    that came out well, congrats! I don't believe the coating on the foam is supposed to help contain the metal as you explained though. It's actually entirely optional for a part like this IMO. My understanding is that its only purpose is to improve surface finish. In fact, if you applied it thick enough to contain the metal, it would not have the necessary permeability to allow the foam vapour to escape into the sand before the advancing front of molten metal. Instead it would be forced to bubble back up through the sprue, to the casting's detriment. I can't claim to have truly mastered lost foam casting, but I've poured enough successful lost foam castings using no coating at all and nothing but well vibrated dry sand to contain the metal to know coatings aren't 'essential'. However it is the best practice if you have time to wait for it to dry. Without a coating the surface finish is only as smooth as your sand is fine. Keep kraken on! 👍

    • @KrakenCasting
      @KrakenCasting 2 місяці тому

      @tobhomott ahh, I thought it was supposed to act as a barrier between the metal and the sand so they wouldn't mix during the pour. I would argue it was still vital in the socket portion for this particular casting, since I wanted that to come out so clean. Thanks for watching!

    • @tobhomott
      @tobhomott 2 місяці тому

      @@KrakenCasting if you need the extra good finish then yeah I agree. Coatings let you get very close to a perfect reproduction of the foam pattern, comparable to investment. You could even coat just part of a pattern. It's probably moe important in engineering castings that will get machined. Kelly Coffield is the guy who studied how the pros do it and really has lost foam figured out for the home foundry setting. Here I'm mostly paraphrasing things he's explained a lot more clearly and authoritatively in his many videos and forum posts. His castings speak for themselves. Before that the whole online foundry hobby community believed thick coatings used like a sort of investment to keep the sand from caving in was the way to go. Some of those old tutorials can still be found online if you search for them. You'd see people trying to vent lost foam molds with drinking straws poked into the foam before coating, which we now understand had no actual effect. Some of the castings came out pretty good... "For homemade". I really believe even as hobbyists we can make castings that really are pretty good, period. Even great. I think if you had used a thick coating your mace head would have a bunch of inclusions and fold defects visible on the surface and probably present all throughout its interior as well, caused by bubbling mold gases being unable to push out instead of rising back through the melt. Instead, by using the coating only as a thin permeable barrier, by all appearances it is good clean solid metal all through with only minimal internal porosity or inclusions. 👍

    • @stevesrt8
      @stevesrt8 2 місяці тому

      Mott is right. I use a fairly thin coating. i find with no coating i get sand sticking to the surface but the gasses should vent through the coating and not come up through the pour like that. the bulging and blow out on the edges is from loose sand. vibrate your sand and it will be much cleaner result. also 6volts is a bit low for your cutter. going to a 12volt battery will heat it up or use a power supply with adjustable voltage to really dial it in. cheers. nice work. great editing

    On the blow out one, that’s actually a seriously cool look actually. Like done in cgi or even traditional animation to show the outward effects of like a blowback on a spell? Really cool look. Also for the skull portion you could always pivot to a fleur-de-lis or a four leaf clover or something more in the Victorian gothic realm like the stained glass detailing as that was the aesthetic of the books and movies. I’m partial to floral and Celtic designs myself but then again I am the one who is writing about an Irish witch running a spy ring (very scarlet pimpernel style) while she’s still in school during a war. 😉
