get it ready for the next job. Honestly, it doesn't take much to do that. This mighty 6x10 packs a great set of tools, hardware, and materials but man-o-manizchevits, as Tony's uncle used to say......

    I was grumbling to a hardware store owner how frustrating it can be when doing oddball jobs, even when well experienced and with a well-stocked truck, I find myself in the hardware store for the third time in a single day. His reply has stayed with me for years, "I used to do what you do, and I don't care if you have a 40' trailer, you can't carry everything and you're still going to have days like these. Just the nature of the beast."

    Hey Spence! What a cool project! I put a cupola on my father's barn with a metal roof a few years back and just want to give you a heads up on a problem my dad's had and how I fixed it. When I scribed the base to the roof, there was still a very small gap in some areas and when I screwed the base to my 2x4 blocking, there was some distortion in the base as well. After a few months, we noticed that hornets (I think anyway) had made their way into the inside of the cupola and made a mess out of the glass and just made it look not so good. So, I took the cupola off and applied some butyl tape to the bottom of the base and reapplied it to the roof. I also made some ventilation holes with a screen on the inside to allow for the cupola to "breathe." It worked like a charm! Not sure if you may run into the same issue later on, but that is what I did and it has worked great for the past few years. Great look to the shed!

      Thanks for commenting Denis! To your comment and concern for the client who might not be able to afford me (hourly or by the event...) I don't bid on projects for clients who can't afford me and the clients that can afford me are clients that would rather pay me to fix or build than to learn or use the skill themselves. They would rather "buy the time" so they can be doing something they feel is of more quality than fixing/building. To them....my charges are in line with their expectations and their budgets. An example: I just bid and completed a pantry renovation for a cost of $3300. It was a turn-key project. We arrived. Full pantry with lousy shelving. When we left, all natural wood shelving with more storage, newly painted walls, and all food etc put back in the pantry. They had to do nothing but write a check. They were ecstatic for us to do it and for the final product. They neither have the time nor the skill to do this job but they could watch a couple YT videos and figure it out. They are both MD doctors. They have some smarts about them. They would rather write the check. Now I would never hire anyone to build my pantry for $3000 or even for half that. I would rather spend $3000 on something else and figure out how to build the pantry shelves. I am not a client I would bid to. For me, and any legitimate morally run business, It is never about taking advantage of a client. It is about getting clients who will pay me what I am worth --- which is true for all contractors and for all handymen. This is why I try to never charge Time & Materials. The final invoice is always a surprise and never a good one and I don't want the client to feel that I worked slow and took advantage. I always work on a bid which prices per event or action and not hourly. A real business, contracting/construction or handyman service just can't make a living with this if they charge $35/hr. Too much overhead. Too big of an investment in tools. Too much time invested in developing skills. Like all professions, it needs to be compensated at an appropriate level to sustain the business and earn a profit. Great comment and thanks for letting me clarify why costs are what they are (event or hourly).

    I think it's great that there's a channel here where we can exchange ideas as craftsmen. We all have the same problem, that everything is far too expensive. The cost of the material, the tools, what we need to do the job at all. The delivery simply turns everything upside down. You can't even plan from week to week. At the moment I'm just calculating evThat's why I no longer share it. It's just too low. Thanks for your channel.erything open... And the smallest part of that is my hourly wage. • @sdsconstruction
      @sdsconstruction 7 днів тому

      Howdy AB! Like you, I am very thankful for the handful of channels on YT I have found where us contractors/handymen/craftsmen can participate in group communities of like minded people and share our experiences and advice about the trades we are a part of. You are correct about how expensive things have become and how to educate our clients about it so they better understand why the costs for projects are the way they are. I like working off fixed cost proposals or from per event bids so the costs are known to the client up front. I never go back to the client if I goofed on the cost and it was higher than expected. If I bid $200 thinking it would take an hour but it took three, I invoice $200. I absorb the loss and hope to plan better next time. The toughest thing I found was how to understand that clients place high value what I do and the quality of what I deliver and separate that from how I view what I charge. For example. I charge $300 to replace a toilet. There is no way I would ever pay someone $300 to swap a toilet but ...here is where I have to separate how I view value and how clients view value. And....I make sure to only work for clients who can afford me so I never feel like I am taking advantage of them.

    I start the day with a mostly empty tool belt and grab whatever I need for the day out of the tool bag. I'd never need tin snips for framing or a chalk line for doing trim work. There's no point in carrying around tools that you're not going to touch all day. Loading my tools every morning also gives me a chance to grab any fasteners, shims, blades or any other consumables I'll need.

    I'm over having my occidental bags spilling out every day. I'm leaning towards the DeWalt backpack but I haven't pulled the trigger. I need (want) two more medium Toughbox's first. The set as they sell them roller, medium, small make decent steps when working and two stacks plus a board make a bench. I know what you mean though. I don't want the "tote" because it doesn't stack but I guess like the back pack you could rig up a hanger.

  • @trigunstudios217
    @trigunstudios217 13 днів тому

    I currently use Dewalt Tstak but also for my belt I use the Toughbuilt belt with cliptech. I keep pouches with certain sets of tools for various tasks and the rolling tool bag is enough for some bigger tools along with storing 3 detachable pouches for your belt and you can store the belt in the tool bag when you arent using it while you use the portable pouches that can stand up on their own. They also have a new portable stacking system still coming out that holds pouches as well as drawers with a rolling drawer box for the bottom unit soon. If you are just looking for a small tool tote seperate from the belt I found the Craftsman 18 pouch tool tote is great. After rewatching I would say that Craftsman 18 pouch one or one of the toughbuilt totes with a cliptech belt. There are many different sizes depending on how much room you have and having various pouches will keep whatever is on you light. And if you need more tools just clip more on or use bigger pouches. You can hang the pouches from anywhere in your trailer that has a flat wall.

I have the Veto Pro Pac Tech MCT Blackout Customizable Medium Sized Compact Service Tech Tool Bag (copied straight from the description on the order form lol) and I absolutely love the bag! @sdsconstruction 12 днів тому

      Hi Russ! Thanks for jumping in to the conversation! Good idea. I looked into the Veto totes and backpacks a while ago before I decided on the Klein backpack for my electrical tools. I went with Klein because it was $100 less and had good reviews and it was a way to see if the backpack for tools was a way to go. I will copy/paste your suggestion and give it a look. I am leaning towards a tote for carpentry/construction rather than a backpack (good idea about zipping up though).... unless the new trailer would allow for a rolling TSTAK or Packout. I am up/down steps a lot and wonder about the rolling drawers and if they would not be the way to go at first.

      @sdsconstruction 14 днів тому

      Hi Adam.... thanks for commenting! I use upcut spiral bits (1/4in on my cordless router and 1/2in on my corded) when I have them and two flute straight cutters when I don't have the upcut. I also use a router pattern bushing that inserts into the router base allowing the bit to pass through it while the bushing guides the cut with whatever pattern I am using, in this case, straight quarter inch slots while keeping the pattern safe from cuts and nicks.

    • @Adamthebuilder
      @Adamthebuilder 14 днів тому

      Does your plywood fit loose in those joints you router or do you use undersize bits made to match the size of the plywood? I bought a set of router guides and can’t wait to use them!

    • @sdsconstruction
      @sdsconstruction 12 днів тому

      @@Adamthebuilder Hi Adam. Thanks for the question. The router bit I use to route the slots is 1/4in and the plywood is slightly less than 1/4in (likely metric) so they fit but not tight so I don’t have to force them.

      Hey there DBA! In good conscience and out of respect to Ron Paulk, I cannot draw up plans for my existing trailer or my new trailer since the old one is 85% a SMART trailer designed by Ron and the new trailer will likely be mostly his design as well with other modifications. If you like what you see in my small trailer, check out his trailer and designs on his Smart Woodshop channel and website. Plans are really inexpensive. His build videos offered some insight during my build. Thanks for commenting and asking!

  • @realworldcarpentryremodeli5868

    Hey Steve . I couldn’t agree with you more. The cubbies are awesome and I will definitely build them in my next version. The only thing I don’t think I have heard anyone say is that these trailers are all under built. It seems everyone is purchasing 7000 gvw trailers. I have a 7x14 7000lb gvw trailer set up like yours and I am at capacity. I do tow daily and don’t leave it on the job so it sees a lot of wear and tear. I’ve snapped leaf springs and axels. I’ve since added the upgraded 2 5000lb axels and heavier leg springs. So my recommendation to anyone building one of these trailers is that they consider ordering a more heavy duty trailer. It’s a bunch of extra money that is well worth it. Thanks for all of the videos you produce we appreciate all of your incite and hard work.

    • @sdsconstruction
      @sdsconstruction 21 день тому

      Thanks for the great insight RWCR! You could not be more correct about a warning up front to buy a trailer with 10,000 lb capacity or better to avoid the weight issue and the added wear and tear of a max-weight loaded trailer has on tires, suspension, and axles. The rugged upgrade is extremely recommended. My next trailer will be ordered with tandem 5k axles for this very reason. I would appreciate knowing that in the new trailer, I would always be under weight. (A good peace of mind)!. Go Cubbies!!!!!!

      Howdy Pit! Thanks for commenting. You are entirely on point with disposals. I have heard little good and much bad about the effect disposals have on drain plumbing. I will confess to never reading the instructions so diligently as to know what not to put down one (just used some form of community memory about what I have heard not to do....). This being said, the Mrs. wanted one in our new addition kitchen so I installed one. We use it for small stuff and it is not a real go-to for most trash disposal. We tend to through that stuff away and not worry about the disposal option.
