    Really nice house! But so expensive to heat! No insulation! And even if you blow it in it won’t change much! I had a house like that in South Carolina in Marion and it was a fortune to maintain and keep up! I tried my best on 10.00 a hour most of the time and did everything myself to fix it up! Got divorced after 10 years there and had to come back to parents house around 48 now been here years now I’m 57 Don that house needs so much work you might as well tear it apart and start over!

    She mentioned wallpaper on the ceiling and wondered why...I was born in the 50's and at least through the 60's that was common. It was usually white or off white while the walls were colored or prints, but everything was papered except the woodwork. A lot of times the woodwork would be painted. And then paneling be came a trend

    Did i hear correct horse hair plaster? Does horse hair make it hang better or what's the deal with using horse hair? When she said scratchy furniture I was reminded of a an old chair my mom had and I think it was mohair and I don't remember much but I would fall asleep in the big chair when I was little.

    • @AppalachianMemoryKeepers
      @AppalachianMemoryKeepers 7 днів тому

      The purpose of the horsehair itself was to act as a bridging agent, controlling the ‘shrinkage’ of the plaster and helping to hold the plaster ‘nibs’ together, the ‘nibs’ being crucial to the performance and longevity of the plaster. It was not uncommon for other animal hair to be used in plaster mixtures, but the long hair found on the tail of horses make for the perfect plaster mixture. The plaster mix could be applied to both walls and ceilings and in spite of its time-consuming application process, the plaster cured faster than other commonly used mixtures (Earth Daub, Adobe) making it more versatile. This traditional type of plaster fell out of grace during the post war construction boom, when there was a need for quick housing replacement and a severe lack of artisan tradesmen. Gypsum plaster is quicker and needs less skill. However, there are some drawbacks with replacing Lime-Hair plaster in Historic buildings with modern gypsum, including breathability issues, compatibility issues, acoustical differences and durability. Lime hair plaster is extremely durable- examples of Egyptian and Roman installations can be seen on many buildings Europe and North Africa. Because of the nature of the material, it can withstand long exposure to water ingress, extreme weather conditions and is more flexible than gypsum-based materials.

    It was built as Brick…. Layered with wood and tin to act as a protective layer against moisture penetration in the brick…. Which could lead to cracks and damage, esp in climates with harsh weather conditions; the wood provided a base for the tin to be attached to, and the tin itself offered a waterproof barrier, making the house more weather resistant.
