Noisy solar controllers

I did a little work with a couple of solar controllers. They both generated noise, but it was an easy fix with a few wraps around a clip on ferrite core (Mix 31).

I'm mainly a qrp guy and all my antennas are made with pretty small toroids. Now that I have this amplifier I needed a portable antenna that could handle a little more power. Your club seems so cool. The local club here just caters to county search and rescue and cuts weeds at the club house. super lame.
We don't have a club house, which is why the build was in my garage. All it takes is one motivated person to get the ball rolling. We have some good people in the club.

Have you tried the Buddystick with the screen for a ground plane?
No. It was a loaner. I don't have it anymore. I don't know how well that would work with the elevated feed point. Would be interested to see.

In the game Fallout the lake is drained and there are skeletons with cement shoes in the lake bed.
Just a side note on the sheet bend. It is called that because in sailing, line/ropes that are attached to the corner of sails are called "sheets." With this knot you can tie a rope to the corner of a piece of cloth (like a sail) and turn that rope into a "sheet." In knots the term "bend" is when you tie two ropes together. So sheet bend is a completely descriptive term/name.
I knew it was something like that. Thanks for the information, it puts it in perspective. I used it to tie the corners of a tarp down.

I love WV every time I go there. I used to be a big time mountain biker and would go to Snowshoe for the races. We've been in the Elk river a lot in the past.

Congratulations! Great area. I spend a week in Beaver at the MSHA Mine Academy in late October for work. Beautiful in the fall. I get to hit all the parks around the area and do POTA every evening.
I took a radio, but we were non-stop. I thought about doing an activation from a little island on the lake, but it was a little crowded.

I had one of the first TX500 radios that came to the UK. I sold it earlier this year. Two reasons: the connectivity with those plugs coming out the side, plus the odd balanced audio output that's a bit like Russian Roulette - so many people have blown the audio IC because plugging in 3.5mm plugs to the adapter can cause a short. The price of the TX500 had gone up so much I got most of my original money back and set up a complete Xiegu G90 portable system with solar panel and battery. Its so easy to use. I wouldn't recommend for digital though as it has no built in soundcard, but it has an ATU. 73, GM4SVM

You can ditch the USB cable with the free WFView for the 705. Been using this setup for a while with great success on digital.
Yes, I did a video on setting this up a while ago, but it seems fiddly at times. You also loose GPS capability.

Nice comparison video! I actually made this decision recently. I went with the 705. I ordered the full Peovi cage for it to make it a little more rugged. It was a tough decision for sure because I wanted a more rugged rig for hiking but I was blown away by the 705’s features.
They are hard to beat. I keep waiting for Yaesu to step up to the plate with a new QRP portable radio.

I own the TX-500 and I love it. The IC-705, while certainly an admirable piece of kit, does not meet my needs. The TX-500 is what I'd call a true field radio. Being highly water resistant, I just don't even think about getting it out in the weather. And unlike my FT-817 that blew up the finals any time there was any hint of an antenna mismatch, the TX-500 doesn't much care. There are videos on the TX-500 YT channel showing transmissions with dead shorts and open circuits in the feedline and the TX-500 doesn't blink. While I try not to abuse my equipment, the reality of field operations in harsh environments is that it's easy to do stupid things to your radio without thinking about it. I'd rather be safe than sorry, especially if I'm in a situation where my life depends on it. I noticed that you didn't mention current draw on receive. The IC-705 draws 300ma. The TX-500 is 110ma. That means that you can run 2-3 times longer on the same battery. This is huge for field operations. I asked my contact at Icom if they'd ever make a ruggedized version of the IC-705 and he said no. This is surprising given Icom's presence in marine radios. It's really too bad since an IC-705 built like a TX-500 would be interesting. But at the end of the day, I'd probably keep my TX-500 anyway due to simplicity of operation and power consumption. I routinely get reports from stations who are surprised that a QRP radio can sound as good as the TX-500. This may change at the bottom of the solar cycle, but for now I am in love with my radio and don't plan to ever let it go.
It is definitely one of the most innovative radios to ever come out. I'm holding on to mine. Thanks for the input.
I like my 705 connected to a sailor marine amplifier, 4 watts out for 250 watts from the amp. Also use a BT89 Bluetooth speaker microphone with great fun.

Great comparison between to great QRP rigs! It interesting how much the subtle little differences can make a big difference between, what seems form the surface as two nearly identical rigs. I have the IC-705 and the Yaesu 818. To me they are completely different tools for different applications. Similar to what you show with your IC075 and TX-500.

I like both radios and would consider to get either one. The ONLY thing that's a con for the TX-500 are the cable connections, but it's something to deal with. More tempted to get the IC-705, just cause it can do more. I love my FX-4CR! Nice work on the video & 73!
I just made this decision recently and would have been happy with either but the Icom won me over with its features. I’d really like that 500 for hiking though.
The 705 is the Swiss army knife of portable radios. It's not perfect, nothing is. But if you pair it with an antenna tuner, it becomes close to perfect. Of course, if you have deployed an adequately matched antenna, you don't even need that, but I'm rarely in that ideal of a situation. I love my 705, it will take a lot for me to sell it. But damn, that billet aluminum is sexy.
Somebody once said that when you're in the field with the TX-500 that you can also use it to pound tent stakes. And I believe it. Until you hold one in your hand, the heft of the radio is not apparent. I was shocked when I first pulled mine from the box. You definitely don't want to drop it on your toes. I only use resonant EFHW antennas. It's not a lot of extra work and well worth the extra setup time.

I'm hoping the battery pack becomes available again.
I am using the 6Ah Lifepo from Emerit and i am totally satisfied. Aditionaly a 3D printed Stand with space for the Amplifyer. So no space for the Batterypack.

It is hard to beat the single USB connection. You can even go wireless if you buy the software.
Definitely a nice little radio… Still tempted to get one… Maybe eventually…

Man… I have a 2021 Tacoma Off-Road. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate these videos you’ve made. I have an IC7100 my problems are EXACTLY the ones you’re experiencing. A search on UA-cam lead me to your videos. I’ve tried grounding everything, ferrites & snap ons on power/control head cable/tuner cable etc, moving the radio and even bought a new screwdriver antenna from Tarheel. Nothing works. 20m, which is the only band I really care about, is the absolute worst. I feel your pain more than you know. If you ever find a solution please let us know! If I find one I’ll reach out to you. 73
I wish I had good news for you, but I've given up hope. My wife's 2023 4-runner is the same. I've grounded everything, tried connecting the truck to a ground rod pounded into the ground. That's really not practical, but someone suggested it so I tried it. I think I need an old pre-electronics truck to use as my radio rig.
@@TangoOscarMikeN3WS I spoke with Robert at Tarheel Designs antennas about it figuring with his 25 years of install experience he might have some insight. He told me 2 things. 1. If you ever end up ordering a truck to be built to your specs make sure to include the rf shielded gas pump for an extra $50. That option is for people who know they want comms in their truck. I unfortunately didn’t know about that option when ordering mine in 2021. 2. He said that problem can be mostly fixed, but likely not eliminated totally. He told me to try using many mix 31 snap on ferrites as you can fit in line on the wires starting at the tank. He said try 10 bare minimum in a row if it’ll fit and keep going with as many as you can fit if you notice a difference. I’m not convinced I would notice a difference but I guess I’m willing to try. Anyway, thanks again for the videos and the reply!
Very clear and well-paced. I have the KX2, and have been using it at home. Just getting ready for a IOTA trip, and am watching a handfuls if vids to capture other's experiences. I'm building a light 40m long EFHW w small xfmr. I noted when the aircraft went over how clear the vid remained...what is your recording setup?
Thanks for watching. I'm just using a GoPro11 with the media mod. If I had to do it again though, I probably wouldn't go with the go pro. Battery life is poor and I've had overheating issues which cause it to lock up.

I was kind of shocked how small and light it was. I'm still a qrp guy by heart, but I'll be running W3R special event.
Faraday fabric works just as good as the screen, maybe better and fabric is easier to transport. I picked up faraday fabric 43 inches by 118 inches for $27.27 with tax on Amazon
I've seen where people sew that stuff to a piece of cloth to make it more durable. I might have to think about that.
