    hi there, friend. always a pleasure to see one of your videos and this one was no exception first, i totally agree with you about physical books. i have tried audiobooks and i've been a miserable failure with them. just can't do it. electronic books are also not for me though i did get the cheapest kindle many years ago because i lived overseas and traveled a lot so i couldn't take actual physical books with me. i don't like it but the kindle served a purpose. now that i'm living back in the u.s. i rarely use my kindle. i enjoy the feel of a book in my hands and i believe research shows that what happens in the brain is quite different when you do that congratulations on your dragon plant. and good luck! i'm a miserable failure with plants and kill them by either putting too much water or not enough. i just can't win so i no longer try. shame. having plants around really does lift one's spirits very happy to hear that you enjoyed two gentlemen of verona. i can't wait to hear what you think of hamlet. warning! i am an english teacher and one of my specialties is shakespeare. i hesitate to say that i am an expert but i know a lot about his work and, of course, i've taught hamlet many, many times to seniors. don't be intimidated by the language (early modern english) and remember that shakespeare's work rewards multiple readings. enjoy! michael moorcock is one of those writers that i have been hearing about for decades but i've never gotten around to him. i suppose i probably thought he was more fantasy than science fiction and i do prefer science fiction. still, i read plenty of fantasy so not sure why i have steered away from him. i should probably pick up something by him especially with what's happened lately.... what am i talking about? well, there's this other author that i've been hearing about for ages as well and i finally picked up one of his books. omg. amazing! excellent writing and thoughtful ideas. in fact, i've read three books by him in the last month. all three were different and yet excellent. i can't recommend him highly enough. who? thomas m disch. i've now read the puppies of terra (a satire), 334 (sf with a sociological focus), and on wings of song (dystopia). disch has an interesting history as well. i can't wait to read more by him and am now on the hunt for all his books. fortunately, i do have three more old paperbacks on my shelves that i've found over the past weeks which are ready to go. keep an eye out for his work though he's not easy to find in used bookstores but, of course, that makes the hunt all the more fun yay! it's great that you are going to read dickinson's poems how they were meant to be read. let me know if you think her style makes a difference to you. poe's sonnet is awesome. he has so many wonderful poems. take a look at alone; it's one of my favorites i must admit i've never been a gaiman fan. i read a couple of his things years ago and never went back for more. if the allegations against him are true, then let's hope he gets what he deserves i'm not going to comment on the news this week. you and i are pretty much in agreement when it comes to our overlords. evil! i'm sure you saw the news about the hamas leader being killed in iran. what do you think are the chances that corporate news will say iran has a right to defend itself? we both know the answer to that! good luck with your future plans to visit family in arizona. quick question for you: is there a way to reach you directly and privately? why? i have some books i may want to send your way cheers 🚗🚗🚗

      hi friend i Just got my new copy of Dickinson poems and it looks like i got the right one. look for the return of my poetry slam lol its a lil scary how no one cares about neil gaiman. but i hear hes also a 'blue no matter who' person and the dems are basically a cult now. im so enjoying my Shakespeare experiences. i dont know where the next one is yet but im gonna try and go. i just dont want the plant to die. they say i only gotta water it once a week, but that seems like too little hunting the book stores for physical books is the best!! i got your message on goodreads and ill be in touch there. thanks so much for thinking of me when you think about great books you wanna share i cant believe Iran has had such restraint, we just keep egging them on into WW3 hope you have a great week🚗🚗🚗

    I have nothing but respect for you and what you're doing, so PLEASE don't take this in any wrong way, I absolutely DO NOT mean this to be offensive or negative in any way... but have you thought about changing the name of your UA-cam channel? You are so much more than a "poor person", you are unique, full of love and life, and you inspire people that you probably will never meet through your videos. I just think that you deserve a proper name that reflects the best of you. Again, much respect and love your channel, bro 💪👏👊🥳

      No offence taken!! I really feel like so many people avoid reading out of a fear of looking or feeling stupid. i want ppl to see me and all my mistakes and feel, "if this guy can do it, so can i" The name was just something i thought was funny at the time but i really feel it goes well with the overall message of what i want for the channel that reading is for everyone. plus poor ppl dont get enough representation (even in books) thanks so much for the kind words 💪

    I have that CJ Cherryh on my tbr too. I read the first three in her Foreigner series and I enjoyed them - she writes interesting alien societies. 🌻 I'm not surprised about the Three Body Problem 😊 it's a very love or hate kinda book. I read it when it first came out and I was very excited for a non-Western hard sci fi story. You made a good point about how the CCP only allows books that tow the line to be released - if you're aware of it you learn how to read around the propaganda just like we've learnt how to read around Western neolib propaganda. End of the world for real 🔥😭

      very cool that you read some CJC before, i always get a lil embarrassed when i never even heard of a well known writer. im jealous that you got to read 3BP before it was so hyped up, it really did get hurt by its own popularity i feel. even the title to book 2 gives away a key plot point to book 1. thanks for not hating me for not liking a book you love. Im so happy you can look past the Neo Lib Propaganda we send out to the world, it's everywhere! once you know where to look!! The end is near hope you live it up🌻

    🚘 I DNFd The Three Body Problem as well. All the characters were the same and it was poorly written. Netflix show is awesome though. The Olympics loses me with breakdancing being a “sport”. What a joke lol. Doesn’t matter though because I don’t watch that nonsense anyways. And yes…Politics in this country is pure rigged and orchestrated theatre. It’s all corrupt and voting is meaningless which is why I don’t vote. The top 1% own and run everything and over their dead bodies would they ever allow us peasants in the bottom 99% to have any real power, say, or control. Democracy is an illusion.

    This was a great book. I read it a few years ago, and gave it 5/5 stars. I don't remember too many specific details about it anymore, and there were definitely sections that I wasn't the biggest fan of (the other character who experienced fish raining from the sky, etc.), but I remember the wonderful, somber and sad feelings that it evoked in me during certain parts, like Kafka's romantic relationship with the librarian, and when they listen to music on vinyl together. Beautiful

    • @PoorPersonsBookReviewer
      @PoorPersonsBookReviewer 5 днів тому

      I didn’t mention the raining fish, some people think that Nataka was causing the weather, but I think his more basic nature made him better in tuned to nature. It was so sad that miss Saeki considered her life over when she lost her love to protesters violence, and she was using Kafka as a substitute! What a crazy story, thanks for watching

  • @athoszubiaur2144
    @athoszubiaur2144 5 днів тому

    glad to hear you liked kafka on the shore. i read this book too many years ago to remember specifics but i do recall enjoying it. murakami's work is always worth reading. sputnik sweetheart is still my favorite you make a great point about the translation. a good translator is worth his weight in gold. one of my favorite books was somewhat recently reissued with a new translation that i thought was awful i'm not surprised to hear that some women might not appreciate murakami's work. i get it as well but then don't read it. seek out art that appeal to you since art, after all, is very personal not all stories have endings that wrap everything up. that can be frustrating for readers. then again, it can be a way to reflect reality since in the real world we are often left without any answers to questions that we have about our lives always great to hear your perspective. happy reading!

    good morning, friend. i am right there with you. i can only read one book at a time. i've tried but boy was that a mistake. shakespeare? yay! i think i told you that i'm an english teacher. well, my specialty is shakespeare. glad you enjoyed twelfth night. it's a good play to start with. richard 3? nice! what's next? hamlet? ;) that walking tour sounds awesome. it reminds me of a walking tour i took in london some years ago. it was a shakespeare one and boy was it awesome. amazing how much history is all around us i'm not familiar with those two poe stories. they sound very interesting i, claudius? i remember when you first reviewed it. i've never read it and it's on my tbr list but you know how that goes. i've heard the series is very good. derek jacobi is in it if i recall. jacobi is a big shakespearean actor but unfortunately he doesn't think shakespeare was shakespeare. crazy! i was eager to see if you liked malice. books by that writer have been on my radar for a while but i've been hesitant. i'll be curious to see what you think of the sequels i looked up whalefall on goodreads last week when you said you were going to read it. it was described as a book about daddy issues. hmmm. not sure i can make time for that. i've resolved my daddy issues! the white sultana sounds interesting but not my cup of tea. or should i say coffee? you got me very interested in the coffee comics. my library didn't have a copy so i requested one through interlibrary loan and guess what? they said there were no copies available because the libraries that have it don't allow it to be loaned. i feel like i'm on a mission now but the price of the onmibus is crazy. i don't like reading online but maybe i will have to in this case. thanks for the tip. i'm very curious about this comic good luck with kafka on the shore (not my favorite) and the three-body problem (didn't like it enough to continue with the series) it pains me to see you reading dickinson's poems in altered editions. just remember that these are NOT how dickinson wanted her poems to be published or read. sigh. i don't like to comment on your news but....sometimes i can't help myself! "these people are fucking idiots" yep. dangerous idiots! i'm going to stick with jill stein. menendez? my younger brother was one of his staffers back when he was starting as a representative for new jersey. he has stories about menendez. the guy has always been a shyster. shocking, i know the internet problem was crazy. we are very vulnerable indeed. i think a more likely suspect is our own government as they learn how to further control us. china? iran? it's more likely these clowns in control are incompetent. that's what i think i was just reading about the world court has really put the screws to israel. notice how no one is talking about it. they are all about the "rule of law" but when the world courts say they are wrong...they just ignore it. evil fuckers of course that guy was a spy. the irony is they will probably treat him better than if we caught a spy they say they have installed kamala is SO revealing. this is the party that talks about democracy but will not allow its voters to decide who the nominee is. this is now the third cycle where this happens. if you don't see how corrupt the democrats are, then you simply don't want to see it. unreal. okay, this is a long comment. apologies! take care and until next time... 🕶😎🕶

      hi friend i just orderd the complete collection of Emily Dickerson! i hope they are written the right way. i really can't tell the difference but you're not the only E.D fan who has told me im doing it wrong. The people have spoken lol It's so annoying how hard it is to find Too Much Coffee Man, im with you i hate reading on a kindle but im not paying that much! my next shakspera in the park is gonna be the 2 gentlemen of Verona, im gonna be prepared this time. Did you read Titus Alone?? i wanna know if im just a fanboy or was it really as good as i thought. i heard a good Quote and it made me decide im just not gonna participate any more "If Voting Made Any Difference, It Would Be Illegal" im half way through Kafka on the shore and it should be labeled as SF, i hate that these gate keepers had to make up a whole new genre (magical realism) so they dont have to admit fantasy and sic-fi IS real literature hope you have a good rest of the week🕶🕶

      @@PoorPersonsBookReviewer i can't believe i wrote such a long comment and forgot to tell you that i did read titus alone. my bookmark was there from where i stopped reading....22 years ago! lol i did enjoy it....but i have to admit that the first volume was the best. you could tell that this third one was not properly finished and/or edited apparently because peake was already sick. it is MUCH shorter than the other one so may it was a first draft. at any rate, the world building and the characters and, especially, the writing were awesome. i would give it three out of five stars. as always, though, ymmv (your mileage may vary) i've been doing some peake research and have ordered both titus awakes: the lost book of gormenghast and vast alchemies: the life and work of mervyn peake. both sound interesting for different reasons. also, i've got my eye on the gormenghast trilogy from the folio society. it's really pricey but the illustrations are freaking amazing never mind the production quality. my brother laughs at me saying i've now got the folio society bug. he may be right glad to hear you ordered a new emily dickinson book. it better have the correct version of her poems! ;) i might have to resort to electronic measures if i am going to tackle too much coffee because there seems to be no other way. i like how you said it is made up of short strips or panels. might make the electronic thing a bit easier for me yes, prepare for the to gentlemen of verona so you get the most out of the play. i would even suggest reading it before hand, even some commentary. shakespeare is layered and you want get the most out of the experience. then again, you could go in cold without any preparation. most of shakespeare's audience were regular uneducated folks and that's just what they did and all historical evidence suggests they enjoyed his work immensely as well. damn. it's been a while since i saw a live production. i need to do something about that SO much of literature is really science fiction or fantasy but no one calls it that because sff has such a bad connotation. it used to drive me crazy but i don't care anymore. those of us that love it are in a special club because we know better, right? ;) because i'm a naturalized citizen and my parents suffered so much to get me and my siblings here to the united states from cuba that i feel obligated to vote even though i understand it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. i want to vote jill stein but the dems are fighting to keep her off the ballot here in nevada. fuckers. the fact that they are afraid of her makes me want to vote for her even more. because that's the way i am! my week has been...okay. lots of stuff going on. i hope yours has been better! cheers

    hi, there. it's great to hear that you were out and about. keep it up! sacrificing reading time? insane! ;) omg. i am VERY glad that emily dickinson's poetry was saved. there is evidence that dickinson actually wanted her poetry to have a wider audience but it was considered too weird for the time. it's kine of sad that her family changed her poems but they were definitely trying to cash in. thankfully there were other people who eventually brought her actual poems to the public but, my gosh, it took a long time. that displacement book sounds awful. it was indeed best to dnf it. well done! mtv books? yikes. as for trump's assassination attempt....i don't like trump and have never voted for him BUT i don't wish death on anyone. goldman sachs? i wouldn't believe anything gs says. in fact, i might believe the exact opposite of what they are saying. don't trust ANY corporation! sounds like your bibliotheraphy is working just fine. congrats! okay, i'm going to go upstairs and begin titus alone. looking forward to that. i'll tell you what i think when i'm done cheers 📚📚📚

I hope you don't feel guilty about reading less when your weeks are busier. I think it's normal and even good as long as your time has been spent doing positive things. Right now I'm reading James Ellroy's American Tabloid about the FBI's involvement during the Kennedy years and the corruption of that time. Great video ! I hope you're doing great. With reading poetry, you have to slow down and let it soak in. It's perfectly OK to not understand what you have read at first. The big thing is you can't read it like a novel. I love poetry now, but when I first started reading it, I struggled to understand and comprehend a lot of what I was reading. Poetry, at least for me, is very personal and based on emotional experiences. It is tied not so much to the intellectual but to the emotional. But anyways.... I appreciate your videos 🎉👍

    two of your videos today! i love your reading advice. it's true that we make time for what we value. if you want to read, then you have to make time for it. simple as that. glad you liked the final book of the "titus trilogy." based on your positive take, i will read that this week. i'll get back to you on what i think i liked timothy egan's book this immortal irishman. it was so good! i've come across that big burn book at goodwill but i didn't pick it up. i'm with you, though, 'cause i don't want to read about how wonderful a president was. they're all crooks! isn't it wonderful to think that ALL of the culture books were excellent? finally, a series that does not disappoint. it was super sad that banks died, especially relatively young, and as a result we can't bet more culture books. but, then again, he left us ten amazing books. i'll take it! if i had to pick my favorite, it would be look to windward because of its connection to consider phlebas and its themes like atonement. oh, gosh. i never read introductions because they often do spoil the plot of a book. another great piece of advice, methinks. as i mentioned before, you have a version of dickinson's poems which were not how she intended them to be published. her family "fixed" the poems before publishing them because they thought, for example, that dickinson's use of capitalization and punctuation was strange. it isn't. it fact, it's very important to the meaning of the poems. for example, here's how she actually wrote the poem you read: The Soul selects her own Society - Then - shuts the Door - To her divine Majority - Present no more - Unmoved - she notes the Chariots - pausing - At her low Gate - Unmoved - an Emperor be kneeling Upon her Mat - I’ve known her - from an ample nation - Choose One - Then - close the Valves of her attention - Like Stone - compare it to your version and note the differences. poetry is one of my things and this poems is so amazing. for example, notice how the last line only has two syllables and breaks the pattern of the last line of the previous stanzas which all had four syllables. why? well, as the poem says in the penultimate line: the valves are closing. isn't that amazing? the meter mirrors what the poem is saying. brilliant! dickinson's poems all have many layers. keep reading and enjoying. and sharing! you are going to tackle war and peace? well done! i read it many years ago but it was very good indeed. you have to immerse yourself in it. lots of characters and stuff going on. you will get lost in it in the most wonderful way i've come across those gwynne books and been tempted but....haven't been able to commit to them. i'll be curious to hear your take on them. i'm surprised you got all four. what happens if you don't like the first one? just wondering! oh, the three-body problem. i read the first one and wasn't interested in reading further. people foam at the mouth about how great they are. i thought the first one was meh. as always, looking forward to your take i'm cuban and wish the united states would just mind its own business where cuba is concerned. look at what you've done! you've made me comment on the news. i'm a bit of a news junkie but need to cut back because it just makes my blood boil. a waste of time? perhaps. certainly, i need to spend LESS time watching and reading news. i lived in africa for years and years and let me tell you the western powers have raped the continent for profit. it's been great to see some african countries finally tell the west (like france) to get the f*ck out. there should be more of that i hadn't heard about the allegations against gaiman. ugh. i wonder if it's true. i don't like gaiman's work but we need to be careful when passing judgment on people. too many men have been smeared unjustly with similar accusations. heat? i'm in vegas and we reached 120 this past week. crazy hot! i'm staying inside with the air con going and a good book by my side 😄 take care and until next time..... ☀☀☀
