    I found this because I was looking for electric lawnmower and string trimmer reviews that are actually informative. I don't care about volts. I don't care how you feel. I care about how much torque can be produced maintaining a "useful" RPM, how many VA we're sucking out of the battery at max torque, and how long the battery lasts when doing that, and maybe at half the max torque. Also benchmark against a "typical" gas machine. Something along these lines. You need a dyno for that and nobody seems to use one to review these machines. At least nobody I've found so far. Fuel flow measurement on a gas engine would be nifty. Your full blown dynamic test sounds about perfect. Great instrument, you're giving me hope of finding what I'm after.

      In the early 70s in highs,chool we used a dynamic with a water brake hooked to a faucet to test 3 Hp Brigs and Stratton engines. With simple air and fuel flow guages, we were able to calculate the volumetric and thermal efficiency. At 5,000 rpm, they produced 5 Hp.

    Very nice video. You can also do a simpler approach: make a circle using the 3-point circle method through all three points A. Do the same with points B. The center of the circles is the chassis pivot.

    Is there a reason you went with the O1X gearbox versus the O1E?

    • @DirtyElbowsGarage
      @DirtyElbowsGarage 3 місяці тому

      01E is much harder to find and while it's a proven gearbox, the 01X seems to be strong enough for my goals. The adapter plate is the same (I believe) so if I decide to switch at some point it should be easy enough to do.

    What was the offset on the wheels? My friend and I intend to share wheels (one set gravel one set tarmac) and I need to know if the 15”s will clear the brakes on the MS3

    • @DirtyElbowsGarage
      @DirtyElbowsGarage 4 місяці тому

      The offset was +40mm I believe. The 15s are very tight. I would say it's definitely wheel dependent but for these specifically I had to die-grind a piece of the caliper casting to clear the wheel - not a crucial area structurally but too close for comfort. Long term I might downsize the front brakes to a Mazda3 system or something else that I won't need to think about.

      @@DirtyElbowsGaragedid you have to increase the length of any of the suspension components? Trailing arms, endlinks, rear lower control arms? How was your suspension geometry after you did the lift? I’ve seen about 2 other people lift this platform and I haven’t seen anyone say anything about it?

    • @DirtyElbowsGarage
      @DirtyElbowsGarage 3 місяці тому

      All components were kept the same and I only lifted the height by 1/2". With that height change all the links still worked as intended and as far as geometry goes, I didn't build a full model of the cars suspension to verify it, but I imagine I shortened the roll moment by the tiny bit of lift. My thoughts are that this platform has a ton of potential - especially refined which my setup is nowhere near yet. Mazda knows chassis design and balance and it's amplified in a rally setting.

    Ok glad to see you building it but why did you not make a base plate that would hold the pump and the engine or conect the square tubes? also why is the chain so long? Also if you put a cogged belt drive would help a lot. Base plate is the key and shorter drive! Great first try.
