I don't know for sure, he lost them all long before I got him. My bet is he didn't have proper humidity when he was younger and he didn't shed properly. When that happens shed will constrict their toes cutting off the blood flow causing them to fall off. Since they're all gone that's most likely the cause.
The way he "hides for the night" is the lizard equivalent of hiding under a blanket lol
