Unwrapping an open box pair of Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 and first impressions

You would think I learned my lesson after the last open box speakers I bought from Best Buy but I did it again! This is my first experience with B&W actually in my home. I have heard them many times at stores and show but never had a pair in my own place. So far I am very impressed,

    B&W definitely have a sound that's an acquired taste in my opinion. I've only ever listened to the 600/700 series and a brief demo of the Formation Duo. The treble was too much for me right away. Not just a tilt in the treble like Monitor Audio, Focal or even Klipsch, but to a degree that made it unpleasant. The last five years consumers have become much more aware of speaker measurements primarily thanks to ASR and more recently Erin H. There's of course pros and cons to this, but a lot of manufacturers have shown improved engineering. B&W certainly has the ability to make these models sound better while still being unique to their brand. I'd like to see them put more focus into the engineering in these series.

    Thanks for the review. A nice follow up to your unboxing video. To answer your questions, I did try these speakers and their matching stands in Rosenut. They look beautiful and the build quality is top notch. I had the same issues. The mid base was a little sucked out and they were too sibilant for my old guy ears. I also had the 702 S2 in Rosenut. Again beautiful and very detailed. The mid base was better but still too sibilant. The other issue was that while well recorded music was very detailed, live music sounded flat and lifeless. I recommend the Revel PerformaBe M126Be stand-mounts, which is what I still have in my listening room. The beryllium tweeters sound detailed without sibilance. The mid base with the bass element is excellent. They cost about the same but much better sounding in my experience. They are equally beautiful and well built. Also I can play all my music including live albums and they rock. Highly recommend. Rock on!

    I absolutely agree with you. I find the treble of the 700 s3 models with the tweeter on top to be too loud and emphazising on the treble. The models with the tweeter inside the cabinet have a much more balanced and pleasant sound. In fact I think those models sound very, very good. So good that I bought my own pair of 704 s3 floorstanders, which I use together with two Rel T5X subwoofers. One subwoofer connected to each speaker. I also expanded the setup with a pair of 707 s3 standmounts and a HTM 72 center channel for a home cinema setup, and I'm very happy with it.

    IMO this is a very "real world" review & truthfully. IMO, this hobby (speakers & equipment) reminds me a lot of watches, there are "many" $2,000 and below watches that are equally as good-looking and perform the same as watches that cost $2,000 to $1M, I believe the same goes for Audio equipment these days, which is due to trickle-down technology, better manufacturing & made in China.

    Where would you put the DB63’s at 1-10? You told me the Martin Logan b2’s were 8/10 and the 600m II’s were 6/10 I’m guessing maybe a 7 for the db63’s?

    • @AV-Obsessed

      If you aren't considering price the DB63s are a 7 out of 10 but since they are so cheap compared to the 600Ms and ML Foundations they are a 9/10. The MLs are a better speaker but cost almost twice as much.

    Like many others here, I too purchased some B&W 705's from Best Buy, open box. Mine arrived in excellent condition. After a week of tweaking, I'm VERY VERY happy with the sound. Although, like any speakers, it's taken a while to dial in. In my room, setting my crossover (I'm using a SVS SB13 Ultra) to 57hz, and installing the "ring" style plugs really helped smoothing the mid-bass/bass transition. A little toe-in is good too.

Beautiful speaker and well built. Also had the matching stands. I ended up going with a pair of Revel PerformaBe M126Be instead for less money from a different dealer. The B&Ws were too sibilant to me. The beryllium tweeters on the Revels sound excellent to me and the midrange and upper bass was better too. I also tried the B&W 702 S2 and the tweeter sounds about the same as the 705s but with better bass. Enjoy your musical journey!

    • @AV-Obsessed
      @AV-Obsessed 8 днів тому

      It really isn't, the knock test is a real thing, If you knock on a speaker cabinet and it sounds hollow then some of the frequencies that the speaker will play will also sound hollow because of resonance in th cabinet and if you knock on a speaker and it sounds more solid because of more bracing, better quality wood, more damping materials those frequencies will sound cleaner and not be influenced by the cabinet as much.
