Sam's Doin Stuff
United States
Приєднався 12 кві 2021
This channel is all about whatever stuff I'm doing on any given day. Since Covid hit, I've been forced to "retire" and started "doin' stuff". Quite frankly, I've never been busier! I am a jack of all trades / master of none but if something is interesting enough to make a video of, I'll shoot, edit and post it. here's a short list of what you'll see here: Tractor work, Kubota BX 2380 with grapple, Felling trees and processing firewood using my Stihl Chainsaws including the Stihl MS500i, plus various tasks like building stuff around the house and improving our 7 acre property.
Doing Five Jobs To Complete Just One
Have you ever had a goal in mind but a mountain of tasks lay in the way? I had that exact struggle this week. Did I accomplish my goal?

Thanks for doing these videos, very helpful for new tractor owners. I’ve heard that running your loader at low rpm can damage the hydraulic pump? Not sure if that’s true or not, wondering if you know about that. Thanks. Oh and your digging video was awesome! Loader beats a shovel any day!
I have a BX25D and I just dug a thrench 160' long 6' deep and had to go thru pine tree roots. My bucket is a little over a foot wide and it took me around 8 hours. Had no problems at all . Great machine
Nice job! It sure is. I do wish I'd bought the backhoe sometimes. But love what it can do 🤠👍
I think your box is ungrounded. It looked like the NM wire went directly into the socket and wasn't bonded to the box or face plate. The ground wire from the face plate to the box does nothing to ground anything unless the box is connected to the ground wire in the NM bundle as well. The socket should be completely isolated from box, I don't believe it shares a ground with the socket. You should either tie into the ground from the NM bundle or run a dedicated ground from the box back to the panel/transfer switch and tie into the ground there.
Thank you for the advice! I will open that up and rectify that situation. That makes sense the way you described it. The ground on the inlet is grounded to the bar in the main panel through the transfer switch but I suppose the box on the inlet should also be grounded just like a sub panel. Thanks again 🤠👍
Are you in Ohio?
Yes. Northeast Ohio.
What a great day's work! You are the energizer bunny. All that done plus filming and editing. Wow.
Thank you! It was a few days but it was a ton of work. Things are really starting to shape up around here 🤠👍
They were a fair size of boulders which your dump trailer handled with ease 👍🏻🏴
It was probably the heaviest load I've had in that trailer. Good thing I loaded it towards the back. 🤠👍
What? Usually if someone say if you can fix it then it’s yours. You expect to find a rust bucket in a pool of hydraulic Oil with shared pins and half the motor missing. They actually gave up on that because they couldn’t solder a couple of wires together. Unbelievable.
I still have it but my brother owns it. He didn't have the time to take care of it so in exchange for fixing it, I get to have it kind of like a free, limitless rental. Great deal, huh?!? 🤠👍
I like that, pops has a 49'r jacket and an Ohio State hat.
He worked for Debartolo for 33 years. They, as you might know, own the 49ers. We went to so many games when I was a kid. I saw Joe Montana play at the hall of fame. 🤠👍
Nice. My sister worked with a young lady, back when we were all a lot younger, and her dad was one of the coaches. Dick something, I can't remember the last name. I like these Fix It UA-cam channels so keep up the good work. :)
@topfuelr473 Glad you liked it! You'll get variety with my channel, that's for sure.
Grease gun????
I greased the heck out of it when I got it home. She's running like a top now 🤠👍
It’s good you kept those boulders accessible. It sounds weird but there’s been many times I’ve wished I had my large rocks back.
I've got some that are big enough for me. My property is just full of rocks 🤠👍
Trailer tires looked a little squat after loaded. Glad the boulders didn't get bound up when getting dumped. "Holy cow that's big" & "oh my goodness that's a load" where have I heard that, oh yeah, that's what she said, lol
Hahaha! Yeah, I still need to check the pressure in those tires. I'll get to it 🤠👍
Looks a lot better after you cleaned it up and you are getting a lot better at working the excavator 😊
Thank you! Things are really starting to shape up 🤠👍
Probably the number one reason country folks HATE mice
You're absolutely right. And I love barn cats! 🤠👍
I normally have to fix a tool so I can fix a machine so I can move a broken machine to get something behind it out and then I get to do what I needed that machine to do. Needless to say I don't get a lot of stuff done lol
Lol! We've all been there! Thanks for understanding 🤠👍
How do you get the air out of the system after changing the hose ? Does it bleed itself automatically ?
Great question. Yes it does through the hydraulic reservoir. There's a sight glass on the side of the reservoir and I fill it half way up the glass then run the hydraulics in and out. 🤠👍
The garden is looking very good!!
Thank you!!! Looking forward to some fresh veggies this fall 🤠👍
Hello, it's always fun to see how you organize your property. But putting the lumber directly under the edge of the roof is not a good idea. You have put pallets under the wood, which is very good, but water is constantly coming from above and in large quantities, so you can just throw the wood onto your burning pile more quickly . :) A tarpaulin would preserve the wood for you or another location but then also with a tarpaulin. Greetings from Berlin
Hello from across the pond! Thanks for the advice about the wood. That stuff is 36 year old treated lumber from my parent's pool deck. I salvaged it and it is totally expendable. I'll use what I can but if some gets ruined, it's okay 🤠👍
Good video! My project is to connect an EcoFlow Delta Pro battery power station for power outage backup to my breaker panel using a transfer switch. Eventually I would want to create a Hybrid power system in which I would get 50-75% of my power from solar. I have identified 10 critical circuits that I can connect to the transfer switch, but in the future I may want to add more circuits. Being that the largest transfer switch on the market only has 10 circuits, is there a way to combine them?
I also would like a Delta Pro some day. Good choice. There's no doubt in my mind you could use 2 transfer switch systems for 20 total circuits. Just do a double install side by side. You would need 2 generators as well 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff EcoFlow has a setup that has a connect that uses a double voltage hub that requires to Delta Pros and provides 240V, However I do not nee this because I am only dealing with 110V service Only connecting 110V services to the Delta Pro and leaving the 220 V services connected to the grid. Even had my 220V Submersible well pump removed and replaced by a Grundfos 10SQ05-160 115v 3" Submersible Water Well Pump. If I installed a 2nd transfer switch could i use something like a Finderomend Dryer Splitter Adapter to connect both transfer switch to the Delta Pro. Presently have one extra battery and will be adding a secound when I get this setup.
@@NBPostman sounds good 👍
Isn't it funny how to get one thing done can be quite a project. To get to this ya gotta do that & to get to that ya gotta do this & to get to this ya gotta do that & yda,yda yda ! To get an hours work done ya gotta work 4 or 5 hrs. Have a great weekend.
Absolutely! That series of tasks took me days to complete, but it feels so good to get them all done. Things are really starting to shape up around here 🤠👍
Sam's been watching too many Letsdig18 video's, methinks! Great outcome though!😅 Always amazes me just how versatile those seemingly small excavators can accomplish!
Haha! Chris is just amazing to watch. Things are really starting to shape up around here. 🤠👍
👍👍
Glad you liked it! 🤠👍
Good morning Sam. Yes, don't burn your dad's firewood, lol. Nice job loading those boulders with a gentle touch. That was a lot of weight in the trailer and probably a good thing that you had the load further back so the trailer would dump. Nothing gets the garden growing better than a slow rain day. Have a good one!
Thanks Paul! It was a massive load. Probably the heaviest I've had in that trailer. I loaded to the back on purpose. If I got all the way there and it wouldn't dump, I'd be stuck with them 🤠👍
It hasn't rained here in a couple of days so maybe I will be able to get out in the garden and yard o do some stuff!!! Water has finally gone down enough I can actually see some more of the yard!! Lol
Wow! I do think we are going to see a long stretch of dry weather. I may actually have to water the garden with the sprinkler. But, it will allow me to get a final grade on my parent's back yard 🤠👍
So you're going to let God sort out the garden... reminds me of the story about the guy out working in his garden. The pastor stops by and says, 'My that's a fine looking garden that you and the Lord have there!' The guy replies, 'Yeah, but you should have seen it last year when I left it up to the Lord to take care of it!' 😂 It does seem like you should be seeing more corn! Hmmmm
Haha! Yes, God is very busy. I'll need to do my part to keep it going. The seed package says the corn is a 74 day yield. I guess I'll get what I get this year and make adjustments next year. 🤠👍
As I was growing up in a farming community in North Dakota The old saying was corn had to be “knee high by the 4th of July” or you would not get very good yield. Not sure how delayed your videos are but looks like you might be eating canned corn this year.
Thank you! I think you're right. I'll celebrate what crops are successful and make adjustments for next year. 🤠👍
The air is so polluted with bad air from industry, cars, CO2... Why do people still burn wood in garden? If there were more people like you which burn everything in garden, we can look for another planet :( Just leave it for the animals, a lot of them can live inside!
I appreciate your concern.
How is brother going to move them? Looks like Sam has more “stuff” to do!
Great question. He'll use the excavator just like I did. Transporting it back and forth isn't a problem 🤠👍
Nice video. Watching you and your dad, reminded me of mine. Wish he were here to enjoy the tractor I got a few years ago.
Thank you! I spend as much time with him as he is able. He just turned 86 this April and he still helps us with projects. Thank you again for the wonderful compliment 🙏
every time i find these deals i fix it then they renig
That sounds horrible. Man, I'm glad this was with my brother. I would be beyond pissed. Feel for ya dude 👊🤠
@@samsdoinstuff lol yeah when you said your brother i was like ahh...thats why it worked out! good deal, thats a nice little machine.
good job
Thank you! Glad you liked it 🤠👍
very awesome work dear
Awe, you're so sweet! Thank you! 🤠👍
Great video and glad to see when you make an error you own up to it and explain how to fix it, although I wished you would have included a video of the work you actually did to correct the mistake.
Thank you very much! And, you're right. What happened was I got super frustrated and when I finally figured out how dumb I was, I just fixed it off camera. I nutted the wire I had cut off back on and connected it through the breaker. 🤠👍
You're a good son Sam. You're nuts but you're a good son. 😅
Thank you! Sincerely... for both compliments 😂👍
Its not a DIY project until you've made at least a half dozen trips to the hardware store because you didn't get everything the first 5 times you went LOL. I just put a larger sub-panel in my shop a couple months ago. I ran out of breaker space in the tiny 8 space load center....I wanted to split things apart for different zones of the shop, so being able to have the space for the additional breakers was necessary. No additional load on the circuit, just more space to add breakers. Now that I've got everything all broken down into different areas of the shop, I did run a dedicated welding line outside, so now I can hookup my welder to a dedicated 240V circuit...my table saw has its own 240v circuit as well so nothing is shared...Not that I can run multiple machines at once anyhow but I'd rather have stuff on its own dedicated circuit....same with the lights and outlets. 15amp breaker for the lights since they're all LEDs now....and then split the outlets into 4 zones (N, S, E, W), makes it quicker to find an issue if there ever is one, by not having to look at 20+ outlets LOL. I could have been an electrician except I hate crawling around in crawl spaces, insulation, and all that crap. Same with plumbing....neither is very hard, I just hate the crawling around bit LOL.
I should have bought a house closer to the hardware store! If I weren't doing all of this for my own home, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do it. God bless anyone who does this stuff 9 to 5. It is always worth it when it works 🤠👍
I’m also a Gen Xer. If you’ll recall back in the day our instructions sucked to the highest level of suck.
100% We figured it out. Like everything. And if you didn't have a Dad teach you stuff, you found a friend who did 🤠👍
Imagine setting up an off-grid solar system and then wiring your entire new home yourself. The wife and I worked like heck to make sure everything was done jusssstttt right and according to the best available information. Since we had a solar shed where our main shutoffs and panel was located, then ran an underground entry cable to the house and wired all of that up, we had to pay close attention to all of the recommended grounding provisions, and there was a LOT of those to deal with. But in the end, we did it and have been going strong for almost two years now, supplying all of our own power without sacrificing anything to do it.
That is awesome! Great job!!! We should all have that as a goal. I bet it was extremely challenging but obviously you are happy with your accomplishment 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff Yes, just the two of us (67 and 63) built our own house on 30 acres we purchased in August of 2022. We had local Amish mill all of our structural wood, the board and batten, etc. They also helped with the roofing. It's taken us almost 2 years, but the last appraisal we had on the home came in at $281,000, so we feel like we did pretty good. We just heat with a wood stove, but the home is so well insulated, it gets and stays hot even at -20 below. And of COURSE, we're UA-cam certified in everything... :)
@AlAndValOffGrid I will check out your channel, sounds really interesting. Thank you!

Just found your channel and been perusing the videos . All was going good then I saw the 49er's jacket. Just kidding, I always enjoy the game when watching the Chiefs beat the 49ers 🤣 Thanks Sam
Hahaha! Welcome to the channel! I'll let the Chiefs slide. At least you're not a Seahawks fan 🤣 Hope you like the videos 🤠👍
I'm another DIY kind of guy. It might not always be to code but if it works & doesn't cause any problems it's a win !
I couldn't agree more. I always try to follow safety codes. It's important with stuff that can cause serious harm. But the costs of professional services are getting ridiculous. I got a quote for running the gas line... $1,200!!! Guess I ha e to learn that now 🤠👍
stopping the water in the "detent" is fine but should add more rocks on the down stream side. If the detent does flood over the pipe the rock down stream will help it not to erode it away IMO
Thank you! That's a great idea. 🤠👍
I'm getting ready to plumb and wire a tankless water heater from my son and daughter -n- law ,and not looking forward to it lol!!
I just got the estimate from the plumber... $1,200!!! Guess I need to learn how to run a gas line 🤠👍
Fabulous! I'm equally excited when I turn the power back on and it doesn't go "Boom!!!"
Haha! It always makes me just a bit nervous, but when it doesn't go "boom", as you said, it's such a relief 🤠👍
Good morning Sam. That's how you learn, by doing / trying things. And yes being cautious is important when trying things.
Thanks Paul! You're right. Caution is always most important. I don't ever like making mistakes when it comes to electricity, but this one was a very gentle lesson 🤠👍
As a licensed electrician in Canada, which has very similar electrical code requirements, I would say you've done an OK job. There is one observation, there are splices within the main distribution, that practice is not permitted in Canada, unless for the purpose of energy conservation. The US code, or the authority having jurisdiction may differ.
Thank you! I really appreciate hearing from an electrician. Those splices are for a transfer switch to power circuits with a generator during a power outage. It's completely up to code... or at least codes in my area 🤠👍
Oops. Looks like your white wire was cut short to reach the GFCI breaker. Hate it when things take twice as long as you think they should.
Yes, I had to nut the piece I cut back on. It took from 9 am to 4 pm to do that simple job. SMH but... in the end, it's done 🤠👍
My nephew wired my 'new' garage a couple of years ago, he lives 60 miles away. Everytime he arrived, we made a list of things we were going to need, we always missed something! And you answered a lot of questions when you said it was natural gas. I was thinking that's not nearly enough electric to power a pool heater! And they ran it on an extension cord last year? 😉 Thanks!
I could put everything I have in a bag and still have to run to the hardware store for something, lol. The wiring is now good. All we need is the gas hookup 🤠👍
I'm not an electrician. I'm also not in the USA, so when you said: "two-wire" I was: "Why?!? You're going through all this trouble, and you're not going to hook up PE / ground?!?", only to see a few minutes later that what you called "two-wire" doesn't have two wires; it has three... It's interesting to see the differences between how countries do things. Over here in the Netherlands GFCI's are mandatory on all breakers (with a few exceptions that rarely apply at residential setups), and our boxes are made of plastic instead of metal. Also, we don't do split phase, it's all 240V single phase or three phase 400v (mainly used for solar inverters, car chargers and stoves, though most stoves use 230V elements on the individual phases). One thing I did learn about the USA though: Neutral and ground are NOT tied together on the bar, they should go on separate bars. At the MAIN breaker panel, you tie the neutral and ground bars together at the designated spot. If you don't have sub-panels it doesn't really matter, but tying them together in a sub-panel makes it so that current flows through the ground wire, which is dangerous.
That is all very interesting! I feel exactly the same way about "2 wire". It actually has 3 but they just don't count the ground for some reason. So confusing. But, it all works 🤠👍
We Americans abbreviate everything.!!! 2 load wires. Ground is protection or just in case wire here in America. Neutral is a back feed that connects to the ground.
"two-wire" was actually a thing in the US up until the mid-60s. I have a mid-60s built home with only 2 wires for the lights/outlets - no ground. The 220 lines do have ground.
@@BlackMan614 before that it was nob and tube 1 wire.!!
There is a neutral to ground bond screw at the main distribution in a typical residential installation, despite there being separate buss bars. There are cases when this bonding screw is removed, such as in out buildings, where a separate ground needs to be established. This is covered in the electrical code, which itself has many rules, sub rules, exceptions, and not withstanding clauses. All of which must be adhered to. The "ground" wire is not counted as it's really a bonding conductor, not designed to carry any current, except in the case of a fault, it is a smaller gauge, or cross sectional area, than the live and neutral, as its purpose is to momentarily shunt a fault to ground, and trip the circuit breaker.
Been a contractor for years. Hard wear store trips are the normal .!! I have to get better at that as well. !!!
Thank you! I knew there had to be some people who felt my pain, lol 🤠👍
