One month till the start of the next hydrological year on the glaciers.

The planet is warming because increased CO2 keeps infra-red energy from radiating from the night-side of the planet back into space. We are setting thousands of night-time temperature records globally. For Alpine skiing; we get mush and crappy grooming instead that nice spring-skiing transition we used to know and love. Instead of great cramponing on the steeps; it is hard to pick a good glissade. ...merde.

Thanks for the great views, makes us more determined to actually get out a week later so that summer lifts are most definitely open for some different walks, please try & get up to the cafe one hot afternoon at chalet du glacier bossons cafe & capture some icefall, people need to see it to understand it close up in places they know / go to to ease off the climate impact throttle (it's how we converted to electric vehicles, & now BEV hire vehicles at geneva, ..a mere 5 years ago a number of the hire companies greenwashed via their websites for BEV hire I tried, & eventually rang around till someone in charge spilled their guts that there were 3? ev's total & "had to be booked 6 months ahead" (I asked to book based on that timeframe, it was not possible, make of that what you will) now in 2024 staff estimates is for around 5% of hire cars at geneva hire pick up are bev / hybrid (& that carpark likely has 2500+ cars packed in it which would make 125 rental EV's ..too slow an action, wish the mayor of cham would take action on this element of visitors alone, whilst travel infrastructure is there & finally picking up pace, to explore the alps you still need a car, charging in cham was very easy, a breeze compared to parking it at our digs underground car park. If you see the mayor, have a word, 3kWh chargers (delivering 10 amps off a granny plug) would suffice for most so no big upgrades necessary in reality, just a decent breaker & an IP rated wall-plug, but considering the amount of rentals in cham there needs to be a tweak to the system, low & slow is better than fast & hard on batteries & grid demand after all) our only choice in geneva was for a stupidly big & posh IONIQ (shaped like a porsche) which even on level 2 /4 brake regen meant that we rolled down to sallanche (wonderful "everything" charging at carrefour) & the energy back uphill was what we gained to the tank rolling downhill, a zero energy trip, some years ago, I knew we'd cracked it when I saw so many BEV's coming down the argentiere road from likely over the hill in switzerland & was an insight into how BEVs worked in the mountains (this was during 2020 lockdown) ..which being a flatlander was new to me in a time of great resistance to EV's in the uk. If you haven't seen em already the chargers in carrefour are a free loyalty card 22kWh unit, lots of tesla chargers & other brands, but the highlight for me was the attention paid to the set up for Ebike charging, E-scooters, & E-motorbikes/mopeds, I would have thought that is an area that cham would have bumped some budget into bearing in mind all the cycle path upgrades & road changes going on ( promenade marie paradis for example) more summer rental opportunities for local shops to grab, (an escooter charger is essentially a laptop charger in size & low ampage) ..you just need a padlock for the charger box at sallanches. From your winter driving perspective, what transit van type vehicles are now close to the level of requirement to get you to geneva & back (for instance) ..the switch in vehicles must surely be coming? with the ability to park & charge whilst you wait in the canopied car park areas at gva between runs? ..is there any trial data out there yet as I'd love to see what municpalities are planning, ...if a dirty diesel transfer assuages guilt of a jet flight, then a bev van shared ride to a resort must really start knocking down the carbon footprint a good deal, I do know we were very surprised (as experienced ev owners) how little energy at motorway speed we expended to get to gva from cham on the return leg. Spit on an Alpybus vehicle for us, they deserve it!

Thanks! I rode up the gondola to Montenvers with the guy who measures the glacier at the Vallee Blanche for the official records. He told us that the glacier was actually growing in the 70s to mid 80s.

Can you do us (viewers) a favour & find out what the groundworks over at the ski school hq, & les planards meadow above parc de loisers please, daughter & I were hiking in that direction the other week, to us it looked like centenary olympics money may be spent on rejuvenating the learning area via constant snowmaking (lets face it it has been dead for town access beginners for too long, so is that's what is going on? I asked in town tourist office (no idea) ditto across the road at guides hq, & got nothing out of them. Care to walk up past the luge & enlighten us please? ..I have massive reservations regarding the eco associated problems of snow making, however the location to get 1st time winter trip family with a small kid on / off slopes easily has been cramping the reputation of chamonix as a family spot for too long, ..my own kid gritted her teeth in the storms of 2009 (5 her first visit to cham) & just had the toddlers run (the travelator in the distance from short Sameran chairlift. Being a frequent visitor to Cham & asked a lot about its potential, I have a stumbling block whilst recommending it for the rest of the family. So whilst my kid is now an adult the empty, devoid of both snow & activity so close to town area could be a really big leg up for an adult coaxing a few hard hours of slope learning, rest & reward structure which that area could give with the proper action plan, I have fingers crossed for this one! (though Le tour wins when gentle ski-lap structure begins) It would be nice not to have to say "cham is great winter ski-ing BUT" ...and you well know a good winter experience increases the likelihood of folk coming back for summer (& learning far more about the mountains / environment) Please take a look around, ask about & let us in on the plan(ards) ;)

Hopefully walking the Tour du Mont Blanc 31aug to 8th September 2025 and I’m a big UTMB fan so hope I will catch a bit on the Saturday before I set off

Please note: i forgot to mention that climbing is currently prohibited (strictly) on all routes on the Brevent butresses left of Frison-roche until July 15th due to construction works at the top.

It's crazy how much snow there is. I hiked over to the Courmayeur side a few years ago in early July, and there were a ton of exposed crevasses. Really appreciate these reports.

Thanks for keeping the reports going. Strange winter with so little snow below 2000, but so much up high. It's a La Nina summer in the US, so out East it's really warm.
