Sam's Doin Stuff
United States
Приєднався 12 кві 2021
This channel is all about whatever stuff I'm doing on any given day. Since Covid hit, I've been forced to "retire" and started "doin' stuff". Quite frankly, I've never been busier! I am a jack of all trades / master of none but if something is interesting enough to make a video of, I'll shoot, edit and post it. here's a short list of what you'll see here: Tractor work, Kubota BX 2380 with grapple, Felling trees and processing firewood using my Stihl Chainsaws including the Stihl MS500i, plus various tasks like building stuff around the house and improving our 7 acre property.
$100 Garage Door
I'm getting less tolerant of the wind and the cold. It's time to close off the west facing barn door, but I'm also cheap. So what can I do for around $100?

Brush Hogging With A Mid Mount Mower
Not horrible but that tarp isn't going to last very long. Probably would have been better to put the $100 towards some lumber to build a set of sliders or even spend the money for an overhead garage door.
@Dan-oz4qb You're probably right. I intend to leave it up when im not working in the barn. I can't do a slider and overhead roll up doors are crazy expensive. I'm leaning towards some huge "shed style" double doors. If the tarp lasts the winter, I'll be happy. The rest of the hardware will get repurposed somewhere 🤠👍
I think that the first gale of wind will shred the tarp in a few hours 🏴👍🏻
We do get some pretty strong winds around here. I intend to leave it open when I'm not down there working and that should help. If I unfortunately leave it down, and we get wind like that, you're probably right. I'll have to be diligent 🤠👍
Touch that wood how ever times you wish, it's your woodyard. Cool tarp setup. Keep cuttin' Sam!
Thank you! Heck yeah 👊🤠👍
Good 👍 job brother
Thank you! Glad you liked it 🤠👍
Good idea clamping the two ropes together. Ditto on the pallet for the rounds. Barns are supposed to have barn doors. 😅
Thank you! I have thought about building double swinging barn doors. That might be the way i go in lieu of a roll up garage style door 🤠👍
I made a similar tarp door on my barn, but I used a third rope and pulley in the middle. Used it this way for 5 years before I built permanent sliding doors. Nice job Sam!
Thank you! I'm definitely adding a 3rs rope and pulley like you did. It's very effective 🤠👍
Nice idea! Are you going to heat it with anything?
Thank you! Someday, I want to add a wood burning stove 🤠👍
I get being on a budget but when the wind hits the tarp the sound gets obnoxious over time. Plus the sun is going to ruin the tarp over time.
I agree. It's definitely a temporary solution till I can afford a real garage door 🤠👍
Sam, You could consider a man door next to the garage door. I have found used prehung doors for under $50.00 or less. The benefit to the man door is not having to leave the tarp up. Happy Birthday
Thank you! A man door is absolutely in the long term plans. New roof, siding, plywood ceiling and walls, insulation etc. And top it all off with a wood burner for heat. 🤠👍
Good enough for temporary. Tarp should last for quite a while hanging vertical versus horizontal that would get sun & storm beating the crap out of it. A closed in workshop will be dandy !!👍👍🍻🍻
@robertrhodes9123 Thank you! I like the simplicity of it. It definitely should last long enough. Keeping it rolled up when I'm not down there will help preserve it too 🤠👍
👍👍
🤠👍
That will keep the weather off you this year. I thought you were going to make a slider tarp barn door. Out of conduit, with a top conduit rail as a runner. I just did the math it would be a $350 door. It could also be two doors that open opposing as well with two extra pulleys
Thank you! That's a very good design. Like you said, a little more expensive, but it would be slick 👌 🤠👍
I totally agree about not putting pictures of your welds on facebook😂 I don’t weld good enough for facebook either. Like you said if it holds it’s good enough. I think welding is like making UA-cam videos you get better results over time. Thanks for the video Sam 😁👍🚜💨☀️
Thank you Mitch! Good analogy. Just keep on keeping on and we get better at everything 🤠👍
If it keeps you warmer and dryer it's perfect for your needs¡¡Good job on planning and completing the project!!
Thank you! It really is effective. Big difference when it's down 🤠👍
I like this idea Sam. This is going to make this winter so much better for you. I know on camera it seems dark in the barn but in person you can probably see just fine. Another good thing is air flow is not cut off 100% so using your log splitter should not be a problem. I am sure the barn also has natural ventilation too. I don’t know how you come up with your ideas but thanks for sharing them with us.😁👍🚜💨☀️
Thank you! The barn is definitely not air-tight by a long shot. I would like to get a wood burning stove to put in there. New roof, siding, insulation, plywood ceiling and walls. Big plans! 🤠👍
Does it work - yes it does so whats not to like. Good job Sam.
Thank you! I needed to hear that. I'll tweak it a little, but it does what it was intended to do 🤠👍
I suggest raise the pulleys up higher and you will have taller opening…
Thank you! That would help. I'll have to put some 2x4 blocking in, but I think you're right 🤠👍
Having had a Shelter Logic with that same rope opening system I suggest getting another pulley for the side you pull the ropes. Lace the ropes through their own pulley and they will open and close more evenly. As another suggested, adding the 3rd rope in the middle tied off on the outside then run under the tarp and up to yet another set of pulleys really worked well on my Shelter Logic. I know more money lol. Good job, your getting there.
Thank you for the suggestions! The pulleys were pretty inexpensive. I like your idea. Thanks again 🤠👍
Great idea Sam👍👍
Thanks! It's working out well 🤠👍
temporary for 10 years?? 😂 Well Dun!
Hahahaha! I hear ya. Thank you 🤠👍
Good morning Sam. Hope you and your family are doing well. Nice idea for a cheap garage door. That will be nice when you get things set up for your workshop. I imagine you will have a woodstove cranking keeping it toasty. You're getting there buddy. Thanks for another video of you doin stuff.
Good morning! Yes, definitely a wood stove. I need a new roof, doors, siding, ceiling, walls and insulation. Like I said, it has potential 🤠👍
Nice and cheap, but functional. It may be useful to put a middle rope secured to the bottom to pull it up and take pressure off of the bottom pole at the joint.
Thank you! That's a very good idea. 🤠👍
Great job sam and great idea👍
Thanks! It was a fun project 🤠👍
Flare fitting not compression
@@jrmorganpetro Thank you!
Good to see you splitting firewood, keep cuttin' brother!
Thank you! It feels really good 🤠👍
Great question ⁉️
@@TravisDoesFirewood okay 👍
Good video. However, it isn't a compression fitting. It is a flare fitting and should be used without pipe dope.
Thank you! 🤠👍
Sam it looks like you are using fluxcore wire, the results with fluxcore are usually less than welding with gas/mig. put your tip closer to the metal about 3/4 inch and run your tip at a 30 to 45 degree angle to what you are welding. practice on a scrap piece first and adjust the welder settings so that it sounds like you are frying bacon. good luck, i enjoy your channel
@@jeffreyteachout1139 Thank you very much for the advice 🤠👍
Practice, practice, practice and the welding will get easier for you to do more stuff! Good job by the way!
@chriselliott2364 Thank you Chris! I'm enjoying it even when it's a challenge. 🤠👍
Dremel with a cutting wheel.
@@jessecarpenter8760 Thank you! 🤠👍
So so far you've handled the fire wood about 6 or7 times and not done yet 😮
@@normangarrand1106 Thanks. I'm trying to do things as economically as possible. I don't count "handling" the firewood if i don't lift it by hand. I do have to lift the rounds off the bucking station and then lift them onto the splitter and finally into the cages. That's 3 times by my numbers. If the tractor lifts it, it doesn't count 🤠👍
If you are storing the firewood outside just take one of the plastic tanks from the tote and cut it on the diagonal giving you 2 peaked roof tops for putting over the tote to keep the wood dry !!
@mrbill8542 Thank you! I've seen that done, and while it's effective, I don't think the boss would like the way that looks. I do have the option of storing it in the barn but it dries faster in the fields 🤠👍
Check out farmcraft101:s project to combine woodsplitter and excavator for ease of work!
It appears you need to turn your wire feed speed down a bit. Your cup should be closer to the weld.
@@shainsmith8433 Thank you! Someone else said the same thing. Will do 🤠👍
I saw someone cut the front off of a tote and hinge it like a door, I can't remember where of why. I'm retired from the masonry business, and we worked down to 25 degrees without the mortar freezing. Portland cement is what's in concrete, plus you can put calcium chloride in it too, like antifreeze. I think you could still pour for a while. I never paid much attention to your bucking station, but I really like how the rounds don't fall on the grounds. I like your setup even better than one of the guys I watch on here that has about $40 million dollars worth of equipment to make about 50 cords a year. I won't mention names because I do like the guy. lol
@johnpyle8027 Thank you for the information about concrete. I think I'll let it wait till spring. It's not going anywhere, lol. Even if i had all that money, I don't think I'd want all the fancy toys. It kinda takes the fun out of it. I'd sure like one of those fancy vertical splitters though 🤠👍
023 wire, a lot of spot welds, less stick out. You did get it done so that’s what matters. I like your buck station. Turn the splitter 90° so you’re not walking around it to get to the rounds.
@@stuartkorte1642 Thank you for the welding tips! I had it 90° like you said, but I couldn't reach the bin to stack it as I split. It's not too bad. When I get some BIG rounds, I may change my tune 🤠👍
I like how you were "ashamed" of the "mess" in your barn.... You should see mine... 😐
@@samstone2007 Haha! It's amazing how fast stuff gets cluttered. Having a large space is a blessing and a curse. If I didn't have all of that room, I'd have to be organized 🤠👍
bit high on the voltage I think but also the galvanising is a problem...sometimes with thin steel the way to go is to put something inside so you have a backing to weld onto, it gives you more wiggle room with the voltage and helps sink some of the heat off those thin edges. I usualy take a small piece of what I am welding cut a slot out so I can squeeze it inside the join...a backing sheet also works with car bodywork. Considering what you were working with that went really quite well...galvanising is a skunk with any sort of welding and you can't grind it off thin walled stuff like either that so weld done....😉
Thank you! Others have also suggested inserting some round stock inside the tubing. I have 3 more to "fix". I'll try that. I really appreciate everyone's help 🤠👍
Gotta stitch weld that light weight stuff.
@@coaterdave Thank you for the advice 🙏 🤠👍
Your stick-out on your welding gun was way to long. That would contribute to a lousy weld.
@@dougiedoug2921 Thank you very much! I'll work on that. Maybe slow the feed down a bit? 🤠👍
IBC N U next time 2. Buck up!
@@alvalonline 🤣👍
I like your work "triangle". t seams pretty efficient. One small suggestion, you might want to put some pallets under your IBC tote, It will take a lot of stress off the hydraulics on your BX. I know the BX will handle it but more stress over time leads to early repairs. You have some good ideas. I like your channel.
Thank you! I tend to agree with you about the pallet idea. As long as they don't get in the way. Maybe even set up multiple baskets on pallets for sorting and keeping the work flow going. Thanks again 🤠👍
Monkey See ... Monkey Do, and "I" am the Chief Monkey. Thin Metal: Instead of a full dimension linear weld, use a "spot weld" technique with Your MIG. The weld will look much better, it won't burn-thru, and You can use a slightly higher amp setting that strikes easier and won't concentrate heat. Takes slightly longer but You will like the results. IBC Plastic: I can't believe no one has mentioned it, but if You cut the plastic tank on a 45, it makes a perfect pyramid-type cover for the wood against the rain. Obviously it won't cover the sides but does cover the top of the stack while allowing full ventilation to dry the wood. Some people drill two holes on each side and use tag wire to restrain the cover against wind.
Thank you so much for the welding technique! I'll try that next time. Others suggested a small piece of round stock inside the tubing. All really good ideas. The lids made out of the bladders would be effective. I've seen it done, but they look kind of funny and my wife has to be happy too, lol 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff I'm compelled to retrace the technique. I''m not degrading the inner-pipe concept, it's just that my experience is contrary. Look at it this way, a welding stream on light metal will almost always generate burn-thru ... it just happens. Controlling the heat is the issue. If you trigger a spot, you can let it cool for a second, or a minute. You're gauging the next trigger on condition of the metal. With very little practice, you will quickly learn to place your next trigger barely on the leading edge (not on top of) of your last trigger. Surprisingly you will have a dime-stack with no holes. The only thing that works better for this is TIG ... and that's another discipline, but one you can handle with equipment and practice.
Good morning sam, is just a suggestion next time use JB Cold Weld. You could pick it up at a hardware.Or auto parts store and it works really well. Great great job. Lol 😅
Thank you! I might have to try that. I've never used JB Weld before 🤠👍
Seeing all the birds flying by is nice but try not to look up with your mouth open LOL, I was stationed in fort Riley Kansas years ago, when walking home I got a direct hit on the top of my head, had to wait till I got home to wash off LOL
Hahaha! Best advice ever! Goes right along with don't spit into the wind. I got lucky 🤠👍
"you gotta have a system" and yours is a good one.👌
Thank you! I've been working on it for a while now, and I'm really feeling good about it 🤠👍
I think you'd have had a better go at it if you had removed the galvanized coating before welding.
Thank you for the advice! I have 3 more to "fix". I'll try that next time 🤠👍
Yeah avoid breathing those galvanized fumes. Not good for your lungs
I like to take a 2" piece of round stock that just fits into the ends of the IBC tote leaving about 1/8" gap before I weld. It will give ou strong weld and less blow out on the joint.
That's a very good idea! I have 3 more to "fix". I'll see if i can try that next time 🤠👍
Good morning Sam, coming to you from Pennsylvania. Always a good morning when you wake up to a video of you doing stuff. Your welding is pretty much like mine. You heard the saying, A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't. LOL. My welds may not be pretty but they work. Thanks for another video of reality. Take care buddy and be safe.
Thank you neighbor to the East! I've come to the point with welding where I look forward to the next challenge. It's fun, so I know I'll get better. And yes, there's always that trusted grinder 🤠👍
Very good video and thank you for sharing. So therefore, if I understand this correctly, there is no need for a safety interlock on your main panel. And since the first point of disconnect is the generator then the generator needs to be bonded. Please correct me if I am mistaken. Reason, I’m trying to get this clear in my head is because I’m getting ready to do this very thing. Thank you so much and I liked and subbed. Cheers from Dave.!😎✌️
Thank you Dave! Welcome to the channel. You are correct in all of your questions. It is a very safe system and cannot back feed the grid. I believe the generator can be bonded at the inlet box 🤠👍
Happy BIRTHDAY Sam !!🎊🎉🎉🎊💥🎈🎂🍻🍻 & many many more!!
