Exposing Mapitigama Buddarakkita's true character(පැටිකිරිය) is a very good thing. I think there has been a lot written about him in newspaper articles and books. It is our imperative to carefully analyze the emergence of such corrupt, criminal Buddhist priests and compare that with the historical political role the Buddhist temple and Buddhist priests/monks have played throughout the history, both in positive and negative contexts. Obviously, there isn't much positive to discuss about Mapitigama Buddarakkita. However, I am not sure whether Thalduwe Somarama was a willing participant from the beginning or whether he was brainwashed or tricked to execute the assassination. Nandana is portraying an overall positive picture of Wimala Wijewardene here, which I think is a good thing, particularly when we put her in that political era and what she achieved in her four year stint as the health minister. Having a sexual relationship with corrupt Buddhist priest is of course put her character into question. The new information I've gathered here is that Mapitigama Buddarakkita's liking for beef as a "bite" for his regular whiskey drinking habit. We all knew about his alcoholism, but the addiction to beef is a new thing(at least for me). Compare that with the disgust directed at slaughtering cows in the general Sinhala Buddhist culture of the past as well as Buddhist clergy's disgust at consuming beef. Mapitigama Buddarakkita represents a degenerating era of Sinhala(or Sri Lankan) Buddhism since colonialism. However, we do know such era's of Buddhist cultural downfall had existed prior to colonialism(prior to 1505 AD) as well. What that mean is that we need to analyze and judge guys like Mapitigama Buddarakkita within that historical context(both Buddhist cultural downfall of bad times and the historical political role the Buddhist priest/monk has been playing).

Discussingg Bandaranayake's alleged homosexuality(or bisexuality) in this interview is a good thing as these rumors need to be discussed in public domain, sooner or later. I've heard the rumors about SWRD's homosexuality. Nandana need to discuss these things in detail, rather than making a fleeting comment here and there. The reason is that these sexual orientation and political ideology/camp issues are interconnected these days than ever. We need to discuss whether the alleged homosexuality of SWRD was factual or fabricated by his political enemies, local and abroad. Then we can(and should) also discuss Dudley Senanayake's background in that regard as well. We know Ranil Wickramasinghe has been a lifelong homosexual. However, we should try to refrain from discussing Naki Nariya's political and otherwise heinous crimes with his homosexuality. The reason being that his homosexuality probably has nothing to do with his criminal enterprise. Same goes for the other bum politicians like Mangala Samaraweera(RIP).

It will also be good if you can bring Nandana Weeraratne to talk about his analysis of Anagarika Dharmapala. Nandana Weeraratne clearly mentioned in one of his lectures about the intelligence files that were kept in MI5(British Intelligence) about Anagarika Dharmapala's (alleged)homosexuality(indicating Dharmapala was a practicing homosexual, rather than a closeted/non-practicing homosexual or an asexual). In historical-political-social and cultural context, we should take this (alleged) homosexual behavior seriously. I personally do not share the western society's obsession with sex or sexuality(from science or other perspectives), nor do I consider it is worth discussing in detail, any pigeonholed views of the world or human behavior. However this is a significant issue in relation to key differences between Buddhist/Sinhala/Sri Lankan world view and the Western/Judeo--Christian world view. The reason is that Nandana may indirectly or inadvertently arguing that these "Anagarika"(AKA detached I think) persons are either homosexual, bisexual or asexual while their social-political-cultural activism have very little or nothing to do with any existential crisis or quest. In other words, "Anagarika" person is nothing more than a person who's found a different means to express their sexual identity crisis, if we go by Nandana's insinuation or characterization of Dharmapala(and potentially all the similar people with that "Anagarika" tendency). This means that there will be a demand to discuss, Walisinghe Harischandra, G.I.D. Dharamsekara and similar claimed "anagarika"(detached) people. Sooner or later we need to open up this can of worms and there has never been a better time in Sri Lanka to open up this conversation, at least among the intellectual circles and think tanks. What we may be ultimately trying to discuss here is that whether these "anagarika"(detached) people have been confusing a personal sexual identity crisis(possibly connected with an existential crisis) with social/cultural/political/religious issue(s). In other words, "anagarika"(detached) person misrepresents his/her "real issue" by expressing their inner crisis as a social-political-cultural-religious issue, may be Nandana's argument. Ultimately, we also need to take into account that the MI5 or similar intelligence agencies are extended hands of the then(and now as well) western political-economic-cultural imperialism, which can mean that they have vested interests to represent guys like Anagarika Dharmapala as a homosexual to discredit his anti-imperialistic political and cultural activities. In other words, MI5 and similar agencies have(or had) a good reason to portray Dharmapala as a person who misdirected an inner sexual identity crisis into a political and cultural struggle against the British imperialism. Nandana Weeraratne would want to discuss his revelations or ideas in detail. I think this channel, this platform can be a good place to start.

Hello Gemunu, This is really great. Bringing in these two guys into the same interview is something special. Both gentlemen have been outspoken in their relevant areas of social, cultural and political issues of Sri Lanka. I watched Nandana Weeraratne's documentary about Nageswari. The revelation about central highland Tamil youth ending up fighting Pirabaharan's separatist war in more numbers than Tamils of North and East was a historically significant, but also tragic. Until Nandana exposed this, I've known very little to nothing about the massive number of central highland Tamils who died in the separatist war. It is not difficult to understand the reasons behind this as clearly pointed out in this video. Please do more interviews with Manoranjan as he has a wealth of knowledge and ideas about the Sinhala-Tamil conflict from historical, social, cultural, political and other perspectives. Manoranjan may have a good idea about a long term solution to put the issue at rest forever. Thank you
