200-4r High Performance Rebuild - Disassembly (part 1)
Hi Phil, I really enjoy this series. I hope you can find the time to continue it.
Hi Phil. I can't find the CK servo anywhere, was hoping to find an old one. No luck. I currently have a built stage 2 by twisted torque and I can't stand the way it shifts. It has a superior super with no spring. Slams in and out of gear, clunks bad. Tech guy has been great recommend a stock servo. I bought one but would like a little more than that. What do you recommend? Bowtie overdrives 30% bigger than stock but not as big as the Sonnax.
Thanks for asking! If it's slamming that's likely because there's no 'cushion' spring in it as you wrote. I would take the cushion spring(the big one is cushion the small is return) from the stock servo you just brought and add it to the superior branded one you are currently running. That should soften the shift by slowing the apply of it. That's what I would try if it were mine... good luck with your wheels 🤙
@@wrenchingwithphil great thank you. Idk I could do that. I would assume just take the spacer out and replace it with the spring.
@@wrenchingwithphil I am going to pull my servo Friday. Replace the spacer with the spring. I shouldn't have to go though measuring the pin and all that should I? I would assume that wouldn't change and should be fine as long as the builder did it correctly.
hello there im working om my chevy caprice model 1990, it has a th200-4r and the reverse wasent working and you here explained every little detail about this tranny and how to disassemble it, the problem is the reverse gear clutches are worn down. thank you dear sir you are helping a 22 yo boy revive his grand dad's chevy.✌
Awesome to hear and good luck with your build!! 🤙
@@wrenchingwithphil i have one question, so the first gear that has 2 clutches is the 4th gear and the last one in the assembly is the reverse gear, so where is the first and second and third gear?
@@bilalkaiss5146 There is more to an automatic transmission. Gears are combinations... here's a link to start you learning auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm 👍
i think it is called the center support seal
your videos are so helpful. thank you. does your video show how to replace the small seal that goes through the case to the drum in the valve body area?
Thanks for watching! Case prep is video 9 in the series. Good luck with your build 🤙
Hey Phil, I really wish you could get more subscribers because you have fantastic content. I was wondering what your take was on changing fluid on a '95 GM transmission that never had a service with 100k miles. I'm assuming the magnet is completely saturated because there's black material when checking the dipstick. I'm always hearing that sometimes changing the fluid can cause problems when it's been that neglected. Ever had any luck using Marvel Mystery Oil etc. for about 500 miles before a drain n fill? Thanks in advance
Thanks for the feedback and the question! In 'my opinion' you have more risk than reward in changing the fluid at this point. I would gather some new clutches/steels and plan to do a refresh to it over winter(assuming u r in a 4 season area lol). This way you can clean out the junk from all the small orifices and replace the wear items b4 it fries and maybe takes out some other parts when it does... and no need to rush the work to get back on road asap. In summary, 'I' would roll the dice and let it be but plan a refresh. Good luck whatever direction you take!! 🤙
Hi Phil, Question for you that I'm struggling to find the answer to... I'm installing a lockup kit in a 200-4r I'm putting in my '72 Buick Skylark. What is that switch that's towards the rear on the valve body? I'm installing a TCC lockup kit from Painless and that switch is disconnected when the solenoid is changed, and it's not part of the new wiring harness. My trans is a CZF from an '87 Monte Carlo SS. Is it a temperature switch? I'm hoping it's not needed anymore. Thanks!
Thanks for asking. Since you're not installing it back into a factory 87 Monte most all (me included) would only use the 4th gear switch(if you're doing a lockup tranny like I am here) which I'm assuming your painless kit also includes. Yeah probably temp switch but hard to tell without photo... I would leave it disconnected but that's just me lol
@@wrenchingwithphil 😆 Thanks. I finally verified it's just a temperature switch in this particular trans. I've got it all back together and the Painless vacuum switch mounted to the firewall, and brake pedal switch wired. Hope it all works so I can stop running at 3200+ RPM at 65mph. 😳
can you tell me what is the part number on the low/reverse special tool (metal one)
Sure, it's long discontinued but was made by K-D Tools and called the GM lo-reverse clutch remover installer tool #2843
Hi Phil, do you know where I can find a cushion spring for a servo ? I currently have a Superior servo that I am looking to replace and the cushion spring is long gone. Looking forward to your next video, hopefully one on the governor.
Cores are getting harder and harder to find. Try getting an old servo assembly on ebay. I see a couple there for $37+... kinda expensive for just needing a cushion spring but at least you'll have a spare servo pin 🤷♂ And yup I'll get another vid out soon and it will be governor modding 🤙
I was told that the cushion spring should be in there when taking measurement. With the cushion spring in, I had measured.085. I would assume I should be good? I'd like to hear your opinion. It feels correct when turning the output shaft.
Thanks for watching! There are many ways to do things and I suppose many folks have methods that work for them. In this vid I showed what works for me. It's the way I do it and simply what works for me. So, it's what I do lol. I don't know what performance you're building for but I would expect 85 thou is fine as long as it feels ok when turning output shaft with the vice grips like I showed. I doubt the local aamco or tranny shop back in the day even bothered to test clearance with any gauging back in the day... probably just by feel lol Good luck with your build! 🤙
Great video
Thanks for watching 🤙
Awesome video going to apply as much of knowledge and updates to a THM 200C
Thanks for watching and good luck with your build of the 3 speed predecessor!
Hi Phil, I'm surprised you didn't mention adding a stiffer spring in the accumulator as an option for firmer shifts
Thanks for watching! Yeah I kinda figured anyone who was going to go find a stronger spring was probably getting it from within a shift kit that they were using anyway but yeah that's a valid point! Thanks for pointing that out🤙😎
Hey Phil I tried eliminating the 1/2 and 3/4 accumulators like in your video and the tranny won’t shift to either gear any idea thanks
Which CK Performance shift kit did you use? The 2 I see on the website come with a new separator plate.
Thanks for asking. They change their contents semi-often. I'm using an older version of their pro street master rebuild kit in this video series... web.archive.org/web/20210121011155/www.ckperformance.com/List/2004R/2004R-Rebuild-Kits That's why I mentioned not to follow my specific drilling of holes in the seperator plate as it's based on that specific kit. You can see me installing the valve springs/etc for it in video 4. I see they currently have 2 shift kits as you mentioned. If you have the extra $80 you might consider to get the one with the servo as it's more of a matched set and an aftermarket servo is likely gonna cost you closer to 150 anyway... Just for reference, I bought the kit myself and I get no thanks/commission/sponsorship/etc from them or anyone else so I have no skin in the game. I'm just using their stuff in this video series. Purely my opinion and YMMV 🤙😎 Good luck with your build!
Hi phill, if the measurement is a little to big, can the piece you condition with 400 grit be milled?
Thanks for asking! If I understand your question you mean instead of 1-3 thou the measurement is larger... like 5 thou(for example)? In that case, if we milled 'the hole' in the center where I was showing to sand with the 400 grit the measurement would be even bigger which would be a bad thing. I'm guessing that's not what you mean.... We should mill the entire plate cover surface 'except that hole' to make it thinner and tighten the gap. Ideally do both sides(for example 1thou each side if you were chopping 2 thou total) to ensure they are flat and mate together better. So, yes a machine shop should be able to do that... assuming they are actually flat faces. Good luck with your build! 🤙🏎
When will we get to see this bad boy putting in some work? Tire smoke builds UA-cam channels. 😊
hahaha... we'll get there 'eventually' for sure 😎🤙
Another great episode, thank you Phil
Thanks for continuing to follow along! 👍
I know some shops use non hardening sealant on the pump washers on 4L60/E's, to prevent leakage from the bolts.
Thanks for watching and nice tip!
Yeaaaaay!
Thanks for watching!!
Great series of videos! I'm following along as I disassemble my KC 200-4r. Hit an issue in that the center support brought out the direct drum with it. Got a hint on how to separate the center support from the drum?
Thanks for watching! Sometimes the metal rings hold on tight lol... just stick something in between them to act as a pry bar and pry them apart. Of course, don't use something sharp and scratch the center support. For example, lotsa tape on end of flat tip screwdriver should work. I assume you tried spinning the center support while attempting to pull it out already... Good luck with ur build! 🤙😎
Hi, where’s the filter? The pan was removed and no filter?
lol... I don't recall as it's been a while but I would guess that was 'take 2 or 3 or..' Obviously don't run without a filter...🤙
Hi Phil, I have been watching your videos on the 200-4R Rebuild. I am in the process of rebuilding my own 200-4R, because it was supposedly a built hi perf trans. Came with the car and I didn't realize the problems until after a few problems arose..I am going to get the rebuild parts from CK performance. My question is you keep referring to using bearings instead of the bushing or shims. What is the correct nomenclature for those parts. Also is there a specific tech at CK performance you talk to. Thanks Phil, great videos.
Thanks for watching!! If you point me to a specific time in whichever video I can give you proper nomenclature for the part but generally I'm likely referring to replacing a thrust washer with a bearing. I usually just buy online from them and other vendors but Chris Konkanos(some Greek last name I 99.99% got wrong lol) is CK. Good luck with your build 👍
@@wrenchingwithphil Hi Phil, Thanks for the response. I was watching the 22 video series you did on the 2004R. I will give CK a call and talk to Chris. Again thanks and for the great videos.
Love your vids and could not attempt work on my C3 Vett without your help for the trans rebuild. Question: do I still need to leave the one seals out and center seal on center support if I already have a mod done that connect passages in the case and plugs one of the center support feeds? (I have billet forward).
Thanks for watching and glad to hear the vids are helping ur build! I 'assume' you're using the TransGo HD2 reprogramming kit and if so then I don't believe you do need to remove those seals as you've already created the leak. Good idea to use the billet forward drum for dual feeding... if not it will be a saaaaaaad day when you 'step on the gogo pedal' 😱🏎 Good luck with your build!
Hi Phil, would love to see a video about the governor. Hope that will be part of your series
I spoke to Phil a while back and he does plan to include the governor.
Thanks for watching and asking! Yup, absolutely!! vid 24 and maybe 25 too lol. We'll look at minimum 3 different types from low to high perf and some mods to play with
Good stuff man, really enjoy watching this 2004r bjild
Thanks for watching and the feedback! Good luck with your build 👍
C'mon man, where is episode 23????
Thanks for asking!! Currently editing 🤙
Awesome video thank you
Thanks for watching and good luck with your build!!
Phil I’m working my way through the series. Because of this amazing series I’m going to try the rebuild myself ( I can always tell my wife it was Phil’s fault) Im going to have a 350 with around 325 horsepower. What kind of horse power are you building for? I’m lost as to what I need to swap to billet for the horsepower. It’s not a lot but it’s more horsepower than my 83 hurst olds has with the 200-4r thank you your an amazing teacher
Thanks for watching and sure tell the wife I made u do it lol! As long as you're not planning to do brake stands or ultra hard launches you'll be fine with mostly non-billet stuff. I always recommend a billet forward drum as in stock form it's a ticking time bomb regardless of power. Get a new hardened sun shell as well since they're cheap... Good luck with your build!
Thank you!! I’m be watching this series a few times im sure as I dig in to the trans
What up buddy you haven’t posted love you’re videos
Thanks for asking and watching since the early days of the project!! We'll mount the valve body next and drill the separator plate with some other minor things. Slowly filming but definitely in process 👍
I like your videos how you explain about things keep up the good work
Thanks for watching and the feedback! 🤙
is a CRF 2004-r any good online says came from V8 Monte Carlo LG4 not a high output 5.0 , i have a run of the mill roller 305 motor from a camaro installed in monte carlo and just want to daily drive the car nothing performance about it is it any good
Thanks for watching and Absolutely! It's a run of the mill 200-4r non high performance one as you wrote and will be fine for your run of the mill 305 motor daily driver. Being on the highway in overdrive is likely the biggest benefit for you... rebuild it as stock with a shift kit and no need for most all the mods I show as they're likely overkill for your needs. Good luck with your build!
Just finished rebuilding my 200-4r thru your videos thanks phil.
AWESOME, thanks for watching and glad they helped your project!
I’m building a 200 right now do you have a part number for the low reverse tool you used
Thanks for watching! j-28542... search ebay. I don't see one listed currently but they come up quite often.
Can you make a video on how to Set TV cable?
sure, super important on the 200-4r to get that setting right!
UA-cam is getting to be all automobile repair videos😢 are hot rod builders or tractor, you know enough already.
Thanks for watching! Not sure what you wrote but hopefully you'll build a 200-4r soon as well and help keep them behind an engine somewhere a bit longer
Boy i thought about if it would be possible to build mine just from your vids as a instruction. Lotsa parts and they all have to be just so or you have a big mess
Thanks for watching! Well think back to the 80/90's when these things were new and being repaired by local transmission shops all over the country. I highllllllllllly doubt most shops were so careful and measured every clearance/etc as we're doing here. Yet the transmission went back in and the car drove away. My point being that we're going above and beyond what many(not all) rebuilders would have done 'back in the day'. Follow along and try it. It's the best feeling when it works and you can tell your car buds you did it yourself lol. In the worst case it doesn't work and you bring it to the transmission shop like you thought about doing anyway. Nothing lost... Good luck!!
Thank you Sir, was wondering how I was gonna fix that !!! Mine plastic washer broke in 3.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, those plastic washers get brittle over time... the brown one I showed doesn't seem to have much life left either lol Good luck with your build😎
Do you have the parts number for the roller bearings you using
Absolutely! They're made by Koyo and come as a complete set of 6 for the 2004r. Part number is 54201b Cobra transmissions has them here: cobratransmission.com/bearing-kit-gm-200-4r-2014-1 ****Note that the one I'm using on the top of the center support here instead of the washer can't just be put there. You need to machine a groove into the center support for the bearing to sit into. Mine was pre-machined as part of the roller kit I bought from ckperformance
Hi Phil. Love the videos. Soo helpful! What have you seen so far as how much torque it takes to spin the input or output shaft. Basically, how hard should it be to turn the trans by hand? I can turn it but it seems pretty tight. Hoping thats pretty normal. Thanks so much for taking the time to do these videos!
Thanks for watching!! I generally turn it with just a little effort to find the binding point. I'm guessing if I put all my might into it I would still be able to turn it though. So maybe 10 or 15 ft/lb if I had to guess?? Good luck with your build!
Thanks Phil you showed me i didn"t assemble the Sonnex servo correctly . Great video Great detail 👍👍👍👍👍
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Hey Phil, do you know if the clearance for the latest CK Servo is the same as the .125” for the discontinued service you have. Thanks
Thanks for watching! Sorry but I'm not sure as I don't have one. Probably best to call their office and ask directly. Good luck with your build!
Hi Phil, will you be covering the governor next ?
Thanks for watching! Nope, next up is front end play checking and fine tuning it to get it right.
I have a CK servo I bought 8 years ago that I haven't installed. glad you are covering the install.. love your videos
Thanks for watching and the feedback! Yeah that's my favorite servo... too bad they stopped making them
Phil, I just bought a 200-4r from a Monte Carlo SS, I want to rebuild it and put it in my LS swapped Chevelle. Do you have a comprehensive list of components you used to build your tranny? Thanks, subbed
When will you post the CK Servo setup? Waiting on it!
sorry, took a summer break lol. Time to close the pool now so I'll get back to posting soon 👍
Hey Phil, do you plan to continue this excellent series of videos?
sorry, took a summer break lol but yes absolutely. Time to close the pool now so I'll get back to posting soon 👍
Hi Phil I am rebuilding a 200 4r first time and I find your videos awesome so thank you …my question is I made a homemade fixture to hold the output shaft moved up and down. Nice …in the video you adjusted the tool to a notch that was on the tool to “take up the play” because mine is homemade how much am I moving that up in order to take up the play … how much is the typical play…hope that makes sense !!
How did the trans turn out? I’m also doing the CK performance shift kit & servo I’m my Buick GN. You videos are great, very informative!
Thanks for watching! sorry, took a summer break from building/filming lol. Time to close the pool now so I'll get back to posting soon... 👍
I'm starting to watch your videos with more and more interest, I have a lightly tuned 78 corvette which I put a 200-4R level two from Bowtie Overdrives in 2003 and it's starting to run out of steam a little. A few years ago I bought a Pro Super Kit from TCI with performance bands and clutches and a gasket and seal kit K32900-1RC-MD, 1981/90 GM and I decided to start this winter in the repair of the gearbox and I hope, thanks to you, to succeed. Thanks to your video I was able to find and buy on E-Bay the red tool to extract the reverse gear, it is a rather rare tool. A big thank you from France for your very clear videos
