Stories of where bikes meet adventure, from bikepacking to mountain biking, touring to racing.
Lost Canyon: A Colorado Bikepacking Overnighter.
This is the second of two bikepacking overnighters I rode from my basecamp at the Wanderlust Hostel in Gunnison, Colorado in early June, 2024.
The Lost Canyon Overnighter, from Bikepacking.com, begins in the arid high desert and rises towards the Fossil Ridge Wilderness. It’s a more challenging route than Hartman Rocks, but I looked forward to witnessing the transforming landscapes as I ascend.
I’ll climb over 3000 ft. in just 15 miles and camp at an elevation of just under 10,000 ft. before I descend the next day back to Gunnison.
Find the route here: bikepacking.com/routes/lost-canyon-overnighter/
The route steward is Neil Beltchenko.
The route traverses traditional Ute lands.

Basecamp Gunnison: Riding the Hartman Rocks Bikepacking Overnighter
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Місяць тому
After scratching on the Grand Loop bikepacking race, I found myself in Colorado without a plan and with all the gear I needed for bikepacking. I decided to head to Gunnison, Colorado to check out a couple of routes from the Gunnison Bikepacking Route Network. I chose the Hartman Rocks Overnighter for its relatively mild amount of climbing and short distance as a way to test out my lungs in the ...
Lessons learned: My first bikepacking race on the Grand Loop
Переглядів 2,5 тис.Місяць тому
In May of 2024 I attempted my first ever bikepacking race: The Grand Loop. I've been wanting to ride the Grand Loop ever since I rode through the heart of it with Traci in 2022 on the San Juan Gravel Grinder Hut to Hut Tour. I researched and prepared for the race for months, but things didn't quite go as planned. Still, I gained some valuable information for when I come back to make another att...
Driftless Loop: A Spring Bikepacking Story
Переглядів 10 тис.3 місяці тому
The Driftless Loop is a bikepacking route created by Nicolette Reker for theNxrth.com. It starts in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where it quickly crosses the Mississippi River into Minnesota. From there, it travels up and down bluffs of the driftless area, meandering through valleys in the low areas and over hilltop farmlands. I enlisted my friend Ashley (instagram: @ashleybrooksbikes) to bikepack the...

What a great achievement...incredible ride. I really like your mixture of video and photo animation. It's really well done. 😊
Thank you! It was an incredible experience. I’m happy you enjoyed watching!
Did you use ACA Great Divide route for most of your route? If so, did you use their bicycle route navigator app or GPX files for a Garmin/GPS device?
Hi Tom! I purchased the ACA gpx files and created my own collection in Ride with GPS with them and used the pinned files to pull into my Wahoo cycling computer. I also purchased the Bicycle Route Navigator and used it a lot for measuring distances between two points, learning about alternates, and seeing bike-specific lodging and services.
@@katrinahase thanks. That's was I am planning on doing.
Massive congrats, the journey, the films, all the effort! Bravo
Thank you! I appreciate you watching 😃
Great GDMBR video series!
Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Great video of #coloRADo!
Haha I agree, Colorado is RAD!
so very glad I found your series. you have a style that is inviting for all to listen and learn. thank you so much for your time and effort! happy trails....
I’m so glad you enjoyed the series. I appreciate you taking the time to comment! Happy travels 😊
I grew up near Bailey Colorado and learned to respect nature. She will teach you a lot if you are willing to listen. ❤⛺ 🚲
Just drove through Bailey today! Lovely place.
Great video…AGAIN! Tough to pull off of a hike or a ride but sometimes it’s the absolute best choice. Admire your smart decision! 38,000 fit of elevation gain 😮. As always, thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks, hope to give it another try when I’m better physically prepared!
moove indeed
Interesting
if you don’t think ur supposed to be somewhere, ur probably right. skedadle
Thank you for another great video!
You’re welcome! So happy you enjoyed it.
Girl, so many near misses start with an ignored gut feeling. Trust your intuition every time❤
I appreciate that perspective!
If you fill that way, get out
It sure looks like a beautiful place but maybe it's best to trust those gut instincts. It's strange how they work, almost as creepy as the creepy situations they help us to avoid.
So true!
Really like the videos! For some reason that first lower beautiful campsite seamed claustrophobic even before your narrative on creepy! I bike pack by myself and intuition is everything! All the best in your journey’s and our future videos 😌
Yes! Isn’t it weird that a wide valley could feel so claustrophobic? Interesting that you picked up on that too. Thanks for watching!
Same music I think I used for Sasta’s ear bouncing as she ran next to me! Great views! I got family all over Colorado, time for me to start riding there more often!
Colorado is incredible, I can’t seem to get my fill!
I'm still amazed when I'm biking how it puts me in the here and now. Thank you for the wonderful video! New subscriber.
Isn’t biking wonderful for that? Thank you for watching and subscribing, I so appreciate it!
Nice trip. & ya always trust your intuition, my wife’s is stellar and I rely on hers too 😂
Great to have an auxiliary intuition with you while biking!
Great video! Stunning views.
Thanks, the views really were spectacular!
Great job on the video. Love your videos.
Thanks for watching, Brian!
Cool video!
Thanks!
I bust out laughing when you said you should have told them to MOOOVE ! Adore the narration and the video!
Haha I get a little “dad joke”-y when I spend time alone 😄. So glad you enjoyed the video!
Wonderful and beautiful observations of nature.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it!
Another beautiful trip .
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a gorgeous video! Your dialog is awesome! Makes me feel like I was right there with you.
Wow, thank you! I appreciate the comment 😊
High desert to pines, and trustworthy sixth sense exercise.
Great summary, I should have you write them for me! Thanks for watching 😊
Oh good! Watching now.
😃
Great video. My only wish is that the gopro was pointing up the way to get more views, nice cockpit 😂😂
You and me both! When I finally took a peek at my Canada footage in Fernie, I was mortified to see the camera angle was off the whole time!! I did fix it…it’s much better in the future episodes (and continues to improve). Thanks for watching anyway and I’m glad you like my cockpit setup 😂
@katrinahase just going to sit down and watch part 2. Thanks for responding 😀 and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of them.
I’ve really enjoyed your videos ! Thank you !!
Thank you, glad to hear you’re enjoying them!
What an epic bucket list item to do! Congradulations. Videos were great to watch and inspiring!
Thank you! It was a huge bucket list item and has left me wanting more adventures! I appreciate you watching and your kind words.
Heck yeah Katrina! You got the mindset to crush!
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Dave!
“Rocks!” 😍 I think that might have been the prettiest gravel road I’ve ever seen….even if all those amazing rocks weren’t out there it STILL looks like it would have been a gorgeous ride. But those ROCKS! I love that you got to play on your bike AND build a fort. Does it get any better?
You forgot HOLES in rocks! No, doesn’t get much better 😂
Hi. Thanks for the video. Could you please elaborate on the tush cream? Do you combine the 3 ingredients into a single cream? How much of each?
Yes, mix them together in your hand. Total amount about the size of a large acorn. 2/3 Aquaphor, 1/3 equal amounts of benzoyl peroxide cream and antibiotic cream. Make sure you clean the area well before applying.
So fun to see your skills riding the technical sections with a loaded bike, Katrina. Beautiful views, and this area with sagebrush most reminds me of the fynbos found around South Africa. My favorite narrated comment of yours: "Don't worry, I'm not gonna be stupid" 😂
Haha I was watching the first draft of the video with my husband and he was about to say, “be careful” when I said that. Guess I know my audience 😂. Thanks for the insight about the fynbos…I’m always amazed at the similarities between landscapes.
@@katrinahase Yep. That comment did seem like it was directed toward people close to you . "Calmness and light, everyone.. I've got this!" 😂
Impressive technical riding through some of those sections!
Thanks! I love me some rocks 😄
I love Hartman Rocks! Thanks for showcasing it
I agree, what incredible playground for bikes!
Awesome video Katrina it looks like you had a great time! Thanks for sharing sorry I missed ya.
Thanks! You live in a beautiful place 😊 Great to hear from you!
Fabulous! Thank you for the views!
Thanks, Bret!
Im a Colorado native and so much beauty in places but its too rough and high altitude, even at 5000 feet i get exhausted
Yes, it’s definitely easier to pedal in Minnesota, but far less exciting!
@@katrinahase oh I would love it 😎
What a beautiful and inspiring ride!!! Thank you so much for sharing.
So glad you enjoyed it!
As always, a great trip :-)
Thank you for watching, I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it!
Not just a redemption, also an inspiration for us plebes. Thank you!
I'm not inspired to do this but I do enjoy watching 😁
Well, thank you!
Haha thanks for watching!
❤❤ inspirational!! Did you see bears?
Thank you! No bears…I guess I was good at using my timber bell and singing.
Very smart decision. I'm looking fwd to seeing more of the loop's grandness in next year's vid. :-)
Me too 😃
Katrina, you are SUCH a badass! The fact that you decided to scratch doesn't diminish that fact in any way. Thanks, once again, for posting a great inspirational video.
Thank you, Curtis! I was pretty bummed at first but sharing the experience has helped me see all I learned from it.
Admiration for both recognizing the mental task ahead was not within you this year but then to fully realize just go over the state line and ride something equally beautiful and allow yourself the gift of grace and freedom for the love of the bike. Great response!
Thanks…I’m so glad I did! I absolutely love Colorado and it would have been a shame not to explore it while I was there!
I'll never forget these videos, like me, I'm sure they will help folks push on in the trials of life.
What a beautiful sentiment. Thank you for taking a moment to write.
A very genuine and honest account. Bravo for making the right decision. Often, it can be much harder to scratch from a race than to continue. And thank you for a lovely video!
Thanks for that. I appreciate you watching.
Good trip . Any flats . I ride so Arizona. And i have to flat proof the bike .🎉.
It’s a great route! No flats, but we put fresh sealant in before we headed out.
