Where I got my stuff. I know devices are hard to get right now. I signed up for notification and bought when they came in. It did take a while.

Just keep a single node, router or GW. You know for the hypothetical future community. I live in the capital of my country, and guess what, my nearest next node is 8 miles away and I can't even connect because of building shade, so I'm also feeling kind of post apocalyptic. I think best practice, is to keep one node going, even if there is no utility to you now, just to make the next sucker feel encouraged spotting your node when he powers on his board.

Your vines reminded me of living in upstate NY in the Hudson Valley. Constant falling trees and brush.

I use Meshtatsic in a semi rural area to communicate with 2 other residents, 2 and 4 km away on a private channel. My node meshing between the 2. I like the advantages over an HT of a more discreet RF signal, AES and license free. Using an old phone or tablet to pair with. There are several online tools to find users in your area. Your observations on range depending on power, foliage, frequency and terrain are correct. VHF/UHF HTs will perform better.

I still think about throwing some standalone units, ones with the keyboard that don't need a phone into my kit. I'm keeping tabs on meshtastic and maybe I'll revisit in the future.

Your nodes went to a good home. I made contact with their new owner recently and then randomly came across this video. What are the odds????

Auggie can wear a device with a gps and report back to you where he's located automatically!

I thought about that, but I tested with a couple t-echos and couldn't get signal 1/2 mile from my house through the woods. I was thinking a little APRS transmitter might be better.

Not too long ago I got to see what a mesh looks like when there are more than 100 nodes on at the same time (LongFast channel 0, doh) and it was essentially unusable through an all-in-one device. With a phone-paired device it may have been usable. That was my cue to switch to a different mode, private channel, and work on putting up repeaters in pairs to connect to specific people.

Good on you for what works.

I've also given up on meshtastic. I've had a client node running for just one week and had a few contacts but also seen too many collisions causing corrupt messages.
No way can this mesh system be of any use in a disaster.
It's success has become its own demise.

You need to install the new firmware update.

What about using drones or weather ballon atached from ground to get the additional coverage you need.

I don't have drone, yet. It is very windy up here and lots of trees. A tethered balloon would be hard to do with out. Not to mention the high tension power lines.

Greetings from east bay San Francisco. I just got a Heltec V3 on the air, I think, about 4 days ago. I can see 7 nodes on the list. I've tried messaging to all, and it always says "max transmission reached" is this typical, or could I have a setting issue? Can you control multiple nodes from a single iPhone? I have a WisBlock starter also, it's not on the air yet. I too am a ham, active on a 40 meter em comm HF net. Thanks ! '73 Bob

I don't know for sure. I really didn't get a lot of experience since there weren't any other nodes in my area. The Meshtastic Discord it probably the best place to find out.

From the get go you should have known this based on your location. Should have kept them for setting up your own network if the grid fails

I thought about it, but if I want to get back into it, I'd get a stand alone device with the keyboard.

Although you’re probably even more rural than me i am still in an awkward area. Yeah it’s a fun technology but very limited for me anyway...thanks for the video.
