I'm a reptile keeper and hobby breeder in Western Pennsylvania. I make short entertaining or educational videos of my animals to teach people about them and show off their goofy side that most people never get to see. Here's the enclosure I built for this pair of black tree monitors I just got. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions on how to improve it?

Here's a short video from Mr. Bubbles' adventures yesterday. He was extremely calm and really enjoyed it. We were outside for close to an hour! I was really hoping to get some good clips of him digging, climbing or running but no luck. He just wanted to calmly strut around and investigate everything.

This is what you can expect with most monitors in most cases. Be patient and let them acclimate. The monitor in the thumbnail is is not the one in the video. Feel free to leave any other questions down below and I'll do my best to answer them.
He's a Good Boy

Mr. Bubbles is doing fantastic during his outside adventures this year. He used to lose his mind when a car went by, he saw another human or even when the wind blew 😂. He's getting desensitized to the scary things as well as just becoming more calm and confident as he ages and grows. Patience and consistancy is key with these guys.

Monitors are so calm, inquisitive and wonderful when they're well socialized and happy. 2 years of work well spent on this boy. I'm hoping for another 25 years of enjoying this bond with him.

Warning: quail gets torn in half! One reason I'm against live feeding

This is one of the reasons I'm against live vertebrate feeding. He wouldn't have killed the quail before disemboweling it. He doesn't know any better but humans should. The quail would have suffered for who knows how long and for no reason. For anyone that wants to argue that this is what happens in the wild, this isn't the wild. Thank you! I have pothos planted in all of my enclosures but that's the only live plant I use right now.

If they are red/orange mites then you need predatory mites to get rid of them
Perhaps put a tray to put the soil in it. Secondly have you thought of getting a rubber circular cut out as a cover ? that will fall back in place once you are done with the work in those circular cut outs. Thirdly springtales are better to have a clean up crew. if you can find predatory mites than it will help to keep the population down.
@@Adnancorner there's no point in using a substrate tray unless you want to change the substrate. Then you need to build the enclosure differently so you can open the front to slide the tray out. You'll also lose hundreds or thousands of eggs that are buried in the substrate. I looked for options other than fabric sleeves but didn't find anything that will keep the tiny babies from escaping. Springtails have been in there from the start.
Why dont you plant some things in your garden if you have a house ? plants such as mulberry, green beans
@@Adnancorner I have pretty harsh winter where I live and nothing grows through it. I need a steady food source all year. I also don't have time to take care of a garden, I've tried.

What uvb globe you use for them.
I didn't have any installed when I made this video. I use 24" T5 HO fixtures from Pangea Reptile or Vivarium Electronics and 12% bulbs from Arcadia for these enclosures. The % bulb you'll need depends on the distance between it and the basking spot.

My black dragons are getting larger they’re 19 months old the only thing growing are their tails they’re 4 1/2 feet long when do their heads get larger and I guarantee that they are boys because I’ve seen their hemi pins come out purple on both of them, but they’re not getting larger when they get larger???

I have about $800 in total in each one of these. That includes electrical stuff and cork. It's around $500 just for materials to build the enclosure and the base.

A lot of people that want to start breeding dubia only have a few reptiles to feed and a colony will produce way more than they can use. The warning is that you'll have to find something to do with the ridiculous excess.
