Cutting out the Noise in Photography
To me, Noise is anything which prevents or distracts you from putting in the work. In this video, I share an example of what has been noise to me, as well as explore the topic.

You have an interesting idea, to understand the color of camera sensors, that's why I subscribed to you. This is your contribution to the community! But seriously, my friend, except for the camera color test, no one except you is interested in looking at photos of bears. It's immediately obvious that you are a creative person, but understand that creativity should serve people. I think you need to not just wander along creative paths, but find a goal. If you take pictures of bears, then make an exhibition and not just shoot for the table, people need to be surprised with art, this is about seeing and feeling what you've never felt before. But the goal of art should always be to serve people and the desire to shock them, to turn their views on life upside down!
Thanks for watching and thank you for your thoughts. I actually do have an exhibition for the candy art (including the bears) which opens in January 2025. Some of those candy art images are also already showing in a separate gallery as well. I've also recently printed a Zine of this series, so I'd say the goal for me is quite clear. That said, I don't expect everyone to find that interesting. That's fine with me. I'll continue to make videos about camera tests and equipment, but I don't find that content interesting enough to do that exclusively. My goal has always been to work on things that interest me, and to share that with anyone else who also finds it interesting regardless of the mass appeal or lack there of! I appreciate your thoughts and hope you have a great weekend!
Interesting chat, Matocha. I'm thinking hard to see if i can find something in my life where this sort of applies, but i'm drawing a bit of a blank. The only 'creative' activity i have is the house i'm building in our rainforest... or at least it seems to be 'creative' because it's not a 'normal' house and the only other person it involves is lisa, and her role thus far has largely been limited to approving or disapproving my initiatives. I suppose i also tend to think of 'creativity' as being essentially: 'idea' -> determination to act -> problem solving in the process... which effectively makes everything including breakfast a creative act. My photography is not 'creative' - everything i take a picture of already exists and i just stand in what seems to be the right place and secure an image of a pre-existing actual-factual in the world. I did write a few songs a few years ago and i'll get back to that when the house is done, but my experience of being creative there was just a response to what seemed like an irresistible force within me which i just recorded... and that may be the thing that gets closest to what you're talking about here - because while creative, it was not effortful, and that comes down to the way i orientated myself at that time. I spent many years competing in sport internationally - a complex individual sport that posed a lot of problems that demanded novel solutions. I developed a very strong capacity to focus - to reduce the world to a single compulsion - to step into what used to be called The Zone. I have a technique for making this transition from the scatteredness of the Everyday to Being Present in something specific - i use it most days in photography. I don't think it necessarily makes my photography any good, but it does mean the time i invest in doing photography is just one intense, productive flow. Where the improvement comes is in reflecting on the results - in the critique - and then fine-tuning (or massively overturning) the details that are present in the actual practice. Now - i could go on with how all of this works for me in practice, but it's Sunday morning and i've got the house to work on and i want to go shoot late this arvo and a Dissertation on this topic would be an uninvited imposition in a Comments section! You've started me off thinking about a habit that i've had for decades, and now i have to reorient to do some tricky cuts on the framing for the conservatory! Problems, Colton... it's all problems. Cheers, man - thanks for the vid and y'all have a great day. PS: need to organize my zine copy - u want cash or a broken camera?
Brilliant video Colton! Preach it! I have had and on occasions still experience most if not the all those points you have talked about. I slowly learned that doing is far better than than thinking about doing. Working from home and the responsibility of home care there is a ton of noise. Some is avoidable, some is self inflicted and some is just life. I have learned that interruptions are going to be part of my day. How I handle those, the attitude to them and how I can best be pro-active, set boundaries and allow other to know I am going to be focused on a project for hours. As for gear ( GAS ) learning to be content with what I have and using it to the fullest. I think that it takes a bit of realizing what you really need over the desire of wanting. Thanks for having a great channel and sharing you creative journey!
You've worded that perfectly. The steps to identify noise, cut it out, and deal with it when it's unavoidable! Those are the markers for success. I absolutely agree that doing (even with less than ideal conditions) is better than thinking about doing (waiting for perfect conditions). Through that we learn and advance much more! What has been the biggest noise for you?
@@ColtonMatocha One of the biggest noise is more or less self inflicted. I thought about this for sometime, I caught myself fearing the outcome more than the work, so basically...being comfortable doing little, rather than starting a new project that requires more attention and perhaps more effort. I guess there is 2 concepts, fear of failure and fear of success. If I don't do, then I won't fail, but if I do and I succeed then it will require change. Sounds weird. Getting out of my comfort zone ( easy as packing up a camera, take a drive and then spend time to just enjoy taking photos) I did a high school senior photo shoot for the first time. It was so out of my normal ( comfort zone) I spent a good 3 hours...on location, and I am so happy with the results. the client was so excited! I was worried with the equipment I had, but ended up having so much fun in the process. lessons learned!
@thissidetowardscreen4553 That resonates a lot with me. When I was working as a photographer for large clients, I was so stressed that something would go wrong and that it would ruin the shoot so bad I would not be able to deliver the photos. Of course that was mostly in my head and nothing ever so extreme took place. Just that thought though was a big obstacle in picking up consist work for a time. Even to this day, that still pops up every time I get a chance to do a collaboration. If I succeed then more potentially larger opportunities will come and I'll finally be found out for a crappy photographer. But of course that is also just noise as well!
Using an Olympus e-300 Digicam, and totally loving it!
It's a great camera for sure! What do you photograph mostly?
Bottom line is, the technology is evolving and we need to move with it. It doesn't me though that you need to go get every new iteration of technology. I am still using my Nikon D700.
I agree with that generally, however I think corporations lead us to believe older equipment is no good, when the reality is that it can still produce excellent results.
@@ColtonMatocha Totally agree with you and that is why I haven't upgraded to a newer camera. Now, I have a small canon powershot s50 with ccd which I bought around 2003 and the images are definitely different to a cmos, it resembles close to my film days photos. Still have that camera too and take with me on my cycling tours.
I've had many Sony mirrorles cameras (A6000, A7, A7II, A7RII, A7RIII, and A7C), and I was never satisfied with their raw files without major color adjustments (.jpgs were even more disappointing IMO). However, having sold almost all my Sony gear, I still had some Zeiss Loxia lenses that were harder to sell. So last week I bought an old Sony A3500 (same as A3000) just to have some E mount to put my lenses on (which are absolutely fantastic), and boom! Wow, this is the first Sony sensor that produces really great lively colors right out of the camera (it's a 20.1 MP APC-S). I had never heard of this model before, I just saw it was very cheap (and old). The camera has a very crappy screen and low resolution EVF, it shoots only at 2.5 FPS, but I use with manual lenses so I couldn't care less about its speed. I'm happy to report its colors are very good.
I've never heard of those models either but it looks like they're an E-mount mirrorless camera designed to look like a DSLR. I wonder if these were some of the earlier e mount models? Regardless, I'm glad you found one that takes pleasing photos!
I'm in south africa where can i fix it?
I'm not sure about repairs. I would suggest checking Fujifilms website. They should have a global repairs center. That said, depending on the repair, it might be more expensive to fix than just to buy another used one.
Great, informative video! Just wondering if there is a noticeable difference in images made with the 14-54 ver1 and the 14-54 ver2? Keep up the great work!
Oh that's interesting, I wasn't aware there even were two versions! I wonder which version I have. I bet there is some documentation online for the v2 which would indicate what the improvements are supposed to be.
Colton, fantastic video and stories! Love the photos! Just to let you know I am working on a time machine that is powered by a perpetual motion electrical generator. The future me, just told me it works! 😆
Hey that's great! I may need to borrow that time machine once you've got it up and running in our time!
@@ColtonMatocha The future me said you used it already???? 😉
@thissidetowardscreen4553 Sounds like I might be creating a nice little paradox for myself! 🤣
Really like the output from this camera. A question though...did you tweak the colors at all? Is this straight out of camera?
Thank you! I really love the colors as well! No tweaks to the colors specifically. I only played with the exposure settings a bit. Very minimal edits
@@ColtonMatocha Thanks for the response! The only experience I've had with a CCD sensor is with a LEICA M9. The colors from the 645D kind of do remind me of the M9.
@@loriolus I think one of those (maybe the M8) used a Kodak made sensor which is also the case for the Pentax 645D. Those sensors made by Kodak were pretty good when it came to color science
@@ColtonMatocha Yes, both sensor in the M9 and M8 are made by Kodak. However, camera manufacturers sometimes add their own sauce to the color science, and I'm glad that Pentax(at least from the samples you've shown) left it close to untouched.
@loriolus yeah manufacturers color science is honestly often the most important variable for the final result. I have noticed though that Kodak sensors used in Olympus, Pentax, Leica, and Hasselblad cameras all seem to have great color science. That leads me to wonder if Kodak had a closer partnership with these brands to help define color science for these sensors. Who knows lol
Firstly, i'm First. Secondly, your studio could do with a good dusting. Thirdly and finally, i think you'll find that all digital cameras necessarily capture in colour no matter what you set them to. The only exceptions are the Leica Mono and Pentax K3 Mono - for obvious reasons. That said, i think the 8MP CCD seems to have handled the whole ordeal pretty well - did you process with a denoise? Bonus point... ah, haven't got one: like this compact monthly wrap thing (that'll do). Cheers, horse-feathers - get yourself a 3-way geared head!🤣
You'll be happy to hear that the dusting is complete! 😁 I suppose I never really shoot in black and white so I wasn't aware that was how cameras did it. Very interesting. I wonder what benefit there is in a camera that shoots natively in B&W versus one that shoots in Color. At least as far as the end result is concerned. I do agree though that this camera handled the photos well! Only some basic noise reduction in Lightroom! Hope you like the series! How much have you made on those 3-way geared heads so far???
have you tried sigmoid rendering on darktable? I find it to be easier to get image rendering that I want
I have not! Although this might be worth checking out. How does it compare to paid tools like Lightroom?
Now I want a comparison of using different vintage lenses (same focal length and same camera body) to see if color rendering is affected in any way. I understand 3D pop and micro-contrast, but I wonder if some camera lenses are worth their price
I think the color would be impacted due to a few variables including the chemicals used for lens coating back in the day, but also any potential imperfections to the lens which have occurred over time.
FILM LIKE!! No, it's not no 35mm phoyos look anything like a digital ccd or smos just stop! I yook hundreds og 35 mm photos develo4 my own film and 35mm looks nothing like a evolt or any other ccd camera! Even the earliest digital cameras e'1 d100 look orders of manitude better than 35mm!!
Happy post Halloween Colton! Great video! Love seeing how you put a shoot like these together! I was away for Halloween this year, but I definitely needed the time away. First time not handing out the candy! Loved the plastic pumpkin photo! Thanks for sharing!
Happy Halloween to you as well! Hope you enjoyed your time away! I enjoyed the pumpkin one as well! 🎃 I've actually never lived somewhere where I had any trick or treaters to give candy to, but I've certainly been trick or treating before!
Do you crop your images by eating everything on the periphery of the frame?😂
That's exactly how I do it! Prevents waste!
Don't want these pixels to end up in a landfill or floating in the ocean 🌊
@@ColtonMatocha They're going to anyway, but after further post-processing.😐 (Run this by your Vet for further clarification😂)
Since you asked, #2 and #3 were my fave picks. Started watching this at 0330, but it was still dark out and a wind was blowing through the trees and there was a creaking noise in the house and my black cat Shamamba killed a white mouse... anyway, i stopped watching and waited until now when it's light and i've got tea and i feel much better, thank you. Did you realize that your T-shirt was a pumpkinish colour too? Let me know what body part gave the greatest satisfaction when you ate it. Weird. Cheers!
Sounds nice and spooky! Really ups the experience of this video 🎃 I have to say the fingers were the best because of the variety of colors! Wish there had been a few more of them honestly 😁
@@ColtonMatocha I noticed there were green fingers - good you're eating healthy for a change.😂
@luzr6613 My doctor would be so proud to see that I'm finally eating "colorful foods" 🤤
Hey, from all the digicams you have tried which one do you prefer the most?
It's gotta be this Fujifilm finepix J40. I carry it with me daily!
I think a better comparison would be the jpegs out of camera. There is a huge difference between sony's raw output and their processed output.
Have the Camera for a couple of Weeks now and use the Coldshohe mostly for an extra Light. I'm not a Fan of the harsh Light of a Front Facing Flash, so the mounted (RGB-)Light gives me a bit more flexibility. Especially to darken the Background a bit and highlighting the photographed Object/Person.
It seems like that's the most common use for the coldshoe!
@ColtonMatocha To be honest, besides that some people put an optical viewfinder on it, I don't really know what other uses you could get out of it.
Thanks for the video. I prefer the CCD color if for the landscape and outdoor scenery. To me I don't know why, the yellow-greenish tint from many (supposedly) CMOS cameras have that yellow-greenish (not the warm yellow) made the photos look cheap and digital, I have D3400, it falls in the same result.
Yeah I agree. Whether the sensor or the color science, it seems like a more appealing result!
I've been wanting to get into photography, and it turns out my mom has just had one of these laying around :)
That's perfect! Hope you enjoy it and that it sparks creativity for you!
I have very sensitive eyes - any EVF, i use longer than just 2-3 mins, i get swindel, headache, eyestrain. I do *need* an OVF, simply as that. Thats why i do love my DSLRs - and would never change.
That's a great callout too! We already have so much screen time and adding in an evf just increases that. Obviously an issue for folks such as yourself!
@@ColtonMatocha Exactly. Well, EVFs are always being getting better nowadays, from resolution, but they still look weird...because it's not an bright, all glass pentaprism, like via (D)SLRs...i'd therefore always love to look through a fine OVF. I enjoy both my 35mm SLRs, rangefinders and DSLRs. It's a no brainer for myself - and with EVFs always the same.
Hi Colton, I just purchased this camera and I was wondering if is normal the black screen while taking pictures? I mean the image on the screen is not showing anything till I take a picture then I can see the pic that just took. I can also see the settings like normal. I mean is it normal the black screen while taking pictures? Thank you in advance
You might try hitting the 'info' button on the lower left side of the camera. That should turn on the display. There isn't any live view though so the only thing the back screen shows is the settings info.
@ColtonMatocha okay ! Then it's normal, I honestly thought there was a "liive view" on the display while preparing to take a picture. I believe everything it's okay now. Thank you so much Colton
@@ColtonMatocha I'm just subscribed to your channel, I really appreciate your quick response
@@krizlion3328 Oh gotcha! Unfortunately I think these older Sensors/Processors lacked the ability to do live view. Glad that your camera is working fine though! It won't take long to get used to it! Thanks for subscribing! Hope you enjoy the content!
I have both cameras. I love them both. RZ does have a rotating back and I got a polaroid and instax back for it. Don´t have that for the ProTL. Lens wise I think there is a wider selection of lenses for the RZ. Yes, the RZ is a brick. But doing a lot of LF photography that was never an issue for me. If am tight lugagge the ProTL wins. Otherwise I prefer the RZ. Again, both are keepers.
Yeah they are both phenomenal cameras! I prefer the Pro, but that doesn't mean the RZ isn't great as well! It just didn't make sense for my personal situation to keep both cameras so I had to pick.
LOL you realized you bought yourself in the wrong system😂. What to consider is that except Sony I think all systems have allowed limited amount of third party lenses. For instance Laowa 10mm lens auto focus doensn't work on L-mount. Probably because of Sigma's fear of losing sales. I Agree about the affordable lens options on Canon. Besides that I think the price gap between the R6II and R5II is too big also. 4800 for a higher resolution camera is crazy imo. When I started with my Olympus E-500. Canon had a 70-200 f2.8 around 1200. Now they almost trippled. What to consider is that the market after great decline shows some stabilizing. But is still fragile. Still only around 10% is left of the all time high. So manufactureres can't take the same risk anymore as development costs increase and the ROI shrinks because of lower demand. Yeah I can understand it from their perspective. With Olympus both the the 100-400mm and the 150-600 are designed and made by Sigma. Probably to save R&D costs. In MFT I also see that there are very limited third party lenses that could replace first party lenses. I wouldn't be surprised that in the future camera's are made in the same production plants. Like smartphones and many electronics. So camera brands become more designers and less manufactureres.
The E-500 is a great camera! I still use mine to this day! Just shot photos of Max V's 2022 Formula 1 championship car with that camera! As far as the Canon goes. I wouldn't say it was a bad choice. I'm loving the camera and the sigma lens I got for it. The colors from this camera are incredible thus far. However, I will agree that the market has changed a lot, and will likely continue to do so in the coming years. I can see how brands would be weary of additional competition, yet also, I can see how a partnership with third parties could reduce pressure on in-house R&D and make a camera system more appealing. I feel confident that Canon will eventually open the mount further to third parties, but it will certainly be interesting to see what happens with the overall market in years to come!
Excellent video Colton! Using K mount lens here, have a great variety of lens choice...especially with vintage lens! Thanks for sharing!
Yes K mount has some great lens to choose from. EF mount did too! Hopefully RF will! At least the nice component of mirrorless is that many mounts can be adapted.
EF lenses work the same way as RF. And besides, EF lenses have a very 3D pop appearance due to the lack of ED glass! Therefore, it is stupid to buy new lenses. Canon is the only system in which old lenses work no worse than new ones, unfortunately Nikon could not do this, although they have more beautiful glass.
Fair points, but I'd still say regardless of EF lens, it's foolish of Canon to block third party manufacturers from making RF lens.
@@ColtonMatocha But Apple does it and everyone buys it, it's a closed operating system. I don't see many people wanting to switch to Android!
@@ggdfggdfgdffgfddg34 That's an interesting example considering that Android phones make up 72% of the smart phone market globally and Android is very open to third parties whereas Apple is not and iPhone holds about 27%
@@ColtonMatocha Believe me, friend, in my country the average payment is $650 and almost all the girls have iPhones. It's status. Don't count how many phones are sold, think about how much they sell for. Apple earns much more from each iPhone than Androids. And this allows Apple to introduce innovations. Like Canon, let's not forget that after Sony, it is the only sensor manufacturer, Panasonic outsourced sensor production.
“… using Canon as a prime example…” - LOL!
Lol Canon was asking for it! 😂
Here's another factor... manufacturing capacity. A good example of this involves the tie up between Canon and Tamron in the 1970s. Canon was taking off in the SLR market and, for whatever reasons, were not in a position to meet market demand with their in-house manufacturing. This led to a collaboration between Canon and Tamron - some of Canon's best lenses from the period were developed with Tamron and manufactured by Tamron, but badged and released exclusively as Canon. So, it was a symbiotic relationship with both parties benefiting from the respective in-house R&D programs and Tamron being able to build further on that to the stage where they could design and produce OEM-quality glass. As an aside - five lenses to look out to from Tamron, all released in the '80's and '90's, are the Adaptall2 SP 80-200mm f/2.8 and 90mm f/2.5, along with the 'LD-IF' 185mm f/2.5, 300mm f/2.8 (the 60b variant) and 400mm f/4. These are all superb manual focus lenses, built like tanks, and can be found for considerably less pingers than their OEM equivalents. Cheers.
Yeah that's a great additional point! In some ways, it makes me curious if that's similar to what is happening with Sigma making lens for the APSC RF line. It's like canon is either uninterested, or unable to build out lens for that themselves
@@ColtonMatocha Makes a lot of sense to outsource, especially where there are uncertainties around demand and, therefore, an appropriate level of investment in manufacturing capacity. Third Party manufacturers have a flexibility that most OEM would lack.
@@luzr6613 Yeah I agree. Leveraging their capabilities is smart! Not sure why Canon is so resistant with the RF mount
@@ColtonMatocha I'm very lucky to know nothing about any of this!😂
just got a sigma f2.8 lens for my old ass Sony a380, glad I didn't have to spend a lot of money for it
Can't wait to see what you get from that!
Will Autofocus work with Canon 50 1.8 STM?
I believe it will because it uses the same mount system.

Hi Colton, Great video! I personally enjoy these type of content from you the most. Although they may not generate the same amount of views as your gear or photo assessment orientated video's. I hope you will continue to make them. As the mental part of photography is also important, somehow I never seen anyone else making content about it. Except if they go through a hard time and that is why they are making video's on a lower pace. I've always been very goal orientated myself. But after my chronic illness I have decided to care less, also out of necessity. As a perfectionist reaching goals didn't give me fulfilment. I may have become more passive, but more focused on the here and now. By going with the flow as I grew tired of swimming against it.
Thank you so much for writing that. It was good to hear. I've been enjoying making these videos even though they might not get a ton of views, because it seems like they do make an impact for people. Sometimes it's helpful just to hear someone else say these things about mental health out loud. It's also somewhat therapeutic for me to say them myself. I'll definitely continue to make these because even if it's helpful to only a handful of people, that would still be worth it to me. I appreciate you watching and sharing a bit from your perspective! It's a valuable tool to be able to take stock of what effort you have available and apply it in moderation. Better to sip out of the glass than to chug it and be left on empty!
Thank you so much for this vid! Definetly needed to hear it and its insporational and resonates with me :)

Also (realizing your channel is kinda centered around cameras and whatnot so u probably already know this) but the lighting and quality of the vid is amazing!
@@lizmcaulister Thank you for saying the lighting and quality look good! I'm always slightly self conscious about whether I've done a good job with how everything looks and sounds. I just remind myself that I'm doing the best I can and getting better at it with each video I do! Always nice to hear though! I recognize that these videos don't necessarily get massive views, but if they're helpful to even just a handful of folks then I'd say that's worth it! I've never been interested in chasing views anyway. I just make what I think is fun or helpful! I always appreciate feedback, so thank you big time for sharing some with me!
Getting a video out every week is already a lot of work. When I first started my woodworking channel, I was working on my channel content after work, and it felt like working 2 full time jobs. I got an initial boost of subscribers, and I was also burnt out.
@@What_Other_Hobbies yeah it definitely feels like a second job. It takes a ton of work to put out quality content and I'll admit that sometimes I can only get two videos out in a month instead of four. I just try to do the most I can without running into burnout!
Hi Colton! Great video, message and insight! Perseverance, effort and consistency = growth. Never stop learning and keeping it fun. I find pushing myself, but understanding things take time and I can learn from the failures as well as the successes. I also learned that there are times I need a break as well. A change of location, perhaps a time to just think and reset goals and expectations. Try something new and breaking the comfort zone barrier. I picked ups some zone focus film cameras and I am having to really take a bit of a step by step with cameras that are fully manual and be aware of process. I am also aware I need to be more aware of the privilege and show gratitude for the the gear I have and the relationships that promote my crazy dreams. Thanks again for sharing! Always inspirational and positive attitude.
I agree! Allowing yourself to take a step back and take a break can be just as beneficial as pushing yourself to do more. They go hand in hand. The recharge is as important as the output! I also think it can be very beneficial to use cameras that are different as they serve to challenge you to be adaptive! I'm glad you liked the video. I always appreciate your thoughtful contributions!
Colton! So sorry I missed your stream. I will watch later.!
No worries! Next stream on Monday!
I like your calmness and attitude towards photography - use your tools the best way you can, don’t spend absurd amounts of money to achieve like 9% more, try to find fun in it and don’t turn your beloved hobby into profession. We are the chasers of enjoyment with some specific, fluffy goals to achieve in mind. Also, your gummy bears are the best in terms of colour and tonality I’ve seen on youtube! Cheers!
Thank you for those kind words! That made my day! I'm really glad you like the candy artwork! I'll be continuing to make more of that in the months to come. Thank you for watching!
I love my evolt e300. I just wish I knew something anything about photography other than what looks good.
