This channel is all about whatever stuff I'm doing on any given day. Since Covid hit, I've been forced to "retire" and started "doin' stuff". Quite frankly, I've never been busier! I am a jack of all trades / master of none but if something is interesting enough to make a video of, I'll shoot, edit and post it. here's a short list of what you'll see here: Tractor work, Kubota BX 2380 with grapple, Felling trees and processing firewood using my Stihl Chainsaws including the Stihl MS500i, plus various tasks like building stuff around the house and improving our 7 acre property.
The Most Firewood You Can Lift With A Kubota BX
Work with what you have... and I have a Kubota BX2380 Subcompact Tractor. So how much firewood can I expect to be able to lift with it. Well, I found out.

I saw a clip on Lumna Acres channel (ua-cam.com/video/_bcRPMsOi4Q/v-deo.html) where he used the bladder from the IBC totes to make a cover for the firewood he is storing outdoors in IBC totes. Just a thought that might assist with keeping your stored wood dryer. Thanks for the content, I enjoy following your videos.
@johnwatkins6822 That is definitely something I'm considering for storing totes outside. Thank you! 🤠👍
Wishing you a happy Christmas
@denismcardle9568 Thank you! Merry Christmas and God bless 🙏🤠👍
That all terrain pallet jack you showed looks like something that'll be quite useful, you'll probably find a few other uses for it too LOL. That will definitely allow you to save space and be able to double stack the totes. I wonder if you could find one of those dump totes that you pickup with a forklift or skid steer and pull a rope to dump it....might be something to look around for to make loading your trailer easier and quicker. They're expensive new, but you might be able to find a used one.
@wildbill23c I will definitely have multiple uses for it for both production and delivery. I intend to be able to deliver full, pre-stacked firewood baskets at a premium. It's all about selling less firewood for more money 🤠👍
The lift totally makes sense if you can navigate it in the field without sinking. I found one for $7,300. With everything I have seen the BX does EVERYTHING you want it to do except lift firewood totes. If you bought a bigger tractor you would have to buy 20 new implements with it and when all said and done you would spend more on the implements. You could probably get two totes and that machine on your Dump Trailer. I'm not sure what the ramp would look like to get the machine in the trailer.
@johnpyle8027 I've thought of that too. A 16' landscape trailer would be ideal. 3-4 full totes and the lift. Plus the ramp is full width. It might be wise to buy another trailer. My younger brother has one I could borrow to try it out. Saving up the money is going to be a long journey but it will be a big payoff 🤠👍
Been enjoying your videos for about a year now. Your firewood process is well developed to maximize productivity and save your back!!! Well done!!! Have you considered increasing tractor lift capacity by swapping out your front lift cylinders? I can't find the dimensions of the hydraulic cylinders for your BX2380, but they are probably close to 1.5" diameter. If you changed them to 1.75" your lift capacity will increase approximately 35% at each cylinder without other modifications of hydraulic pump or controls etc. [ area of a 1.5" circle = 1.76" Area of a 1.75"circle = 2.4" or 135% of the 1.5" circle] ...A relatively easy and inexpensive modification that might just save you the cost of a bigger tractor. Or....you might consider upsizing the PTO lift cylinder to get extra lift capacity to easily move full totes of wood... Obviously changing 1 cylinder will be about half the cost of changing two..... and far more affordable than a new tractor!
@DavidHodges-j5i Swapping the FEL cylinders would definitely increase the lift capacity but I worry about the front axle. I'll work the best i can with what I have until i.can afford something better 🤠👍
Hi Sam Don’t know too much about your machines 🙈. So may be a silly comment. Can your mini excavator handle a bigger load than the tractor? If so is there no adapter to make it easy to move the full totes with it?
@RudivonFintel Great question. Yes, the excavator will actually lift the tractor and a full basket together, lol. However, the excavator belongs to my brother and I don't want to rely on it because when he decides to use it, I'll be left with baskets i can't move 🤠👍
@ Tell your brother you’ll buy it off him at family discount 🤣
@RudivonFintel 😂👍 I prefer the "rental rate" I'm getting right now... $0 per month and he gets free indoor storage 👌
Hey mister you do stuff exactly how you want to don’t listen to others, unless you think it’s a good idea of course, this place is full of people happy to criticise & who know better. Good luck.
@dannykimble7671 Thank you so much! Good advice 🤠👍
Merry Christmas and God bless y'all
@goodcitizen64 Thank you! Merry Christmas and God bless you and yours 🤠👍
Hey Sam I like the way you cut your totes😁👍 I had an idea just popped up in my head. Maybe try lifting the front end of the tractor then lift up the 3 point hitch so when you lower the FEL it will lift the tote in the rear. Just a suggestion Thanks for the video.😁👍🚜💨☀️Oh and I noticed that your dad can keep up with you using the table no problem.
Thank you Mitch! Lifting the front of the tractor 1st is brilliant! I will absolutely be trying that. Yes, I noticed that too. The old man is a machine! 🤠👍
I was going to suggest double stacking the totes to save space in the barn, but you would definitely need a heavier piece of equipment.
@@PDeker Great idea, and that will definitely happen when I have that forklift. It's going to be a game changer 🤠👍
On my home built carry all I radius both corners, one so I didn’t scrap a leg across the corner and for going into pallets. Two yrs ago when cutting a lot of trees I learned about cants and hookaroons. That hookaroon will be very useful as you found out. Two years, didn’t realize that. 😮
I am definitely shaping the front of the carry-all frame. And I'm certain I'm going to wonder why I didn't have a hookaroon years ago 🤠👍
Love it Sam keep that brain going. I’ll bet you get there before two years but don’t overdue yourself for the channel. You got this my guy 🎯⚡️🦾
@ScrewdriverTUNING Thank you! I know in business you absolutely have to plan to succeed. I'm forcing myself to go that direction. It's all coming together 🤠👍
Sam, you have my curiosity up. I look forward to the new product. I see your truck is still in the shop. Please keep us informed of the progress. I like the forklift you showed us. Have a Merry Christmas!
@jamescarpentercountryliving Thank you! I'm looking forward to getting my truck back. I really dodged a bullet there. I'll explain in a video. That forklift will be a game changer. It will lift and stack 3,000 lbs so I will be able to stack full cages in the barn. I will also be able to use it instead of the tractor for firewood production. Then, most importantly, I'll be able to deliver full baskets of pre-stacked firewood to customers which adds value and increased profits. It's all coming together 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff@samsdoinstuff Thank you. Obtaining the forklift may not take two years. Now that you have a target, it will happen soon. I see you upgrading the splitter at some point. Doing so will reduce the processing time, as I am sure you know.
Great that your dad is giving you a hand ! My folks are gone, enjoy them while you have them and i am sure he loves helping you. Win win for both.
You're right, it's important to cherish family time 🤠👍
Like you said not ideal but I do the same thing with my carry all. It is the only wayI have to move loaded totes👍👍
It's always a good idea to do what you can with what you have. At least until you can afford to improve 🤠👍
If spacers are such a great thing, then why don't manufactures install them at the factory?
If they did that, they couldn't sell them. Kubota does offer them as an option when you build your tractor, but many people don't want them or need them. OEM spacers are more expensive of course 🤠👍
Once you get the oak tote put in the field, you could fill each basket up by hand. It would give you at least a third of a cord and open up more totes. Then in two years you would have your pallet jack to move them. Possibly , Your tractor may be able to move them in two years since they will be lighter from drying. Just a thought. I enjoy your channel.
That is some great thinking right there. I will absolutely do that. Thank you! 🤠👍
I still don't know how much more wood in a cord compares with your small split pieces. Surely you charge a premium for wood that small. Maybe a full bin of each by weight would answer it.
That's the idea! I follow Joe's mantra from Ohio Woodburner. I want to sell less wood and make more money per piece. Service and quality 👌 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuffthat’s the best business model in my opinion.
I would put one inside and one outside and check them with a moisture meter to see which dries faster thru out the year! Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
@chriselliott2364 Thank you Chris! That would be a very good experiment 🤠👍
Merry Christmas Sam God Bless you and your family
@jasonmccoy3724 Thank you so much! Merry Christmas and God Bless you too 🙏 🤠👍
I noticed you said the wood has to sit for 2 years.... I was under the impression that for wood to dry out the rule of thumb is an inch per year and that's when it's in a log state... so your 2x2 logs should be dry in 1 year as the sides are all open to the environment which helps cure even faster.... I could be wrong but it's worth checking out
Thank you. It's not an exact science. I always use a moisture meter before I sell anything. Red Oak can take as long as 2 years, so I'm just being conservative 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff i would give it a check after a year and if its ready it will give you a bit more space for storage if its ready to sell
Can't double stack the IBC Cage's in the barn ? Just a thought 🤔💭
I would definitely be able to double stack them in the barn with that pallet jack 🤠👍
Not with the tractor, it won't lift them when he has them that full, and it definitely ain't gonna lift them high enough to double stack....that's the downside to a tractor that small, the very limited loader lift capacity. I run into that issue with mine all the time LOL. Love my Kubota BX2680, but the lift capacity of the loader is what'll be problematic for anybody that owns one or is thinking of buying a BX series. Although I can lift more now since I got my ballast box, but even at that about 400-450 pounds is about all it'll lift.
Sometimes I split faster than he can stack lol , I saw him waiting on you lol great job
You're absolutely right! He's a machine 🤠👍
Good thinking Sam

Good stuff. Keep on doing stuff and don't turn into a "sam's selling stuff" channel. I like videos about a reasonable guy doing reasonable things that either accomplish a task or tell a story. You do well at both at the same time. Some channels start that way then turn into a guy with millions of dollars of equiptment doing stuff that I can't relate to at all.
@@projectswithjw Thank you! I will always keep in mind what you just described. When I do show something, it will always include how I intend to use it or how it could benefit my viewers. I'm not in this to be a salesman 🤠👍
I agree with what you said!Sam!
Thank you 🤠 👍
I'm recommending you check out the FarmCraft101 channel. Check for the multi posts for the modification of his log splitter. He detached the ram and wedge from the original frame and mounted them inverted to a section (guessing 4 or 5 feet) of I-Beam, and powers it from the hydraulics of his small size excavator. His processing time is cut by at least 2X and his personal handling time is cut dramatically. He lifts the rounds using the excavator / splitter, and does it where he cut the tree to produce rounds. He can split them to any size desirable. Quite an amazing process to watch and the modification was pretty simple. You'll see ... it's really worth your time to investigate.
@@richardgreen7811 Thank you so much for the referral. I will definitely take a look at his channel 🤠👍
Nothing beats a quality product. Keep it up.
You got it! 🤠👍
Because of Neil Messick's videos, John with a A Ritter Bitt Wil Do, and Sam on Sam's Doing Stuff always showing and doing stuff with a Kubota BX tractor, I just had to buy one....JK, ok well kind of. I was watching a lot of videos about the BX tractor to see what it could do, how they held up, etc. As I was already in the market for a small tractor....all 3 of the channels were what helped me with my choice. about 3-1/2 years later and I'm so glad I got the BX2680....it does whatever I need it to do...and since its so small it fits into places where larger tractors simply cannot fit...a great example of that was helping a friend prep a spot in his back yard for a shed....the BX2680 and the RTR0550 barely fit between his house and the fence, I had about 2 inches to spare....a larger tractor simply wouldn't have fit back there. The back yard is really small too, so it also comes down to maneuverability too....a larger tractor even if it would fit between the house and fence probably would have been an issues trying to turn around, and such in the yard. Roto-tilled, leveled, packed, and spread gravel out in his yard....so much quicker and easier than doing it all by hand LOL. I have issues with impulse buying sometimes....but one thing I found out is on major purchases is to do a lot of research on whatever it is I'm gonna buy before I buy it. Look around, visit the store, try and find one I can try out first, etc. I've also had those times where, yep looked great in the video demo, went and bought the item, and either never used it, or used it once and either didn't like it or never touched it again LOL.
I love hearing about real-world applications of equipment, it shows what something can actually do. 🤠👍
Yeah BX’s such useful little machines. With a loader, mower and if you can fund it, a backhoe, you have a machine that can do a huge variety of tasks. I have a much bigger MX tractor for doing stuff, mainly mowing and picking up stuff. I’d love to have a little BX too. These two tractors would complement each other so well.
@@kdegraa With only an acre of property, the BX works great for me, I do have the 60" mid mount mower for it, but given my current situation, its more of a pain in the butt because with the deck installed I can't get the tractor in the shop, so if I wanted to use it I'd have to install it, mow, then remove it before I could put the tractor away....Course only having an acre, the BX is a bit overkill for mowing my yard, but it does do a very good job, and honestly its not that bad, I figured it would be a pain due to the tractor being larger than a lawn tractor, but its maneuverability is pretty dang good. I have access to a skid steer and an excavator if I ever needed them, but the little BX2680 does everything I need most of the time....I call it my very expensive wheelbarrow LOL...I use the loader bucket to carry around tools and stuff when I'm doing chores HAHA!!! People may think its stupid but its an excuse to run the tractor around a bit, keeps things lubricated, and battery charged.
@@samsdoinstuff Definitely. So many content makers do a review on something, and all they do is blabber on about specifications they read off a cute little pamphlet or off the website....then never actually do anything with the equipment, or item showing its actual use in the real world. Its like the auto shows where they let you drive their fancy car, but its on a close course perfect track...well shit any car can do that LOL.
Sam, excellent job, i remembered your video about the Kimimoto vest and thought my daughter and son in law could use that, i purchased 2 of them and they love them, they live in N.H. so it gets pretty cold in the winter and they both work outside all day, it keeps them warm and will work great for their motorcycle adventures. Keep up the great work and have a Merry Christmas
I'm so glad to hear that you found a product that works for you and your family! I still love my vest. I put it on when I walk my daughter out to go to school every morning. I'm always grabbing it and it makes a huge difference 🤠👍
Hi Sam, Thanks for the video, I’ve been a subscriber for a while and enjoy your content and down to earth approach. Whilst I appreciate the lure from some creators to push items that they have been asked to promote, I also agree that those creators that have spent their own money and enjoy the product and want to share their opinion both good and bad. We should not forget however that the viewer must perform their own research and never forget “Buyer Beware”. What works for one may not work for another.
@@GuardianHydroClean Thank you! I agree 100% 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff Thanks Sam, Carry on the excellent work. Cheers John
The way Kubota partially sponsors other channels with new equipment I think they should consider you for all the positive comments you have said over the years unless of course that tractor is a Kubota sponsored item 🤔.
You are absolutely right, it would be a good fit, hopefully they are paying attention! 🤠👍 I doubt I'm big enough, but maybe someday
@@samsdoinstuff you need to think outside the box and pursue with Kubota a newer used model for sponsorship. I can't afford a new tractor but could do a bigger new to me used tractor. You can still put a plug for attachments and service And everything else a sponsor could do all the while continuing to build your channel and save for a new tractor.
The main thing I ask myself before sharing a product is: “would I be happy with this if I spent my money on it?” If the answer is no I won’t push it. My word still means something to me which I think is important. I also often promote items I bought and have no affiliation with if I love it and it will help others. I also try not to bash products but will try to save people money if a product really falls short. Some good advice in this video. One more click towards 10k

Hey Sam! would you recommend that Christmas tree? 🤣🤣🤣 My sister moved in with me a few years ago after a divorce and we knew it was going to be a permanent thing. Being single for a long time I had downsized everything, including my Holiday Decorations! my Christmas Tree was a two feet tall fiber optic tree that stayed in a box for 11 months out of the year, plugged in on my hearth for a month and back in the box. When I saw this, two things I ALWAYS think about came up! 1. I remember a while back, I was listening to the Tony Kornheiser POD CAST and he was talking to Steve Young and he gave him GREAT advise that he uses all the time, Steve said that whenever someone wants to have advertise their product, He ALWAYS said 'SEND ME A BOX OF IT'! 2. Piggy backing on that, Scotty who I watch A LOT always tells potential advertisers to send it to him and, If it's CRAP he will say it's CRAP, but if it works for him, he will say it works and he uses it! 9 out of 10 times, the advertisers DON'T send it to him!!!

@@bookworm67-hv7nm Thank you! That's a very good point. Normal use is one thing, but we have the opportunity to push a product to its limits 🤠👍
Being a small content creator myself, I can agree that it's tough. Looking at it from a different angle, however, I can honestly say I have told myself after watching a video from someone else "I wish I knew about that product 5 years ago! Sure would've made my life a lot easier." So yeah, there is definitely some good to it but there are also some bad apples out there.
I agree 100% I hope this video helps viewers distinguish between the good stuff and the not-so-good stuff 🤠👍
There are a lot of channels that I've unsubscribed to because all of the sponsored content. Indeed with solutions looking for problems, but also highly technical channels (mostly in electronics) and then start to 'promote' very very cheap multimeters that are utter crap compared to what those persons usually do on that channel and use on that channel, or that they suddenly start to promote a device for outside (like a generator or so) where they've been an indoor electronics channel for years. I don't mind how for example farmcraft101 promotes products, he manages to find a balance in that. The way you talk about it, I think you will find that same balance that is tolerable.
Thank you! I believe the way you described finding a "balance" is exactly what I'm looking for. 🤠👍
Are you the marketing guy who sold us on kale? Stop being real and logical.

Guilty. I bought a bundle at Tractor Supply last week when I discovered my white oak (which was dead when I bucked the fallen tree) split and sitting in a stack for over a year wasn't dry enough to burn. Luckily, I had leftover Ash or I would have frozen to death. It was 8 degrees outside.
It just seems crazy and I think the prices have gone up since I posted that
Nice job Sam. I especially like the part about “does the creator use it and is it ever shown again.” I like to see truth in advertising. If content creators use it, then show it over and over again. Prove it’s a quality product, or not. Good stuff.
I think you nailed it, that's exactly what I want to see as a viewer 🤠👍
If I hear "<insert company name here> sent me the <item for review> but they have no say in the content of this video and do not get to see it before its published" one more time, I swear... Listen... I get it. YT has effectively knee-capped content creators with their compensation per view less than a cent. This is all YT's fault. Everyone knows it. But the disclaimer before the videos just ring hollow. We know that is literally the ONLY way to make money and are fine with it. But don't think we don't know. ;-)
It's a tricky situation, for sure. I'm glad we can have these open conversations. 🤠👍
I'll see something I want then ask myself do I want for a need and will I use it more than one time! Oh yeah and how much does it cost! Great video!
That's a great way to think about it! 🤠👍
