  • In Episode 2, I traveled most of Montana, ending at Bannack State Park: • Things get a little da...
    In this episode, my friend and fellow bikepacker Traci (instagram: @tracia.giefer) joins me for 2 weeks. We do some wild camping, stay in some interesting motels, visit the Grand Tetons, meet a playful moose, make difficult route decisions, visit the Brush Mountain Lodge, and more! Our travels take us from Bannack State Park in Montana to Kremmling, Colorado.
    Thank you to Traci Giefer and Carl Schoch for providing additional photos and video.
    In case you missed it, I did a pre-trip interview, answering questions a lot of people asked me about preparing to ride the Great Divide:

    One final note:
    This series documents my cycling trip from Jasper, Alberta Canada to Antelope Wells, New Mexico, following the Great Divide. While I use the Adventure Cycling Association's GDMBR maps as a guide, I do not strictly follow their course...I kept open to making changes to the route to accommodate weather, elevation gain, resupply points, and my overall health/energy level. Thank you for following along!

    Greetings from Southern California. I’ve enjoyed all three videos. The scenery is so beautiful. Enjoy doing this while you’re young and healthy, because it gets more difficult as you get older. I wouldn’t mind touring on an E bike with some type of solar panels attached to a trailer. I’m looking forward to episode four. ✌️👏👏👏

    Bummer, too bad you missed the Great Basin. The Basin was one of my favorite sections due to the wild and open skies. Got lucky with weather, some slight cross wind the first day, camped at Diagnus Well and A&M Reservoir then rolled into Rawlins. Nice video series, thanks!

    • @katrinahase
      @katrinahase  10 місяців тому +2

      I’m bummed too. I think with some more backcountry experience, I’ll feel confident to go back and do it no matter the conditions. I’m looking forward to it!

      @Mike-vd2qt 10 місяців тому

      @@katrinahase Yep, the Basin worried me too because of the long stretch from Atlantic City to Rawlins. And I was worried because I have backcountry experience, over thought it really. But luck with weather made it easy, and I planned it to stop at Diagnus Well and camp, then the AM Reservoir about one mile off route was really nice with good water for filtering. I broke it up into 40 mi sections since I was 68 then. Now at 70, I want to ride it again in 2024 with a different approach. Instead of very light frame bags only, I'm going racks and panniers with drop bar mtn bike. More luxury items for comfort, and slower pace. Happy trails!

    Friends and I did the northern half of the CDT many years ago. Stayed in the most eclectic Campground in Pinedale, I will always remember the people there, living in tents, cars, etc. one family of about 10 or so had been there for months because one car had broken down and was on blocks. Father, grandfather and great grandfather sitting around the campfire smoking pot while the women cooked and the kids played. The kids were fascinated with our bikes, the adults invited us to dinner. I imagined this is how the native Americans lived years ago.

    You guys got talked out of the basin. Your 65 mile days, were way more than my average 40 mile days. The Basin to me was not bad. It was tailwind most of the way. I got to the place where you turn south to camp, and then the next morning there was little wind for the remainder-out to the highway to Rawlins. Weather is a factor, but I think you two could have handled it easily, even with having to spend two nights out there.

      @@katrinahaseMany do (30 cases didn't, lol), it's a slight decline into small valley and on a curve so many get in the zone a little. It will be marked better next year, started 2019 just tossing case out and each year grow with it. Not much of an internet person or knowledge but hope to video & document races & riders next year for a channel here.
      Oddly I've commented and sure enough had met person but y'all look the same on bikes and met 100's!

      I'm also dot watcher for racers & riders, remolding home so here most always summer time working, it's a nice break to walk out with dog gate grab a seat break and meet y'all. Let's just say Lael was sweetest person even taking a couple pictures. Morgan the independent record guy was pretty cool himself. Day or middle of night I'll go out, it's silly riders come around corner lights and there I am sitting flashlight or lantern, think I freak some out.
      About 10 year when I'm in my 60's I'll do it otherwise don't ride presently. One man spent afternoon and evening here was 72!

    Did you get to see the great Basin in the "taxi" or it went around it? The basin is hit or miss: can be great in decent conditions or miserable in bad ones. Probably a wise choice of time since traversing the basin in the win and rain makes it very muddy.

    • @Mike-vd2qt
      @Mike-vd2qt 10 місяців тому

      Agree, I got lucky with the Basin other than a slight crosswind first morning. Camped at Diagnus Well, and the AM Reservoir since I was going slow and easy at age 68. The Divide got under my skin, might ride again summer 2024 at 70. Happy trails!
