Trail sampler: New Mexico's Alien Run
Alien Run is a trail system near Aztec, New Mexico-just 30+ minutes from Durango, Colorado.
This video shows parts of the 10 mile loop and Outer Limits trail.
A fun part of the trail's history: in March of 1948, a UFO was rumored to have been tracked by radar and discovered on the mesa by the US military and scientists. Lore says a large metallic object with over a dozen humanoid aliens and strange hieroglyphics inside the craft were found. Further, trucks "disguised as oil field trucks" hauled off off the craft and its deceased occupants, leaving the area now known as Alien Run.

2024 Marji Gesick 50 mile mountain bike race
Переглядів 4,9 тис.3 місяці тому
The Marji Gesick race takes place in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on rough, rugged singletrack. There are 20, 50 and 100 mile versions of the mountain bike race. I opted to do the 50-which this year was actually 62 miles-because when I raced the 50 previously (in 2021), I felt there was a lot of room for improvement! Although the Marji is a race, there are no age group categories or podiums. Winn...
PUSHING LIMITS: Bikepacking Colorado's Vapor Trail with Traci

In July of 2024, Traci and I headed out to Salida for a 3-night, 3.5-day bikepacking adventure on Colorado's Vapor Trail. The Vapor Trail route file can be found on Bikepacking.com: bikepacking.com/routes/vapor-trail/ The route traverses the traditional lands of the Ute people. The trail climbs out of Salida to the Collegiate Peaks and traverses the lower ridgelines of Mount Shavano, Mount Whit...
Lost Canyon: A Colorado Bikepacking Overnighter.

This is the second of two bikepacking overnighters I rode from my basecamp at the Wanderlust Hostel in Gunnison, Colorado in early June, 2024. The Lost Canyon Overnighter, from Bikepacking.com, begins in the arid high desert and rises towards the Fossil Ridge Wilderness. It’s a more challenging route than Hartman Rocks, but I looked forward to witnessing the transforming landscapes as I ascend....
Basecamp Gunnison: Riding the Hartman Rocks Bikepacking Overnighter
Переглядів 1,4 тис.6 місяців тому
After scratching on the Grand Loop bikepacking race, I found myself in Colorado without a plan and with all the gear I needed for bikepacking. I decided to head to Gunnison, Colorado to check out a couple of routes from the Gunnison Bikepacking Route Network. I chose the Hartman Rocks Overnighter for its relatively mild amount of climbing and short distance as a way to test out my lungs in the ...
Lessons learned: My first bikepacking race on the Grand Loop
Переглядів 2,9 тис.6 місяців тому
In May of 2024 I attempted my first ever bikepacking race: The Grand Loop. I've been wanting to ride the Grand Loop ever since I rode through the heart of it with Traci in 2022 on the San Juan Gravel Grinder Hut to Hut Tour. I researched and prepared for the race for months, but things didn't quite go as planned. Still, I gained some valuable information for when I come back to make another att...
Driftless Loop: A Spring Bikepacking Story
Переглядів 11 тис.7 місяців тому
The Driftless Loop is a bikepacking route created by Nicolette Reker for theNxrth.com. It starts in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where it quickly crosses the Mississippi River into Minnesota. From there, it travels up and down bluffs of the driftless area, meandering through valleys in the low areas and over hilltop farmlands. I enlisted my friend Ashley (instagram: @ashleybrooksbikes) to bikepack the...

You could be making documentaries for networks. The level of quality and professionalism is max!
What a lovely comment, thank you!
@ it’s true! 😁
Look into Aeroe Spider Pannier Pod System. You may like those instead of a bag underneath your bike saddle.
Wonderful reportage! Wondering, what nav equipment are you using, mounted?
I used the Wahoo Element Roam v2 as my main navigation. I also had the route downloaded for offline use on Ride with GPS and on the Bicycle Route Navigator app from Adventure Cycling Association. Both of those were on my mobile phone. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your reply, very useful! 👋🏾
Beautiful video. I wanna do it on my motorcycle. 🏍️💨🏁
That’d be a great way to travel! I met some nice motorcyclists on the route. Thanks for watching!
So, Katrina, wow. I really stumbled upon your GDMBR video series. I thought, well, I'll give it a try. I have to say, it was amazing. The photos, the stories, the struggles. You drew me in. I really appreciated the route maps and data you included. It made me wonder, could I do this? I love the scenery. This was a true and very special journey for you, and I am so grateful that I found it. I felt the ups and downs. I was heartbroken when you were ill and decided to quit, but then, as if the route said, nope, not yet, Katrina, you can do this. I loved the picture at the end with you jumping for joy. You deserve to be proud. What an accomplishment. Congratulations and...thank you.
Hi Tracy! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. Once upon a time I watched Ryan Van Duzer’s video on the GDMBR and thought, “can I do this?” You can do this and I hope you do!
Katrina, thanks so much for sharing your journey! I've enjoyed all your episodes. You're an inspiration!
I’m so glad you enjoyed them! Thanks for following along, I appreciate the feedback!
I watched your entire series on this extraordinary trek. In my 65 years I have said this to only, maybe, 4 or 5 people: You are absolutely amazing!
Sorry for the late response, I’m out bikepacking in Arizona! Thank you for watching the series and for your very kind comment.
@@katrinahase No worries, thanks for the reply. Be safe and enjoy the ride, looking forward for the video.
Great job. Will the 100 be soonish?
It’s in the plans for 2026…Lord help me 😅
Wow! I love this video and the question and answer interview format… The GDMBR is on my bucket list of rides to do , and I found your video very informative and inspiring! Thanks 🙏
Glad you found the video and don’t hesitate to reach out to me on insta: @birdsnbikesnballet if you have questions!
How do u know what path to take? I'm sure the GPS doesn't work in those areas.
I use offline/downloaded maps with satellite GPS, which does work in remote places. I had redundant maps downloaded in case there was an issue.
Congratulations on completing the route, what a huge accomplishment, bailing out early would have haunted you for a long time❤👍🏻👍🏻😓💪💪
Thank you, and yes…I am very happy to have pushed on!
Amazing ride! WOW so lucky for both of you to ride with each other ❤❤😊. You are an amazing story teller!
Thank you, that means a lot! And yes, I’ll forward to when we can ride together again.
I'm from NM and I've ridden Alien Run a number of times and really enjoy it. The Outer limits (the extenion of Alien Run) is a fun trail and has some scenic spots, but the Tech get a bit more advanced, and really extends the ride time. Good to see you're in NM!!! Really enjoy your videos!
Darn! Wish I would have ridden more now! I know I’ll be back!
@@katrinahase If you are still in the Area, go to Cortez CO, ad ride Phils World. Best trail system onthe planet!!!
I did!! And I agree…LOVE Phil’s World!!
Impressed with the restricted volume and the packing, nice job!
Thank you!
Wow!! Thanks again for different takes on nature, humanity and the course. Carl was a great companion for you at the time of Fleecer Ridge, I'm sure. Definitely going to share this story on the big screen with my family. They need to see your approach as they see me getting ready for my 2025 attempt. Very Cool!
Actually, I am the more technical rider of the two of us, so I think Carl appreciated me showing what was rideable and when to get off and walk! But yes, he was a great companion and his incredible life stories made the miles go fast. I love that you’re going to share this with your family. I watched Ryan Van Duzer’s series with my husband and mother in prep for my tour. That really helped them see what I was attempting!
@@katrinahase Oh i can see well your handling skills before you even hit elk pass. What i was observing with another rider joining you is the fact that some areas are just probably better in numbers. Fleecer ridge seems like one. Flathead alternate, The basin are others i can see better with others. Solo rocks but sometimes safer with others i guess. Good Stuff.
Oh! Yes, you are so right. Just having company was a blessing, and Carl was some of the best company I could ask for!
Hey Katrina, as a rider currently preparing for the divide, your videos have been incredibly helpful, informative and entertaining to watch. Congrats on your achievement and thank you for letting us be part of your journey. All the best from Germany, Alex :)
I’m glad the videos were helpful, Alex. How exciting that you’re preparing to ride the Divide yourself! Feel free to message me on Instagram @birdsnbikesnballet if you have any specific questions!
Nice bike review. Lots of value here for people just getting onto bike touring. Your experience shows through. And for an old "experienced" guy like me...well, we should never think we know everything. Nice job!
Thanks! I continue to refine my setup, but this worked well for a long tour.
I picked up a couple of cool tidbit for my gf and and I to try out on our next tour. Cool!@
I’m just totally blown away. Takes me back to the 20 plus years I spent riding in the western USA. Hello from Austria. You rock!!
So nice to read this! I love the western USA. Hello from Minnesota!
Wow!! Seriously.
@@cyclingnerddelux698 thanks!
Thanks for sharing! I loved seeing the Jasper start. I also enjoy the attention to detail on the trail of humans, animals and your fabulous Bike.
Delighted to see your comment. Yes, Jasper and the Icefield Parkway was a gorgeous, dramatic start to the journey! Thanks for the bike kudos, I think she’s pretty great 😊
Just found your channel, surprised i havent seen it before. Excellent video!
Glad you found this video…it’s one of my favorites! Thanks for watching.
Excellent video!
Thank you! That was such a cool adventure!
How wonderful with your son 😊. Now you can pack up and cart your bike you need to come to Australia and ride. Especially the Munda Biddi Trail. 😊
Australia would be amazing. I’ll have to dig into the details of the Munda Biddi!
Well done. I really enjoyed following this journey. I was so excited for you as I watched your last ride up to the border 👏🏼 thank you for sharing such a wonderful experience. 😊
Glad you made it to the end with me 😊 That last ride to the border was emotional; I feel lucky that I captured it on video to relive it. Thanks for watching!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
💕
Enjoyed the second episode 😊 looking forward to watching the rest. Love that you also name your bike too😂 my new bike is Molly and my old one was Sid (after the sloth 🦥 from the movie Ice Age cause he was a bit of a Sloth to ride and loved laying down on the ground 😂)
Love your bike names! They deserve a name as your trusty companion on adventures 😊. Thanks for watching!
Your voice is the same as my wifes, bearable but when raised its like a cheese grater scraping against my eardrums 😂 Great vid ❤👍
Glad you enjoyed the video, if not my voice.
The bear dinner bell was a bit to much
Haha true! But I didn’t see any grizzlies and avoided any “solo female bikepacker eaten by bear” headlines!
love it! well done can wait to watch the rest.😀
Thank you! The camera angle gets better on the rest of the videos 😅. Hope you enjoy them!
Planning to do the Colorado Trail in July
Exciting! Have a fabulous adventure!

Thank you for sharing, and congratulations on your adventure.
You’re very welcome, hope it was useful
Well done! I cheered for you when you finished!!!
Thank you for the cheers! 😊
Catching these videos well after you finished but very much enjoyed your journey. Two things, never quit any bike ride, hike etc on the worst day and how you treated the dog tells me everything I need to know about you!
Great advice! And thanks, that little guy broke my heart a little. Still think of him!
Fantastic story of your journey! Congratulations
Thank you! I appreciate you following along!
Pretty views
I agree! So pretty up there
Beautiful trails expertly captured on video. Nice work on the black section, looks like a good challenge. Thanks for another fun video!
Thanks, I enjoy rocky tech…keeps my mind engaged! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Those rock puzzle trails look amazing!
Yes, so cool!
Looks awesome!
It’s a great trail, highly recommend if you like tech!
Katrina Hase, great mountain woman👍👍👍
Hahaha I’ll take that compliment, thanks!
Holy cow! The rocks! What a ride! Loved the beautiful fall colors, too. Thanks for the video.
Yes, you should like rocks to ride this one! 😅 The colors were a great bonus. Thanks for watching!
Left CB and the Gunnison area for all the wrong reasons and re-located to the Roaring Fork Valley. Regretted it ever since! Should have never left... so may cool riding areas like this for 50 miles in any direction.
I feel you! Even as I was leaving I was wondering when I could get there again!
Nice job!! I hope I make the cut on the 11th!
Fingers crossed 🤞
Looks amazing. Canadian scenery looks a bit like the Scottish Highlands on steroids! Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for watching! I would love to see the Scottish Highlands someday to compare 😃
@@katrinahase If you ever do, we live a short ferry ride from Argyll which is my go-to bikepacking destination.
Heck yes, riding that climb was 100% worth it! I’m so darn proud to know you. Congrats on your finish and your PR and rallying through the hard parts. Can’t wait to see what you do next!
Thank you! And you’re right…pushing through the hard parts is so gratifying!
I enjoyed your video. Thank you for putting it out there. I've ridden the 50 twice...in January...on my trainer. (50 miles at 45 minutes per ride takes a few weeks!) I have also been support crew for my son-in-law twice including this year. 3 years ago he ran the 50, a year later he ran the 100, then this year he ran the 100 again. Because I've seen what the trails are like, I would like to ride them, but I don't want to spend that much time on a bike. Congratulations!
Thanks, I enjoyed reading your comment. Support crew is a big deal for Marji…that’s a long day! The runners have my respect, they are a hearty lot!
Nice trip, thx! Greetings from the Ukrainian Carpathians (:
Greetings back! Love hearing from places around the world 🌎
Congratulations! Thanks for sharing the experience. As far the "getting passed by a lot of pro racers" comment, I hope that it was just a statement at that particular point in time. I gotta say, though, be proud of that accomplishment and all your others along the way! That didn't look easy whatsoever.
Thanks! That comment in particular actually calls back to the day on the Great Divide route that Lachlan Morton passed me during his ITT attempt. It actually makes me proud to be out there doing hard things-a 51 yr old woman alongside pro cyclists!
Really great video. Killer finish! You’re a total badass! I really enjoyed reliving the race through your video! Thanks
Thanks so much! And kudos for racing too!
