My Criteria for Judging Magic Systems (Abbreviated)

An abbreviated version of my Core criteria for judging magic systems. I have many more things that I wish to discuss within the confines of these three categories, as I've learned over the years that they can be surprisingly deep. However, I will try to separate those ideas into their own videos.

When Risky Magic Isn't Risky (Threat-Cost)
Переглядів 3,8 тис.11 місяців тому
Lets talk about Threat-Cost. Costs to using a power system should matter, and many writers use them to create various plots and conflicts. There are many ways to use Cost that are good, but not all stories use the idea of cost well. This is why I use the term Threat-Cost, A canonical Cost or Risk that the writer diminishes through plot armor or fiat while still pretending it matters. Disclaimer...

Had some stray audio from the better part of a year ago, figured I'd "finish" it the best I could an post it, though it's got minor tangents. I'll be doing a Q and A at 2k subscribers, and I'm currently working on two videos. One is a discussion with its audio complete, and the other one is still just a pile of notes.

Little Witch Academia's Method of Limiting Magic
Having all five natures could just be a thing of his clan, not an absurd considering clans have insane kekken genkais
Characters’ durability seems to mostly be around chakra. Whether resisting jutsu or weapons. Given their resistance to extreme impacts, I infer that weapons are infused with chakra to penetrate chakra-enhanced durability.
I like that his capabilities rely on a few complimentary themes he took to the extreme. Essentially, it’s Sharingan, Chidori, weapons and he evolved all of them to their peak. Except weapons, but he uses them and combines them with his other abilities, so still worth a lot. He also uses stealth.
I have a better idea than the Rasengan: knife. Seriously, look at all the times the Rasengan failed or fizzled and ask yourself “would Naruto have won, or quicker, if he’d just used a knife instead?” There are several times the overarching plot would have ended if he’d done that. Hell, Obito would have died and Naruto’s parents would have lived if Minato had just stabbed him instead of smacking him with a Rasengan.
It's tough that way. Many of the characters that seem to have useful jutsu would probably last way if they just used knives and explosive tags. Chakra is too valuable for many of these characters to be wasting with big jutsu that people survive anyway. Sasuke had the right idea with that blade
Pre-timeskip did most things right and logical. No inherent chakra natures, only effort and understanding (like the physical and mental energies, fittingly). Then after it became “this is your element, the end”. And later it became “this is your element, but you can get more slowly with effort and waaaay too much time invested”. The original chakra system was essentially a skill and you could use that skill for anything if you applied the physical and mental work into achieving it. Similar to the end, except it didn’t have any roadblocks or anything holding back the fruits of your labor. It was like learning new spells except it also involved a lot of physicality.
I’m convinced, why isn’t Lee using his own rasengan?
Your chakra manifestation section has no marit. Having different elements for different situations is a good thing. Non elemental ninjutsu attacks are only useful in specific situations like gentle fist, rasengan, and chakra blades. Just slapping someone with it will do little because it has no good shape or direction. Also, let's see pure chakra destroy a battlefield. Biju bombs don't count. Edit: Lee can't mold chakra. That is why he can run on water and walk up walls. That is just emitting chakra. Molding it into another form or shape is different.
"MEDIC SYSTEM" learn to pronounce "j" you nerdf
It is crazy I couldn't pronounce my own channel name for like two years. Adult speech impediments be like that, but its fair criticism I think
i assume “using too much chakra” means you spent too much of your physical and mental energy kneading it. ie if sasuke tries to use chidori a third time, he ends up spending too much physical+mental energy (convert it to chakra=spent too much energy) attempting to perform the move and dies as a result. it still kinda makes sense if you think that “draining chakra” is actually draining mental and physical energy which people might just call “chakra” colloquially because its easier than saying “physical and mental energy” so basically chakra could be shorthand for its components as well as require expenditure of those components (again, for example, sasuke would have to expend too much physical and mental energy to attempt a third chidori- you might see lightning flashing out of his hand but he can’t complete the move because he runs out of energy through the attempt and dies as a result). that idea still kinda makes sense. again they could mean physical and mental energy when they say “chakra” without the energies being converted to “chakra”
what you mean one piece have use the water weakness in my opinion. and yeah we even see luffy fight in the ocean under the sea. we say how luffy can now power through it weakening
Sadly so much missed potential but it still absolutely hit
Left off at 23:00
I feel like the author tried to do too much, which led to a worse story and more inconsistencies. if he had narrowed down focus, he could have developed things better and more consistently and shown stuff off more. Let say they were only few jutsu for example, but each had much more logic explored, different masters, many variations, cool uses that were not all obvious, etc. There reason why main character in story only uses a base of Rasengan and shadow clone.
Have you read Hand Jumper?
The webtoon? I haven't read it. Was it something you wanted me to cover? Now that I think about it, it's been a while since I've read anything on webtoon. I died to read them all the time.
@MagicSystemMonday Yeah, I’d love to hear your thoughts on Hand Jumper It has a unique magic system and interesting characters. I think it would make a great topic for you to cover.
16:31 while yes that is a plot hole, im pretty sure someone the chunin exam days created spirit snakes out of their see no evil, speak no evil, see no evil ogres, which where pure spirit energy and would seek out physical energy, and which on contact as no one was there to weave the chakra it'd just detonate like cell from dragon ball, i agree tho it'd be cool to see more of it
This was always my biggest problem with Naruto. Kishimoto doesn't seem to care about internal consistency. The magic does whatever the plot needs it to do. Rather than the plot being guided by the rules of its universe.
Anyone know the song around 12:00
Its "seasons die one after another" from amazarashi. This is the music box version of the second ending theme of tokyo ghoul
@@MagicSystemMonday Thanks!
In my head canon, Chakra is like the air you breathe (or in this case, knead chakra), and to throw a really good punch (or perform a jutsu), you need to inhale the right amount of air and then exhaling at the perfect timing as you flex the appropriate muscles and the proper form to throw the perfect punch. Otherwise, your punch could be weaker, or just entirely suck. "Having a big pool of chakra" simply equates to the capacity of your lungs (or the chakra you can knead AND store in your body at any moment); think of your body as a capacitor instead of a battery.
Sounds like a great system. Don't waste it on Naruto, it deserves better
You're a dogshit writer, you made a subplot that was already pretty good originally, into the worst writing i've ever seen, pull a Ronnie Mcnutt on yourself
This Redditor told me that there’s no retcons in Naruto and that everything was planned meticulously by Kishimoto. I disagreed and he proceeded to wish I died.
That's a certified reddit moment. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Redditors can be rabid at times.
I was interested until you used char gpt as a source lmao. Instantly turned this video off 😂 24:00
You mean in a very academically feasible cross reference that yielded the same results as the dub, sub, original translation and the fan translation?
Same thing here, I managed to get to 47:10, but when he mentioned guy maito as the father of rock lee, I turned the video off too, a big mistake for someone who claims to have done so much research.
@comporr get the facts straight. I said "rock lee and his father are the only people this is true for" Never did I say guy was lee's Father. You can clearly hear me speaking in that exact time stamp you yourself posted
The more I watch of the video, the happier I get that I never once bothered to understand the details of chakra and jutsu. It might lessen my experience, but it also makes it infinitely more peaceful.
I remembered watching the chunin exam arc as a kid and revisited naruto semi recently, and finally gave it a full watch through It was so poorly written and so horrifically paced that it was actually getting painful to subject myself to it around the war arc I ended the show so immensely disappointed it was hard to put it into words and sitting on it for a while only makes it more apparent how lazy the author was There was a fair bit of potential and i still like a few aspects and characters but the overall experience is so poisoned and awful
I only watched the original anime and stopped watching Shippuden quite early, it has been too long so don't ask me about the plot. But watching this video and learning more about chakra/naruto's magic system made me realize that it's basically a worst written Nen from Hunter x Hunter. Of course there are big differences between Chakra and Nen, both can do things than the other can't, but it feels like Naruto's writers had an idea at the start, had another idea while Naruto was being made and then retconned it. While Togashi, the writer of HxH, always knew what Nen was suppose to be, and how it worked. There are some instances where a character is confirmed to be a different category (think elemental types) than what is commonly believed, but it doesn't go against any previous established rule. I have plenty of problems with Naruto's writing, but since most aren't about the power system, i'll just keep it at this. It feels to me that the writer of Naruto had a cool idea, gave a brief explanation of it in the story, and then moved on to his next cool idea. While Togashi hyperfixates on one thing at the time, and over explains it until you're an expert. But whenever he moves to his next hyperfixation, he looks back and make sure it fits what is previously established.
13:39 but isn't she saying "powerful chakra", not "more chakra"? I thought chakra can be stronger or weaker from person to person. It also makes sense when you look at the frame at 11:03, where kurama says "we can't win without MY chakra". I assume he means that his chakra is powerful and they need its power to win, not that he has *more* chakra and they need just the big amount of chakra to win
Strong chakra and large amount of chakra are functionally the same thing. The writer sometimes uses them interchangeably. There are a few outliers I think. But most of the time they mean the same thing, and this is also true a many works of fiction (probably unintentionally). I even found I did the same thing by accident.
The only thing I can say about gentle fist is maybe it’s because the chakra network slightly differs from person to person? But either way, vital spots are vital spots. Also, wouldn’t that mean a punch infused with chakra could potentially hit and nullify multiple chakra points?
Only hiruzenn and obito use the crystal ball. Obito cant use kamui with 10 tails. Madara can. Senjutsu not working in boruto. Neji blind spit in the exams. Hinata cant see through tobid mask. Sand can stop amatarasu.
Sasuke did NOT learn Rasengan!😂
Whole hand seal thing is just ignored 90% of the time
If you were willing, I'd ask you to review bleach. Its a rather... dense subject, with lots of almost meaningless variation, however, I wonder whether it fits the themes, ideas, and characters of its worldn as well as whether it is consistent.
Its on the list of the things I have to cover eventually. I was reading it at the start of the year but changed gears to one piece and JJK Because people kept asking about it.
@MagicSystemMonday Best to ride the wave while it's high, 😆. All respect, man. I appreciate the reply.
These points are exactly why Zabuza WAS scary when he was introduced and then progressively stopped being scary. Kakashi was always considered one of the best Jonin if I recall, and as the story went on he felt increasingly basic and they just had to pull out hax and a lot of “oh yeah no I could do that the whole time” type of stuff. Why did he use the chidori in the beginning if the rasengan was always stronger? If the chidori is weaker than the rasengan why did he teach it to sasuke without teaching him rasengan? HOW did he teach Sasuke chidori without also teaching him rasengan? Edit: Also it’s been stated in many sources you can learn other basic nature transformations but it takes a lot of effort and the Sharingan makes it significantly easier to do since you can watch other people do it and just copy that. Most ninja have the one main one, and a slight leaning to another that can be mastered easier. But learning a third is hella difficult. And kekki genkai is a broad term; but people with chakara kekki genkai special transformations need to be born with the affinity to that special one and it cannot simply be replicated.
I do have to note that I misspoke in the video a little bit. The chidori is not a failed rasengan, but rather a substitute for rasengan because kakashi couldn't successfully add the lightning to it. I meant to say "it was explicitly shown" not "explicitly stated. However, despite my poor communication(my bad), I believe the bulk of the point is the same. Rasengan is categorically better, and easier to perform, and has less drawbacks, makes less noise, etc. So it is really strange that kakashi felt the need to use this jutsu instead of rasengan.
@@MagicSystemMonday Oh yeah man I'm 100% behind you on this one. It was one of those throw away lines that kind of make you say wait hold on when you think about it after a few minutes. But you were correct in that notion, the Chidori was made when he failed to apply a nature change to the Rasengan so he certainly knew how to use it when he taught Chidori to Sasuke. And You're correct in saying a lot of later Naruto makes no sense when looking at early Naruto rules, and vice versa. As a Naruto fan myself I think you nailed the video.
In regards to gentle fist and memorizing the chakra network I'm pretty certain that Kabuto does exactly that using his chakra scalpel. Specifically that fight where he cuts off Kurama's chakra paths so that naruto can't heal. This is of the top of my head, though, so take it with a grain of salt
I am kinda confused how this show was watched, analyzed, a wiki thoroughly examined, a 40 minute long video was made, and somehow the basic fundamentals of the topic were completely missed.
please be more specific about these "basic fundamentals of the topic were completely missed"
idk how i only found this now.......i love shit like this
When you gonna talk about nen?
This video is flawed beyond belief.
This comment is flawed beyond belief.
You made me fall in love with the clown emoji 🤡
i remember when kaguya appeared and quite literally everyone had no idea who she was or where any of that plot came from
"why don't people use raw chakra ninjutsu instead of elemental attacks" because that's not as cool. it's a shounen manga. it lives or dies on whether it's cool or not.
im over all pretty disappointed with this video. used a lot of bad faith argument and just chose to ignore perfectly good information and just declared everything and every one that contradicts your points head cannons
they do say how lee past the test in rock lee and his ninja pals they say he just jumped back and forth really fast. now mind you thats not cannon but it does give information so we can assume that that part is correct
I’m a new sub. Is it true you wrote stories can I check them out?
Alas I haven't published anything yet. I think I have a lot of work to do before that point. Besides, I don't think writing YT channels have the best track record when it comes to their published novels, so I have be extra careful.
