When you were pouring the aluminum into the foam, I sware my eyes started burning. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Lern more from failing than not. Still good casts and they will look great as paper weights. 👍🏻👍🏻🔥🔥👍🏻👍🏻 Can't wait to see how the Rose comes out!!!! Good Luck!!! ☺☺
Better to try then not to try! I think the skulls look great! Next time, they’ll look better. Nice mail call from Scrap2Cast!!😄 Great video and good luck with the rose😉. Keep up the good work buddy!
Awesome vid man! I like how the skulls came out, especially the one missing the lower jaw! Glad you got my package buddy and thanks for the live reveal!!!! 😃
No, my camera didn't record that for some reason. It was pretty straightforward though, the easiest way was to roll the silicone off the back of the skull and pull slowly.
They are all awesome! I wouldn't burn out the foam prior to pouring. The plaster won't hold the sand from caving in. It also might have been the expandable foam 🤔. Not sure how that burns out.
Great Idea. Very cool! You are right about the sand being wet. dryer sand will help fill in areas like the eyes. I feel like you can clean the eyes out easily on that one skull with a small screwdriver. looks like some aluminum leaked into a void. there should be a plaster seam there that will help it peel off. as you mentioned, Your skulls failed because you either poured too slow or stopped pouring. the sand will cave in quickly once the foam is burnt away and there isnt any liquid metal to take its place. once the sprue collapses its over. I wouldn't pre burn the foam. it's not necessary. id recommend a smaller sprue. the smaller the sprue, the less flame out you will have. 3/4 inch square is plenty. also break it off close to the top of the sand. All that extra stickout you had just burns off on top of the puddle in a lot of fire. pour quick to fill the can and you should have a lot less flame out. Cheers
Yeah, I wondered about the sprues after the fact. How far down would you bury them and how far apart are your pieces? That bit in the eye is stuck in there real good. I tried prying it out and it's not going anywhere. 🤣
@@KrakenCasting I usually go maybe 4 inches deep. i don't think that matters too much. The can adds extra head pressure too. if i know there is enough volume in the can for the piece then i like to just fill the can and stop pouring. my parts are usually pretty close together. but i melt enough to pour them all in the same melt. i think if you don't pour them all, you risk having your foam melt premature and sand collapsing.
Expanding foam is probably a urethane, which has to burn out rather than vaporizing like polystyrene foam does. Might explain some of the issues. IIRC the fumes are also much more toxic than vaporized styrofoam, so take care with that if you pursue this method. All that said, they do look fun! 👍
It sure looks like it burned rather than vaporized. If I try these again I'm definitely going to try a different kind of foam. And yet another reason why it's important to always wear a respirator! Thanks, Tobho!
@@KrakenCasting it's possible to make custom styrofoam shapes yourself in a mold, using steam to expand the polystyrene beads. But almost everyone I've seen try it has ended up getting a bad batch of pre-expanded beads that won't expand when steamed, I think they must have a shelf life and smaller orders from online sources are likely to be leftovers that are past their prime. Too bad.

Thanks! It was fun to try, and I've got some suggestions for better foam from Tobho. Next attempt will be better, I think.
You got fan mail??? I’m so proud!! Cool skulls!
I made Scrap2Cast a coin, so he was returning the favor, and the rose from Will's Treasures is like a chain letter. 🤣

It only took me, what, a month? 🤣The one skull without the bottom jaw but better top teeth is actually my favorite.
@@KrakenCasting They all look great to me! 😁
@@Scrap2Cast Thanks!
Never done this
Me neither, until now! It mostly worked. If I do it again, I think I'll try a different foam, maybe one that's less dense.
@@KrakenCasting that's what my ex said about picking a new husband 🤣
The skulls are cool , Love watching the videos keep them coming!
Oh alright, but only because you asked.
Did I miss you pulling the silicone form off the foam?

Either way, I still like 'em. They make decent paperweights. XD
Nice vid 👌 look forward to seeing you try those again as well as seeing other vids from you
Thanks a lot!

Yep… That’s my experience with lost foam. Pour rather quickly and stay in it until your can is full. very little flame out
@@BlainesGarage I'll have to try again. I've never done lost foam at this scale, so I'm surprised it came out at all. 🤣
Do you think a hollow printed sprue would help? It might give the foam and easier path out at the beginning. Keep up the mad science man.
It just might, could be worth a try! Maybe it would be good to have a vent as well. Let's get to science! 🤣
I wonder if venting would help. I've found when castings don't come out, its because of poor venting.
That's a very real possibility! More experimenting must be done.
